• Need help with events in COM in pure C++!

  Hello, guys! Very important question: Please, look at my project (300Kb). I can`t use MFC/ATL, pure C++ only. I have COM library (niapi.dll), but no sources/headers available, dll only. There is class for connecting to server (NiApi::SrvrSession), class has login event handler (NiApi::SrvrSession::OnLogin). I used #import "NiApi.dll" to generate wrappers/information, then ISrvrSessionPtr session(L"NiApi.SrvrSession"); to create object, then trying session->put_OnLogin(); to assign events, but there is no one put_On or such member. niapi.tlh have _ISrvrSessionEvents struct inside, but it have no relations with SrvrSession. I need to use events from NiApi::SrvrSession for handling connection status. Please help or my boss kill me! (sorry for broken english, I read better than speak;)

• Barcode field length

  I'm writing some attendance software. Each member will have an ID card with a barcode which they will use to sign in to events. How long should the barcode field be in my database? I'd like to accept Code 39 and Code 128 barcodes. I know these are variable length codes, so what should I set the max length to? Thanks! EDIT: My clients will be using a variety of third-party barcode printing tools.

• In C#: How to declare a generic Dictionary with a type as key and an enumeration of that type as val

  Hi all, I want to declare a dictionary that stores typed IEnumerable's of a specific type, with that exact type as key, like so: (Edited to follow johny g's comment) private IDictionary<Type, IEnumerable<T>> _dataOfType where T: BaseClass; //does not compile! The concrete classes I want to store, all derive from BaseClass, therefore the idea to use it as constraint. The compiler complains that it expects a semicolon after the member name. If it would work, I would expect this would make the later retrieval from the dictionary simple like: IEnumerable<ConcreteData> concreteData; _sitesOfType.TryGetValue(typeof(ConcreteType), out concreteData); How to define such a dictionary?

  Many times I have member functions that copy parameters into object's fields. For Example: class NouveauRiches(object): def __init__(self, car, mansion, jet, bling): self.car = car self.mansion = mansion self.jet = jet self.bling = bling Is there a python language construct that would make the above code less tedious? One could use *args: def __init__(self, *args): self.car, self.mansion, self.jet, self.bling = args +: less tedious -: function signature not revealing enough. need to dive into function code to know how to use function -: does not raise a TypeError on call with wrong # of parameters (but does raise a ValueError) Any other ideas? (Whatever your suggestion, make sure the code calling the function does stays simple)

• Convert unstructured SVN folders to trunk/branches style and retain history?

  I have a SVN repository which is currently structured like so: /versions /1.0.0 /1.0.1 /1.0.2 /1.1.0 /(etc) What happened here is that when it was time to start a new release, a team member would make a copy of the previous version's folder and rename that folder; then add/commit that new folder into SVN. As a consequence, all of the revision history for a given version-folder is limited just to changes made in that version-folder. SVN thinks that each file in each version-folder was created anew at the time of version-folder creation. So what I'd like to do is convert this series of folders into a traditional trunk/branches/tag SVN structure. Is it possible to somehow "reconcile" the revision histories of each of these versioned folders back into one common revision-history tree?

Business Background Imagine a Bus. It has a lot of Stations, MainStations, and 2 TerminalStations. So Line is between 2 Stations, PoliLine is between 2 MainStations, and SuperPoliLine is between 2 TerminalStations. All "lines" are "Segments", but only the distance A-B between 2 stations - Line can be defined.

• Facebook page linking to external site sign-up process, capture permission to write to wall in process?

  Hi all, Have had a good hunt through the archive but can't find anyone trying to do this... hope someone familiar with the facebook API can confirm if it's possible? Basically I have a client who wants to replicate their membership sign up process in a tab on their facebook page. The form would still submit to their own website to process, we'd just be replicating the form fields. As an additional requirement they want to capture peoples facebook user ID and get permission to post back to a users wall at the same time... The idea being that once the user is a member we can post back to their wall so their friends see that they've signed up... Basically after a sanity check that: 1) these things are possible to do; 2) the best method to build the form in a FB page - I'm guessing using JS to create all fields & ajax to submit to the external site?   I have problems with saving derived type (TPT) with Entity Framework to database. Let's say I have base entity Animal and derived type Dog. I want to save Dog entity. I thought that I could do it like contex.AddToDogs(), but contex contain only base entity - Animal. So I can only save Animal object - contex.AddToAnimals(). I have also tried with contex.AddObject("Animals", dogInstance), but I get the following error: The member with identity 'NavigationProperty' does not exist in the metadata collection. But I have add EntityReference to the "NavigationProperty". So how to save derived type in EF?

  I've seen in WPF where you can bind control values to properties of other controls. How is that binding accomplished in C++? For example, if I have a class called Car and a guage control called RPM, how do I tie the value of RPM to the member variable Car.RPM, so that when Car.RPM changes, it is automatically (as in without a specific update call coded by me) reflected by the RPM control? General answers or directions to pertinent resources would be fine also, as I'm just beginning to dabble in C++ and haven't had much Google luck with this particular question.

  Hi, I have a problem with the memory management in Objective-C. Say I have a method that allocates an object and stores the reference to this object as a member of the class. If I run through the same function a second time, I need to release this first object before creating a new one to replace it. Supposing that the first line of the function is: NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; This means that a different auto-release pool will be in place. The code to allocate the object is as follows: if (m_object != nil) [m_object release]; m_object = [[MyClass alloc] init]; [m_object retain]; The problem is that the program crashes when running the last line of the method: [pool release]; What am I doing wrong ?   I'd like a delegate that calls a function in a different thread when it is invoked. Currently, I'm using the following implementation: delegate void someFunctionDelegate(); //... someFunctionDelegate callBackFunction = someForm.SomeFunction; someForm.Invoke(someFunctionDelegate); However, I'd like a more compact form, combining both the someForm instance and the SomeForm.SomeFunction member function. I'm thinking of something like this: var callBackFunction = new AsynchronousCrossThreadDelegate(someForm, SomeForm.SomeFunction); callBackFunction(); // Should call someForm.BeginInvoke(SomeForm.SomeFunction); Is there a way to do so in C#/.NET?   I am trying to call up a modal table view controller using presentModalViewController but I am not sure what to do about the delegate. The following code gives me an error: MyRidesListView *controller = [[MyRidesListView alloc] init]; controller.delegate = self; [self presentModalViewController:controller animated:YES]; [controller release]; Error: Request for member 'delegate' is something not a structure or union Now, I realized there is no delegate property in my MyRidesListView class. So, how would I add a reference to my delegate there? What am I missing here?

• Transient variables are not captured properly on form submission

  My User entity class have several member variables (e.g. String firstName) which are persisted and some transient variables (e.g. transient boolean selected) which are not. I have used the transient variable to capture a checkbox selection, but invariably the value never gets set and procesed properly until I set another bean value along with it. i.e. If User has firstName (mapped to a text field) and selected (mapped to a checkbox) If I just selected the value doesn't seem to be set on an update If I had selected the checkbox and the firstName field, the "selected" value is captured properly Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

  I have seen this question. It seems that regardless of the cast, the temporary object(s) will "survive" until the fullexpression evaluated. But in the following scenario: void foo(boost::tuple<const double&> n) { printf("%lf\n", n.get<0>()); } int main() { foo(boost::tuple<const double&>(2));//#1 foo(boost::make_tuple(2));//#2 return 0; } 1 run well, but 2 do not. And MSVC gave me a warning about 2: "reference member is initialized to a temporary that doesn't persist after the constructor exits" Now I am wondering why they both make a temporary "double" object and pass it to boost::tuple<const double&> and only 2 failed.

• Manage bad_alloc exception in C++ construtor

  I have Java experience and recently am doing some C++ coding. My question is that if I have class A, in which I have to instantiate class B and class C as two of the member variables of A. If in the constructor of A, should I assume that allocations of class B and C never fail, and handle the bad allocation exception in the destructor of A? If I don't make that assumption, meaning that I add some try catch block to catch bad_alloc of class B and class C, then if the allocation exception occurs, should I do clean up in the constructor of A? What are the recommended practices? If "new" generates a bad allocation, what value does the pointer carry?

• What is a great resource for learning about the implementation details of .NET generic collections?

  Hi all, I'm interested in understanding the underlying implementation details of generic collections in .NET. What I have in mind are details such as how the collections are stored, how each member of a collection is accessed by the CLR, etc. For collections that are analogous to traditional data structures, such as LinkedList and Dictionary, I think I have an understanding of what's going on underneath. However, I'm not as certain about collections like List (how is set up such that it is both indexable and expandable?) and SortedList, so any leads as to what I could look up to learn more about them would be greatly appreciated.

• Suggestions for performance improvement surrounding sending email notifications?

  It takes around a couple of seconds for my app to execute the code to send an email right now on a test server with nothing much else running. Not sure if this is typical/expected. I'm also using the php framework Kohana's email helper and not php's mail directly out of convenience if that matters. Is it always just better to schedule a cron job to send emails every 5 min or so? Or should I be able to send emails immediately and I'm just not doing something right? What the script does is insert a row into the db and notifies the relevant group that the row was created. The groups are usually < 20 people so I just do a loop calling Kohana's email helper each time for each member of the group.

• Activating "pointer-events:none" only on section of image that overlaps

  I'm using pointer-events:none; on the main photograph at the top of my site http://www.onedirection.net/, to allow the user to select the navigation behind the image. However, I'd like to let the user click on each member of the band to go to a separate page, but ONLY for the parts of the image that don't overlap into the navigation. I'm a bit stuck with this. Can it be done? I was thinking of using an image map, but can't get it working without the navigation becoming "less clickable".

  Is it possible to write a C++ template that changes behavior depending on if a certain member function is defined on a class? Here's a simple example of what I would want to write: template<class T> std::string optionalToString(T* obj) { if (FUNCTION_EXISTS(T->toString)) return obj->toString(); else return "toString not defined"; } So if class T has "toString" defined then it uses it, otherwise it doesn't. The magical part that I don't know how to do is the "FUNCTION_EXISTS" part.

I have this generic method for saving or updating objects ... protected void saveOrUpdate(Object obj) { final Session session = sessionFactory.getCurrentSession(); session.saveOrUpdate(obj); } You can assume that every argument, "obj," will have a member field that is marked with the "@Id" annotation. I would like to change the return type to return an Object that represents the persisted object in the database (meaning if "obj" didn't contain an id before, what is returned is the database object with a populated id. What is the fastest way to do this given my versioning and generic constraints?

  I've been programming with claims-based authentication for some time now with Windows Identity Foundation. It appears to me that in Windows Identity Foundation, once a user is logged in, the claims are basically strings of information that describe the user. With the old role-based authentication, I could say that a user is or is not a member of a given group, but with claims-based authentication, I can now have strings of information that describe a user. "This user is female". This user was born on "July 6, 1975". "This user logged in using a USB key". Is it the essence of claims-based authentication,that I have strings of information about the user given to the application by the framework?
