• Forum that integrates into CMS and has curated category pages with tagged threads

  I'm looking for a forum that meets these requirements: Login using Facebook/Twitter/OpenID etc. User profiles with reward system Voting/thumbs up function Categories and tags for sorting threads Custom category pages with moderated static header Embeddable threads and categories (For example, a whole category or single thread can be integrated into wordpress) API to users, discussions etc. I've looked at forums like Vanilla, Disqus, OSQA etc, but none seem to match the above "hybrid criteria". Hosted or self-hosted doesn't matter but I'm really looking for something that can be integrated into an existing CMS to replace comments while at the same time have curated category pages and user profiles. • Evoluent Vertical Mouse - Re-mapping Buttons?

  I have the Evoluent Vertical Mouse at work and at home. One is wired, the other wireless. Ubuntu maps their buttons differently and it makes me crazy when I switch locations. I use 12.10, but same has applied to every Ubuntu version since 9.10. The wired mouse is as desired: top finger button is left-click, scroll wheel is middle click and scroll, middle finger button is a right-click. On the wireless version, bottom finger button is mapped to right-click and the middle finger button is center-click. I tried tinkering with these instructions, but wound up unable to boot to GUI... had to delete the .conf file to recover: http://denishaine.wordpress.com/2011/12/01/evoluent-mouse-with-ubuntu-11-04-and-11-10/ Help?

• Is avoiding the private access specifier in PHP justified?

  I come from a Java background and I have been working with PHP for almost a year now. I have worked with WordPress, Zend and currently I'm using CakePHP. I was going through Cake's lib and I couldn't help notice that Cake goes a long way avoiding the "private" access specifier. Cake says Try to avoid private methods or variables, though, in favor of protected ones. The latter can be accessed or modified by subclasses, whereas private ones prevent extension or re-use. in this tutorial. Why does Cake overly shun the "private" access specifier while good OO design encourages its use i.e to apply the most restrictive visibility for a class member that is not intended to be part of its exported API? I'm willing to believe that "private" functions are difficult test, but is rest of the convention justified outside Cake? or perhaps it's just a Cake convention of OO design geared towards extensibility at the expense of being a stickler for stringent (or traditional?) OO design?

• How do I dig myself out of this DEEP hole? [closed]

  I may be a bit bias in the way i word this but any opinions and suggestions are welcome. I should start by saying i have a MSc in CS and a degree in new media +6 years expereince and im probably around a middleweight developer. I started a web development company with my friend from uni a year ago, there was a 4 month gap in the middle where i went miles away work on a big project. Ive since returned and picked up where we left off. A year on though i find im still staying up til 5am and getting up at 9 sometimes 2-3 days without sleep. While i was away i was working 9-5 and struggling to keep up with doing stuff for my clients 8 hours ahead, after work, so things stagnated. We currently have about 12 active projects, with one other part time developer and a full time freelancer who is dealing with one of our major projects. I am solely responsible for concurrently developing 2 big sites similar to gumtree in functionality, at the same time as about 5-6+ small WordPress based 5-10page sites. a lot of the content isnt in yet or the client is delaying so i chop and change project every other day which does my head in. Is it reasonable to expect myself to remember the intricate details of each project when i come back to it a week later? and remember the details of a task which hasnt been written down? my business partner seems to think so. or am i just forgetful? Im particularly bad at estimating timescales which doesnt help, added to that a lot of the technologies im am using are new to me (a magento site took weeks to theme rather than days and was full of bugs, even after 1000's of google searches and hours reading forums) im still trying to learn and find the best CMS for us to use and getting my head around the likes of Bootstrap and jquery, Cpanel / Linux (we just got a blank vps for me to set up with no experience) even installing an SSL certificate caused everyone's mail clients to go down which was more stress for me to sort out. I find the pressure of the workload and timescales and trying to learn this stuff so fast is beginning to turn me against my career path. The fact that i never seem to get anything done really winds up my business partner and iv come to associate him with the stress and pain of the whole situation especially when I get berated or a look that says "oh you retard" when I forget something. Even today i spent hours learning how a particular themeforest theme worked with wordpress and how i could twist it to work for our partiuclar needs, on the surface had done no work, that triggered a 30 minute tirade of anger and stress and questioning what i had done from my business partner. had i taken too long to work on that? shoudl i have done it in 2 hours instead of 6? i told him i would take 2 hours. i was wrong. I feel like im running myself into the ground. My sleeping pattern has got so bad that when im working im half asleep and making mistakes, my eyes are constantly purple underneath, i literally fall asleep at my desk, its affecting my social life too, ive not slept more than lightly for the last year and grind through impossible code puzzles in my half sleep wich keeps me awake, when im already exhausted. plus the work is rushed and buggy when it does get done so drags on into the next project. I also procrastinate quite badly, pacing the livingroom, looking out the window when Im alone for three days straight in the flat and start to get cabin fever which means i do even less work and the negative feedback loop continues. I get told im the only one with the problem when i say that i cant work from home any more, and examples of other freelancers get brought up. an office wouldnt bring any extra cash in to the company but im convinced having that moving more than 2 meters away from my bed to go to "work" would get me working, at the moment i feel guilty like i should be working 24-7. It is important that we do all this work to raise enough cash to get our business to the next level but every month still feels like a struggle to pay the rent (there is about £20K coming in by Jan) and i have to borrow money from friends often to buy food or get a taxi to a meeting, so it is vital the money keeps coming in. (im also 20 mins late for nearly all meetings but thats a different issue) have you experienced anything similar? how can i deal with the issues ive raised? is it realistic to develop 10 sites at once? how can i improve my relationship with my business partner? do you struggle to work at home? how do you deal with that? i think if i dont get my life on track by feb i will seriously consider giving it all up, but that seems like such a waste. any ideas!!? i need help! I've recently put a fairly complex "filter" into place which searches my content for mentions of fish species profiles and turns them into an active link. As such, I'm using /?p=1703 or whatever the ID is. What I'd like to know is: how much will this affect my SEO rating/ranking? Will it be detrimental if I don't rewrite the function?   I'm wondering if there will be any SEO/readability/memorability benefit to using this kind of URL structure for my upcoming project: www.moviereviews.com/movie/name? Considering that /movie is not a real directory. So that page doesn't exist. Something similar to wordpress /category/ base that is used purely for content separation on the site. What do you think? For user it will be beneficial, if domain doesn't signal what content is about my extra dir will tell what it is about. Correct? But from SEO perspective?

• seo value of duplicating content externally

  I run a website that includes a blog which was hand-coded by myself and is hosted on the same domain. My partner in this endeavour thinks it would be a good idea to open up a blogger/wordpress blog and duplicate the on-site blog on this off-site blog. AFAIK the main reason for doing this is the SEO benefits of the inbound links that this off-site blog will create. I think this is a bad idea, because: Effectively what we're doing is creating a (very small scale) link farm We're more likely to be punished than rewarded (in SEO terms) for duplicating our content across domains This introduces a problem of synchronising our content across domains. For example, if a blog post is edited on the on-site blog, then ideally the off-site blog should be similarly updated. I know very little about SEO, so would be interested to hear what more informed readers have to say.

• Why google isn't updating my site title in search results? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Google doesn't seem to update the description or title of my homepage I had my domain for few days before I uploaded site to it, and it had one title, and then when I uploaded content it should get new title, but with my misunderstanding of WordPress it had blocked robots.txt and keyword with no-index and no-follow. But I removed that like 7 days ago, and I see in reports that Google bot is crawling over my site, but my site title isn't updating, it still has old domain title when site wasn't there... My robots.txt has now: User-agent: * Allow: / I have clear title tag on every page. How long does it take to update? Do I need to check something else?

• Is the use of hashbang really a good idea? [on hold]

  I've been working on a WordPress site lately that was design with hashbang or shebang in the dynamically generated URLs. After doing some research, I noticed that there was some preference by Google in their use and how it crawled the site. However, after I ran several sitemap generators and Screaming Frog SEO Spider, I realized that the only page being crawled was the index page. So now I am questioning the use of hashbangs. What do you think? Should I attempt to remove them? Or will it even matter? And does anyone know of a easy way to remove this? The site is www.modernvintage1005.com

• Getting a lot of '/_' errors from webmaster tools

  I'm using a WordPress site and I thought I got all the kinks out of it. For some reason Webmaster Tools is crawling my website and showing a lot of 404 errors which are from /_ like additional pages that I've never created. I just can't figure out what is creating these for Google crawlers and then displaying a 404. My robots.txt is here. My sitemap (created by the Yoast plugin) is here. Often I'll try to use an existing solution such as Wordpress or Drupal. • Are the contents in the front page considered as duplicate of the post?

In Wordpress blogs, the front page of the blog will display many posts in whole or excerpts. When the link to the post is clicked, the content will be opened with an other template file(single.php). Can we say that the content displayed in the front page and the post pages are considered as duplicate? Does it harm SEO in any way?

• How do I get the root index page to redirect to a subdirectory without affecting SEO?

  I am reviving/reorganising my personal WordPress blog. It's using a URL that looks like this: http://mydomain.com/blog The webserver 301 redirects www.mydomain.com to mydomain.com. I want to use the blog subdirectory because I plan to add other parts to the site, with the blog only being one part of the site. However, at the moment there is nothing there but the blog, so I want to have the root index page redirect to the blog for the time being. I have been using this on the root index.html page to do the redirect... <meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="0;url=./blog"></HEAD> ...but this seemed to have stopped the site being indexed by Google and Bing. How do I do this without affecting SEO? Also, what URL should I put in the sitemap.xml?

• Will I get penalised by google for overflow hidden? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How bad is it to use display: none in CSS? 5 answers I have 2 divs next to each other, div A and div B. Div A displays a whole wordpress post and div B displays about 15 excerpts of posts with the same tag. To get this looking nice I set the hight of div B to be the same as the hight of div A with javaScript. This means alot of post excerpts will be hidden due to overflow hidden on div B. Will Google penalise me for this, and if so, how can I make this work and still please Google? Ps. I would gladly prevent the excerpts from being indexed but the main post must be indexed Ds.

• Can I redirect the HTTP request towards an old folder to the homepage using .htaccess file?

  I have to following situation: I had an old blog that was made using Joomla (this blog was indexed well enough by search engines). For some problems I delete it and I have create it again using WordPress. Now I have many visit (from Google) that leading to specific pages of the old site (pages that don't exist in the new version). For example I have visit to URL as: /scorejava/index.php/corso-spring-mvc/1-test that don't exist on my new site. I would know if using the .htaccess file (or other sistem) I can redirect the HTTP request directed to some subfolder (that don't exist in the new version) to the homepage of my new site. For example I have the request towards the void URL: /scorejava/index.php/corso-spring-mvc/1-test. And I would create a regular expression that say something like: all the request toward the subfolder corso-spring-mvc (and all it's content file and subfolder) have to be redirected to www.scorejava.com. Is it possible?

I want to develop it for a children's hospital run by my father. The hospital is small with two doctors. Currently, everything is done manually on paper. The main entities who will be using the system are: Receptionist, the two doctors, chemist and the medical laboratorist. They will use it majorly for keeping the records of the patient. The patients would not be interacting with the system directly. The system needs to be user friendly and should be easy to learn. I was thinking to develop such a system using a CMS or an ERP or any other free tool. I have used wordpress/drupal in past but never used an ERP.   I'm trying to add a news carousel on my OneHub site. I know there are quite a few plugins that I can use, but I'm looking for a ready-to-use hosted solution where people can log-on and manage the content, and I can simply include as an iFrame widget on our OneHub site. We would prefer to use Expression Engine, since we're using this on some of our other websites. It looks like Expression Engine + JQuery Cycle Rotator might be an option, not sure how easily I can get this onto OneHub though... WordPress has a carousel plugin as well that I'll explore. Anyhow, while I'm trying out these options, I figured I would put a question out there for any thoughts or advice, other solutions, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Alan

There were a couple of warnings at "sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic fglrx-legacy" with update-alternatives. But, at the last step I got "aticonfig: No supported adapters detected". Unity does not start anymore. I only can login to Gnome. How can I get back to a working system?

• Crossbrowser issue - navigation-menu [closed]

  I'm having issues with crossbrowser compatibility on my navigationmenu for my site. The issue is that it's not working as expected in MSIE. It bugs out on mouseover. The site is run with wordpress and the theme is called GreenChilli. It's a free theme from MyThemeShop and they don't seam to be very active in resolving free theme issues on their forum. • juju: How do I list all the relation variables and debug them interactively?

  I'm writing a charm that requires a mysql database, I found from looking at other charms that this (below) is how I get the info about the database: user=`relation-get user` password=`relation-get password` mysqlhost=`relation-get private-address` But I just found that from reading the wordpress charm example, is there a way to show all the relation variables that I can use? Also, while debugging my db-relation-changed script, I wanted to ssh into my host and interactively run those commands, for example relation-get user, but it didn't work. I resorted to having to restart everything and use juju log to print them out. This wasted a lot of time. Is there a way to print out these relations, either from my dev box or from the instance running my charm? • Has anyone used Genetify for A/B testing

  I'm working on a small project that will likely run on Wordpress, I always like to run some split testing to improve conversion rates for various goals. Typically if its a small site that I either don't have a budget for or want to keep it as inexpensive as possible I use Google Website Optimizer if I do have a budget I go with Visual Website Optimizer both are great and affordable, but for fun I was checking out alternatives and found Genetify which is an open source project and has some neat features. In searching around I don't see many people talking about it and wondered if anyone here has used it. If so what do you think about it?
