  • Gray Progress Bar in Macbook Boot caused by Partition Fault

    Here's my problem: When I try to load my macbook it shows the gray progress bar. It takes a while to fill the whole progress and after it macbook just shuts down. I tried to boot from recovery partition and run Disk Utility to repair it. Disk Utility showed my "Macintosh HD" in a gray color and failed to repair it. I thought all my data was lost, but then I tried the following: So I booted into ubunto from live usb and it successfully mounted my macintosh hd hfs+ partition. Parted shows me the following partitions on my disk: Disk /dev/sda: 500GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 20.5kB 210MB 210MB fat32 EFI System Partition boot 2 210MB 499GB 499GB hfs+ Macintosh HD 3 499GB 500GB 650MB hfs+ Recovery HD Seems legit except for FAT32 for EFI System Partition. Since all my data is okay and backed up what should I do to recover the system. I don't really want to reinstall all the system though I believe there's a command to make it allright in linux. The file has 90K rows and sometimes because of bad data package fails but it insert the partial records before it fails. What I need is if insertion fails at any time between, no records should be inserted into DB, rollback everything. how can I put it in transaction?

  • Limit the amount of data that can be stored in a folder on Ubuntu Server 12.04?

    I'm in the process of building my first server. It's up, it's running, I'm transferring copious amounts of data away from my horrid little Drobo (DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE, EVER). However, there's one thing I have yet to do: I'd like to set it up for Time Machine backups as well. I've seen all the guides and I have some idea of how to set the whole thing up, but the issue is that Time Machine will just fill up as much space as you let it. So if I let it lose in my 8 TB zpool it'll slowly consume every last available sector. This, of course, is not acceptable. I have a folder at the root of my zpool called "ZFS Time Machine" and I would like to limit it to 1 TB (all I need for backup purposes). However, I have no idea how to do that. Is this possible? I can continue using a small external hard drive attached via FW800 if I have to but I'd much rather prefer putting everything on my server.

  • undelete big files - mission impossible?

    Hi, I've accidentaly deleted outlook.pst (6.7GB) file, while there was only 400MB free space left on primary NTFS partition (winxp). I've tried several recovery tools to get this file back. "Ontrack Easy Recovery Pro" found 0 pst files (complete scan mode), while "Recover My Files" in sector scan mode found 5 pst's, but 4 of them of sizes from 3 to 28 KB, while the 5th one - 1Gb. I've managed to succesfuly recover 1Gb pst file, which was 1 year old copy (the one used after the latest windows reinstall). Now, I'm frustrated and confused Why 1 year old file was succesfuly recovered if there were only 400MB left on primary partition? Where's 6.7GB file gone? I did some reading (i.e. here), and it seems that there's almost no probability to retrieve the file I'm looking for, but wait - none of recovery tools i've used found zero-sized pst file, moreover - if due to fragmentation a file might be corrupted - we could use scanpst.exe to fix some errors and survive with 10 or 100 emails missing - whatever. Could you please recommend some more sophisticated recovery tools for this particular task? Appretiate your help - thanks in advance

  • Access Windows Boot Manager selector when timeout is set to 0?

    I've installed Wubi onto a Windows Vista computer. I've also set the boot timeout to 0: bcdedit /timeout 0 However, now I can't figure out how to get the menu to come up at all! I read on the internets that I had to hold F8 or space when starting up, but they doesn't seem to do anything. Is there a different key or setting I've overlooked? The computer itself is a Dell that's a few months old. The keyboard is USB, but I don't think that's the problem as I can get into the BIOS just fine. Maybe I'm doing it wrong? Am I supposed to hold the keys or rapidly tap them (I've tried both)?     I am passing the reference of name to *mod_name*, I modify the referenced object from within the method but the change is not visible outside of the method, if I am referring to the same object from all locations how come the value is different depending on where I reference it? name = "Jason" puts name.object_id #19827274 def mod_name(name) puts name.object_id #19827274 name = "JasonB" end puts name.object_id #19827274 puts name #Jason String might be a bad example, but I get the same result even if I use a Fixnum.

    Greetings all, I've written software in the past that uses a stack to check for balanced equations, but now I'm asked to write a similar algorithm recursively to check for properly nested brackets and parenthesis. Good examples: () [] () ([]()[]) Bad examples: ( (] ([)] Suppose my function is called: isBalanced. Should each pass evaluate a smaller substring (until reaching a base case of 2 left)? Or, should I always evaluate the full string and move indices inward?

    Is there a way to estimate the offset from GMT (or time zone) from a latitude/longitude? I've seen geonames, but this would need to work long term and we don't really want to rely on a web service. It'd just be used for determining whether to display "today" or "tonight" when giving information to various users so it wouldn't need to be too accurate (an hour or two off wouldn't be bad).

  • Warning for "Reallocated Event Count" S.M.A.R.T. attribute with a new/unused drive. How serious is t

    I've just looked at the health status of my old 2,5 inch 500 Gb Fujitsu drive with a popular "HD Tune" utility. It shows a warning for the "Reallocated Event Count" property. How serious is that? The thing is that the drive is practically new. I pulled it out of a new laptop over a year ago and never used it since. Right now it only has 53 "Power On" hours which sounds about right since I only had it running a few evenings overnight before switching it for something more performant. Does this warning indicate that the drive is likely to fail some time in the future? I'm somewhat perplexed since the drive is effectively unused. What is more, I have arranged with somebody to buy off this drive since I don't really need. It is 12,5 mm thick (with 3 plates) meaning it doesn't fit into an external enclosure which makes it quite useless to me. Can I give away the drive without having it on my conscience or better cancel the deal? In other words, can the drive be used safely for years to come or better throw it away? I'm running a sector test now to see if there are any real problems. Will post the results as soon as they're available.

  • pdftotext can't find any of the files to convert when called within a python script

    i have a python script which keeps crashing on: subprocess.call(["pdftotext", pdf_filename]) the error being: OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory the absolute path to the filename (which i am storing in a log file as i debug) is fine; on the command line, if i type pdftotext <pdf_filename_goes_here> it works for any of the alledgedly bad file names. but when called using subprocess in python i keep getting that error. what is going on???

    Hello all, I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed and used to dual-boot Fedora, but I replaced Fedora with Pardus. After the install, I went into ubuntu, and did a sudo update-grub. It detected my Pardus 2011 install there. When I rebooted, it did not show up in my grub2 menu however. I went back to Ubuntu and did it again...then checked the grub.cfg, and it is not there. I have read that Pardus uses a grub legacy. How can I get Pardus into my grub2 menu?
