• recursion tree and binary tree cost calculation

  Hi all, I've got the following recursion: T(n) = T(n/3) + T(2n/3) + O(n) The height of the tree would be log3/2 of 2. Now the recursion tree for this recurrence is not a complete binary tree. It has missing nodes lower down. This makes sense to me, however I don't understand how the following small omega notation relates to the cost of all leaves in the tree. "... the total cost of all leaves would then be Theta (n^log3/2 of 2) which, since log3/2 of 2 is a constant strictly greater then 1, is small omega(n lg n)." Can someone please help me understand how the Theta(n^log3/2 of 2) becomes small omega(n lg n)?

• How to make a table, which is wider than screen size, scrollable?

  I've a table with 2 columns and each column is 800px wide. I want to show this table in 800x50 window. So there should be horizontal and vertical scrollbar to view complete table. While I've found few related solutions (this and this) on SO, they only work if table width is smaller than screen size. In my case screen size is 1200px and total table width is 1600px. How could I do this? i want to achieve something like this.

  Hey Guys I am doing project on java. In one of the class, I am working on jtable. Now what i am doing is, In the table data will be loaded from the database. Now i want to change some value at some exact row and column. so for that i am using jtable's setValue function. which is like this.... grayCardTbl.setValueAt(Float.valueOf(String.valueOf(pdiff)),1,4); I have checked the "pdiff" variable, it is perfect. i had total 5 columns and 10 rows. So now problem with rowindex and column index. and after this i have also refresh the table. but still it is not reflecting on table.

  Hi to all, first i would like to say i am Newbie in C++. As part of my master thesis i am writing a program in C++ which also get as parameters the variables m and d (both integers). Were d is the power of 2 (this means 2^d elements). Parameter m define the number of possible interactions between one element and the total group (2^d elements). The number of possible interactions is computed as following: \kappa = \sum_{i=0}^m\binom{d}{i} (at present i generate vector of vectors for 2^d x \kappa, but my Prof. would like me to create different statistics to different m's. My first though was to to generate a dynamic array of m arrays of different sizes... Then i though of defining a 3-dim array with the biggest needed 2d array, but also program speed is important (e.g d = 20). i would like to ask for your advice how to define such kind of dynamic array that will also be fast. • Code coordinates to match compass bearings

  Right now in Matlab (0,0) is the origin, 0 degrees / 2pi would be to the right of the cartesian plane and angles are measured counter clockwise with 90 degrees being at the top. I'm trying to write a simulator where the coordinates would match a compass bearing. 0/360 degrees or 2pi would be at the top and 90 degrees would be on the right. Any idea how to code in Matlab or c++? I'd imaging it'd be a matrix flipped about the x axis and rotated 90 degrees but I'm at a total loss. Phil

  I've been suffering from a lot of elbow and forearm pain lately, and apparently it's caused by my arms and elbows constantly pressing against the desk. My doctor says I'm damaging the nerves on my elbow, and if I don't use elbow pads (or spend less time with the computer), it will get worse, and I will be risking permanent damage to the nerves. Since spending less time with the computer was not really an option, I purchased a pair of these: They didn't arrive yet, and I know they will probably make me look like a total idiot (my girlfriend has already started making jokes) when they do, but health comes first. Anyway, my question is: do you use any protective gear while programming? If yes, what do you use? Thanks,

  I have the following (simplified) models: class Donation(models.Model): entry_date = models.DateTimeField() class Category(models.Model): name = models.CharField() class Item(models.Model): donation = models.ForeignKey(Donation) category = models.ForeignKey(Category) I'm trying to display the total number of items, per category, grouped by the donation year. I've tried this: Donation.objects.extra(select={'year': "django_date_trunc('year', %s.entry_date)" % Donation._meta.db_table}).values('year', 'item__category__name').annotate(items=Sum('item__quantity')) But I get a Field Error on item__category__name. I've also tried: Item.objects.extra(select={"year": "django_date_trunc('year', entry_date)"}, tables=["donations_donation"]).values("year", "category__name").annotate(items=Sum("quantity")).order_by() Which generally gets me what I want, but the item quantity count is multiplied by the number of donation records. Any ideas? Basically I want to display this: 2010 - Category 1: 10 items - Category 2: 17 items 2009 - Category 1: 5 items - Category 3: 8 items

• MySQL: Storage of multiple text fields for a record

  An inexperienced question: I need to store about 10 unknown-length text fields per record into a MySQL table. I expect no more than 50K rows in total for this table but speed is important. The database actions will be solely SELECTs for all practical purposes. I'm using InnoDB. In other words: id | text1 | text2 | text3 | .... | text10 As I understand that MySQL will store the text elsewhere and use its own indicators on the table itself, I'm wondering whether there's any fundamental performance implications that I should be worrying about given the way the data is stored? (i.e. several "sub-fetches" from the table). Thank you.

  I cant even come up with a proper subject for this one... Basically I have a box div, that when click expands to a rectangle and shows content in the new expanded area. The problem I'm having is that when I animate out the div's width, the browser wants to render the content as the box is stretching, rather than just have it placed where I need it.   I have a number of threads that are performing a long runing task. These threads themselves have child threads that do further subdivisions of work. What is the best way for me to track the following: How many total threads my process has created What the state of each thread currently is What part of my process each thread has currently got to I want to do it in as efficient a way as possible and once threads finish, I don't want any references to them hanging around becasuse I need to be freeing up memory as early as possible. • Unique keys for Sphinx along three vectors instead of two

  I'm trying to implement thinking-sphinx across multiple 'sites' hosted under a single rails application. I'm working with the developer of thinking-sphinx to sort through the finer details and am making good progress, but I need help with a maths problem: Usually the formula for making a unique ID in a thinking-sphinx search index is to take the id, multiply it by the total number of models that are searchable, and add the number of the currently indexed model: id * total_models + current_model This works well, but now I also through an entity_id into the mix, so there are three vextors for making this ID unique. Could someone help me figure out the equation to gaurantee that the id's will never collide using these three variables: id, total_models, total_entities The entity ID is an integer. I thought of: id * (total_models + total_entities) + (current_model + current_entity) but that results in collisions. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

  I am attempting to write a Genetic Algorithm based on techniques I had picked up from the book "AI Techniques for Game Programmers" that uses a binary encoding and fitness proportionate selection (also known as roulette wheel selection) on the genes of the population that are randomly generated within the program in a two-dimensional array. I recently came across a piece of pseudocode and have tried to implement it, but have come across some problems with the specifics of what I need to be doing. I've checked a number of books and some open-source code and am still struggling to progress. I understand that I have to get the sum of the total fitness of the population, pick a random number between the sum and zero, then if the number is greater than the parents to overwrite it, but I am struggling with the implementation of these ideas. Any help in the implementation of these ideas would be very much appreciated as my Java is rusty.

• Django: Determining if a user has voted or not

  I have a long list of links that I spit out using the below code, total votes, submitted by, the usual stuff but I am not 100% on how to determine if the currently logged in user has voted on a link or not. I know how to do this from within my view but do I need to alter my below view code or can I make use of the way templates work to determine it? I have read http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1528583/django-vote-up-down-method but I don't quite understand what's going on ( and don't need any ofjavascriptery). • How to add a Page to Frame using code in WPF

  I have a Window where I have put a Frame. I would like to add a Page to the Frame when I click a button that is also on the Window but not in the Frame. There are several buttons in the Window and each click on a button should load a different Page in the Frame. Since I'm a total newbie on this WPF stuff it's quite possible that this approach is not the best and I have thought about replacing the Frame with a Canvas and then make UserControls instead of Pages that will be added to the Canvas. I welcome any ideas and suggestions on how to best solve this. I aiming for a functionality that is similar to the application Billy Hollis demonstrated in dnrtv episode 115.   Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!)   can someone show a description of the information of what a pgp looks like if only the descriptions were there but not the actual information? something like (i dont remember if the values are correct): packet-type[4 bits], total length in bytes[16 bits], packet version type [4 bits], creation-time[32 bits], encryption-algorithm[8 bits], ...,etc,etc ive tried to understand rfc4880, but its tedious and confusing. so far, i am think i have extracted the 4 i wrote above, but i cant seem to get the rest of the information out. can anyone help? i know i can just find some pgp program, but the whole point of this is to allow me to learn how those programs work in the first place

• Can this MySQL subquery be optimised?

  I have two tables, news and news_views. Every time an article is viewed, the news id, IP address and date is recorded in news_views. I'm using a query with a subquery to fetch the most viewed titles from news, by getting the total count of views in the last 24 hours for each one. It works fine except that it takes between 5-10 seconds to run, presumably because there's hundreds of thousands of rows in news_views and it has to go through the entire table before it can finish. The query is as follows, is there any way at all it can be improved? • mySQL Left Join on multiple tables

  Hi I'm really struggling with this query. I have 4 tables (http://oberto.co.nz/db-sql.png): Invoice_Payement, Invoice, Client and Calendar. I'm trying to create a report by summing up the 'paid_amount' col, in Invoice_Payment, by month/year. The query needs to include all months, even those with no data There query needs the condition (Invoice table): registered_id = [id] I have tried with the below query, which works, but falls short when 'paid_date' does not have any records for a month. The outcome is that month does not show in the results I added a Calendar table to resolved this but not sure how to left join to it.
