    I've just taken over managing the network for a small charity, and am finding internet access very flaky - we keep getting "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." errors (HTTP Error 12031 according to the Windows network diagnostic tool). It doesn't seem to be anything to do with our ISP since it also affects internal traffic (even requests to an Apache instance on my localhost!) Adjusting the MTU setting in the Windows XP registry sometimes seems to help for a few minutes after rebooting, but the problem always returns.

  • What user is the script run as after Carbon Copy Cloner ends scheduled task?

    On Mac OS X I keep data on a local server mirrored with the same data on a remote server with a scheduled backup task done with Carbon Copy Cloner. After the backup is done a bash script is run as specified in the scheduled task options of CCC. Is the script run as root? Or differently and more generally: as my script writes to a log file, what command should I put on my script to see on the log if the script is running as root or something else?

  • how to disable all system sounds - permanently

    I prefer the sound scheme of Windows 7 HP to be set to "No Sounds" ALL the time. The problem is, when I switch themes, the themes switch sound schemes also. I know I can go in and disable/change to "No Sounds" every time by hand, but is there a way to turn it off and keep it off, regardless of the theme? Thanks!

    The last major site using Silverlight was Netflix but there's been an effort to implement Premium Video Extensions for HTML5 on the Mac for Safari. According to Netflix support is coming with OS X Yosemite. (See blog link below) For other platforms it appears Google Chrome also has support for Premium Video Extensions for HTML5 and Netflix will use it.     I have a domain name which currently points to a shared hosting service. I've set up a dedicated Apache server for the web hosting, but would like to keep using the mail server of the old host. Is the correct way to do this to add an A record that points to the IP of the new server, and an MX record that points to the hostname of the mail server? does anything need to be done with the NS records?

  • Postfix mailq - send every x minutes

    I got about 2000 clients on my website that have subscribed to our mailing list. I've used in the past Swift Mailer but it didn't work the way it was supposed to. I'm wondering if there is a way that Postfix could keep emails on the mailq (if lots of emails are sent at the same time) and send chunks of 20-30 emails every 10-20 mins. So this way, our server is not blacklisted. Any suggestions will be appreciate it.

    Hi, I've copied a folder of data from one linux server to another via a tarball. The group ids (GIDs) don't match up on the two servers, so I now have files that look like -rw-rw-r-- 1 tim 1013 88 2008-11-14 10:18 config There is a mixture of group ownerships in the folder, and I want to keep them owned by different groups on the same server, so I can't just use chgrp -R. How do I change all files/folders with GID 1013 to another group, without affecting other files/folders? Thanks

    I have 2 websites a main website hosted at fasthosts and an e-commerce website hosted at Vidahost. I want to combine both websites under the same domain set. Main site would be www.mydomain.com Store site would be shop.mydomain.com I want to keep the directory path showing on the shop subdomain so what was previously www.mystore.com/product/hat would become shop.mydomain.com/product/hat How can I accomplish this, have already created the subdomain on fasthosts and setup web forwarding to the store but the directory paths do not show.

  • Does PHP *have* to serialize/unserialize session data between each HTTP request? Or is there a sett

    I think I understand why sessions are evil but for snappy client user experience I don't want to have to re-query the database on each HTTP request. (As a comparision, Java servlets can effortlessly keep tons of session objects in memory.) Can PHP be set to do this or does it have to serialize because it runs from CGI/FastCGI and therefore by definition is a new process each time a request comes in? I will be running PHP using LAMP.

My server application has a white-list of users from the domain directory server. How does my server app authenticate the user from the directory based on this socket opening attempt?     With a number of laptops out there the likelihood of one being stolen is high. What methods, preferably free, can be used to secure the data on the computers? The laptops do not have any special hardware on them, and generally keep their user data in a dropbox folder. One small step taken is to have the the dropbox folder encrypted by Windows 7. Any additional suggestions are greatly appreciated. The data in the dropbox folder is sensitive.

  • Can a BIND server be a slave to a non-BIND master DNS server?

    If I have a master DNS that is not bind - can bind still slave to it? (ie does it use the DNS protocol or something else?). Kind of related - but do people still do this or do they use some other form of data replication to keep DNS records in sync to the slaves (ie file/database copying)? I would like to have the slaves refreshed as fast as possible so I am thinking normal slaving with is expiry/poll based might not be optimal?

  • How to prevent windows from being resized?

    Adobe Audition is really stupid in that when you change the size of the window, and then change it back to the original size, all the frame positions are lost and you have to tediously reposition them by hand. I'd like to make it completely impossible to ever resize the window, just keep it maximized at all times. If I accidentally click "Restore" or drag the title bar, it should either ignore it, or move around the screen while staying the same size. Is there any way to do this?
