  • Should I go with Java or Python for my next project, after using PHP for 5 years? [closed]

    I have a full-time PHP job and I've been working with PHP for 5 years. I'm not willing to stay within this technology stack any more. I also worked with Java for 2 year before, so for me it looks more obvious to switch back to Java. However during last 5 years I was thinking about starting my own project, and now I think I have a very good SAAS idea. I'm completely confused what technology should I use for my project. I don't want to do it in PHP, and after reading many articles about rapid prototype development it seems to me that Django is the best option. I will continue to work full time for my current employer because I need to pay my bills and will work on my project in my free time. The concern I have is should I do my project in Java or Python? To be realistic there is always a risk when you are doing your own project/start-up. If I do it in Java in the worst case scenario I believe I will be able to find a full time Java position because I already have some experience in Java + recent experience in my project. With regards to Python it looks like it is not very popular in my area and salaries are much more lower then for Java. On the other hand I have a feeling that if I chose Java it will take me a way longer to finish my project. Guys I'm completely confused and I need your advice. P.S. I have moved to London 2 years ago from another country, local guys are very welcome to share their thoughts about London's job market.

  • Installing datacommons from sunlight

    I know strictly nothing from python and I am installing datacommons from the sunlightlabs. So I followed step by step the README.md https://github.com/sunlightlabs/datacommons First, it is said in the doc to add to the virtualenv dc_data, dc_matcchbox but I didn't find them. But I went to the final step to run ./manage.py runserver so I had the following message : (datacommons)newben@newben-VirtualBox:~/share-ubuntu/sunlightlabs-datacommons-e3ff1a3$ ./manage.py runserver fatal: Not a git repository (or any parent up to mount parent /home/mbenchoufi) Stopping at filesystem boundary (GIT_DISCOVERY_ACROSS_FILESYSTEM not set). Error: Can't find the file 'settings.py' in the directory containing './manage.py'. It appears you've customized things. You'll have to run django-admin.py, passing it your settings module.   • Should I use heroku or should I have my own ssl? [closed]

    Base on your experience, can you please advice what will be better for me? Issue : I build applications and there are 2 major constraints. 1. ssl is needed since I used facebook api's. So, only heroku is a good option. 2. My web components tend to hit the Max_Execution_Time very often, since I pull a lot of data using the facebook api. Future possible purpose of this site : 1. Will use more apis from google, twitter, future. 2. Might request for donations. 3. Just for hobby. I have two options : 1. Create a web site in heroku itself by converting all the php components to a background worker in python using django. 2. Dont use heroku at all. Do the the complete hosting with godaddy (shared plan). And buy an ssl so that I can use fb apis etc. In this scenario, what do you suggest me to do?

  • I am having a hard time learning Python, is it just me? [closed]

    For the past two weeks I am trying to learn Python and a framework for web development, while doing so I learned a lot but not what I was looking for. I did manage to get everything set up and running, followed tutorials, but I still have not managed to create a navigation bar and a simple template website. My goal is to create web applications (like a blog) and perhaps platforms similar to stackoverflow. In which language was stackoverflow created in? I believe that Python Django or Python Tornado (which I tried) is more for people who have learned desktop application development. It is hard for me to make sense out of the complex and fragmented system. I'm able to develop with PHP and have already created blogs and similar applications. If Python and a framework is not for me, what type of language would be for me, which languages are used for these type of platforms, I would like to develop myself? I only omitted PHP because I found it later on a bit too inheriting, and the code is hardly readable and becomes quickly cluttered, I love how readable Python code is.

  • For what purpose I can use c++ to increase my skills?

    I want to learn new things. Initially I was a PHP programmer. Then I thought it was not enough. Then I started learning Java thing. It took me 3 months to learn. Java, J2EE, Spring, Hibernte, Spring Security, Spring Roo and many design patterns MVC and stuff like AOP, DI . I never knew that before but I got the idea what J2EE. After 3 months, I just made a simple page with Registration form integrated with Spring Security. I wanted to make one complete project in it but that was too much for me and I didn't want spend more time on it as then i need to host that as well so I left that. Then I started learning Python and made few sys admin scripts and then Django and now I am finishing a complete web app in Python. Now I want to learn C++, but before that I need to find out what i can do with it. Just like I know Python is very useful because I have my own servers so I can write scripting and websites so Python is good for me. But I am confused in which areas C++ can help me. I don't want to end up like I have with Java where either I have big projects or nothing for day to day use.

While executing script I am getting an error message saying "Error sending mail: Connection error from mail.utiba.com on port 465 ()". However the connection to the mail server is working fine, I can connect to the mail server using other mail clients. Please suggest what I am doing wrong here.     I am using a SMTP mail server which require user + ssl authentication for connection. I am looking for the perl modules to connect to the mail server and send emails but doesn't found anything helpful. Any suggestion for perl module or any perl code would be really appreciated.   • There is no attachment in the sent mail by iPhone

    I'm trying to send a recorded sound file as attachment with MFMailComposeViewController. The sound file is OK. The picker shows the correct file name, shows the audio file icon as attachment, sends the mail, but there is no attachment in the result. I attached below the source of the sent mail. There is a "text/plain" content type part instead of "Content-Disposition: attachment;" as expected. This is my code code to define the path and attach the audio file.     I'm using a gmail account to send emails from my website. I'm using the same account to pick up emails which are generated by the contact facility on my site. I'm using the Reply-To field to attempt to make it easier to hit reply and easily get back to people. The message comes up with the 'from' address and ignores the 'reply-to' address.   • What is wrong with this mail header text?

    The following $header is being sent via PHP's mail($to,$subject,$content,$header) command. The mail arrives and appears to have an attachment. But the mail text is empty as is the file. I think this has something to do with line spacing but I can't see the problem. I have tried putting the contents (between the boundaries) in $contents rather than appending it to $header. It doesn't make a difference. Any thoughts?   • Problem sending email with Codeigniter - Headers sent in the message body

    Having a strange issue with the email class in codeigniter. When I send email directly to my gmail account email address, it works fine. However if I send email to a different email address and use POP3 to import that email address into gmail, then for some reason all the headers are included in the message.   • Why are changes to coffeescript files not being compiled when my Rails 3.2.0 app is in development mode?

    Normally, any changes I make to .js.coffee files in my Rails 3.2.0 app in development mode take effect when I refresh the page. All of a sudden, this is not happening. If I do rake assets:precompile, then the changes are shown, but then if I do rake assets:clean they go back to not being shown. What is causing this? Edit: Restarting the server makes the changes show. Why isn't this happening automatically as before? It can be with this library or a different one.

    I encountered a strange performance in my current project, which is about session. The strange part is it was normal in Safari but failed in other browsers (includes chrome, firefox and opera). Thanks." render :action => "new" end Also I created a before_filter in the application controller, which has the following code: ApplicationController.current_account = Account.find_by_id(session[:current_account].id) unless session[:current_account].blank? For Safari, there is no any problem. But for the other browsers, the session[:current_account] does not exist and so produced the following error message: RuntimeError in AccountsController#create_step_2 Called id for nil, which would mistakenly be 4 -- if you really wanted the id of nil, use object_id Please could anyone help me?

  • I want my logs sent to my mail with logrotate

    Not strictly a question about programming as such, more of a log handling question. Anyway. My company has multiple clients, and each of these clients have a set of logs that I'd rather much want to get sent to by e-mail to me. Now, another prerequisite is that they're hilighted by simple HTML. All that is very well, I've managed to make a hilighter for the given log types. So, what I do is I use logrotate's prerotate stuff to send the logs as an e-mail message. Example: /var/log/a.log /var/log/b.log { daily missingok copytruncate prerotate /usr/bin/python /home/foo/hilight_logs /var/log/{a,b}.log | /usr/sbin/sendmail -FLog\ mailer [email protected] [email protected] endscript } The problem with this approach is basically that logrotate sucks: it'll run the command for every log file specified in the specifier, and to my knowledge there's no way to know which of the log files is being handled. (Which wouldn't really help anyway.) Short of repeating the exact same logrotate up to 10 times on different machines, the only thing I can do is just to get bogged down with log spam every night. And I grew tired of it today, so I ask.

    I'm trying to extend the PHP mailer class from Worx by adding a method which allows me to add attachments using string data rather than path to the file. I came up with something like this: public function addAttachmentString($string, $name='', $encoding = 'base64', $type = 'application/octet-stream') { $path = 'php://memory/' . md5(microtime()); $file = fopen($path, 'w'); fwrite($file, $string); fclose($file); $this->AddAttachment($path, $name, $encoding, $type); } However, all I get is a PHP warning: PHP Warning: fopen() [<a href='function.fopen'>function.fopen</a>]: Invalid php:// URL specified There aren't any decent examples with the original documentation, but I've found a couple around the internet (including one here on SO), and my usage appears correct according to them. Has anyone had any success with using this? My alternative is to create a temporary file and clean up - but that will mean having to write to disc, and this function will be used as part of a large batch process and I want to avoid slow disc operations (old server) where possible. This is only a short file but has different information for each person the script emails.

    Hello all, I am making use of PHPMailer to send mail through GMail. The code I use is straight from a tutorial and it works perfectly on my laptop. However, testing this on a Windows 2003 Server - it seems to always return an SMPT error: SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host. Mailer Error: SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host. Here is the settings I use in PHPMailer: include("phpmailer/class.phpmailer.php"); $mail = new PHPMailer(); $mail->IsSMTP(); $mail->SMTPAuth = true; // enable SMTP authentication $mail->SMTPSecure = "ssl"; // use ssl $mail->Host = "smtp.gmail.com"; // GMAIL's SMTP server $mail->Port = 465; // SMTP port used by GMAIL server Can I say with confidence that this isn't a port issue, since I am connecting to another server on port 465 and it is sending mail. If not, please explain. How can I resolve this issue? Thanks all for any help

    I read all topics related to this question in stackoverflow and whole internet and cant find working sollution... Each owner has his item and when someone buy his item, owner gets an confirmation email, but when in cart is few same owner items, he gets several same email letters, so I need to remove dublicated array entries. I have tried to use DISTINCT and array_uniques functions but no luck. Any advices?   • PHP mail may be filtered out by spam?

    I am creating a small company, and would like to send out emails to my clients once they have signed up for my service to activate their accounts. I am currently using PHP's mail() function, however I am worried that my emails are being filtered out by spam filters.     I am following Ryan Bates's tutorial on Rails 3 ActionMailer. I generate the mailer in terminal and then establish a setup_mail.rb under config/initializers.
