• Ubuntu 12.04 wired ethernet not working and wireless not working, How do I fix it?

  I am new to ubuntu. I recently installed the latest ubuntu for desktop from http://www.ubuntu.com/download. I was very excited to start using ubuntu until I booted the computer and saw that i couldn't connect to the internet at all. I have spent hours trying to figure this out. I keep running into people suggesting installing drivers etc. I have tried about everything and nothing seems to work. I have the ethernet cable connected to the computer but it doesn't recognize it. I ran the following: lspci | grep -i eth and I get this 09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5752 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02) Any help would be much appreciated. I am kind of bummed I have spent all this time tyring to get the internet to work and haven't even gotten to use the power of ubuntu Update copied from comment: Changing the Ethernet cable to a different one fixed the problem.

• Does GPG allow encryption of multiple files using a wild card like *filename*? [on hold]

  I am trying to automate the encryption of files on a windows server using a .bat file I created. As long as the filename is hardcoded in the .bat file this works. I want to encrypt numerous files using this .bat file but files are not encrypted when I use wildcards in the filename like filename.txt. I've been trying various version of the following command at the DOS prompt to no avail. All attempts have returned syntax for usage. C:\gpg -v --batch -- yes --always-trust -e -r <encryption-key> *part-of-the-file-name* usage: gpg [options] --encrypt [filename] I received the same usage message with this command: C:\gpg -v --batch -- yes --always-trust -e -r --encrypt part-of-the-file-name I tried without the -v and some of the other options and I still received the same message. I have spent hours today searching the internet for an answer and I can't find one anywhere? Please help.

• Problems with makeObjectsPerformSelector inside and outside a class?

  A friend and I are creating a card game for the iPhone, and in these early days of the project, I'm developing a Deck class and a Card class to keep up with the cards. I'm wanting to test the shuffle method of the Deck class, but I am not able to show the values of the cards in the Deck class instance. The Deck class has a NSArray of Card objects that have a method called displayCard that shows the value and suit using console output(printf or NSLog). In order to show what cards are in a Deck instance all at once, I am using this, [deck makeObjectsPerformSelector:@selector(displayCard)], where deck is the NSArray in the Deck class. Inside of the Deck class, nothing is displayed on the console output. But in a test file, it works just fine. • How can I make sound over hdmi in kubuntu work?

  I have used a hdmi cable to connect my lcd (which is connected with my speakers) with my nvida 275 gtx grafic card. I can not get the sound output to work. The hardware itself is working probably - I tested it under windows. Currently I am running Kubuntu 9.10 64 with Nvidia 190.53. The sound output worked fine before I installed the hdmi connection.   This question already has an answer here: Is my mobile AMD card being used? 2 answers OS: Windows 8 CPU: Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 3635QM GPU 1 : Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU 2 : AMD Radeon™ HD 8870M other info: System Spects Problem: im unsure that CCC is using AMD card instead of Intel's, i have encountered several issues since updating to 8.1 and i don't know what to do What happened: Installed 8.1 patch first day After 1 minute of use, BBSOD, windows never loaded again System restore wouldnt recognize 8.0 restore points i did a system reset to windows 8 since the laptop was only 3 weeks old System Broke, it did restore to factory BUT kept the registry almost intact, i had to install almost everything again, since the factory drivers where working with the updated one's registry and several problems CCC Broke too <- What i've already done Installing new drivers on top of old ones didnt work, so i used AMD uninstaller first Uninstalled and Re-installed Intel's HD Graphics Driver Tried to install mobile center, but AMD told me that it wasnt compatible (even if thats the only driver that they provide via their page as seen Here) Tried to use Auto-Detect, couldnt install driver because card was disabled because it didnt have the drivers... (see what they did here?) Had to use a workaround with Samsung Update, the driver didnt appear as download so had to use search and downloaded the driver manually. Now the graphic card appears on device manager and catalyst but as 8800 series (not exact model), and cant check the card with neither dxdiag/GPU-z/HWMonitor when right-clicking on CCC only Intel card appears launching a game and using as "high performance" would speed it up a little but i cant be sure How to verify its working properly? HWMonitor wont show AMD card even when set to high performance Latest GPU-Z wont work because a problem with Intel's, and legacy ones wont either what can I do now? • How to set up multiple video cards in Windows XP

  All I am trying to do is run a three monitor setup, two widescreens on the good card at high res and a third smaller monitor at 1024x768 that I watch continuously updating info in. I have a Dell Vostro 200 with an HIS Radeon HD 4670 video card in the PCI-e slot. I need an additional video card that will work in an available PCI slot. I Had a Nvidia GeForce 5200 that was installed but due to what I'm assuming was a compatible driver issue (because it was Nvidia not ATI) it wouldn't run at more than 640x480 4bit color when installed simultaneously with the HIS card. Previously I used the Nvidia with the onboard Intel video to run a third monitor, but now that the HSI uses PCI-e the onboard has to be disabled. I tried a Radeon 9200 PCI card that I found (microsoft made I think) with it and only that or the HIS card could be enabled at the same time. When both were in the HIS card said "The device cannot start". SO, based on the fact that I got the Nvidia to work (although very poorly) with the new HIS Radeon HD 4670 PCI-e I know it's possible, just don't know what type of card I need to use. Any ideas?

  I have Ubuntu 14.04 64bit dual booted. When I connect something on front audio jack then rear audio is not working. I have tried changing analolog-output-headphones.conf file. After changing that alsamixer showing that both centre and surround not muted with full volum. • Better way to set up samba bridge?

  I have an old ubuntu laptop hooked up to between my wireless network and a wired media player box. I had previously shared my wireless network connection so the media player had internet access (ie. via nat) because it was a different subnet it could not access the file shares on the wireless network. To get around this I mounted the drives from the wireless network on the laptop and re-shared them with samba. This worked ok but had some drawbacks, it seemed slow and if network computers were turned off when the laptop rebooted I had to manually mount the shares. I've just re-installed with the latest ubuntu and was wondering if there is a better way to do this. Is there some way to bridge so the media player appears to be on the wireless network? Would this give better performance? Any other options? I'm also thinking there might be some samba options that could buffer files?

  Ok this is my problem... My problem begins while ago when I installed ubuntu 10.10. (is the same with 11.04,11.10...) My wireless card is disabled if the power cord is unplugged, and the only way to fix this is rebooting my pc WITH the power cord plugged and if I use lspci command, it doesn't show me the wireless card. is like if I've removed the wireless board from my laptop port. I've searched a lot of solutions for bcmw4311 issues, but none of them fix my problem because when apply one of the fixes, if I unplug the cord, my wireless card it just gone away... I have dual boot on my pc(w7,ubuntu), I've tried with full installation just to see if this is the problem, but not, is the same. On windows all work correctly with and without power cord.. so this is not a hardware problem, is more like a kernel problem. anyway I can use wireless with power cord plugged, but c'mon this is a laptop not a desktop pc XD haha any help is welcome

On the one side the game should contain player vs. player card games. I booted into single user mode and backed it up via cd / sudo -i tar cvpzf backup.tgz --exclude=/proc --exclude=/dev --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/backup.tgz --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/sys / 3 . I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 1204 on my new laptop (It is Dell) 4 . I boot into single user mode 5 . I backup the existing /boot directory 6 . I untar my backup to restore on to the Dell sudo tar xvfpz backup.tgz -C / 7 . I restore the previous /boot directory again 8 . I boot it up, and my profile and settings are loaded ok but, Ubuntu shows that there is no Sound Card.. I cannot use unity to drag and change volume. I noticed that the network card also doesnt work. ** How do you make ubuntu recognize changed hardware, if the hardware is already configured for a different laptop? Does anyone know?**

• Why no "da-doomp" (disconnect notification sound) sometimes when unplugging wireless mouse receiver?

  Sometimes (maybe one case in 3), when I unplug the wireless mouse receiver on my Sony VGN-CS215J laptop, there is no "da-doomp" sound, even after a minute or two. And if I plug the receiver back in there is no corresponding "du-dump" sound and the mouse is still (immediately) "live". This can happen when the activity light is out and there's nothing obviously going on -- it's not simply that the box is too busy. Other times one gets the expected behavior (and usually I get the correct behavior if I plug the receiver back in a few seconds and then unplug it after a "failure"). The reason this is significant is that if I get no "da-doomp" then the laptop will not sleep properly -- it will go to sleep initially, but then reawaken a few minutes later inside my laptop case and proceed to run the battery down (and no doubt overheat the unit). Any ideas?

• Multiple urls to 1 website with a wild card ssl.

  Hi, At the moment, we have 27 single sites in IIS6, all with their own urls, all with the same subdomain, e.g. https://company1.mycompany.com https://company2.mycompany.com etc., etc. To further complicate things, there is 1 wild card certificate which deals with the subdomain *.mycompany.com and is assigned to each website. All these websites run under the same codebase. We want to consolidate all these websites into 1 website. Are there any issues with having a large number of host headers running under 1 IIS6 site or is there a better way of configuring the site? Thanks Paul

• How can I switch between the HDMI and DVI outputs of my graphics card?

  I've got an Nvidia GTX 560ti card which currently I've got my 2 monitors hooked up to using the 2 DVI ports. However its got a mini-HDMI port which I've plugged a HDMI cable in (with mini adapter) and lead it into my TV which is across the room. I'm hoping to be able to toggle between the HDMI output and the DVI outputs, however I'm not sure how I'd go about this, Could somebody please point me in the right direction, I'm not really worried about having all 3 on at the same time so that isn't a problem, but if its possible then I'll do that.

  Problem: cant connect to internet with my new installation of windows xp sp3. Details: I have ubuntu in pc that worked with wired internet. i format all disk and install windows xp sp3. i have auto internet that defined in my router - other computers have internet. I run diagnoze of ie and get: windows could not detect any wired or wireless network cards installed on your machine In Device Manager i have only 1394 Adapter I dont see any internet adapters. • Is it possible to use Logmein to connect to a sleeping (Mac) computer on a wireless network?

  I'm using logmein to access my Mac. So I have the local logmein app running on my MacBook Pro, which is on my home wireless network. I access it either from the website (www.logmein.com) or the Logmein Ignition Apps on the iphone or ipad. My problem is that I have to set my MacBook Pro to not sleep at all when plugged in to make this a practical solution, because logmein cant seem to wake it up. I did change the settings in System Preferences to allow "Wake from Lan", but it seems like this won't work with a a Wifi connection. Am I missing anything? Assuming I'm not, is it bad for my computer to basically leave it running and not asleep most of the time?

• New standalone ESXi 5 deployments - USB versus SD card?

  Now that the old full VMWare ESX with service console is no longer, I'm redeploying some standalone ESXi servers. I'm using HP ProLiant ML and DL G6 and G7 servers. Does it make more sense to utilize the internal USB port for ESXi or the internal SD card slot? I'm using the HP ESXi 5 build, but am not sure what the recommended practice is. Any recommendations on cards/USB drives for this purpose? BTW - these will be all-in-one storage servers with the onboard disk storage presented via PCIe passthrough.
