• The right way to manage subviews in a UIControl

  (iPhone SDK 3.x:) I have a UIControl subclass that creates a different number of subviews depending on the length of an NSArray property. Please take my word for it that this needs to be a UIControl rather than a UIView. Currently I implement subview management in drawRect, beginning by removing all subviews and then creating the appropriate number based on the property. I don't think this is very good memory management and I'm not sure if drawRect is really the appropriate place to add subviews. Any thoughts on the best way to handle this pattern? Thank you.

• Can I find out the number of searches on a given keyword, per state?

  I know that Google tells you how many times a certain keyword is used in a search. You can use the Google Keyword Tool for that. This tool also allows you to find out the number of "local" searches: this is the number of times a person from a given country searches for this keyword. My questions: can you also find out how many searches originate from a given American state ? In the Keyword Tool, I can only select countries, not states. Any other systems I can use to determine where people are searching for a given keyword?

• How to I serialize a large graph of .NET object into a SQL Server BLOB without creating a large bu

  We have code like: ms = New IO.MemoryStream bin = New System.Runtime.Serialization.Formatters.Binary.BinaryFormatter bin.Serialize(ms, largeGraphOfObjects) dataToSaveToDatabase = ms.ToArray() // put dataToSaveToDatabase in a Sql server BLOB But the memory steam allocates a large buffer from the large memory heap that is giving us problems. So how can we stream the data without needing enough free memory to hold the serialized objects. I am looking for a way to get a Stream from SQL server that can then be passed to bin.Serialize() so avoiding keeping all the data in my processes memory. Likewise for reading the data back... Some more background. This is part of a complex numerical processing system that processes data in near real time looking for equipment problems etc, the serialization is done to allow a restart when there is a problem with data quality from a data feed etc. (We store the data feeds and can rerun them after the operator has edited out bad values.) Therefore we serialize the object a lot more often then we de-serialize them. The objects we are serializing include very large arrays mostly of doubles as well as a lot of small “more normal” objects. We are pushing the memory limit on a 32 bit system and make the garage collector work very hard. (Effects are being made elsewhere in the system to improve this, e.g. reusing large arrays rather then create new arrays.) Often the serialization of the state is the last straw that courses an out of memory exception; our peak memory usage is while this serialization is being done. I think we get large memory pool fragmentation when we de-serialize the object, I expect there are also other problem with large memory pool fragmentation given the size of the arrays. (This has not yet been investigated, as the person that first looked at this is a numerical processing expert, not a memory management expert.) Are customers use a mix of Sql Server 2000, 2005 and 2008 and we would rather not have different code paths for each version of Sql Server if possible. We can have many active models at a time (in different process, across many machines), each model can have many saved states. Hence the saved state is stored in a database blob rather then a file. As the spread of saving the state is important, I would rather not serialize the object to a file, and then put the file in a BLOB one block at a time. • How to remap Fn key combinations (Lenovo G500)

  I am running Kubuntu 13.10 on a Lenovo G500 laptop. My question is similar to this one: How can I remap my F keys on my HP laptop? That is to say, my F1-F12 keys are mapped to certain special functions, and only holding down the Fn key restores access to the standard F1-F12 keys. How do I remap certain keys? I would like to know if there is a way to remap Fx to Fn+Fx and vice-versa. As per the instructions of #87043 I checked my BIOS and there is no option to switch the Fx/Fn key functionality. Googling through Leonovo's support forums indicates a BIOS update enabling this is in the works, but there's no indication of when it will be complete. Using xev I was able to see what X sees when F1-F12 are pressed. Some send separate keycodes, but some are somehow mapped to key combinations or other unknown things: F1 - XF86AudioMute F2 - XF86AudioVolumeLower F3 - XF86AudioVolumeRaise F4 - Alt_L + F4 F5 - F5 F6 - Disables touchapd, cannot quite understand what xev tells me is happening, reenables if disabled (Kernel log reveals these have well-defined scancodes not assigned to any keycodes) F7 - XF86WLAN F8 - Alt_L + Ctrl_L + Tab F9 - Turns off LCD backlight, xev sees nothing F10 - Super_L + p F11 - XF86MonBrightnessLower F12 - XF86MonBrightnessRaise Following the instrusctions on this page: How do I remap certain keys? • Are there any tools to help the user to design a State Machine to be consumed by my application?

  When reading this question I remembered there was something I have been researching for a while now and I though Stackoverflow could be of help. I have created a framework that handles applications as state machines. Currently all the state business logic and transactions are handled via Java code. I was looking for some UI implementation that would allow the user to draw the state machines and transactions and generate a file that can later on be consumed by my framework to "run" the workflow according to one or more defined state machines. Ideally I would like to use an open standard like SCXML. The goal as the UI would be to have something like this plugin IBM have for Rational Software Architect: Do you know any editor, plugin or library that would have something similar or at least serve as a good starting point?

• Could not connect to wireless unitl reboot (nl80211)

  I'm using Samsung NP900X3C. I have problem with occasionally connecting to WIFI, with Ubuntu 12.10. Sometimes my computer could not connect to WIFI "blab", neither after reboot computer. Only solution is to restart WIFI hotspot. It's public WIFI, used by many users, that don't have that problem. • What is the state of the art in OOP?

  I used to do a lot of object-oriented programming and found myself reading up a lot on how to do it well. When C++ was the dominant OOP language there was a very different set of best practices than have emerged since. Some of the newer ideas I know of are BDD, internal DSLs, and the importing of ideas from functional programming. My question is: is there any consensus on the best way to develop object-oriented software today in the more modern languages such as C#, Ruby, and Python? And what are those practices? For instance, I rather like the idea of stateless objects but how many are actually using that in practice? Or, is the state of the art to deemphasize the importance of OOP? This might be the case for some Python programmers but would be difficult for Rubyists.

• Restore Emacs Session/Desktop

  I've been searching for how to restore an emacs session, with no luck. I'm looking to restore all previously open buffers, some of which might contain erc, shells, directory listings, files, etc. Every time I open emacs, I spend a considerable amount of time arranging my buffers; splitting them into rows and columns, opening a shell, arranging irc channels. It takes a while to get onto work. I've tried adding the following to my init.el (desktop-save-mode 1) And then using M-x desktop-save. This only seems to restore files that are open, not shells or anything else running within buffers. I've also checked the following questions (sorry, not able to post links yet): Session management in emacs using Desktop library Emacs session / projects / window management Emacs: reopen buffers from last session on startup? And read through: DeskTop and EmacsSession at emacswiki.org/emacs/SessionManagement Here's a screenshot example of my emacs session. A simple answer would be to just focus on real work :P

• Why 11.10 says plymouth errors and "Checking battery state..."?

  I've just installed new Ubuntu 11.10. The installation was successful. But when I start the Ubuntu, the splash screen does not work, and I get error (always some of these) "mountall: Plymouth command failed", "mountall: Connect to Plymouth was lost" or "Checking battery state..." I'm sorry, if the error messages are incorrect because I translated two first of them from Finnish (my system is in Finnish) to English, so they maybe couldn't be just right. I have already asked from our Finnish community, but they couldn't answer. Could anybody here?

• Using components in the XNA Game State Management example?

  In the game state management example at the App Hub, they say that if you want to use components in the example you can extend the GameScreen to host other components inside itself. I'm having a very hard time trying to tie this up. I tried extending the GameScreen class by adding a public property of public List<DrawableGameCompnent> components { get; set; } and then add my components to that list when I initialize the current screen as well as looping over the components in the LoadContent, Update and Draw methods. However, this doesn't feel like the correct way to go - mainly because it doesn't work when I get to the implementation of my GameplayScreen. Any thoughts?

• What is the state-of-the-art for using Broadcom Crystal hardware?

  I just bought a Dell Mini 1012, which comes with a Broadcom Crystal media accelerator chip. I'd like to know what is the current state-of-the-art with regard to using this hardware on Ubuntu? What I mean by this is, what is the best way to install drivers to make use of this hardware, and what media players currently support it? I've read that XBMC currently does, but what about gstreamer? Ideally, I'd like to find a solution so that I can accelerate Flash videos using the device. It seems like one strategy may be to download Flash videos to the hard drive and play them with an external, Crystal-enabled media player, and so that seems like one option, but I'm wondering if any of the free flash alternatives (Gnash and Lightspark) support hardware acceleration of flash video using the Crystal API? It seems like there is a lot of information about all of this on the web, but it's not consolidated, and seems like a rapidly moving target, so any insight anyone may have into this would be appreciated.

  When I moved to Objective C (iOS) from C++ (and little Java) I had hard time understanding memory management in iOS. But now all this seems natural and I know retain, autorelease, copy and release stuff. After reading about ARC, I am wondering is there more benefits of using ARC or it is just that you dont have to worry about memory management. Before moving to ARC I wanted to know how worth is moving to ARC. XCode has "Convert to Objective C ARC" menu. Is the conversion is that simple (nothing to worry about)? Does it help me in reducing my apps memory foot-print, memory leaks etc (somehow ?) Does it has much testing impact on my apps ? What are non-obvious advantages? Any Disadvantage os moving to it?

  I'm new to SQL and relational databases and I have what I would imagine is a common problem. I'm making a website and when each user submits a post they have to provide a location in either a zip code or a City/State. What is the best practice for handling this? Do I simply create a Zip Code and City and State table and query against them or are there ready made solutions for handling this? I'm using SQL Server 2005 if it makes a difference. I need to be able to retrieve a zip code given a city/state or I need to be able to spit out the city state given a zip code.

• After deploying services I get incorrect public adress

  I deployed wordpress and when I type juju status I recievie this: public-adress: node-001185e6777fe When I found what is IP adress of this computer I tried type in webbrowser but I get 502 bad gateway. • What approaches are available to revert an IDirect3DDevice9 instance to its default render state?

  Given an instance of IDirect3DDevice9, what approaches are available to put it in its original render state (i.e. the state it was in when the device was initially created)? The cleanest way that I've come across is to create a state block via IDirect3DDevice9::CreateStateBlock just after the device has been created so that it can be applied later. Unfortunately, I'm operating under the constraints of an existing project such that I can't modify the device creation code; by the time my component gets the device, its default state has been modified. CountryState model is used to store all states which is foreign key to Country model At the time of form loading i am getting all state names in dropdown while i want field to be blank by default. If name field is empty at the time of form save i am getting error that name can not be empty but also getting all states into dropdown list while i want only the states which are mapped with current selected country.

I understand very well that everyone starting with that SDK is too exited about getting its hand on it but a few reading would save them hours of debugging and the frustration that come along with the feeling that "We miss something here". I'd like experience users to share the few small articles, white papers, docs, book chapters that helps other save their time and avoid frustration. My first vote would be for : IOS Memory Management Guide View Controller Programming Guide Table View Guide And as a General recommendation, read the Overview section that come along with every class documention in the reference library, they contains most of what you need to know to avoid big traps !

Please resume and shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option. i get this error i have disabled fast start up in windows 8. what can i do i shut down my computer 4 times in windows and disabled fast start in windows 8. i'm using Ubuntu 13.10. please help thanks.

• Why do they initialize pointers this way?

  In almost all of the books I read and examples I go through I see pointers initialized this way. Say that I have a class variable NSString *myString that I want to initialize. I will almost always see that done this way: -(id)init { if (self = [super init]) { NSString *tempString = [[NSString alloc] init]; myString = tempString; [tempString release]; } return self; } Why can't I just do the following? -(id)init { if (self = [super init]) { myString = [[NSString alloc] init]; } return self; } I don't see why the extra tempString is ever needed in the first place, but I could be missing something here with memory management. Is the way I want to do things acceptable or will it cause some kind of leak? I have read the Memory Management Guide on developer.apple.com and unless I am just missing something, I don't see the difference.
