Thin client - cloud machine - to run via iPad, iPhone, most Androids etc

I'm tired of having a laptop macbook that breaks down or having files that I need to sync via dropbox etc all the time via the machines to different OS installations. It sucks. I want a thin client where I can login on any machine - my iPhone, PC desktop, iPad etc to one running machine. I would like to replace a modernly powerful desktop iMac with a thin client running via my iPad. I will connect the iPad with a keyboard/mouse too so you get the idea. But I want to be able to use some of the Android phones as well (I guess most Android phones today has a good enough performance/resolution etc to run a thin client). Of course it has to be able to have input/output in sound. Printing can be solved by PDF/emailing etc - so no direct communication to the printer ports to USB etc is necessary. Is there such a service today? It should cost somewhere under something like $40/ month. I will run stuff like CPU heavy duty ableton for music production, xCode for making iOS apps, some games etc. And on the thin client also run virtual machines. VM of Ubuntu and Windows.

Has it also got that ease of use like swapping drives on the go, simply extend capacity by plugging in new drives, notify me of drive errors, disk failure protection, dynamic space of "partitions", better/worse effective capacity, etc. Which is more secure? Am I able to simply replace a bad drive with a new one on unraid? What happens if my pc fails? Lets say the cpu overheats. Since I have a complete pc which is going to be replaced, I only have to pay the software to use unraid. I am going to use my nas for: music library (how well does it integrate with iTunes? ) picture library movie library development (i need to be able to be to use time machine) I am going to use this nas with a MacBook pro. My current disks: 2x 500Gb 1x 1.5Tb 1x 2Tb On a drobo fs I would have 2.26 Tb of space. What would it be on unraid? Is FreeNAS also an alternative?

Misconfigured external monitor on Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3

I have an external monitor (specifically, an HDTV) hooked up to my 2.53GHz 13" macbook pro. This display works fine and I use it with my mac in clamshell mode (eg. with an external keyboard/mouse and the laptop closed and the built-in mac screen turned off) My Mac has multiple users on it. For User A I can use the mac with the external monitor in both clamshell and dual-monitor setups. For User B, I can use the monitor in a dual-monitor setup, but whenever I switch to clamshell mode the Mac switches to an incorrect output resolution or frequency setting that my HDTV doesn't recognize, resulting in a blank screen and a message about Unsupported Resolution. Chances are I did this to myself by misconfiguring my display settings at some point in the past, but I have no idea how to undo it. I (obviously) can't seen the display to change the settings when it's borked. I can see the display settings if I switch to Dual-monitor mode, but those settings only affect the dual monitor setup; no matter how I change the settings in dual-monitor mode, the clamshell mode setup remains borked. How can I dig myself out of this hole?

Slow network file transfer (under 20KB/s) on newly built x64 Win7

I am getting <20KB/s for local network file transfer. If I transfer a very small file (less than 100KB) it would start quickly then slow down to <20KB/s. all subsequently network file transfer would be slow, a reboot is needed to reset this. If I transfer a large file it would be stuck on calculating for a long time and then begin with <20KB/s immediately. This is a newly built desktop running Windows 7 x64 SP1. Realtek gigabit LAN from the motherboard (ASRock Extreme3 gen3). Problematic speed is observed on the private LAN, both through ethernet and WiFi. The Router is D-Link DIR-655. Remote Differential Compression is off. Drivers are up-to-date from ASRock's website. I have tested network file transfer to and from another Windows 7 laptop and a MacBook Pro, so I am fairly certain it is the desktop's problem. The slow speed only happens with one direction also, outbound from the desktop, regardless of whether I initiate the file transfer action from the origin or the destination. Inbound network file transfer and internet speeds are fine, so I don't think this is a hardware issue. I am getting 74.8MB/s internet upload speed from speedtest.net (http://www.speedtest.net/result/1852752479.png). Inbound network file transfer I can get around 10-15MB/s. I am hoping this community has some insight for me to troubleshoot this. I don't see anything obviously related from the Event Viewer, and beyond that I just don't know where else to look. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Using Windows Explorer, how to find file names starting with a dot (period), in 7 or Vista?

I've got a MacBook laptop in the house, and when Mac OS X copies files over the network, it often brings along hidden "dot-files" with it. For instance, if I copy "SomeUtility.zip", there will also be copied a hidden ".SomeUtility.zip" file. I consider these OS X dot-files as useless turds of data as far as the rest of my network is concerned, and don't want to leave them on my Windows file server. Let's assume these dot-files will continue to happen. i.e. Think of the issue of getting OS X to stop creating those files, in the first place, to be another question altogether. Rather: How can I use Windows Explorer to find files that begin with a dot / period? I'd like to periodically search my file server and blow them away. I tried searching for files matching ".*" but that yielded – and not unexpectedly – all files and folders. Is there a way to enter more specific search criteria when searching in Windows Explorer? I'm referring to the search box that appears in the upper-right corner of an Explorer window. Please tell me there is a way to escape my query to do what I want? (Failing that, I know I can map a drive letter and drop into a cygwin prompt and use the UNIX 'find' command, but I'd prefer a shiny easy way.)

Ensure Mac's get correct machine name from DHCP?

I have a problem in our network where our Mac's occasionally get given the wrong machine name while, I guess, getting a new DHCP lease. The DHCP servers are Windows based - the bulk of our network is Windows, but we have some Linux machines and an increasing number of Macs. The problem specifics is that occasionally a Mac will take on the name of another machine in the network. For example, I have a new Macbook Pro. In the OSX setup is gets called "gomez", and initially starts up on the network with that name without any problems. But after a few days when the machine was restarted (it had several restarts in the meantime), it ended up being called "florrie", which is actually the name of another machine in another part of the network. All network ops work fine, and indeed you don't notice most of the time - it's only when you run apps like Perforce that require the hostname that you get problems. I'm sorry I don't have more info than that, but if I know what to look for I can dig out some more facts. Or any hints on checking the network setup would be useful.

Disable XP disk check using FAT32

Right now I'm using Windows XP and Macintosh on my MacBook Pro via Bootcamp. Sometimes my XP would crash and when I restarted it it would have to go through disk check, although it says I can skip it by pushing a key, but this never worked for me. I did a bit of research online on how to disable disk check and found chkntfs /x c: but when I tried this out in my cmd it said the disk is FAT32 format. I tried to convert my C: drive from FAT32 to NTFS by using convert c: /FS:NTFS but when I tried this it told me to locate my C: drive. I tried to type C: and Bootcamp but couldn't really get past it. How can I find files added to the system within X minutes of a specific time?

I have done a fresh install of Mac OS X Mountain Lion today on a new MacBook. Because this was a new install, when I finally got round to configuring some of my own developer things, I was surprised to find some app had installed a binary into /usr/local/bin - a single binary called galileod. Interestingly, I can't find anything online about galileod. I had only installed the bare minimum of software at this point. Looking in the file columns I can see Date Modified was 9th November 2012, but Date Added to the system was today at 17:01. It's now 10:20PM and I can't remember which software I was installing at that point. So how do I find out which other files were installed to the system within, say, 5 minutes either side of 17:01? EDIT: I found out what galileod was by running galileod --help - it is a binary used with Fitbit to communicate with the USB dongle. So that's the mystery solved - but it would still be interesting to know how to find files added within X minutes of a timeframe for future reference.

CDROM does not appear on desktop, MACOS 10.5.7

When I pop a CDROM into the drive of my Macbook Pro, It spins up, I hear it, but no icon appears on the desktop. (I think it's 10.5.7; actually not sure how to verify this on Mac, but I think I saw a 10.5.7 flash by somewhere). In the finder preferences, I have "Show these items on the Desktop" set to show HDs, External Disks, and CDs, DVDs, and ipods. All three of those are checked. I do see the internal HD on the desktop. In Disk utility I can see the CD/DVD hardware. It says "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E...". From Disk Utility I can eject the drive. But in Finder, there is never a CD/DVD listed under "Devices". When I insert a disk, nothing happens, I cannot see it. I also cannot boot from bootable CDROMs by holding C down . Suggestions? I am not very experienced with Mac; I have used Windows for years. EDIT Two updates: I saw this article on support.apple.com, and modified the hostconfig appropriately. It did not have the AUTODISKMOUNT entry, so I added one, rebooted. Same behavior. It does not see the CDROM in Finder, does not mount it on desktop. I put an old manufactured CDROM into the drive, and voila! it showed up on the desktop. The CD that does not appear is a GNome Partition Editor Live CD, which I guess is based on debian. That CD boots in other (non-Mac) PCs. I want to use this to adjust the Bootcamp partition. Suggestions?

I know other solutions, such as Ansible are easier to setup for that purpose, but I really want to stay with Puppet. Enable FTP on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion Server

There is a LAN comprising several mac machines (iMac, Mac Pro, macbook etc.), Airport Express router and Mac Mini Server running OS X Server 10.8 (Mountain Lion Server). I need to share a folder on Mac Mini Server by FTP. What did I try so far: Made special partition for FTP Access, call it "Reports" So shared folder would be "/Volumes/Reports" Gave access every user and group in system, and also enabled guest access. I checked posix acl, which is "rwxrwxrwx", I checked sharing settings in "Preferences.app" and "Server.app" Checked that users have access to FTP service Enabled FTP in Server.app I tried access to shared folder (by FTP): via Cyberduck via Finder via shell: ftp server.local And what I got: $ ftp [email protected] Trying 10.0.2.2... Connected to server.local. 220 10.0.2.2 FTP server (tnftpd 20100324+GSSAPI) ready. 331 User ftpuser accepted, provide password. Mac creating files w/ wrong perms on samba share

In my group, which is very heterogeneous in terms of machines, we use a samba share to collaborate on files and such. In all but one case, it works as expected (or at least close enough). The one exception is my boss' laptop, a snow leopard macbook air. On his desktop (also snow leopard), if he creates a file it ends up serverside with perms of 774, but when he creates it with the Air, the perms are 644. The key problem is the lack of group write permission on the laptop created files. What's really confusing is that everything that I've looked at on the two machines are identical - same version of OS X, same version of samba (3.0.25b-apple), same settings for the same software, etc. I can't imagine why one machine would be different than the other, but it is. To try to be complete w/ the description, here is the relevant portion of my smb.conf file: comment = my Share path = /path/to/share public = no writeable = yes printable = no force group = myshare directory mask = 0770 create mask = 0770 force create mode = 0770 force directory mode = 0770 EDIT: I looked at three more Macs and all of them worked as expected which leaves this one laptop the true oddball. This wasn't as good as a test as the others though, as they were all leopard.

Setup 2003 R2 Radius server to work on vista/seven

Hi All, I'm currently trying to configure my 2003 R2 server RADIUS module to enable WIFI client to authenticate throught my Active Directory. The RADIUS server use MS-CHAP V2 as encryption method. I got several Access Point running DD-WRT, configured to use WPA2-Enterprise security that use Radius Server. Everything is setup, and almost working. When I say almost working, I mean, I can login using my AD Credential on my IPod or even on a MacBook running OS X, Windows XP also work with some little tweak in connection properties. The problem is Windows Vista or Windows Seven clients computers that are not inside domain. It doesn't work at all, it doesn't even prompt for user/password/domain. I already install the patch for IAS to make the certsrv compatible with Vista and Seven, but still doesn't work. Anyone ever encounter the same issue I have right now? I'm searching for a solution to this for several already and still not find anything. Looks like many people have the same issue too. Thanks all for you eventual answers.

How to access a SIM card programatically?

Just any old GSM compatible SIM card (bonus for 3G USIM). I presume I need some hardware? Can anyone recommend something cheap for hobbyist, and something more professional? I presume that there will be full docs of an API with the h/w, so maybe this should be tagged "no-programming-related"? Sorry, if so. Any good URLs or books (I am conversant with the 3GPP standards). I'm not (black hat) hacking, don't worry, just not pleased with the likes of SIM Card Secretary, Data Doctor Recovery, etc, so would like to code my own, but might turn it commercial, or offer SIM card programming services (data recover from damaged card, etc) as a sideline.

Setting kernel memory for installing postgresql

My question is about setting the kernel shared memory for installing postgresql on mac osx 10.6.8. In the readme file of postgresql it is said: Shared Memory PostgreSQL uses shared memory extensively for caching and inter-process communication. Unfortunately, the default configuration of Mac OS X does not allow suitable amounts of shared memory to be created to run the database server. Before running the installation, please ensure that your system is configured to allow the use of larger amounts of shared memory. Note that this does not 'reserve' any memory so it is safe to configure much higher values than you might initially need. You can do this by editting the file /etc/sysctl.conf - e.g. % sudo vi /etc/sysctl.conf On a MacBook Pro with 2GB of RAM, the author's sysctl.conf contains: kern.sysv.shmmax=1610612736 kern.sysv.shmall=393216 kern.sysv.shmmin=1 kern.sysv.shmmni=32 kern.sysv.shmseg=8 kern.maxprocperuid=512 kern.maxproc=2048 Note that (kern.sysv.shmall * 4096) should be greater than or equal to kern.sysv.shmmax. kern.sysv.shmmax must also be a multiple of 4096. Once you have edited (or created) the file, reboot before continuing with the installation. If you wish to check the settings currently being used by the kernel, you can use the sysctl utility: % sysctl -a The database server can now be installed. I'm a real beginner with all this but need to instal postgresql for academic purposes do you know how i can set this kernel shared memory. Won't that be harmful for my system? Thank you in advance. Mac updated just now, postgres now broken

I run postgres 9.1 / ruby 1.9.2 / rails 3.1.0 on a maxbook air for local dev. It's all been running smoothly for months, (though this is the first time I've done development on a mac.) It's a macbook air from last year, and today I got the mac osx software update message as I have a few times before, and my system downloaded approx 450mb of updates and restarted. It now says it's on OSX 10.7.3. Point is, postgres has stopped working, when I start my thin server (mirror heroku cedar) as normal, and then browse to my rails app I get: PG::Error could not connect to server: Permission denied Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/pgsql_socket/.s.PGSQL.5432"? What happened? After browsing around a few questions I'm still confused, but here's some extra info: Running psql from command line gives same error I can run pgadmin 3 and connect via it and run SQL no problems Running which psql shows the version as /usr/bin/psql I created a PostgreSQL user back when I got the mac (it's always been on lion) I've no idea why, almost certainly I was following a tutorial which I neglected to store in my notes. Point is I am aware there is a _postgres user as well. I know it's rubbish, but apart from a note on passwords, I don't have any extra info on how I configured postgres - though the obvious implication is that I did not use the _postgres user. Anyone have suggestions or information on what might have changed / what I can try to debug and fix? Thanks. Disappearing Arial on 2 Macs

I noticed that Safari started rendering common web pages in a funny manner on two different Macs that I have. One is a Macbook Pro and the other a Mac Pro desktop. Yahoo and Google would appear all excessively bold or all italic and not at all look right or acceptable. The computers are all running OS X 10.6.3 "Snow Leopard" Turns out that "Arial.TTF" and "Arial Bold.ttf" got deleted somehow on these two computers. I restored Arial through Font Book and got my web mojo back. So questions: 1) Anyone seen "arial" strangely randomly disappear? The only thing in common is these are the only two computers out of eight on site that recently got Adobe CS 5 installed. Has anyone had CS 5 delete arial? 2) When I restored arial with font book, it goes into User fonts rather than the All fonts. Can I use Font Book to restore a font in /System/Library/Fonts or do I need to do that manually? 3) I located THIS article on the web regarding OS X fonts. Essentially, Snow Leopard did away with the older .dfont format and replaced with open True Type. There is a minimum font list, but Arial is not among them. Arial is installed by MS Office. 4) Why are web sites affected by Arial being missing anyway? If I look at the HTML source for Yahoo for example, "arial" is specified by name only in an ad. Yahoo itself does not specify a font name. In my Safari preferences, I have Times and Courier specified as the default font which is the default for Safari when installed. How does a missing Arial screw things up anyway? Thanks in advance.

mac gets stuck in a blue screen during boot

Hi, a macbook pro 2008 unibody, after restart gets stuck in a blue screen. I used the Leopard disk and I verified and repaired permissions, which seem to be a problem, because the assistant found some wrong files. After restart I got the same problem. After googling I reset PRAM and the other (I do not remember the name now). Same problem. I check that I can boot in safe mode, although it is a lot slower. So before anything I try to make a time machine backup, hoping that I can be done from safe mode. First question: If it works, is it possible to do a clean leopard install (I do not like Snow) and migrate all user accounts from the backup, although it was done in safe mode? Second question: I read about the feature "archive and install" from the leopard disc. Is it reliable? Because I am afraid of losing all data ... Third question: I think this boot stuck has to do with the load of some program or service. It would explain why the computer does boot on safe mode and not in the normal one. I would then like to check what the computer loads during boot, but in more detail that with the information provided from /system preferecens/account/start, because there I removed everything. Where can I find more advanced information? And, if I remove programs from the safe mode, will it be effective druing the normal boot? Thanks

Can't open cocoa emacs from terminal using open -a

I installed emacs on my MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.6.5 from this site http://emacsformacosx.com/. I believe this is what used to be called cocoa emacs. I dragged it into my Application folder and it works fine when I run it from there. I want to be able to run it from the Terminal. After some googling, I tried open -a /Application/Emacs.app foo.txt (foo.txt was and existing file). I got two emacs windows - one with welcome screen and one with foo.txt loaded. I tried a few applications in the /Applications directory and they did not seem to behave like this. I had installed it using my own account (an admin account) so after doing ls -l on /Application I noticed that the owner and group were different from the other entries in this folder. I recursively changed the owner and group to root and wheel, like the others, but this did not help. The only thing that looks funny now is that there that ls -l show a @ character which has something to do with extended attributes but I don't know how to check these. Any suggestions on what to check next? Is using the open command the only to run the program? Can I simulate what it does using a shell script?

How do I troubleshoot a problem syncing Google contacts to an iPad?

I use my MacBook Pro to sync content onto my wife's iPad. (She doesn't have a computer.) She doesn't want all my contacts from the Address Book app on my MBP. But she does want her Google contacts on her iPad. I've tried the following settings in iTunes: I created a group in my address book called "Claire's" (and put just a couple contacts in it), since if one enables "Sync Address Book Contacts" one either has to select "All" or at least one group. I've double-checked her email address in the dialog that comes up after pressing the "Configure" button. But after syncing, only the couple contacts in the "Claire's" group are in the Contacts app on her iPad. I've checked her Google contacts, and she has over 2000. For some reason they're not syncing. How do I find out why they're not? I looked to see if I could just use an app to do the sync on the iPad, but couldn't find one with good ratings. Do you have one to recommend so I can give up struggling with getting this working in iTunes?

Simulate Incorrect Content-Length Headers for HTTP in C#

We are building a comprehensive integration test framework in C# for our application which exists on top of HTTP using IIS7 to host our applications. As part of our integration tests we want to test incoming requests which will result in EndOfStreamExceptions ("Unable to read beyond end of stream") that occur when a client sends up a HTTP header indicating a larger body size than it actually transmits as part of the body. We want to test our error recovery code for this condition so we need to simulate these sorts of requests. I am looking for a .NET Fx-based socket library or custom HttpWebRequest replacement that specifically allows developers to simulate such conditions to add to our integration test suite. Does anyone know of any such libraries? A scriptable solution would work as well.
