• My partition table is facing limitations; having problems creating more partitions

  I first noticed an issue when trying to install Linux Mint 14 as a third OS alongside Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows 7 - I was unable to create another partition to install Mint to. Poking around, I realised that I had reached the limit of primary partitions: (from left to right of the table) 1) a ~100 MB primary partition that I meant to use for storing Grub files but never got down to, 2) a 25 GB extended partition, with the entire partition containing an ext4 Ubuntu partition, 3) a ~513 GB partition containing Windows 7, 4) some ~50 GB of unallocated space, and finally 5) a 4 GB swap partition. I decided to wipe off the first ~100 MB partition, which I didn't need anyway. This brought me to a dilemma, however: as Ubuntu, during initial installation, had created an extended partition for itself, which meant that I could not create any more. Having an extended partition for Ubuntu is virtually useless as there is only enough space to contain Ubuntu itself, and the benefits of extended are worthless here. And if I go ahead and install Mint now, I would face the same issue of too many primary partitions in the future should I want to create any more. What I'd really like to do is this: convert the current extended partition into a normal primary partition, and create a new extended partition in the unallocated space for all future partitions. • The Increasing Focus on Architecture

  If you follow my updates on Twitter or on the OTN ArchBeat page on Facebook you have probably noticed that I'm a regular reader of Joe McKendrick's SOA blog on ZDNet. Usually I'm content to simply share a link on my social networks when I find one of McKendrick's posts interesting. But with a recent post, In the cloud era, let's start calling IT what it is: 'Innovation Team', McKendrick hit on a point that warrants more than a quick link: "IT is no longer just a department full of people who code, build and maintain systems. IT is the business partner that plans and strategizes what types of technology solutions the business needs to move forward." Of course, what McKendrick is describing is an increased focus on architecture. Assuming that McKendrick's assessment is correct — and I do — that expanding focus, from coding, building, and maintaining systems to planning and strategizing technology solutions that serve the business, isn't limited to the organizational level. The individual roles within the IT organization will also have to shift to a more broadly architectural mindset. McKendrick's post references Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger's assessment of cloud computing as a critical "third model" of computing to emerge in the 50-year history of Information Technology. As computing itself evolves, the underlying roles that make computing possible must evolve accordingly. That evolution will be defined by an increased focus on architecture.

• Search multiple tables

  I have developed a web application that is used mainly for archiving all sorts of textual material (documents, references to articles, books, magazines etc.). There can be any given number of archive tables in my system, each with its own schema. The schema can be changed by a moderator through the application (imagine something similar to a really dumbed down version of phpMyAdmin). Users can search for anything from all of the tables. By using FULLTEXT indexes together with substring searching (fields which do not support FULLTEXT indexing) the script inserts the results of a search to a single table and by ordering these results by the similarity measure I can fairly easily return the paginated results. However, this approach has a few problems: substring searching can only count exact results the 50% rule applies to all tables separately and thus, mysql may not return important matches or too naively discards common words. is quite expensive in terms of query numbers and execution time (not an issue right now as there's not a lot of data yet in the tables). normalized data is not even searched for (I have different tables for categories, languages and file attatchments). My planned solution Create a single table having columns similar to id, table_id, row_id, data Every time a new row is created/modified/deleted in any of the data tables this central table also gets updated with the data column containing a concatenation of all the fields in a row. I could then create a single index for Sphinx and use it for doing searches instead. Are there any more efficient solutions or best practises how to approach this? Thanks.

• 13.04 Temp Save, rt3290, Kernel downgrade

  It's kind of a multiplying but I didn't wanted to open more than one topics. I'd have a fresh install of Ubuntu with tlp configured and using acpi_call to keep 7670M turned off. I was a short time arch user and with openbox and firefox it was about 60 to 70 degrees; wanted to turn to a stable release just for this reason. acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +50.0°C radeon-pci-0100 Adapter: PCI adapter temp1: -128.0°C coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Physical id 0: +56.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 0: +54.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 1: +55.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) The temperature is not seriously high yet can be lower. Another issue is my wifi card, rt3290: The rt2800pci module is fine and all that but the download performance is pretty bad alongside of annoying signal range and the prop. driver gives a conf error about some specific rt2860 code and integrales in pci_dev file. If I blank off the error making variables, module loads but the driver is unused. Since the driver is old, I was thinking of downgrading the kernel of raring to 3.7 or may be 3.6. Should &-or can I?

• Content light website and Google - Tell google it's a listings site (as opposed shop, reviews or restaurants)

  I have a listings style website. Due to the nature of this (listings) the site is content light. Each page is typically less that 50 words but there are many pages. The site in question has had a ton of media coverage and so has some great inbound links from places like Wired, Fast Company, Canada Broadcasting Corporation and many many other bloggers, media websites and recycle related niche authors (It's a recycling site). But Google really ignores it. Traffic from search is very very low - less than 5% of all traffic. I know that using markup you can tell Google whether your site is a restaurant, article, review, shop, local business and a few other categories (https://www.google.com/webmasters/markup-helper/u/0/). Is there a way to tell Google that my site is a listings site? I suspect, but do not know for sure, that part of the problem is that Google simply does not know what my site is? It's a crowdmap where people post curbalerts. The information is useful to people but it is presented in a short, concise way - a pin on a map, a picture and a short description. Adding anything further is not necessary for the site's intended purpose. 1st question - how best to tell the search engines what y site is - listings and not some spammy website? • Why are Win7 IE browers running in IE7 mode?

  On our site we currently have approx. 50% of our IE7 users running Windows 7. However, Win7 was released with IE8 meaning that something is not right. Based on this, we made the assumption that the modern IE browsers enter IE7 compatibility mode on our site. So we placed the "X-UA-Compatible=edge" meta tag on our site in hope to kill off IE7 support. However, after a week, the percentage of IE7 (and IE8) users have gone up for the first time since the start of this year. When looking at the X-UA-Compatible documentation, it is meant to be used for putting your site into an older mode. Is there any other way to make sure that IE doesn't enter compatibility mode? Is there something else we need to look for? And yes, we have so many users on our site that we can't kill off IE7 until it goes down under 2% of unique visitors. • Blank screen during boot after clean Ubuntu 11.10 install (Intel N10 graphics)

  After a clean install of Ubuntu 11.10 on my Asus eee PC 1005p, Ubuntu seems to boot correctly, except for initialization of the LCD screen. What I observe: I choose Ubuntu 11.10 in the GRUB 2 menu A blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen, for 15-20 seconds. The ubuntu logo with 5 red dots in the center of the screen, for 1 second. The LCD screen is entirely blank The startup sound plays (Ubuntu is configured to auto-login) Still, the LCD screen is entirely blank. When I press Fn-F8 (the switch between LCD screen and external VGA), the LCD screen shows my desktop correctly and everything seems to work fine. Except for the adjust contrast buttons (Fn-F5 and Fn-F6), these seem to cycle through random brightness modes. • Would this data requirement suit a Document -Oriented database?

  I have a requirement to allow users to fill in journal/diary entries per day. I want to provide a handful of known journal templates with x columns to fill in. An example might be a thought diary; a user has to record a thought in one column, describe the situation, rate how they felt etc. The other requirement is that a user should be able to create their own diary templates. They might have a need for a 10 column diary entry per day and might need to rate some aspect out of 50 instead of 10. In an RDBMS, I can see this getting quite complicated. I could have individual tables for my known templates as the fields will be fixed. But for custom diary templates I imagine I would would need a table storing custom_field_types (the diary columns), a table storing entries referencing their field types (custom_entries) and then a third custom_diary table which would store rows matching custom_entries to diaries. Leaving performance / scaling aside, would it be any simpler or make more sense to use a document oriented database like MongoDB to store this data? This is for a web application which might later need an API for mobile devices.

• Hosting woes

  Unfortunately quite a few people have noticed our recent hosting problems, but if you are reading this they should all be over, so please accept our apologies. Our former web host decided migrate to a new platform, it had all sorts or great features, but on reflection hosting wasn’t one of them. We knew it was coming, and had even been proactive and requested several dates on their migration control panel so I could be around to check it afterwards. The dates came and went without anything happening, so we sat back and carried on on for a couple of months thinking they’d get back to us when they were ready. Then out of the blue I get an email saying it has happened! Now this is what I call timing, I had client work to complete, a 50 minute presentation to write and there was a little conference called SQLBits that I help organise at the end of the week, and then our hosting provider decides to migrate our sites. Unfortunately they only migrated parts of the sites, they forgot things like the database for SQLDTS. The database eventually appeared, but the data didn’t. Then the data pitched up but without the stored procedures. I was even asked if I could perform a backup and send it to them, as they were getting timeout errors. Never mind the issues of performing a native backup on a hosted server, whilst I could have done something, the question actually left me speechless. So you cannot access your own SQL server and you expect me to be able to help? This site was there, but hadn’t been set as an IIS application so all path references were wrong which meant no CSS and all the internal navigation and links were wrong. The new improved hosting platform Control Panel didn't appear to like setting applications. It said it would, you’d have to wait 2 hours of course, then just decided not to bother after all. So needless to say after a very successful SQLBits I focused my attention on finding a new web host, and here we are again. Sorry it took so long.

• btrfs and missing free space

  I converted my ext4 partition to btrfs and deleted the save subvolume after doing so. Then I enabled the compression (lzo) of the filessystem in the fstab file and everything is correct so far. Then I forced the compression of all files using the defragmentation command with the parameter -c that the new compression is applied to all files. While doing so, I noticed that my ssd got completly filled up - before I had 6gigs of free space. • Using "gedit", a string of errors occours

  I'm trying to program some small programs in C in terminal and gedit. But everytime i use gedit then a string of errors occours. When i open a new file nothing happens. But in the exact same moment i save the file, then a string of erros coour. Also if i open an already existing file (not a new one), then when the gedit window opens the old file all the lines of errors are writen. In both cases in less than a second and nothing more happens. An example to the error: "error: line 35272: 0 is wrong flag id". They are all similar to this, except the line number is different. There are like 50 of them. I'm running 11.10, just installed it a couple of days again (yes, i'm a newbie) and i've updated all the files recently. I've tried reinstalling gedit via: sudo apt-get --reinstall install gedit It kinda made it worse, now a lot of the lines are shown twice. • How do I create an efficient long, pannable, sprite-animated scene in a Windows Store game?

  I am creating my first Windows Store application in XAML, and I cannot seem to find a proper example for the requirements I have. The basic idea of the app is to have a large scrollable canvas which would lazily start animating visible parts of the view as soon as user stops panning over a certain content (with some audio played also): My original idea was to use a StackPanel to add a bunch of custom controls, each of which would then animate itself once visible (with a short delay), but I have a couple of concerns: If the entire canvas is ~50 screen widths wide, is it feasible to load all content at the beginning, or do I need to plan doing some lazy loading during scrolling? For example, when I select a certain region in the Bing Travel app, it seems to lazily load tiles as I scroll it towards the end. Since content is stretched 100% vertically, and these animations are vectorized to be resolution independent, I am not sure if XAML (CompositionTarget) will be able to handle this, or I have to go for DirectX (MonoGame or C++) to get rid of flicker. Even better, is there an example for Windows 8 which uses a 100% vertically sized GridView with custom animated controls inside?

• Cocos2D: Change animation based on joystick direction

  I'm trying to get my figure to look in the right directions, based on the input of the joystick. So if I tilt left it looks left and the left animation is used, if I used right, it looks right and right animation is used, if up, then up, down, down and so on. I just get animation for front and back. • NetworkManager detects no networks with a RTL8188CE

  I'm on a 2011 Lenovo Thinkpad T420i with a Realtek RTL8188CE WiFi adapter. Here's the scenario: I pop in the Ubuntu LiveCD to install. Laptop detects all networks in range, I connect to my home network, internet working great. Once Ubuntu finishes installing, the home network I am connected to is the only one which appears in the applet list. Upon restarting or waking from suspend, NetworkManager does not detect any networks – it simply displays "Disconnected" under the Wireless Network section of the menu. I am able to connect to my home network by using the "Connect to Hidden Wireless Network" option and it works immediately. I have yet to test if this works with other SSIDs. I have tried reinstalling the entire OS as well as NetworkManager and my wireless drivers.
