• MDX Studio download #mdx #ssas

  Short version: the latest available version of MDX Studio can be downloaded from http://www.sqlbi.com/tools/mdx-studio/ Long version: Last week Stacia Misner twitted that the online version of MDX Studio was no longer available. It was hosted on http://mdx.mosha.com. It was a sad news, and it is also not good that nobody is maintaining the desktop version of MDX Studio. The latest release is the 0.4.14 and as I am writing it is still available on a SkyDrive link provided by Mosha Pasumansky, who wrote MDX Studio. Mosha does not work in Microsoft now and the entire BI community hopes that somebody will continue its work on this product. Unfortunately, it cannot be published on CodePlex because of some IP restrictions. Only bad news? Well, I hope no. The first good news is that MDX Studio also works with Analysis Services 2012 in Multidimensional mode. The second news is that, after having checked that we can do that, we created a web page on SQLBI web site to download the latest available release of MDX Studio. I hope it will be necessary to update it in the future, by now it is just a way to simplify the finding and download of this precious tool, and to grant that it will not disappear in case the current SkyDrive using to host the download would be discontinued, like it happened to the MDX Studio online version. Now a question to the BI Community: I know that there was some content available regarding tutorial on MDX Studio. I’d like to gather it and to put all in a single place. • 500 - Internal server error on IIs 7.5 R2

  Hey all, i have a windows 2008 Web Edition R2 VPS and i seem to be having problems with it pointing to my domain name. I get this error when i visit my web address: Server Error 500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. I'm sure theres a configuration problem somewhere but i am currently unable to find it. And i'm also new at the windows server so any step-by-step help would be greatly appreciated! David

  i my company i had hosted a web page on live ip. external users can come to that page on server having IIS 7.. the problem is that on my page i placed three buttons one of internal exchange server , internal ftp server and internal Intranet. they are in internal network on different locations. i can come to main page but when i click the links the page not found error occurs. how can i reach all my internal servers that are running different services from internet through one page that can also authentication properly i am new please guide me step by step.

• Upgrading from 2005 to R2

  We're about to take the plunge and upgrade our servers from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 R2. Real world accounts of people upgrading to R2 are a bit hard to find so I thought it might be useful to blog what happens. (I don't count marketing 'case studies' that just say stuff like "The process was effortless and the upgrade will pay for itself by the end the week.") We're using the database engine, Analysis Services and Reporting Services so upgrading by a major version number was looking a bit daunting. I wasn't expecting much trouble on the engine side of things but, as most of the action in 2008 and R2 appears to have been on the Reporting and BI front, I expected to have quite a bit of work to do. But our testing so far has been one nice surprise after another: The 2005 backups restore cleanly onto R2. R2's BI Studio upgraded the Reporting and Analysis Services solutions without any issues. The cubes all deployed and processed just fine. R2 BI Studio interacts fine with TFS 2008 version control. I'll blog some more as things develop.

• SQL Server 2008 Express - "Best" backup solution?

  Hi! What backup solutions would you recommend when using SQL Server 2008 express? I'm pretty new to SQL Server, but as I'm coming from an MySql background i thought of setting up replication on another computer and just take x-copy backups of that server. But unfortanetly replication is not available in the express edition. The site is heavily accessed, so there has to be no delays och downtime. I'm also thinking of doing a backup twice a day or something. What would you recommend? I have multiple computers I can use, but don't know if that helps me since i'm using the express version. Thanks

  I have been blogging for almost 7 years and building video content for around 2 years. After spending so much time on blogging and creating video, I have got the quite a good idea what people would like to read and what people like to watch. However, there is one thing, which I am constantly struggling after almost a year and I would like to get your opinion about it. Though, this may look very simple to you but it is very crucial to me and I would like to know your opinion about it. I have been building video almost every week for my SQL in Sixty Seconds series and it has been quite popular. So far on my YouTube Channel there are over 2600 subscribers and over 250K views. Here is my problem – there are about 50+ videos on SQL in Sixty Seconds Series but the not every video is popular. There are a few videos which are extremely popular and there are videos which are absolutely struggling to get even single view. I have yet not figured out what people would love to watch on this channel. I noticed lots of people watching various videos but hardly anyone leaving comments or suggestions. At the end of the blog posts associated with the SQL in Sixty Seconds, I always ask which video people would love to watch, but I get a very low response over there too. What I wonder is that why such a low engagement of viewers/readers on the video blog posts where as the channel is success and lots of people are watching the video? • Lots of TIME_WAIT connections in netstat (Windows Server 2008)

  I'm having some issues on a Windows 2008 server with some network connections not going through. For instance, in a web application on the server, we need to open a socket connection to another server, and this fails sometimes with the following message: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted I looked up the error, which led me to this page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa560610(v=bts.20).aspx, which indicates that it might be TCP/IP port exhaustion. When I perform netstat -n, I get tons of TIME_WAIT connections on port 80. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

• NetApp and SQL Server?

  Do you have any good or bad experiences to share running SQL Server OLTP Systems on NetApp appliances? I have been working with a small, relatively low-volume cluster with a lower-end NetApp device, and I have found the environment to be generally unstable, at least compared to my experiences with other SANs, iSCSI arrays, and DAS setups. I struggle to believe that RAID DP and WAFL are more than fairy-dust technologies. A solution has been proposed to me that I just need a bigger, better NetApp, with PAM cards and other cool technology I've not heard of, and I feel like I would be better off spending a quarter of that on good direct-attached drives and a beefy server. At the same time, I feel that an Enterprise-class SAN should be something I can count on to be consistently a more stable, better performer than the less expensive solution I might propose. Are you a SQL Server DBA in an OLTP environment and love your NetApp? If you don't like them, why not?

• How can I map a Windows group login to the dbo schema in a database?

  I have a database for which I want to restrict access to 3 named individuals. I thought I could do the following: Create a local Windows group on the database server and add the named individuals to it. Create a Windows login in SQL Server mapped to the local Windows group. Map the login to the "dbo" schema in the database, so that the users can access all objects without having to qualify them with the schema name. When I try to do step 3, I get the following error: Msg 15353, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 An entity of type database cannot be owned by a role, a group, an approle, or by principals mapped to certificates or asymmetric keys. I have tried to do this via the IDE, the sp_changedbowner sproc, and the ALTER AUTHORIZATION command, and I get the same error each time. After searching MSDN and Google, I find that this restriction is by design. Great, that's useful. Can anyone tell me: Why this restriction exists? It seems very arbitrary. More importantly, can I accomplish my requirement some other way? Other info that might be pertinent: The server is fully up to date with service packs and hotfixes. All objects in the database are owned by the "dbo" schema, and it's not feasible to change that. The database is running in compatibility level 80, and it's not feasible to change that to 90 yet. I am free to make any other changes (within reason, depending on what they are).

  Performance tuning is an interesting concept and everybody evaluates it differently. Every developer and DBA have different opinion about how one can do performance tuning. I personally believe performance tuning is a three step process Understanding the Query Identifying the Bottleneck Implementing the Fix While, we are working with large database application and it suddenly starts to slow down. We are all under stress about how we can get back the database back to normal speed. Most of the time we do not have enough time to do deep analysis of what is going wrong as well what will fix the problem. Our primary goal at that time is to just fix the database problem as fast as we can. However, here is one very important thing which we need to keep in our mind is that when we do quick fix, it should not create any further issue with other parts of the system. When time is essence and we want to do deep analysis of our system to give us the best solution we often tend to make mistakes. Sometimes we make mistakes as we do not have proper time to analysis the entire system. Here is what I do when I face such a situation – I take the help of DB Optimizer. It is a fantastic tool and does superlative performance tuning of the system. Everytime when I talk about performance tuning tool, the initial reaction of the people is that they do not want to try this as they believe it requires lots of the learning of the tool before they use it. It is absolutely not true with the case of the DB optimizer. It is a very easy to use and self intuitive tool. Once can get going with the product, in no time. Here is a quick video I have build where I demonstrate how we can identify what index is missing for query and how we can quickly create the index. • Help setting up NSD daemon (DNS server)

  While searching for a secure dns server I came across the NSD project. I was really impressed by what seemed to me the best option out there that's open source. One problem thought their 'tutorial' is really not beginner friendly. I have basic DNS knoledge but what's in there is out of my league. I need to have multiple sites on this CentOS server I've recently got my hands on. They also need to receive email. Details: I have a master host and would love to set this in the way described in the rows that follow: masterhost.com -> ns1.masterhost.com mail.masterhost.com www.masterhost.com addonhost.com -> ns1.masterhost.com mail.masterhost.com www.addonhost.com And so on. • Windows Server 2008 repair logonui.exe

  I'm fairly certain some data on my server got corrupted and from a dialog box that popped up I think one of the things that got corrupted is logonui.exe I think this because while the server goes through BIOS and the windows loading splash screen, when it finished that it goes to a black screen with just a mouse cursor that I can move around. But most of the services come back up, for example: DNS, DHCP, DFS, and the print service all load up while it's sitting on the black screen. Is there anything I can do to repair the logon screen? Maybe copy a file off another copy of Server 2008, get something off the original media (which I have) or bring the system back to a previous restore point? Thanks! I'm in the weeds right now...

• Disable remote session timeout on Win Server 2012 R2

  For botting purposes, I have to keep my Win Server 2012 R2 running without logging-off after I disconnect from Remote Session. • Bind DHCP Server to Network Bridge

  My wireless router died, so I decided to route everything through my server. So I installed a second NIC and a wireless card to be my new network: 1 NIC to the Modem, 1 NIC to the switch, and the Wireless to... Well, wireless. Anyways, I got far enough to get DHCP to work on just ONE adapter when I used Internet Connection Sharing (I couldn't get RRAS set up for the life of me), then I decided to try bridging the wireless and second NIC. Now, the DHCP server won't bind to the bridge, but I can enter manual IP's in my clients and it'll connect to the Internet. I also tried changing my wireless adapter's IP to 192.168.0.2, and to 192.168.1.1 to try to set up a separate scope, but to no avail. Running Windows Server 2003

• Routing based on source address in Windows Server 2008 R2

  Hi, I'm implementing a direct routing load balanced solution using Windows Server 2008 R2 as back-end server. I've configured a loopback interface with the external IP address. This works, I am receiving packets with the external IP address and respond to them appropriately. However our infrastructure requires that traffic which is being load-balanced should go through a different gateway then any other traffic originating from the server, ie. updates etc. So basicly I need to route packets based on source address (external IP) to another gateway. The built-in Windows 'route' command allows routing based on destination address only. I've tried setting a default gateway on the loopback interface and mangled with weak/strong host send/receive parameters on the interfaces, however this didn't work. Is there any way around this, possibly using third party tools?

• customErrors="RemoteOnly" not working properly in Server 2008

  It would appear that on my brand new Windows Server 2008 with IIS7, customErrors is not working. We have customErrors set to RemoteOnly in the web.config on our Asp.Net sites and applications. However, no matter what we do, it would appear that our sites act like it's set to On and we can't get any detailed messages showing up on our applications when remoted into our servers. I'm not entirely sure how to trace where this is being overrided, or if there is something in the way the server is configured that would make the server think the request is internal? How does this actually resolve correctly, anyway? Any help is appreciated... Our network admin has added domains to our hosts file to direct applications to the IP address.

• Server 2008 Hard Faults

  Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds.   Today is 12/12/12 – I am not sure when will I write this kind of date again – maybe never. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime when we have the same date, month and year all have same digit. The goal of the video is to learn something in 1 minute. In our daily life we are all very busy and hardly have time for anything. No matter how much we are busy – we all have one minute of time.   I've started getting some errors in the App event log of one of our database servers (Windows 2003 & SQL Server 2005). The nightly full database backups are completing successfully however immediately after the job success is written to the event log there is a run of entries that say: SQLVDI: Loc=CVDS. Desc=Release(ClientAliveMutex). ErrorCode=(288)Attempt to release mutex not owned by caller. There's five of these logged - the server itself has more than 20 databases on it which are all backed up successfully. The server is backed up by Bacula using a VSS backup. Has anyone got any ideas what would be causing the errors? They seem to have started after a re-boot on Friday to install some patches which included KB960089. Edit: After getting the errors for a few days they've now stopped without any action on my part other than letting the backups continue as they were. It may be a coincidence but they stopped after Bacula completed its weekly full rather than the daily incremental backup.

• Expired Windows Server 2008 trial remote activation

  I have a remote server which has an expired license. I can't currently add the new license because of a licensing server error so I need to reboot the machine. My question is will I be able to remote desktop onto the machine and apply the new license or do I have to be physically at the server. I know an activation wizard usually appears and doesn't let you go any further but does this same wizard appear over remote desktop? I don't really want to reboot the machine only for it to not come up again.

• SQL SERVER – Sharing your ETL Resources Across Applications with Ease

  Frequently an organization will find that the same resources are used in multiple ETL applications, for example, the same database, general purpose processing logic, or file system locations.  Creating an easy way to reuse these resources across multiple applications would increase efficiency and reduce errors.  Moreover, not every ETL developer has the same skill set, and it is likely that one developer will be more adept at writing code while another is more comfortable configuring database connections.  Real productivity gains will come when these developers are able to work independently while still making their work available to others assigned to the same project.  These are the benefits of a centralized version control system. Of course, most version control systems could be used to store and serve files, but the real need is to store and serve entire ETL applications so that each developer’s ongoing work can immediately benefit from another developer’s completed work.  In other words, the version control system needs to be tightly integrated with the tools used to develop the ETL application. The following screen shot shows such a tool. Desktop ETL tool that tightly integrates with a central version control system Developers can checkout or commit entire projects or just a single artifact.  Each artifact may be managed independently so if you need to go back to an earlier version of one artifact, changes you may have made to other artifacts are not lost.  By being tightly integrated into the graphical environment used to create and edit the project artifacts, it is extremely easy and straight-forward to move your files to and from the version control system and there is no dependency on another vendor’s version control system.  The built in version control system is optimized for managing the artifacts of ETL applications. It is equally important that the version control system supports all of the actions one typically performs such as rollbacks, locking and unlocking of files, and the ability to resolve conflicts.  Note that this particular ETL tool also has the capability to switch back and forth between multiple version control systems. It also needs to be easy to determine the status of an artifact.  Not just that it has been committed or modified, but when and by whom.  Generally you must query the version control system for this information, but having it displayed within the development environment is more desirable. Who’s ETL tool works in this fashion?  Last month I mentioned the data integration solution offered by expressor software.  The version control features I described in this post are all available in their just released expressor 3.1 Standard Edition through the integration of their expressor Studio development environment with a centralized metadata repository and version control system. You can download their Studio application, which is free, or evaluate the full Standard Edition on your own hardware.  It may be worth your time. • partition alignment on fresh windows 2003 ent server

  Hi, I have this server which has it's physical disks in RAID 5 controlled by a 3com raid controller. size of the stripe unit is unknown for the moment (Can check tomorrow in the office). I need to install windows server 2003 ENT and create 2 partitions (OS, Data). I'd like to create the partitions before the installation on windows server. They have to be aligned properly. I have the newest version of gparted on a disc but I have no clue if this is the right tool. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks
