  • nested join linq-to-sql queries

    - by ile
    var result = ( from contact in db.Contacts where contact.ContactID == id join referContactID in db.ContactRefferedBies on contact.ContactID equals referContactID.ContactID join referContactName in db.Contacts on contact.ContactID equals referContactID.ContactID orderby contact.ContactID descending select new ContactReferredByView { ContactReferredByID = referContactID.ContactReferredByID, ContactReferredByName = referContactName.FirstName + " " + referContactName.LastName }).Single(); Problem is in this line: join referContactName in db.Contacts on contact.ContactID equals referContactID.ContactID where referContactID.ContactID is called from the above join line. How to nest these two joins? Thanks in advance! Ile

  • Linq, should I join those two queries together?

    - by 5YrsLaterDBA
    I have a Logins table which records when user is login, logout or loginFailed and its timestamp. Now I want to get the list of loginFailed after last login and the loginFailed happened within 24 hrs. What I am doing now is get the last login timestamp first. then use second query to get the final list. do you think I should join those two queris together? why not? why yes? var lastLoginTime = (from inRecord in db.Logins where inRecord.Users.UserId == userId && inRecord.Action == "I" orderby inRecord.Timestamp descending select inRecord.Timestamp).Take(1); if (lastLoginTime.Count() == 1) { DateTime lastInTime = (DateTime)lastLoginTime.First(); DateTime since = DateTime.Now.AddHours(-24); String actionStr = "F"; var records = from record in db.Logins where record.Users.UserId == userId && record.Timestamp >= since && record.Action == actionStr && record.Timestamp > lastInTime orderby record.Timestamp select record; }

  • Which of these queries is preferable?

    - by bread
    I've written the same query as a subquery and a self-join. Is there any obvious argument for one over the other here? SUBQUERY: SELECT prod_id, prod_name FROM products WHERE vend_id = (SELECT vend_id FROM products WHERE prod_id = ‘DTNTR’); SELF-JOIN: SELECT p1.prod_id, p1.prod_name FROM products p1, products p2 WHERE p1.vend_id = p2.vend_id AND p2.prod_id = ‘DTNTR’;

  • How to create a user customizable database (like Zoho creator) in Rails?

    - by martjno
    I'm learning Rails, and the target of my experiments is to realize something similar to Zoho Creator, Flexlist or Mytaskhelper, i.e. an app where the user can create his own database schema and views. What's the best strategy to pursue this? I saw something about the Entity-Attribute-Value but I'm not sure whether it's the best strategy or if there is some support in Rails for it. If there was any tutorial in Rails about a similar project it would be great. Probably it's not the easiest star for learning a new language and framework, but it would be something I really plan to do since a long time.

  • Exposing entities via a nHibernate implementation RIA Services with querystring queries

    - by illdev
    I once read a blog post and cannot find it anymore. drat! It was about a guy who setup a wcf service (I guess RIA, but could have been something else) exposing the model via IQueryable to the querystring. Sou you could say http://host/articles/123/ratings and you'd get a list (soap or json) of serialized Rating entities (the properties which had some attribute attached) which pertained to an article with id 123. All this with nHibernate / nh linq in the back and in surprisingly few lines of code. Anyone knows what I am talking about? Experiences, suggestions?

  • Why does mobile first responsive design tend to not use max-width queries alongside the min-width queries?

    - by Sam
    First off, I understand the basic principles behind mobile first responsive web design, and totally agree with them. But one thing I don't understand: In my experience, not all styles for small screens can be used for the larger version of a website. For example, usually smaller versions tend to have larger clickable areas, hamburger navigation, etc. So I sometimes have to override these specific styles, aside from just progressively enhancing the base styles. So I was wondering: why is max-width rarely mentioned (or used) in the context of mobile-first responsive web design? Because it looks like it could be used to isolate styles for smaller screens that are not useful for larger screens, and would thus prevent unnecessary duplication of code. A quote which mentions min-width as typically mobile-first, but not max-width: Mobile first, from a coding perspective, means that your base style is typically a single-column, fully-fluid layout. You use @media (min-width: whatever) to add a grid-based layout on top of that. from: http://gomakethings.com/mobile-first-and-internet-explorer/ EDIT: So to be more specific: I was wondering if there is a reason to exclude max-width from a mobile-first responsive design (as it seems like it can be useful for writing your css as DRY as possible, as some styles for small screens will not be used for bigger screens).

  • Which would be better? Storing/access data in a local text file, or in a database?

    - by TerranRich
    Basically, I'm still working on a puzzle-related website (micro-site really), and I'm making a tool that lets you input a word pattern (e.g. "r??n") and get all the matching words (in this case: rain, rein, ruin, etc.). Should I store the words in local text files (such as words5.txt, which would have a return-delimited list of 5-letter words), or in a database (such as the table Words5, which would again store 5-letter words)? I'm looking at the problem in terms of data retrieval speeds and CPU server load. I could definitely try it both ways and record the times taken for several runs with both methods, but I'd rather hear it from people who might have had experience with this. Which method is generally better overall?

  • How much faster is a database running in RAM?

    - by orokusaki
    I"m looking to run PostgreSQL in RAM for performance enhancement. The database isn't more than 1GB and shouldn't ever grow to more than 5GB. Is it worth doing? Are there any benchmarks out there? Is it buggy? My second major concern is: How easy is it to back things up when it's running purely in RAM. Is this just like using RAM as tier 1 HD, or is it much more complicated?

  • Reduce the number of queries in EF

    - by Gio2k
    I have the following Model: Entities: Product (Contains basic data for products: price, etc) Attribute (Contains data for all possible optional attributes) ProductAttribute (Contains data for optional attributes of a product, eg. Color, Model, Size). ProductAttribute is essentially a many to many relationship with payload (ProductId, AttributeID, Value) And this piece of code: private static void ListAttributes(Product p) { p.ProductAttributes.Load(); foreach (var att in p.ProductAttributes) { att.Attribute.load(); Console.WriteLine("\tAttribute Name:{0} - Value {1}", att.Attribute.Name, att.AttributeValue); } } This piece of code will fire a query for each time the att.Attribute.Load() method is called in the foreach loop, only so i can get display the name of the attribute. I would like to fetch the Attribute.Name together with the query that fetches all attribute values, i.e. join ProductAttribute and Attribute. Is there any way to achieve this within my method?

  • How to separate database entries and display them as individual records using PHP?

    - by Clark
    I used to have database entries separated by ampersands (&), but this was causing certain search issues so I decided to encapsulate my entries on both sides by $ and & symbols like: $this& But I am having trouble displaying all the entries of a cell as individual records. Before I used: $unsplitItems = $row['files']; $files = explode("@", $unsplitItems); foreach ($files as $file) { if(strlen($file)) { echo "<li>$file</li>"; } } Any idea how I can split my records and display all the items in the array as individual entries?

  • How do I add values from two separate queries in SQL

    - by fishhead
    Below is my attempt at adding two values from separate select statements...it's not working, and I can't see why. I'm looking for some direction. select (v1.Value + v2.Value) as total from ( (Select Max(Value) as [Value] from History WHERE Datetime>='Apr 11 2010 6:05AM' and Datetime<='Apr 11 2010 6:05PM' and Tagname ='RWQ272017DTD' ) as v1 (Select Max(Value) as [Value] from History WHERE Datetime>='Apr 11 2010 6:05AM' and Datetime<='Apr 11 2010 6:05PM' and Tagname ='RU282001DTD' ) as v2 ) EDIT: Boy do I feel foolish...I asked the same question a few days ago...now I can't delete this.

  • Combining two queries on same table

    - by user1830856
    I've looked through several previous questions but I am struggling to apply the solutions to my specific example. I am having trouble combining query 1 and query 2. My query originally returned (amongst other details) the values "SpentTotal" and "UnderSpent" for all members/users for the current month. My issue has been adding two additional columns to this original quert that will return JUST these two columns (Spent and Overspent) but for the previous months data Original Query #1: set @BPlanKey = '##CURRENTMONTH##' EXECUTE @RC = Minimum_UpdateForPeriod @BPlanKey SELECT cm.clubaccountnumber, bp.Description , msh.PeriodMinObligation, msh.SpentTotal, msh.UnderSpent, msh.OverSpent, msh.BilledDate, msh.PeriodStartDate, msh.PeriodEndDate, msh.OverSpent FROM MinimumSpendHistory msh INNER JOIN BillPlanMinimums bpm ON msh.BillingPeriodKey = @BPlanKey and bpm.BillPlanMinimumKey = msh.BillPlanMinimumKey INNER JOIN BillPlans bp ON bp.BillPlanKey = bpm.BillPlanKey INNER JOIN ClubMembers cm ON cm.parentmemberkey is null and cm.ClubMemberKey = msh.ClubMemberKey order by cm.clubaccountnumber asc, msh.BilledDate asc Query #2, query of all columns for PREVIOUS month, but I only need two (spent and over spent), added to the query from above, joined on the customer number: set @BPlanKeyLastMo = '##PREVMONTH##' EXECUTE @RCLastMo = Minimum_UpdateForPeriod @BPlanKeyLastMo SELECT cm.clubaccountnumber, bp.Description , msh.PeriodMinObligation, msh.SpentTotal, msh.UnderSpent, msh.OverSpent, msh.BilledDate, msh.PeriodStartDate, msh.PeriodEndDate, msh.OverSpent FROM MinimumSpendHistory msh INNER JOIN BillPlanMinimums bpm ON msh.BillingPeriodKey = @BPlanKeyLastMo and bpm.BillPlanMinimumKey = msh.BillPlanMinimumKey INNER JOIN BillPlans bp ON bp.BillPlanKey = bpm.BillPlanKey INNER JOIN ClubMembers cm ON cm.parentmemberkey is null and cm.ClubMemberKey = msh.ClubMemberKey order by cm.clubaccountnumber asc, msh.BilledDate asc Big thank you to any and all that are willing to lend their help and time. Cheers! • database modeling for google app engine for multiple revison of entity.

    - by iamgopal
    hi, in my application ( kind of wiki clone ) - an article is frequently changing. and i need to track all changes that are done on that article. { text only. } one crude way i have done it, is to add a datetime property and create a new entity everytime something change. which is too much database wasting. { and also un-necessary index waste too. } and also need to re-create parent-child and entity relationships. i also have log which can show changes -- but i want some thing easier , so that jumping from one version to another version could be easier. ideas ? thanks.

  • Would you store binary data in database or in file system?

    - by paul
    This is a question which has been asked before (large-text-and-images-in-sql) but mainly for data which will be changed. In my case the data will be stored and never changed. Just seems sensible to keep everything together. Are there any reasons why I should not store static binary data in a database? Assuming it is a sensible thing to do, are there any advantages to storing such data in separate tables? (You might begin to realise now that I'm not a DB expert...) Clarify: There will probably be no more than 10-20 users but these will be in the US and in the UK. The binary data will have to be transfered in any case.

  • What is the best way to keep database data encrypted with user passwords?

    - by Dan Sosedoff
    Let's say an application has really specific data which belongs to a user, and nobody is supposed to see it except the owner. I use MySQL database with DataMapper ORM mapper. The application is written in Ruby on Sinatra. Application behavior: User signs up for an account. Creates username and password. Logs into his dashboard. Some fields in specific tables must be protected. Basically, I'm looking for auto-encryption for a model properties. Something like this: class Transaction include DataMapper::Resource property :id, Serial property :value, String, :length => 1024, :encrypted => true ... etc ... belongs_to :user end I assume that encryption/decryption on the fly will cause performance problems, but that's ok. At least if that works - I'm fine. Any ideas how to do this?

  • drop-down combo box-like functionality for queries.

    - by Frank Developer
    Is it possible to provide the following type of fuctionality with informix client tools? As the user types the first two characters of a name, the drop-down list is empty. At the third character, the list fills with just the names beginning with those three characters. At the fourth character, MS-Access completes the first matching name (assuming the combo's AutoExpand is on). Once enough characters are typed to identify the customer, the user tabs to the next field. The time taken to load the combo between keystrokes is minimal. This occurs once only for each entry, unless the user backspaces through the first three characters again. If your list still contains too many records, you can reduce them by another order of magnitude by changing the value of constant conSuburbMin from 3 to 4.

  • Analyzing I/O Characteristics and Sizing Storage Systems for SQL Server Database Applications

    Understanding how to analyze the characteristics of I/O patterns in the Microsoft® SQL Server® data management software and how they relate to a physical storage configuration is useful in determining deployment requirements for any given workload. A well-performing I/O subsystem is a critical component of any SQL Server application. I/O subsystems should be sized in the same manner as other hardware components such as memory and CPU. As workloads increase it is common to increase the number of CPUs and increase the amount of memory. Increasing disk resources is often necessary to achieve the right performance, even if there is already enough capacity to hold the data. • Online DATAFILE MOVE in Oracle Database 12c

    - by Ulrike Schwinn (DBA Community)
