• How to identify RAID (5 or 6) controllers that allow dynamic resize of the array

  I'm building a server with a RAID5 array, based on a hardware controller. I want to be able to later add additional disks and have the array rebalance across all of the disks, enlarging the usable size. I also want to be able to later upgrade to bigger disks (one at a time, of course) and then expand the array to fill the entire drive. These features are available in Linux software raid (md). I've also heard they're available in some hardware controllers. Currently, I own the Adaptec RAID 3805 card and the 3ware 9650se card. I'd prefer to use the Adaptec if possible, but I can't find if either of these cards offer this feature. If they don't, are there other affordable (read as: sub-$600) RAID cards available that can accomplish this?

• Firefox- How to change font size of items in bookmarks sidebar

  In Windows. (I know I can open Desktop > Properties > Appearance > Advanced [and figure out which item determines it; probably Menu]. But, I don't want other things changed - just the bookmarks. This is because I have so many and I want more of them to display. I did see the question on changing font size of items in folder, on bookmarks toolbar, and sub-folders, etc; But, I'm talking sidebar on firefox, I don't have Google Chrome and I am not a developer.

• Delete recursive directorys with FTP command on Bash

  I have a problem with my infrastructure here. I am in a closed DMZ and have to access a FTP-Server in another DMZ from a headless Suse Linux 10.1. So i think i only got the ftp command.. But i have to delete a directory with about 100 subdirectorys and endless files in it.. When I type del directory it returns "Its not empty" and so i have to delete each sub directory and file manually. Oh please tell me a way how i can do this automatically :)

• Dir and Findstr commands taking a long time to complete in Batch File

Now the issues is that for one folder it works perfect, but for 80 to 90 folders it is taking too much time. I think it's because of findstr and the different extensions used. Is there any way to make it faster?

• Is there a way to rsync in batches?

  I have a huge chunk of data (11G) in a subversion repository that I'm using rsync to migrate to Alfresco, which lucene indexes new files as they hit the file system. I'm using a dav mount as a proxy to allow me to rsync. The issue I'm having is the indexing post-rsync is quite an expensive operation for such a huge chunk of data, so I was wondering whether there's a way I could logically separate the rsync into identically-sized batches (say 500MB each) so I could schedule them in cron. At the moment, I'm traversing the top level folders and taking the smallest ones across first, but once I'm done with those, the much larger sub-directories are going to be quite troublesome.   I tried the solution in my previous question (flattening XML to load via SSIS package), however this isn't working. I now know what I need to do, however I need some guidance on how to do it. So say I have the following XML structure: <person id="1"> <name>John</name> <surname>Smith</surname> <age>25</age> <comment> <comment_id>1</comment_id> <comment_text>Hello</comment_text> </comment> <comment> <comment_id>2</comment_id> <comment_text>Hello again!</comment_text> </comment> <somethingelse> <id>1</id> </somethingelse> <comment> <comment_id>3</comment_id> <comment_text>Third Item</comment_text> </comment> </person> <person id="2"> <name>John</name> <surname>Smith</surname> <age>25</age> <somethingelse> <id>1</id> </somethingelse> </person> ... ... If I am to load this into a SSIS package, as an XML source, what I will essentially get is a table created for each element, as opposed to get a structured table output such as person table (name, surname, age) somethingelse table (id) comment table (comment_id, comment_text) What I end up getting is: person table (person_Id <-- internal SSIS id) name table surname table age table person_name table person_surname table person_comment_comment_id table etc... What I found was that if each element and all inner elements are not in the same format and consistency, i will get the above anomaly which makes it rather complex especially if I am dealing with 80 - 100+ columns. Unfortunately I have no way of modifying the system (Lotus Notes) that produces these reports, so I was wondering whether I may be able to explicitly have an XSLT template that will be able to align each person sub elements (and the sub collection elements such as comments ? Unless there is a quicker way to realign all inner elements. Seems that SSIS XML source requires a very consistent XML file in the sense of: if the name element is in position 1, then all subsequent name elements within person parent have to be in position 1. SSIS seems to pickup the inconsistencies if there are certain elements missing from one parent to another, however, if their ordering is not right (A, B, C)(A, B, C)(A,C,B), it will chuck a massive fuss!   Is it possible to mirror the two directories without overwritting the files in destination directory with new/changed/deleted files. Something like snapshots. Example: Copy the source directory with all files and sub-directories to destination directory, but if destination directory contains, for example, file A.xls and A.xls has been changed in source directory then copy A.xls but keep the previous A in destination directory as well. To preserve the previous file a datestamp, or counter can be added to the file name. Example after copy: SomeDirectory |--A.xls |--A_20120701.xls |--A_20120920.xls Thank you.

• Splitting Multiple Files in Windows

  We have a 21TB LUN full of images that are approx 600K in size in multiple sub folders on the disk. We are trying to split the 21TB LUN into 8 smaller LUNs that are about 2.6TB a piece in order to process the images more effectively. My question is how we can determine what 2.6TB is on the drive? What is the best tool to mark this data so we can copy it to the new smaller LUNs with robocopy or emcopy without overfilling the smaller LUNs? Is there a third-party tool that would be better suited for this task? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

  My mother was nearly brought to tears because My Pictures is no longer under My Documents. Everything in Windows (7) works around My Pictures being in its own location, with "Libraries" and everything. Her Picasa wants to index My Pictures, but finds it empty. What's more is that Microsoft created, as a compatibility hack, a junction for anyone who hard-codes My Pictures as being a sub-folder of My Documents: <JUNCTION> My Pictures [C:\Users\Mom\Pictures] What's more is that there is Pictures ? My Pictures I'm about ready to tell her that her new computer is being taken away until she either accepts the changes, or dies. Suggestions?

• Apache ProxyPass/ProxyPassReverse to IIS

  We have an ASP.NET web application which is mapped to a folder on an apache hosted php site using ProxyPass.ProxyPassReverse. A couple of problems being encountered. cookies are being lost which breaks the site navigation, this can be overcome by setting the asp app as cookieless. Forms authentication is used on the ASP site, this is also broken withe the proxypass in place, suspect this is cookie related also. ASP site works ok when run from a domain/ip address. Use of a separate domain / sub-domain is not an option duew to client requirements.

• How to get the value of an item from database and set it as the spinner value

  I have a database and the database populates a listview. when i long press a list item from the listview i get a context menu where i have the option to edit. When the edit option is clicked i open an activity and get all the values of the respective fields from the database. Now, here I want to get a value from the database and show it in the spinner. the spinner already has these values and is getting populated from the database... I have tried the following, but i get an error saying I can't cast a SimpleCursorAdapter to an ArrayAdapter.. • Copy a single file from main directory recursively across all directories within

  I'm on a dedicated server using CentOS, and on this server I have 5000+ directories in one main directory. In the main directory I have an index.php. I would like to copy this index.php into all 5000+ directories, but the only way I know how is doing it manually. Is there a way through the command line that I can enter something like cp and make it work from the directory? I'd copy it all the way down through all the directories and there sub directories within this main directory I am starting out in.

  Hi, do you know if there is a simple way to run FOR command in batch file on multiple threads? What's the point of having 4 cores if I can't run my tasks in 4 parallel threads? For example, if I am optimizing PNGs with PNGOUT, the command I would use is for %i in (*.png) do pngout "%i" But this is highly paralellizable task in which the sub-tasks do not depend on each other at all. To run this in 4 'queues' I'd write something like for -thread 4 %i in (*.png) do pngout "%i" Do I need to write my own for-like app that would be able to do this or is there available free solution?

• Problems when loop over a series of ssh-ed commands

  I have a series of server machines which I want to run the same command on. Each command takes hours and (even though I am running the commands using nohup and setting them to run in the background) I have to wait for each to finish before the next starts. Here is roughly how I have set it up: On the host machines: for i in {1..9}; do ssh RemoteMachine${i} ./RunJobs.sh; done Where RunJobs.sh on each remote machine is: source ~/.bash_profile cd AriadneMatching for file in FileDirectory/Input_*; do nohup ./Executable ${file} & done exit Does anyone know of a way such that I dont have to wait for each job to finish before the next starts? Or alternatively a better way of doing this, I have a feeling what I am do is fairly sub-optimal. Cheers, Jack

• How can I pipe two Perl CORE::system commands in a cross-platform way?

  I'm writing a System::Wrapper module to abstract away from CORE::system and the qx operator. I have a serial method that attempts to connect command1's output to command2's input. I've made some progress using named pipes, but POSIX::mkfifo is not cross-platform. My specific questions: Is there an alternative to POSIX::mkfifo that is cross-platform? Win32 named pipes don't work, as you can't open those as regular files, neither do sockets, for the same reasons. 2. The above doesn't quite work; the two threads get spawned correctly, but nothing flows across the pipe. I suppose that might have something to do with pipe deadlocking or output buffering. What throws me off is that when I run those two commands in the actual shell, everything works as expected. Point 2 is solved; a -p fifo file test was not testing the correct file.

  I've recently found a referrer in the apache log on my site. Now, I opened it out of curiosity, since my site is live, but I just started development so I didn't expect it. Anyway, the site was a pure copy of mine, and after investigation I saw that it resolves to my IP. I'm on Ubuntu 12.04, Apache 2, drupal 7, don't know what other info can I provide. My question is: how can I tell apache that it should not serve this site? Thanks Edit: forgot to say that I had some bots register to my fresh drupal installation. Also, my domain is a tld, this fake domain is a third level (ie. sub.domain.de)

  We want to mimic the behavior of a system-wide 002 umask on a certain directory foo, in order to ensure the following result: All sub-directories created underneath foo will have 775 permissions All files created underneath foo and subdirectories will have 664 permissions 1 and 2 will happen for files/dirs created by all users, including root, and all daemons. Assuming that ACL is enabled on our partition, this is the command we've come up with: setfacl -R -d -m mask:002 foo This seems to be working- I'm basically just looking for confirmation. Is this the most effective way to apply a per-directory umask with an ACL?

  I have a folder named "C:\Jobs\job#1" , "C:\Jobs\job#2" "C:\Jobs\job#3" etc and a lot of directories and sub-directories under it. I want to get the all the directories under Jobs and xcopy them to C:\backup. Then I want to xcopy all the files under each Job#1, 2 ,3 etc. to C:\backup\job#1\month\\*.* To make it clearer. Source dir = C:\Jobs\job#1\"myfiles&dir" Destination dir = C:\Backup\job#1\month\"myfiles&dir" then do the next folder Source dir = C:\Jobs\job#2\"myfiles&dir" Destination dir = C:\Backup\job#2\month\"myfiles&dir" ...until all folders are back-up. Since the job folder keep increasing, by doing it this way I don't have to add extra code on this script except modify the month. Thank you.

• How can I trace NTFS and Share Permissions to see why I can (or can't) write a file

  I'm trying to track down WHY I can write in a folder that, by my best estimation, I should not be able to write. The folder is shared with "Everyone" has "Full Control", with the files being more restrictive. My best guess is there's some sort of sub-group membership that's allowing me to write, but the nesting of groups that exists in our Active Directory is pretty extensive. Is there a tool, that will tell me which of the ACL entries allowed or disallowed my writing a file in a folder? The Effective Permissions dialog is marginally helpful, but what I need is something like a "NTFS ACL Trace Tool", if such a thing exists.

• nginx: URL rewrites and performance

  I have a website where I need to change the URL structure. The old URLs look like /olddir/part1_de.htm, the new ones will look like /newdir/sub/category/anotherpage.htm. There are a lot of URL rewrites I need to do, I assume about 500 distinct rewrites in the end. As my website gets quite a lot of traffic, my main concern is about performance at the moment. My questions are: I assume that for each request, the rewrites block will be parsed and the regex will be evaluated. Am I right? Will there be a performance penalty if I use these rewrites? Can nginx handle this? Are there any "best practices" to follow when doing a lot of rewrites?

  I want to grant users access to the nagios 3 core frontend by using an active directory group ("NagiosWebfrontend" in the code below). I got the hint, that I am missing a contact in nagios configuration which is equal to my login, but creating one with the same name as the domain user had no effect on this issue. However, it would be great to find a solution without manually editing nagios.conf for every new user, so the admins could grant access to nagios by just putting the user to "NagiosWebfrontend" group. What would be the best way to solve it?

  Does anyone know if it's possible to control the font size on videos played in the built-in iPhone video player? The subtitles (or "Closed Captions") that are there by default are rather small.
