    Hi all, I'm using the field_for form helper with a loop: <% f.fields_for :permissions do |permission_form| %> <tr> <td><%= permission_form.object.security_module.name %><%= permission_form.hidden_field(:security_module_id) %></td> <td><%= permission_form.object.security_module.description %></td> <tr> <% end %> The resulting output of the above code is this: <input id="role_permissions_attributes_0_id" name="role[permissions_attributes][0][id]" type="hidden" value="76" /> <tr> <td>Diary<input id="role_permissions_attributes_0_security_module_id" name="role[permissions_attributes][0][security_module_id]" type="hidden" value="13" /></td> <td>Access to the Diary Module</td> </tr> <!-- next input field then <tr> tag --> The problem with this markup is that the input tag falls outside of the tr tag which there for causes validation issues with XHTML. Does anyone know how I can have the input tag fall inside the tr tag therefore giving me valid XHTML 1.0 STRICT markup? Thanks

    Hi. I'm trying to use a script to control my power options since XP doesn't give you an intuitive way to change CPU Frequency options. Here's my script so far: meh = `cmd.exe /C POWERCFG.EXE /QUERY Portable/Laptop` puts "" puts meh case input when 1 then system('cmd.exe /C POWERCFG.EXE /CHANGE Portable/Laptop /processor-throttle-ac NONE') when 2 then system('cmd.exe /C POWERCFG.EXE /CHANGE Portable/Laptop /processor-throttle-ac ADAPTIVE') when 3 then `cmd.exe /C POWERCFG.EXE /CHANGE Portable/Laptop /processor-throttle-ac CONSTANT` end The problem is that the changes simply don't take place. If I run the same commands directly into a cmd.exe prompt, they work. It's very strange, but nothing works after the initial powercfg query. I feel like I'm missing something incredibly obvious. How can I get the above script to run correctly?

Can I give a name to the anonymous module after I've created it (just as if I'd typed "module ...")? How do I delete the anonymous module when I'm done with it, such that the constants it defines are no longer present?

    Ryan Tomayko touched off quite a fire storm with this post about using Unix process control commands. We should be doing more of this. A lot more of this. I'm talking about fork(2), execve(2), pipe(2), socketpair(2), select(2), kill(2), sigaction(2), and so on and so forth. These are our friends. They want so badly just to help us. I have a bit of code (a delayed_job clone for DataMapper that I think would fit right in with this, but I'm not clear on how to take advantage of the listed commands.     Can't find any tutorial for creating a simple questionnaire system on RoR (without using Finite State Machines). I think the Model is simple: Quizzes (have many Questions) Questions (belong to Quizzes, have many Choices, have one Answer) Choices (belong to Questions) Responses (belong to Users, belong to Questions) Users (have many Responses). User logs in (session is created), chooses some Quiz (Questions which belong to this Quiz are shown). User navigates through the Questions, makes his choice (Response), finishes the Quiz. Responses are compared with Answers. System shows some results. But as I'm new to Rails it is difficult for me to make it work properly. Any help? Maybe there is a tutorial where some similar app is created?

I'm using 1.9.2. obj = Object.new obj.instance_eval {@bar &&= @bar} # => nil, expected obj.instance_variables # => [], so obj has no @bar instance variable obj.instance_eval {@bar = @bar && @bar} # ostensibly the same as @bar &&= @bar obj.instance_variables # => [:@bar] # why would this version initialize @bar? For comparison, ||= initializes the instance variable to nil, as I'd expect: obj = Object.new obj.instance_eval {@foo ||= @foo} obj.instance_variables # => [:@foo], where @foo is set to nil Thanks!

Instead of doing : rake db:migrate:up VERSION=1, rake db:migrate:up VERSION=2, ... we can do : rake db:migrate!   • Trying to execute netdom.exe from a ruby script or IRB does nothing

    I'm trying to write a script that will rename a computer and join it to a domain, and was planning to call on netdom.exe to do the dirty work. However, trying to run this utility in the script (same results in irb) does absolutely nothing. No output, no execution. I tried with backticks and with the system() method. System() returns false for everything but system("netdom") (which returns true). Backticks never return anything but an empty string. I have verified that netdom runs and works in the environment the script will be running in, and I'm calling other command-line utilities earlier in the script that work (w32tm, getmac, ping). Here's the exact line that gets executed: `netdom renamecomputer %COMPUTERNAME% /NewName:#{newname} /force` FYI, This is windows 7 x64

    I'm trying to write a DSL that allows me to do Policy.name do author "Foo" reviewed_by "Bar" end The following code can almost process it: class Policy include Singleton def self.method_missing(name,&block) puts name puts "#{yield}" end def self.author(name) puts name end def self.reviewed_by(name) puts name end end Defining my method as class methods (self.method_name) i can access it using the following syntax: Policy.name do Policy.author "Foo" Policy.reviewed_by "Bar" end If i remove the "self" from the method names, and try to use my desired syntax, then i receive an error "Method not Found" in the Main so it could not find my function until the module Kernel. Its ok, i understand the error. But how can i fix it? How can i fix my class to make it work with my desired syntax that?

    So I am beginning to work with Rails and I get some of the concepts but am stuck on an important one. Let's say I have customers which has many jobs and jobs which belongs to customers. How would I go about creating a new job for a customer? I can create a link that goes to customers/1/jobs/new and I can grab the customer ID but how do I tell it that I am creating a job for customer 1? I know this is the most basic of things but I just need a push in the right direction.
