  • How should game objects with fixed positions in the world be positioned?

    I have some game objects that are always at the same position in my game world as they make up some of the scenery of my puzzle game. At the moment, their positions are sort of hard coded in and some of their positions are calculated relative to the hard coded positions of other objects at the time of game initialization. This has been hard to maintain because whenever I've decided to change the position of these scenery objects as the game design evolved, I have to go and rewrite parts of the code that place the created objects and calculate their positions in the world. Is there a more maintainable way of handling the positioning of fixed game objects?

  • Game Database Connectivity Java

    I'm developing a simple multi-player puzzle game in Java. Both players should be able to view the same game board on his own computer. Then, when one player makes an action in the game (ex. drags an object onto a coordinate space), the game's view should update automatically on the other computer's game screen. I'd like all this to happen over the internet, not requiring both computers to be on the same LAN connection. If I need to use SQL/PHP to accomplish this, I'm unsure how to design the database to accomplish something as simple as the following: Player A drags element onscreen Game sends coordinates of element to database/server Player B's computer detects a change to an item in the database Player B's computer grabs the coordinates of Player A's item Player B's machine draws onscreen elements at the received coordinates Could somebody point me in the right direction?

I need a Java function that reads a file with a content like this (attached) and returns it in XML. For a reference, in site http://pear.php.net/package/Var_Dump/ you can find the code (in PHP) that generates dumps in XML, so all neeeded logic is there (I think).   • Android ndk-build command does nothing

    I have a similar question to that posted here: Android NDK: why ndk-build doesn't generate .so file and a new libs folder in Eclipse? ...though I am running Windows 7, not Mac os. Essentially the ndk-build command is run, gives no error but doesn't create an .so file (also, since I'm on windows this should create a .dll and not an .so?). I tried running the command from the root, jni, src folders etc. but got the same result; cmd just returns to the prompter after a few seconds. I ran it again from the jni folder with NDK_LOG=1 parameter to see what was happening. Here is a portion of the transcript of the log results after running ndk-build in the jni folder (after it successfully identified the platform, etc.)... In the end my problem is adding the "tempProduct" object to the mutable array dataArray so that I can customize the table cells. Using the json framework im parsing out some json which returns an array of NSDictionary objects. Stepping through that my dictionary objects look good, I populate my custom object with properties for all my fields which goes through fine, and the values look right. However I cant add this to the array, I've tried several different implementations doesn't work. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. In some instances doing a po tempProduct prints the description and sometimes it does not. same with right clicking on the variable and choosing print description.   • jQuery AJAX Character Encoding Problem

    Hi everyone, I'm currently coding a French website. There's a schedule page, where a link on the side can be used to load another day's schedule. http://aquate.us/film/horaire.html (At the moment, only the links for November 13th and November 14th work) Here's the JS I'm using to do this: <script type="text/javascript"> function load(y) { $.get(y,function(d) { $("#replace").html(d); mod(); }); } function mod() { $("#dates a").click(function() { y = $(this).attr("href"); load(y); return false; }); } mod(); </script> The actual AJAX works like a charm. My problem lies with the response to the request. Because it is a French website, there are many accented letters. I'm using the ISO-8859-15 charset for that very reason. However, in the response to my AJAX request, the accents are becoming ?'s because the character encoding seems to be changed back to UTF-8. How do I avoid this? I've already tried adding some PHP at the top of the requested documents to set the character set: <?php header('Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-15'); ?> But that doesn't seem to work either. Any thoughts? Also, while any of you are looking here...why does the rightmost column seem to become smaller when a new page is loaded, causing the table to distort and each <li> within the <td> to wrap to the next line?     Hi everyone. I'm developing some ajax script and using wordpress and my question is: is there a way to extract a comment url from a wordpress function somehow?   • Event 4098, 0x80070533 Logon failure: account currently disabled?

    Having started to upgrade our PCs to Windows 7 we have noticed that we are getting group policy warnings in Event Viewer such as: "The user 'Word.qat' preference item in the 'a_Office2007_Users {A084A37B-6D4C-41C0-8AF7-B891B87FC53B}' Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070533 Logon failure: account currently disabled.' This error was suppressed." 15 of these warnings appear every two hours on every Windows 7 PC, most of which are to do with core office applications and two are for plug-ins to out document management system. These warnings aren't afecting the users, but it would be nice to track down the source of them before we rollout Win7 to the rest of the Organisation. Any ideas as to where the login issue could be comming from (All users are connecting to the domain and proxy, etc fine)?

The machine was set up by the client's sysadmin, who left on bad terms. My client no longer employs a sysadmin.     I have a Linux host and couple of routerboadrs. I created a GRE tunnel, but Linux does not answer keepalive packages. Then router mark gre connection as unreachable, so I cant send to Linux host from router subnet. If linux sends something into tunnel (ping, etc.) - RouterOS mark connection as reacheble. Second and next packages routed nicely until one minute idle (no traffic).     We have a Poweredge R210 running WS2K8R2. The server has two Broadcom 5716C NICs running Broadcom BASP. I can team the NICs using the 802.3ad protocol on the server end no problem. I have no VLAN. Now I go to the 2824 switch (default settings all round) running in managed mode and create a LAG with ports g1 and g2. As soon as I add these ports, I lose the ability to send traffic to or from the server. I am much more of a server guy than a networking guy, what am I doing wrong here? Server Static IP Address: 10.10.61.15 Network mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 10.10.61.51 The 2824 switch has an IP address of 10.10.61.51 and in turn has its gateway as our firewall server running ISA Server at 10.10.61.50.

    There is a problem that is driving me crazy. After the day I tried to fix the CPU usage problem of my VPS, the CPU load has grown from 60% to 150%, and I have no idea what causes the problem. The wiki doesn't have much traffic, only around 4000 requests/day, mostly from Google and Bing bots. It had been using around 60% (of total 400% on the Linode) of the CPU before. I thought it was a bit high, so two day ago, I was trying to fix the problem (not knowing what was waiting for me). I did nothing but added a new empty line to wiki's configure file, which would change the modified time of the configure file, and then all the cached page files would be set invalidated. I had done that before, and that would cause high CPU usage, but normally it would take only hours to let things back to normal again. Not this time, my CPU usage has been around 150% for more than two days. It is php-fpm using most of CPU reassures. Using 100% of three cores is not rare. I hadn't seen that before. There are other sites on the Linode, but it should be the wiki. Because if I offline the wiki, CPU usage will drop back to around 40% soon. The day I also duplicated php-fpm.conf, and opened it, but didn't changed it. I have no idea what I did wrong. I here ask for help to save myself from being crazy!!! It is php-fpm. Is there a way to find out what is it doing?   • MacBook Pro - 7200 vs 5400 rpm drives - Heat and Noise

    I am looking at a new 15" MacBook Pro for development purposes. I am planning to run a Virtual Machine for about 50% of my work (Windows 7 x64, IIS, SQL Server, and VS 2010). The upgrade from a 5400 rpm drive to a 7200 rpm is only $45. From what I understand the faster rotational speed of the 7200 rpm drive will help virtual machine performance. However, I am concerned that additional heat and fan noise might be an issue. I will be running mostly on A/C power so decreased battery life is not a major concern for me. Since I would be running with a Core i7 processor which gives off a fair amount of heat already I was wondering if it might be best to stay at 5400 rpm for the hard drive. What do you all think?     Hi, I'm debugging an API I'm building using netcat to send raw HTTP requests. The thing is that Apache closes the connection after 10 seconds, giving me very little time to type. I know that I could pipe a file to nc, or use any other workaround, but I'd like it to work as it's supposed to. The Timeout directive in apache2.conf is at its default of 300 seconds, KeetAliveTimeout at 15 seconds. Where could this 10 second timeout possibly be defined? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop.   • IIS mystery: "Deadlock detected" periodically makes site unavailable

    A few times a day, our vb.net (IIS 6.0) website is randomly throwing the following error and becomes completely unavailable for 5-15 minutes at a time while the application is recycled: ISAPI 'c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll' reported itself as unhealthy for the following reason: 'Deadlock detected'. The website ran for months on the exact same server in beta without problem - but the problem started over the weekend when we made the site live. The live site is under some load but less than many of our other production websites. How should I attack this problem? I've looked into orphaning the worker process and creating a dump file - but I'm not sure how to analyze that. Any advice or information is appreciated. Thanks, Shane

  • Using pfSense, OpenVPN Connects but Still Can't See the Network

    I am having an OpenVPN issue. I have a pfSense box at home configured to allow traffic through a VPN tunnel. The client computer is Windows XP Home, behind a standard Comcast connection and a Netgear wireless router. I use OpenVPN to access my work network (from where I am trying to get out of in this post) from home (with an XP Pro machine behind pfSense), and this works fine. The client config is similar but has the changes specific to my setup... Here is my XP Home config: client dev tun proto tcp remote pfsense.*.org 1194 (starred out by me) resolv-retry infinite nobind persist-key persist-tun ca ca.crt cert client.crt key client.key ns-cert-type server comp-lzo verb 3 When I launch the OpenVPN GUI, the Tunnel TAP network connection turns red, and I can right-click that to connect to the server. Everything seems to work fine until I browse for the actual network. The Tunnel TAP connection turns green and it says connected to 10.1.1.6 (I have tried different IP pools here too with no luck). I can see the internal network fine, but my home network behind pfSense is not there. I have tried browsing there by using Tools Map Network Drive, using the browser, with no success. Currently the latest version is 6.5.1.15 and you can download the updater from Canon website. In fact the updater is just the full installer but it doesn't allow you to install if it doesn't find a previous install or the original CD. Note: In the past I used to save a registry file with registry keys used by it, loading it did allowed me to run the installer but now, with Windows 7 x64 it seams that it doesn't work anymore.

  • Buying replacement Macbook Pro Battery - Genuine vs. eBay

    I'm looking to replace my Macbook Pro's battery (15", last model before the Unibody). It's currently at 55% capacity (as reported in System Information and Battery Health Monitor). I've reset the SMC firmware, calibrated the battery, and it's just not lasting that long anymore. I've seen some genuine replacements that are "pulls" (pulled from used computers) that are rated at least 90% capacity (iFixit, MacSales). I've also seen a variety of batteries on eBay that look more like clones than genuine batteries, but are new. A new battery from Apple is $129, and when I brought my laptop in they ran the Battery test and said if I bought the battery right then they'd give me a discount (around $100). Anyone out there used one of these "OEM Compatible" batteries? Fit/finish good? (I don't want a funky color or a corner that sticks out.) Or, should I just suck it up and get the genuine replacement (for about twice the price)?
