• How can I diagnose a "502 Bad Gateway" response from an Apache/Tomcat configuration?

  I just finished up configuring a fairly default configuration of Tomcat. My Apache configuration was pre-existing and post-tomcat it still has no issues. I am using mod_jk to (if I am saying this correctly) interface between Apache and Tomcat and have my conf files setup for my workers, etc. I put my test file (Simply: http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-4.1-doc/appdev/sample/web/hello.jsp) into my tomcat/webapps/ directory and then call it via http://localhost/test/hello.jsp. From here Apache returns a "502 Bad Gateway" response. I confirmed this via the Apache logs, but beyond that I have no idea how to diagnose the issue. I assume the 502 is because Tomcat did not respond. I'd like to confirm if Tomcat received the request, but cannot locate the log file. At this point I had thought my installation was complete, so not sure where to go from here. Any input would be appreciated.

• Music tagging software more consistent than Tag&Rename?

  A few years ago I spent an insane amount of time using the excellent Tag&Rename program. However, I find that for random, inexplicable reasons, some music tools simply disregard my tags, drop or destroy the album art, or have strange handling around some characters. For example, "AC/DC" is poorly handled by most music players when I use Tag&Rename to write the tags. And if I write the tag in iTunes, Winamp seems to not like it, vice versa, and neither of those work with Amarok. Is there a piece of software that works like Tag&Rename but is more compatible, or is there a way to ensure Tag&Rename writes more compatible tags?

  Hi, I need a software or simply an excel worksheet to schedule my employees. I have 16 lifeguards and 9 headguards, two of which act as coordinators one day a week. All employees cannot work more than 40 hours a week because of the provincial law. Furthermore, they must staff 6 beaches. Everybeach has different staffing needs. Furthermore, I would like the application to be able to to take into considerations all employees needs such as vacation days and prefered beaches. Finally I would like to create a staff rotation between beaches to encourage employee motivation. Is there an open source application for my needs available out there ?

• Setting up a router as a DNS server only

  I have a Linksys WRT54GL router that I don't need anymore, since I had to buy a 3G capable router (Dovado 3GN). As I only have a 3G connection at home, I want to optimize it as much as possible. I want to setup a caching DNS server, including some blacklisting of ad domains. The router currently runs the DD-WRT firmware. Is it possible to use this router as an ordinary computer, running only a DNS server, disabling all other features such as DHCP, WLAN, etc? Connecting it to my other router, should I simply run a cable into the WAN-port of the Linksys router?

• linux display drivers

  I've run into a major display problem on newly installed fedora 11, on my 6 years old pc which runs a pentium4 2.4 GHz processor, 1 gb ddr ram, intel 845 motherboard with integrated graphics card. When i open an image or play a video, my complete screen turns garbled. I simply cannot make out whats on my screen. With difficulty i have to close the image/video window and move around the folder window to clean the screen image. Is it because of my display drivers? How can i fix it? I also ran into mp3 plugins and flash issues which i was able to resovle. I'm new to linux, the sole purpose of isntalling it on my old pc was to learn linux but this display problem is frustrating me. Thanks, Salman

• How do I apply WinHTTP proxy settings domain-wide?

  We're already configuring Internet Explorer proxy settings through group policy and it works great. Sadly, I've recently run into multiple issues where those settings are ignored by certain services. I realized that these service have one thing in common. They use WinHTTP, which has its own proxy settings. Now I'm asking myself how to apply those across the whole domain. I realize that I could create a logon script and simply run netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie, but, from experience I know that these settings require a reboot to take effect. So this wouldn't help me at all in a logon script. So, how can I do it?

• The laptop screen goes black after 6 seconds. What can I do?

  I was given a Dell Latitude D-610 today that have a strange display problem : when the computer boot, screen goes black after 6 seconds (delay after which I can still see images, provided light is at the right angle). When such a thing happen, I can get an image again by simply closing the laptop and opening it again. So. What can I do to have the screen working again? opening it and finding in the cable mess which one is responsible for the neon to turn off? considering it lost and cannibalize its parts?

• Teamviewer and Virtualbox issue: some keys don't work

  I use Teamviewer on a laptop to connect to a desktop computer running Debian Linux. On this desktop computer I run Windows inside a VirtualBox VM. I have no problems interacting directly with Linux, but when I try to interact with Windows inside Virtualbox, some keys simply don't work! (e.g. period, "@", quotes). Is there something I can do to make the full keyboard of my laptop work correctly with the Virtualbox VM inside the remote host? Specs: The remote host machine is an Intel i7 running Debian squeezy (64 bit) I'm using Teamviewer 7, on both the host machine and the laptop Thanks

• Process ANSI escape codes before piping

  I'm trying to pipe the output of a script (Mocha) to another script. However there is one problem: Mocha generates quite a few ansi escape characters to update the screen on the fly. These characters are also send through the pipe. Is there a way to process the ansi sequence such that the output is the same as the final output to the screen? I do want to keep color escape sequences, but not the curser movement escapes. Edit: I have a partial solution now (for Mocha only): so far it seems that Mocha with the spec output (the one I use) only generates color ecape characters and the CSI 0G escape sequence. The CSI 0G escape character means that the cursor should move back to the beginning of the line. Mocha uses this to overwrite a line completely. Therefore you could simply create a sed regexp which will delete everything up to that escape sequence on a line: sed 's/^.*\x1b\[0G//g'. I am still looking for the complete solution though.

• Windows hangs on Rename, Delete and Move for specific MKV files

  I have been googling this issue for a long time, and no full solutions seem to be out there. For certain mkv files, windows hangs when moving, copying, or deleting. These files play fine in a player such as GOM player. System: a fast windows 7, 64 bit box. Results: CPU change is negligible Memory usage rockets up to ~100% In cased of delete or move, "discovering files" dialogue box stays up for a long time Rename simply shows spinning icon until it finishes Action is completed after EXTREMELY long amount of time Memory usage does not return to normal "Fixes:" Disable thumbnail creation (helps for some cases) After move/rename/delete kill explorer with taskmanager, and relaunch to re-claim your memory Even with the thumbnails turned off, the issue persists. I have also tried re-muxing a file, which worked fine, but still resulted in a file with the same above issues.

• Cheapest Embedded System with Wireless Connectivity?

  Problem: I'm trying to capture some information coming from keyboard, mouse and barcode reader connected to some PC via PS/2, USB and/or RS-232, before information get to PC and send it over the Internet to some central server. I'm thinking to do so by using some kind of hardware interface (middleware, if you like) between PC and input devices. I thought this interface can be embedded PC, PDA or simply some mobile phone with wireless connectivity. PS/2 and RS-232 could be converted to USB using some USB convector/hub that connects to one of these interface systems. Then some special API programming take place to communicate between PC, input devices and wireless server, in the form of application running on the interface system. What's the cheapest solution that can achieve this? Or possibly any other solution?

  Hello! I want to keep my blog in subfolder domain_com/htdocs/blog and access it using blog.domain.com. I can obtain it using apache's mod_rewrite: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^blog\.domain\.com RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^/blog RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /blog/$1 [L] But I also want to redirect hxxp://domain.com/blog to hxxp://blog.domain.com (simply because I want to hide it from users). Simple redirection like: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^wojtyniak\.com$ RewriteRule %{REQUEST_URI} ^/foo RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://foo.wojtyniak.com [L,R=301] causes redirection loop.   My problem is basically identical to the following: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=61826 Put simply, I have a machine in ubuntu trying to connect to another ubuntu machine via a network in order to use the printer attached. There is no problem printing until I restart the guest machine. Immediately it overwrites the printers.conf file (under /etc/cups/printers.conf). It always adds the same line: AuthInfoRequired username,password I stop cups and change it to *#*AuthInfoRequired username,password to comment out the command. Start cups. Works great 'til the next shutdown. Then it gets overwritten again. Googling indicates it may be GTK problem and not CUPS, but I have found no permanent solution to date. Any suggestions appreciated ....

• How do I setup unison to sync a folder one way

  I have a 1tb NAS that has a 1tb usb external hard attached I have prepared the file system on the usb disk and mounted it I want to 100% sync my data from my nas to the usb disk - but I want it to be incremental and only have the NAS as the 'master' - eg if a file changes on the usb external hard drive I want it to ignore this change as its not the live version (not that I think the files will change on the usb disk but im paranoid the live could get overwritten) Also if a file gets deleted on live I want to retain the deleted file on the usb disk Can unison sync one-way and achive the above for me? if so with simply unison sorce/ target/ Work? • Can a Double-Density Floppy drive be swapped out for a High-Density drive?

  I'm trying to fix the floppy drive in my Roland MC-500. The floppy drive inside is a Matsushita DDF3-1 which doesn't seem to be in production anymore. The DDF3-2 is still available, however it is an HD drive. Does anyone know off the top of their heads if there is any issue with simply swapping the two drives? Could the power usage be different on the drives? Since the machine is expecting a 720k DD drive, are there any jumper settings to have the HD drive function as a DD drive?

• Trucrypt or any HDD encryption solution with a bypass?

  Hello experts, in my environment here we have started using trucrypt to encrypt and protect our laptops that are being brought out of the office. The issue comes with the password, we can document the passwords and assign them to users but if they simply use the program to change the password, and then forget it we are in trouble. We backup our data to external locations so it should be fine, but is there any way to install a bypass to be able to boot the laptop or stpo users changing their password (while they have local admin access)? Or should we try another solution? thanks.

  I get a GPF dialog box out of the blue fairly often (like about 2 hours after I turn on the computer). It basically says that svchost.exe had a failure... (see the corresponding Event Log entry below). Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 5/18/2010 Time: 7:41:16 PM User: N/A Computer: DKHA-IPSA Description: Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.5512, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0004eaa9. Shortly after this error pops up, the computer pretty much grinds to a halt (e.g. some UI elements on the desktop simply do not respond). And I have to do a hard reboot. How do I troubleshoot this type of thing? P.S. The PC has all the latest patches and nothing is missing in the Device Manager.

  I am running Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 Pro x64 on a domain. Outlook is connecting to exchange, and the username and password should be pulled from my logon credentials. The problem is, about every few hours, outlook "forgets" what my password is. In the taskbar, a caution triangle appears, and in the bottom right hand corner of exchange, a "Needs Password" replaces "Connected to Microsoft Exchange." Simply clicking "Needs Password" fixes the issue, and new messages are downloaded. What could the issue be? What could be timing out? • Nested RDP and ILO sessions, latency and keystroke repetition.

  I'm working on a remote server installation entirely through ILO. Due to the software application and environment, my access is restricted to a Windows server that I must access through RDP. Going from that system to the target server is accomplished via HP ILO3. I'm trying to run a CentOS installation in an environment where I can't use a kickstart. I'm doing this via text mode, but the keystrokes are repeating randomly and it's difficult to select the proper installation options. I'm doing this using Microsoft's native RDP client (on Mac and Windows). I've also noticed this before when running installations or doing remote work in nested sessions. Is there a nice fix for this, or it it simply a function of the protocol?

• Receive emails on Amazon EC2 Server

  I just got started with an EC2 instance and got my mail sending limit removed, allowing me to send emails from my instance. But due to lack of experience, I have no clue on how to enable receiving emails send to me on that server. The instance has an elastic IP and I have a domain name with an A record pointing to that IP. I cant seem to find better documentation on what steps need to be taken so if someone sends an email to [email protected] it either actually receives it or simply forwards it to my personal email. • How to recursively move all files (including hidden) in a subfolder into a parent folder in *nix?

  This is a bit of an embracing question, but I have to admit that this late in my career I still have questions about the mv command. I frequently have this problem: I need to move all files recursively up one level. Let's say I have folder foo, and a folder bar inside it. Bar has a mess of files and folders, including dot files and folders. How do I move everything in bar to the foo level? If foo is empty, I simply move bar one level above, delete foo and rename bar into foo. Part of the problem is that I can't figure out what mv's wildcard for "everything including dots" is. A part of this question is this - is there an in-depth discussion of the wildcards that cp and mv commands use somewhere (googling this only brings very basic tutorials).

• NIC bonding with two uplinks

  Is bonding the preferred way of implementing ISP redundancy? In the texts I've seen, bond device has a netmask, gateway of it's own. How can this be obtained if there are two different gateways from two uplinks, which one to choose? Do I need any special routing rules to go with it or does simply configuring separate interfaces (using Debian, /etc/network/interfaces), i.e eth1, eth2 for their corresponding uplinks and bonding them to bond0 handle routing automatically? If I want to NAT client machines, do they use bond device's IP as a gateway? Does the bond0 device is the device that goes into iptables nat rules? Thanks

• HP Probook 4530s great specs, but lagging. Hard Drive?

  I have this laptop, which has a i3 processor, 4gb memory, 7200rpm hard drive. So there is nothing wrong with the specs. Even when I have no applications open, simply closing and opening windows, lags. Or opening the start menu, or dragging icons across the desktop. sometimes even the cursor lags. So I checked out the resource monitor, and the resources using disk activity are svchost Avast ------- my antivirus, but not much System (PID 4) ------ This is using a huge chunk The total disk activity fluctuates between %50 - %100
