• Tabbed terminal that connects to a GNU Screen session?

  I use the session feature of screen extensively. For example, I'll start a screen session for "project1" as "screen -S project1", and then when I need to reconnect I use "screen -d -r project1". This makes it easy to manage multiple projects, each with their own set of shell sessions. What I would love to do now is that when running on Windows and Linux, to be able to use a tabbed terminal program (such as gnome-terminal) to connect to a screen session and have all of the screen windows split out to separate tabs. This way I get all the usual power of screen, but with the convenience of a richer GUI experience. Is there any such terminal program available on Windows and/or Linux?

• Ignoring Robots - Or Better Yet, Counting Them Separately

  It is quite common to have web sessions that are undesirable from the point of view of analytics. For example, when there are either internal or external robots that check the site's health, index it or just extract information from it. These robotic session do not behave like humans and if their volume is high enough they can sway the statistics and models.One easy way to deal with these sessions is to define a partitioning variable for all the models that is a flag indicating whether the session is "Normal" or "Robot". Then all the reports and the predictions can use the "Normal" partition, while the counts and statistics for Robots are still available.In order for this to work, though, it is necessary to have two conditions:1. It is possible to identify the Robotic sessions.2. No learning happens before the identification of the session as a robot.The first point is obvious, but the second may require some explanation. While the default in RTD is to learn at the end of the session, it is possible to learn in any entry point. This is a setting for each model. There are various reasons to learn in a specific entry point, for example if there is a desire to capture exactly and precisely the data in the session at the time the event happened as opposed to including changes to the end of the session.In any case, if RTD has already learned on the session before the identification of a robot was done there is no way to retract this learning.Identifying the robotic sessions can be done through the use of rules and heuristics. For example we may use some of the following:Maintain a list of known robotic IPs or domainsDetect very long sessions, lasting more than a few hours or visiting more than 500 pagesDetect "robotic" behaviors like a methodic click on all the link of every pageDetect a session with 10 pages clicked at exactly 20 second intervalsDetect extensive non-linear navigationNow, an interesting experiment would be to use the flag above as an output of a model to see if there are more subtle characteristics of robots such that a model can be used to detect robots, even if they fall through the cracks of rules and heuristics.In any case, the basic and simple technique of partitioning the models by the type of session is simple to implement and provides a lot of advantages.

I see the first two used interchangeably, and sometimes in the same code I've seen differing uses of both. I want to know what is the most common convention It's been a very long time since I've programmed in C (15 years) so I can't remember if all variants are legal for C also or if this is Objective-C specific. I'd prefer answers which state why one is better than the other, as how I explained how I read it above.

• Is it a good practice to use smaller data types for variables to save memory?

  When I learned the C++ language for the first time I learned that besides int, float etc, smaller or bigger versions of these data types existed within the language. For example I could call a variable x int x; or short int x; The main difference being that short int takes 2 bytes of memory while int takes 4 bytes, and short int has a lesser value, but we could also call this to make it even smaller: int x; short int x; unsigned short int x; which is even more restrictive. My question here is if it's a good practice to use separate data types according to what values your variable take within the program. Is it a good idea to always declare variables according to these data types?

• Should I have link rel=next & prev on URLs which have query variables?

  For example, I have link rel prev & next set up on these pages of products: site.com?page=2 site.com?page=3 (this is my preferred structure by the way and I'm trying to get all the ugly URLs which are littered with query variables deindexed as they are causing duplicate content). So the above URLs are fine but once a filter to narrow product results is selected, like "price", the URL shows like this: site.com?price[1000-1499]=on site.com?page=2&price[1000-1499]=on As of right now, I am having the link rel prev & next dynamically added to the header of these pages but since I am working on getting these query variable URLs pages deindexed, I am wondering if I should get rid of it on these pages? Any thoughts?

  I find I tend to need intermediate variables. In Clojure that's in the form of let bindings, like cmp-result-1 and cmp-result-2 in the following function. (defn str-cmp "Takes two strings and compares them. Returns the string if a match; and nil if not." [str-1 str-2 start-pos substr-len] (let [cmp-result-1 (subs str-1 start-pos substr-len) cmp-result-2 (subs str-2 start-pos substr-len)] (compare cmp-result-1 cmp-result-2))) I could re-write this function without them, but to me, the function's purpose looks clearer. I tend to do this quite in a bit in my main, and that is primarily for debugging purposes, so I can pass a variable to print out intermediate output. Is this bad form, and, if so, why? Thanks.

  I'm going through some training on objective-c. The trainer suggests setting single character parameter names. The .NET developer in me is crying. Is this truly the convention? Why? For example, @interface Square : NSObject { int size; } -(void)setSize: (int)s; I've seen developers using underscores int _size to declar variables (I think people call the variable declared in @interface ivar for some unknown reason). Personally, I prefer to use descriptive names. E.G. @interface Square : NSObject { int Size; } -(void)setSize: (int)size; C, like C# is case sensitive. So why don't we use the same convention as .NET?

  I'm writing a charm that requires a mysql database, I found from looking at other charms that this (below) is how I get the info about the database: user=`relation-get user` password=`relation-get password` mysqlhost=`relation-get private-address` But I just found that from reading the wordpress charm example, is there a way to show all the relation variables that I can use? Also, while debugging my db-relation-changed script, I wanted to ssh into my host and interactively run those commands, for example relation-get user, but it didn't work. I resorted to having to restart everything and use juju log to print them out. This wasted a lot of time. Is there a way to print out these relations, either from my dev box or from the instance running my charm?   I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up? What's the proper way of handling this? Can we tell PAM to close the session once it sees the password has expired? As far as I can tell, the lack of "Rows waited on" plus the "S" in the Waiter waits column likely indicates that this is an ITL deadlock. Also, the table is written to quite often (roughly 8 insert or updates concurrently, as often as 240 times a minute), so and ITL deadlock seems like a strong possibility. I've increased the INITRANS parameter of the table and it's indexes to 100 and increased the PCT_FREE on the table from 10 to 20 (then rebuilt the indexes), but the deadlocks are still occurring. The deadlock seems to happen most often during an update, but that could just be a coincidence, as I've only traced it a couple of times. My questions are two-fold: 1) Is this actually an ITL deadlock? 2) If it is an ITL deadlock, what else can be done to avoid it? Cross-posted from Stack Overflow. Deadlocks are normally a programming problem, but ITL deadlocks relate directly to how Oracle writes to disk, so this may be an area where DBAs have more experience.

  We recently had one of the best community events in Ahmedabad. We were fortunate that we had SQL Experts from around the world to have presented at this event. This gathering was very special because besides Jacob Sebastian and myself, we had two other speakers traveling all the way from Florida (Rushabh Mehta) and Bangalore (Vinod Kumar).There were a total of nearly 170 attendees and the event was blast. Here are the details of the event. Pinal Dave Presenting at Community Tech Days On the day of the event, it seemed to be the coldest day in Ahmedabad but I was glad to see hundreds of people waiting for the doors to be opened some hours before. We started the day with hot coffee and cookies. Yes, food first; and it was right after my keynote. I could clearly see that the coffee did some magic right away; the hall was almost full after the coffee break. Jacob Sebastian Presenting at Community Tech Days Jacob Sebastian, an SQL Server MVP and a close friend of mine, had an unusual job of surprising everybody with an innovative topic accompanied with lots of question-and-answer portions. That’s definitely one thing to love Jacob, that is, the novelty of the subject. His presentation was entitled “Best Database Practices for the .Net”; it really created magic on the crowd. Pinal Dave Presenting at Community Tech Days Next to Jacob Sebastian, I presented “Best Database Practices for the SharePoint”. It was really fun to present Database with the perspective of the database itself. The main highlight of my presentation was when I talked about how one can speed up the database performance by 40% for SharePoint in just 40 seconds. It was fun because the most important thing was to convince people to use the recommendation as soon as they walk out of the session. It was really amusing and the response of the participants was remarkable. Pinal Dave Presenting at Community Tech Days My session was followed by the most-awaited session of the day: that of Rushabh Mehta. He is an international BI expert who traveled all the way from Florida to present “Self Service BI” session. This session was funny and truly interesting. In fact, no one knew BI could be this much entertaining and fascinating. Rushabh has an appealing style of presenting the session; he instantly got very much interaction from the audience. Rushabh Mehta Presenting at Community Tech Days We had a networking lunch break in-between, when we talked about many various topics. It is always interesting to get in touch with the Community and feel a part of it. I had a wonderful time during the break. Vinod Kumar Presenting at Community Tech Days After lunch was apparently the most difficult session for the presenter as during this time, many people started to fall sleep and get dizzy. This spot was requested by Microsoft SQL Server Evangelist Vinod Kumar himself. During our discussion he suggested that if he gets this slot he would make sure people are up and more interactive than during the morning session. Just like always, this session was one of the best sessions ever. Vinod is true to his word as he presented the subject of “Time Management for Developer”. This session was the biggest hit in the event because the subject was instilled in the mind of every participant. Vinod Kumar Presenting at Community Tech Days Vinod’s session was followed by his own small session. Due to “insistent public demand”, he presented an interesting subject, “Tricks and Tips of SQL Server“. In 20 minutes he has done another awesome job and all attendees wanted more of the tricks. Just as usual he promised to do that next time for us. Vinod’s session was succeeded by Prabhjot Singh Bakshi’s session. He presented an appealing Silverlight concept. Just the same, he did a great job and people cheered him. Prabhjot Presenting at Community Tech Days We had a special invited speaker, Dhananjay Kumar, traveling all the way from Pune. He always supports our cause to help the Community in empowering participants. He presented the topic about Win7 Mobile and SharePoint integration. This was something many did not even expect to be possible. Kudos to Dhananjay for doing a great job. Dhananjay Kumar Presenting at Community Tech Days All in all, this event was one of the best in the Community Tech Days series in Ahmedabad. We were fortunate that legends from the all over the world were present here to present to the Community. I’d say never underestimate the power of the Community and its influence over the direction of the technology. • What does "[IN-USE] account is locked by another session or for maintenance, try again." mean?

  I'm in the process of migrating a computer from Windows To Ubuntu. I followed these instructions to move my Thunderbird emails over. The emails that I moved show up, but when I try to check for new emails I get this message: Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server pop.windstream.net responded: [IN-USE] account is locked by another session or for maintenance, try again. I click OK and another box pops up saying: Login to server pop.windstream.net failed. With 3 options: "Enter new password" (I'm SURE the one I'm typing is correct) "Cancel" "Retry" I've tried all 3. Retyping my password, clicking "Retry", same result. While I was typing this, I got a toast that said: Thunderbird's attempt to connect to pop.windstream.net has timed out. What is causing this and how can I fix it?

• ASP.NET Session does not timeout on using ReportViewer Control.

  Hi, We are using the ReportViewer control to display SSRS reports in our ASP.NET application. On pages where we use the ReportViewer control the session does not time out. The reason for this is the ReportViewer control emits a "setTimeOut" javascript function which reads the Session timeout value from the web.config and pings the server 1 minute before the configured value and keeps the session alive. For example, if the session timeout value is 5 minutes, the ReportViewer pings the server on the 4th minute. We used fidldler to verify this behavior. In addition, if we remove the ReportViewer control from the page, the sessions times out as expected. We also tried using the ReportViewer control in a sample application and observed the same behaviour. Has anyone faced this issue? Regards, Saurabh

• What does transaction.commit() do when the flushmode is set manual in Hibernate?

  Here is a block of code in the Java Persistence with Hibernate book by Christian and Gavin, Session session = getSessionFactory().openSession(); session.setFlushMode(FlushMode.MANUAL); // First step in the conversation session.beginTransaction(); Item item = (Item) session.get(Item.class, new Long(123) ); session.getTransaction().commit(); // Second step in the conversation session.beginTransaction(); Item newItem = new Item(); Long newId = (Long) session.save(newItem); // Triggers INSERT! session.getTransaction().commit(); // Roll back the conversation! session.close();//enter code here I am confused that why the first step and second step need to be wrapped into two separate transactions? Since the flushmode is set manual here, no operations (suppose we ignore the insert here) will hit the database anyway. So why bother with transactions here? thanks

Securing with ContainedDB in SQL Server 2012 – Pranab is expert when it is about SQL Server and Security. I have seen him presenting and he is indeed very pleasant to watch. A dry subject like security, he makes it much lively. A Contained Database is a database which contains all the necessary settings and metadata, making database easily portable to another server. This database will contain all the necessary details and will not have to depend on any server where it is installed for anything. You can take this database and move it to another server without having any worries. Day 3, March 23, 2012 Peeling SQL Server like an Onion: Internals Demystified – Vinod Kumar has been writing about this extensively on his other blog post. In recent conversation he suggested that he will be creating very exclusive content for this presentation. I know Vinod for long time and have worked with him along many community activities. I have few difficult questions to ask to Amit and I am very sure that his unique style will entertain people. By the way, his one of the slide may give few in audience a funny heart attack. Top 5 reasons why you want SQL Server 2012 BI – Praveen plans to take a tour of some of the BI enhancements introduced in the new version. Business Insights with SQL Server is a critical building block and this version of SQL Server is no exception. For the matter of the fact, when I saw the demos he was going to show during this session, I felt like that I wish I can set up all of this on my machine.   After presenting the SQL Developer PL/SQL debugger for about an hour yesterday at KScope12 in San Antonio, my boss came up and asked, “Now, would you really want to know what the Smart Data panel does?” Apparently I had ‘made up’ my own story about what that panel’s intent is based on my experience with it. Not good Jeff, not good. It was a very small point of my presentation, but I probably should have read the docs. The Smart Data tab displays information about variables, using your Debugger: Smart Data preferences. You can also specify these preferences by right-clicking in the Smart Data window and selecting Preferences. Debugger Smart Data Preferences, control number of variables to display The Smart Data panel auto-inspects the last X accessed variables. So if you have a program with 26 variables, instead of showing you all 26, it will just show you the last two variables that were referenced in your program. If you were to click on the ‘Data’ debug panel, you’ll see EVERYTHING. And if you only want to see a very specific set of values, then you should use Watches. The Smart Data Panel As I step through the code, the variables being tracked change as they are referenced. Only the most recent ones display. This is controlled by the ‘Maximum Locations to Remember’ preference. Step through the code, see the latest variables accessed The Data Panel All variables are displayed. Might be information overload on large PL/SQL programs where you have many dozens or even hundreds of variables to track. Shows everything all the time Watches Watches are added manually and only show what you ask for. Data on Demand – add a watch to track a specific variable Remember, you can interact with your data If you want to do more than just watch, you can mouse-right on a data element, and change the value of the variable as the program is running. This is one of the primary benefits to debugging over using DBMS_OUTPUT to track what’s happening in your program. Change the values while the program is running to test your ‘What if?’ scenarios

• Can anyone tell me why Gnome 3 looks like as if it were a gnome fallback session in my virtualbox?

  For some reason Gnome 3 wont work in my virtualbox. Both gnome classic and gnome look exactly identical. The version of my virtualbox is: 4.1.2_ Ubuntu r38459 The 3D acceleration is on in the virtualbox and the Guest Additions is installed in the virtualbox from the software center. Obviously, the graphic card driver is installed on the main Ubuntu system I am using with my laptop. (although the post-release updates can't be installed for whatever reason) Gnome shell is installed from the software center in the virtualbox. Now the issue is that the gnome and gnome classic look like just the same. Here is an image of what gnome looks like (so does gnome classic too....so I am only posting one image): What causes this issue? By the way....I am using Ubuntu 11.10 with gnome fallback session.

• How do I know if my game's average game session time is too small?

  My game has only one life, and the aim is to stay alive as long as possible to get as many points as possible (it's an endless runner). Using Google Analytics I found that players are staying alive for an average of 17 seconds. I could easily increase or decrease this by manipulating acceleration or starting speed. The question is, should I change it at all? Is there any research or general ideas on the best playing time for a game like this? I would also like to know about any research about how long an ideal mobile game session should last.
