  • Reverse rendering of Urdu fonts

    I am working on a project that is based on Urdu language in Ubuntu platform. I'm using Python language and have almost achieved my task. The problem is that, the Urdu text is rendered in reverse order. For example, consider the word ??? (which means work) consisting of the three letters: ? , ? , and ? The output is rendered in reverse order as ??? consisting of the three letters: ?, ?, and ? When copying this text to Open Office or opening the generated XML file in Firefox, the generated result is absolutely desired. How can this problem be solved?

  • A good tool for browser automation/client-side Web scripting

    I'm interested in adopting a tool/scripting language to automate some daily tasks connected with fighting forum spammers. A brief overview of these tasks: analyze new registrations and posts on a phpBB forum, and delete or deactivate spammers using a website/community that collects such spam reports. Typically such automation is integrated into the phpBB installation itself, which certainly has its advantages. My approach has the advantage of independent operation, etc. One way to think about this is in terms of browser automation. I've used iOpus iMacros for Firefox (the free version) in the past to respond to individual spammers, but current attacks are highly distributed. My "logic" for pigeonholing spammers vs. nonspammers seems beyond the easy reach of the free version of iMacros. From a more technical perspective one can think about dispensing with the browser altogether and programming GET/POST requests directed to my forum and other Web-based resources. I'm familiar with some scripting languages like Ruby and Lua, but I could be persuaded that a compiled application is better suited for these tasks. However in my experience the dynamic flexibility of interpreted environments is very useful in prototyping and debugging the application logic. So I'm leaning in the direction of scripting languages. Among browsers I favor Firefox and Chrome. I use both Windows and Linux platforms, and if the tool can adapt to an Android platform, it would make a neat demonstration of skills, yes?   • DSL modem problem in 11.10

    Earlier I used Windows 7 and the modem used to work absolutely fine. Even when it got disconnected it used to reconnect automatically without any trouble. But then I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on dual-boot and set up the modem connection properly but the modem now disconnects much more frequently (earlier it disconnected once in 5 hours or so and after Ubuntu in 5 minutes!). Also once disconnected, it does not reconnect even when I have checked the "Connect Automatically" button. I have to restart the system to reconnect it. I the clean installed Windows and modem works perfectly fine again. What is the reason for this and how can I solve this? I really want to use Ubuntu but due to this problem I can't.

  • Learning about security and finding exploits

    First things first: I have absolutely no interest in learning how to crack systems for personal enrichment, hurting other people or doing anything remotely malicious. I understand the basis of many exploits (XSS, SQL injection, use after free etc.), though I've never performed any myself. I even have some idea about how to guard web applications from common exploits (like the aforementioned XSS and SQL injection) Reading this question about the Internet Explorer zero-day vulnerability from the Security SE piqued my curiosity and made me wonder: how did someone even find out about this exploit? What tools did they use? How did they know what to look for? I'm wary about visiting hacker dens online for fear of getting my own system infected (the Defcon stories make me paranoid). So what's a good, safe place to start learning?

  • How do I make more available space on a Time Machine hard disk?

    I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard, and made some other changes that have caused my next Time Machine backup to be quite large. Previous to the upgrade my backup drive had filled up, so Time Machine was deleting old backups to make room for new ones. When Time Machine started the first backup after the upgrade, it displayed a message that it was freeing up space. But it wasn't able to free up enough: (The disk has 320 GB capacity.) How can I free up more space on the disk (without reformatting or deleting all the existing backups)? I don't want to recklessly delete files and take the risk of confusing Time Machine.

  • Web services, Java EE, Spring, DB integration project ideas - maybe data mining related?

    I am a graduate Computer Science student (Data Mining and Machine Learning) and have good exposure to core Java (3 years). I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, Java EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

  • What is a legal way to use music from registered authors in a game?

    I have recently asked a question about music in games like Guitar Hero. I have found that that in Europe (at least) if I do want to use a track composed by a musician member of a royalty collecting society I need to pay a flat fee to the society and not only to the member. So a "one-to-one" agreement is not valid and the society can come up to me and ask me for money for each download. Even if for FREE! This is a fee sheet list of the UK agency: for fee, see "Permanent download services" It is about 1,200 GBP for less than 22,000 copies and they DON'T specify anything more and they said me on the phone that I need to wait and see how many downloads I get before knowing the price. This is kind of crazy as If I give away the App for free I will have to PAY 1,200 GBP!! I am shocked and I feel very bad. One agency suggested me to use a fake name of the artist, but in this way is not fair to my collaborators as what they hope is that the App gets lots of downloads and in this way that other people will get to know about them and hopefully commission them more work. The other solution is to work only with non registered musicians. The question here to you is: Has anyone found a legal way to use music from registered authors in a game?

    I run thttpd to serve some perl files. But for some reason the daemon is exiting every second or third day. Strangely it's always at 6.25 am.   • Good PPA for ffmpeg

    Its annoying that the default ffmpeg in ubuntu's repositories is outdated and hobbled for legal reasons, however, there's a great page on the forums that walks you through building it from scratch: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095 (I also add in support for --enable-libdc1394 --enable-libgsm --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libspeex when I build, which is nice, but not essential.) Anyway, I'm getting set to setup a computer lab running ubuntu for a multimedia class I'm teaching, and I was wondering if there was PPA out there that did something similar to what is available when building from scratch. The things I absolutely need from it are up-to-date libxvid, libx264, libfaac, and libmp3lame support plus the un-encumbered stuff (vorbis, theora, vpx). Is there a PPA out there that provides something like this?

  • Issue with Mapping Textures to Models in Blender

    I've been trying to texture a model using Blender, but when I draw on the UV Editor it doesn't show up on the model, and I can't draw on the model itself. I've tried saving the image and the 3D View is set to Texture. Everything seems to be in order and I've followed several tutorials, but none of them seem to work with the version I'm using (2.64-- update was necessary for import plugin) and I'm absolutely stumped. How can I draw textures to the model? If not within Blender itself, how do I export/import the textures? EDIT: Vertex Paint works, though it is insufficient for my purposes. In addition, moving to the rendered view produces a solid-color model with none of the applied textures.

  • How to access an encrypted INI file from C on an embedded system with little RAM

    I want to encrypt an INI file using a Delphi program on a Windows PC. Then I need to decrypt & access it in C on an embedded system with little RAM. I will do that once & fetch all info; I will not be consutinuously accessing the INI file whenever my program needs data from the file. Any advice as to which encryption to use? Nothing too heavyweight, just good enough for "Security through obscurity" and FOSS for both Delphi & C. And how can I decrypt, get all the info from the INI file - using as little RAM as possible, and then free any allocated RAM? I hope that someone can help. [Update] I am currently using an Atmel UC3, although I am not sure if that will be the final case. It has 512kB falsh & 128kB RAM. For an INI file, I am talking of max 8 sections, with a total of max 256 entries, each max 8 chars. I chose INI (but am not married to it), because i have had major problems in the past when the format of a data fiel changes, no matter whether binary, or text. For tex, I prefer the free format of INI (on PC), but suppose I could switch to line_1=data_1, line_2=data_2 and accept that if I add new fields in future software erleases they must come at the end, even if it is not pretty when read directly by humans. I suppose if I choose a fixed format text file then I never need get more than one line into RAM at a time ...

  • Legal Web Fonts & Licensing

    So I'm a little confused in regards to legality of using fonts for web. Often from designers I get a PSD file and it uses a special font, and the font is supplied. However attempting to convert the font using: http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fontface/generator Ends up with a message saying it's blocked by Adobe. Not only that sometimes if the font can be converted, it often looks like crap when viewed in a browser. I assume that the generator is primarily for people to convert their own fonts, but if you purchase the use of a font then you can only use it for Web if the terms allows you to? The fonts used in PSD's are often Adobe Fonts, I can't find anything that suggests I can convert those and use them on the web. So I'm wondering if anyone knows the legal rights around using Photoshop supplied fonts on the web? In addition I'm wondering what resources are available (free/paid) that provide fonts that can be used on the web.   • Are there keylogger viruses that affect Ubuntu?

    I just within the last few hours had my Amazon and Gmail accounts hijacked. Purchases were made through my Amazon account that I didn't authorize...in fact, I wasn't even in my room. According to Gmail, the IP address of when I got hijacked was where I live. Enough rambling, here's my question: are there keylogger viruses on Ubuntu? I am not sure if either i accidentally let my password out there somewhere, or maybe I have a keylogger. I'm currently installing ClamAV to scan for viruses. Any help would be absolutely appreciated.

    I need a recovery software that has the features of reclaime file recovery. Those are, to be able to read image files, to keep folder structure, to be as efficient but to be free. I can't afford reclaime and all free software that i know out there either support folder structure but cannot read an image of the array created or the opposite. Can somebody suggest some software? PS: I used reclaime to create an image of my RAID0 broken array and with reclaime file recovery i can see all my files intact but i cannot recover without purchase.

  • Suitable SDK to develop quick game?

    I'm currently undertaking a personal project at home that I need to turn around inside the next few months (which working full time and still learning programming makes it a tad difficult). I'm looking for suggestions on SDK's or tools (preferably free or that come with games, similar to steam tools) that I can use to develop a "game". I'm OK with coding but have no 3D development skills at all. I've very little experience with mod tools or SDK's at all but I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of one that does the following: A decent library of prefab 3D models to build scenes. Ability to add scripting to the scene I've used Unity before and would prefer to continue to do so however I really have the worst 3D skills imaginable and can't waste time learning them. I'd be looking for pre-fab items that are both industrial and possibly more lush environments (trees etc). If it makes any difference (due to licencing and what-not) I WILL NOT be selling this game or marketing it in any way and I am a University Student if any places do educations licences. Another alternative would be to source free 3d models elsewhere but again while I'm still learning I have no idea where to look if someone could point me in the right direction I'll do the rest of the digging.     This is just in: HTC is said to be considering taking over Palm. That would be an interesting development, since HTC is one of the few parties we can trust not messing up webOS but actually using it as it’s supposed to work.Palm has an absolutely first-rate product in webOS, especially its user interface. As far as I’m concerned the Palm Pre is the only phone that’s (almost?) on a par with the iPhone when it comes to UI, although the system is completely different (and has supported multitasking...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
