• How does Google show a web page's recipe photo inline with the search results? How'd they do that?

  On Google, if you search for "chana dal recipe," in the middle of the search results page you'll see one search result with an image of the meal, taken from the underlying web page. It's the only one. Did: A) Google someone magically isolate the one image on the web page which summarized the recipe, --or-- B) did the webmaster/page author somehow designate and promote that particular image so that Google would inline it in the search results?

• Where is the line drawn with domain names which include a trademark?

  A search on google for "iphone developer" turns up loads of websites which have "iphone" in them, a trademarked name by Apple. So I'm led to believe that having a domain such as iphonedeveloper.com is ok? Well, you're still using Apple's trademark, but it would be hard to brand yourself otherwise. You're an IPHONE DEVELOPER... right? Well, what if I want to provide a website where users pay to get a list of the best offers from Ebay? I might have a domain like ebaydeals.com (I don't... i'm just speculating!). Now I've heard that places like Ebay are really hot on the trigger and fire out emails to people who register domains like that straight away. But whats the difference? In both cases I'm making money from the trademark, effectively, so is it just down to how lenient the company who owns the trademark is? Or are there rules? Is there a specific "line" you don't cross? Thanks

  I'm working on a website where users will be able to register and provide information about their location. In order to prevent users from inputting incorrect data, we don't want users to provide free-text information but instead choose from predefined values as much as possible. We believe there are 2 ways of providing those values: use an API to an external service provider or create your own local database. APIs Some resources: - https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/ads-api/get-autocomplete-data/ - http://developer.yahoo.com/geo/geoplanet/ Pros: -accuracy and completeness of data. -no maintenance related to update of data as this it taken care of by API provider. -easier/faster to get started (no need to create local database, just implement API). Cons: -degradation of performance when availability issues with external API. -outage due to changes to the external API (until your code is updated to reflect those changes). -lock-in with external provider. • Does a "nofollow" attribute on a link prevent URL discovery by search engines?

  I know that nofollow prevents link juice from being passed across a link. But if search engine robots discover a link with a nofollow on it, will they add that link to their crawl queue? In other words, if I create a link to a brand new page and put a rel=nofollow attribute on that link, will it prevent search engine bots (particularly Googlebot) from crawling the page. (Assuming that this link remains the only link into that page.) I've read conflicting reports about this over the years and I'm looking for authoritative references about the current state of affairs. Official statements from Google or published results of independent testing would be ideal.

• Why does Google report a soft 404 when I redirect to the signup page?

  In the last month, I've got an increased number of "soft 404" errors reported by Google webmaster tools which actually work well for users. Configuration (maybe useless): I have a website built with rails 3.1 Authentication is handled by the gem Devise Problem: On this page http://en.bemyboat.com/yacht-charter/9965-sailboat-beneteau-oceanis-43 Click on "Ask a Boat request" (a simple form, in GET to: http://en.bemyboat.com/boat_requests/new/9965) You are redirected with the HTTP status 302 to sign in You are then sent back to the new page if successfully sign in. Google tells me that the link on "ask a boat request" returns a soft 404. I can't make this form in "POST" (which will solve the problem) because we need to automatically redirect users back to the page after sign in. (the Gem Devise memorizes the "get" link.) To simplify, the question is: How to protect a private page with authentication, reached with a simple "GET" and not to be penalized by Google as a "soft 404".

• How long does it take for Google to re-index pages or update the link titles?

  On one of our classified sites, when doing site:[mysite.com] in Google, the link text is simply [product name] - [mysite.com], where as it should read [product name] classifieds for sale in... I suspect that the site map may have been submitted when we just had [product name], and updated the page titles later. However, it has been a couple of weeks that I have confirmed the longer page titles, and still they appear shortened in organic results. How can I get this looking right in Google's organic results?

• Do Google's feed statistics include former users?

  I'm currently not using any sort of fancy stat tracking software such as feedburner, but I occasionally look at Google's stats in their Webmaster Tools just to get a rough idea of whether the number of subscribers is going up or down. This only gives the number of users subscribed through Google products, as they explain in their help documents: Subscriber stats display the number of Google users who have subscribed to your feeds using any Google product (such as Reader, iGoogle, or Orkut). Because users can subscribe to feeds using many different aggregators or RSS readers, the actual number of subscribers to your site may be higher. I used to use Google Reader very regularly but haven't opened it in a while now. The way I understand it, this will mean that even though I haven't touched any of those feeds in a long time I'm still technically subscribed to them and will therefore be included in Google's statistic. Is this correct? Also since Google runs Feedburner, does this have any effect on their stats as well?

• Understanding CTR in Google Webmaster Tools

  I've got a site that's showing a 9% CTR for a phrase in Google Webmaster Tools, but the average position for my site is 14th (this includes 7 local results for this phrase). I was a little confused as to what the CTR actually meant, is it : for each person who searches for that phrase 9% of them click my site. or for each person who actually sees my site in the search results 9% of them click through (bearing in mind 14th is high on page 2 when the local listings are used).

How would I set up an anonymous email forwarder, so I can give them a valid email address, and kill that email address if the company turns into an evil spammer?   It was brought to my attention that if you search for the name of one of our directors (with the intent to find there profile page on our site) They come up as the first link in most search engines as you would expect but the link text is just pure spam. the three search string I have tested on Google, Bing, Ask, and Yahoo have all returned similar results. • Create speed baseline for local web file

  Is there any tool or method that will load a localhost page a number of times, and return the averaged data for load times, onload events, Dom ready events, etc? I'd like to work on page speed optimization, but need a baseline before I begin. I have used both Google analytics and Webmaster tools, but I'd like an automated solutions that runs locally. My ideal solution would be a program or script that would take the path/file, number of iterations, and then take several minutes to load the page n times without cache and crunch numbers to create a baseline.

  I have a domain name tradespring.net, and www.tradespring.net that redirect to my heroku app with a CNAME record. However when I first try to access these sites it gives me a malicious warning This is probably not the site you are looking for! blah blah blah then "proceed anyways" or "back to safety" Its because my browser realizes that it is redirecting. How can I make sure anyones browser (not just my browser) trusts this site and my heroku app? I dont think i need an SSL certificate because this site is not sending sensitive info (credit card info, ect.).

• When clientTransferProhibited is off to transfer a domain name, couldn't the name be stolen?

  I'd like to transfer a domain from one registrar (Key-systems) to another registrar (OVH). I don't really understand the procedure and I'm a bit confused... I read everywhere that clientTransferProhibited prevents people from stealing your domain name. Now apparently during the course of transferring my domain from Key-systems to OVH, I'll to change clientTransferProhibited so that the transfer is allowed. Wouldn't my domain then become "stealable" during some amount of time? (a few hours / days / week)

• RewriteRule not working at server level?

  I wanted to forbid some robots from doing certain things to my websites and decided to add a RewriteRule for that purpose. The rule works when put in one of my <VirtualHost *:80> tag and looks like this: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} libwww-perl RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} POST RewriteRule . - [F,L] However, I wanted to apply that to all my websites instead of just one of them. So with the newest version of Apache2 settings, I decided to put that code in the security.conf file. This file is defined under /etc/apache2/conf-available/... (and yes, I have a softlink from the /etc/apache2/conf-enabled/... directory.) However, if the definition is only in the conf-available/security.conf files, it somehow gets ignored. From the documentation, it says that these Rewrite* commands all work at server level! Any idea of what I would be missing?

  Our website is set up to direct all traffic for www.example.com to example.com with a line in the htaccess file. With google analytics new in page analytics feature we are thinking of removing the line and allowing people to visit www.example.com as well to play with the new features. My question is this. How will this change affect our analytics data. -will nothing change and we can start using the new feature with our existing data -Are the two domains tracked separately and we will have to start over with www.example .com Any help would be great, as I can find nothing on googles help site covering this. • Customising Google Maps breaks highway label blocks

  I'm trying to customise a Google map to use shades of a particular colour. It's working nicely except the blocks that contain major road names / numbers is illegible. I've figured out how to target styles to those elements, but setting the 'color' value sets both text and background to that colour. • Could the rel="author" just be a username?

  I want to use rel="author", however the type of blog I run is about a game, and doesn't relate to my real identity. I'm more known for my screen name, so would this still be okay to use for the rel="author" tag? For example, if my Google+ account is for my user, and not for myself, could I still use it within the rel="author" tag? I don't want to get penalized in any sort of way. My main reason to do this, is to improve click through rate, and just make my blog post sections look better in the searches.
