  I started a project a while back using the following architecture from Adobe Developer Article talking about Creating marketing platforms in Flex. I did my first set of coding locally forgetting that my server did not handle Tomcat. So I said okay, and cut some corners and then some other limitation came up and I cut some more corners. Eventually for a good week or two, it was trying to get the project working with making the ends meet. Layers started to merge. In the end I used a PureMVC (Presentation/Client) - ZendAMF (Communication) - MySql (Data) Layout. It worked but I never felt as though I had some layer just to take care of all the SQL calls to the data.It just felt hacked together So should I keep the above setup and just start from the presentation layer and move downwards like they said in the article or is there a better layering (based on a hosting plan that does not handle Java) I could accomplish ? NOTE: I would just ask the adobe guys but they barely reply on their site. Thanks !

  I am using CSS3 transitions on my site and the -webkit- seems to be working, whilst the -moz- is not.   I have read this article from highscalability about stackoverflow and other large websites. Many large high traffic .NET sites such as plentyoffish.com, mysapce and SO all use .NET technologies and use SQL SERver for their database. In the article it says SO said As you add more and more database servers the SQL Server license costs can be outrageous. So by starting scale up and gradually going scale out with non-open source software you can be in a world of financial hurt. I don't understand why don't high traffic .NET sites convert their databases to MySQL as it is waay cheaper then SQL Server

  Hi all, I am attempting to learn about creating windows in c++, I have looked at an article about creating a wrapper class but I don't really understand it. So far I know that you can't have a class method WndProc (I dont know why) but honestly, that is all. Can somebody give an explanation, also explaining the reinterpret_cast? Here is the article. • How to decouple an app's agile development from a database using BDUF?

  G'day, I was reading the article "Database as a Fortress" by Dan Chak from the excellent book "97 Things Every Software Architect Should Know" (sanitised Amazon link) which suggests that databases should not be designed using an agile approach. There's an SO question on agile approaches and databases "Agile development and database changes" which has some excellent answers covering agile development approaches. In fact, one of the answers supplies a brilliant idea of what's needed for each update of the DB. ;-) But after reading Dan Chak's article, I am left wondering if an agile approach is really suitable for large scale systems. This of course leads on to the question of how best to decouple an agile approach for the application that is interacting with the BDUF database design without adding complicated translation layers in the final design employed? • Best way to remove CSS rounded-corner halo?

  I'm getting a tiny rounded corner halo effect that I'd like to get rid of. In this example, look for the effect in the red circle. I seem to recall a while back reading an article on just this problem. Anyone have a link to that article? Otherwise, any good ways to get rid of the halo? It is being caused because the dl has all four corners rounded. This allows the bottom of the dl to be rounded. The dt sits over the dl and has its top left and top right corners rounded. But there is a slight overflow of the dl curve behind the dt curve, causing the halo. My solution is to increase the border-radius of the dl so that it is hidden behind the dt corner. But it seems like a hack and adds a fair amount more CSS. I'm wondering if there is a better solution.

  Hey Everyone, For a long time I have been using XHTML1.1 because I thought I was cool (yeah right). However, today I read Ian Hickson's Article about how everyone uses the wrong MIME type with XHTML and it opened my eyes a lot. I happen to be one of those people who are serving XHTML with text/html MIME, because like a lot of people, W3C says its "ok" to serve it this way. At the top of that article he says that "now" he would serve it using the HTML5 doctype (!DOCTYPE HTML). What are your thoughts about doing this? If I did not use unsupported functionality, would it be ok? What would the MIME type be in this case? Thanks for any help, Metropolis

• Drupal - Selected Node Highlighting in Views

  Drupal Question: Does anyone have a method of using Views and highlighting a selected/current node. So for example: I have a list of articles under a heading: 2009 Articles Dog Training Cat Cleaning Snake Wrangling The 3 articles are made from the view (ie: latest articles from 2009)... as the user makes new articles, they are automatically added into this view by title. I now need to find a way, that if a user clicks on say CAT CLEANING.... and the cat cleaning article appears, the CAT CLEANING in the view becomes bold (or some CSS indication it's the current article.) I know this is pretty easy with MENU's, But I don't want to force a user to add new articles into a menu. Thanks alot, JD

• C/C++ enum and char * array

  Ran accross the following code in an article and didn't think it was standard C/C++ syntax for the char* array. As a test, both Visual C++ (visual studio 2005) and C++ Builder Rad XE both reject the 2nd line. Without using #defines, anyone have any tricks/tips for keeping enums and a string array sort of in sync without resorting to STL ? More of a curiosity question. enum TCOLOR { RED, GREEN, BLUE }; char *TNCOLOR[] = { [RED]="Red", [GREEN]="Green", [BLUE]="Blue" }; as an aside, the article this came from is quite old and I believe this might work under GCC but have not tested.

• Styling a list as tabs with a background overflowing into content

  I couldn't think of any better way to name this question, but I'll explain. I have a mediawiki website with a background pattern (like parchment) behind the articles. At the top of each article I want to have tabs like wikipedia does (with page | talk | edit etc links). The problem is, the tabs should seamlessly fit with the article's background and I can't figure out if this is actually possible. The way I was trying to do it was positioning the list inside the actual content div and give the <li items a transparent background, but as far as I can see there's no way to color the rest of the <ul's background black without affecting the <li's in there. • Finding the most frequent subtrees in a collection of (parse) trees

  I have a collection of trees whose nodes are labelled (but not uniquely). Specifically the trees are from a collection of parsed sentences (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treebank). I wish to extract the most common subtrees from the collection - performance is not (yet) an issue. I'd be grateful for algorithms (ideally Java) or pointers to tools which do this for treebanks. Note that order of child nodes is important. EDIT @mjv. We are working in a limited domain (chemistry) which has a stylised language so the varirty of the trees is not huge - probably similar to children's readers. Simple tree for "the cat sat on the mat". <sentence> <nounPhrase> <article/> <noun/> </nounPhrase> <verbPhrase> <verb/> <prepositionPhrase> <preposition/> <nounPhrase> <article/> <noun/> </nounPhrase> </prepositionPhrase> </verbPhrase> </sentence> Here the sentence contains two identical part-of-speech subtrees (the actual tokens "cat". "mat" are not important in matching). So the algorithm would need to detect this. Note that not all nounPhrases are identical - "the big black cat" could be: <nounPhrase> <article/> <adjective/> <adjective/> <noun/> </nounPhrase> The length of sentences will be longer - between 15 to 30 nodes. I would expect to get useful results from 1000 trees. If this does not take more than a day or so that's acceptable. Obviously the shorter the tree the more frequent, so nounPhrase will be very common. EDIT If this is to be solved by flattening the tree then I think it would be related to Longest Common Substring, not Longest Common Sequence. But note that I don't necessarily just want the longest - I want a list of all those long enough to be "interesting" (criterion yet to be decided).

According to documentation, in owned one-to-many relationships, order of elements in "owner" object collection is determined either by automatically created index field, or by information given in explicit ordering clause. I could not find answer neither in JDO relationships article, nor in Data Classes article :(

I want to implement the method described at http://www.packtpub.com/article/jquery-table-manipulation-part2 but I haven't figured out where to put the initial jQuery call (eg: $(document).ready(function() {...}); Like I said, I'm new to jQuery...
