  • SQL Server becomes slow after restart

    I already posted this one on stackoverflow but someone gave me the hint to that I might have more luck on serverfault. We use SQL Server 2005 on an Windwos Server 2008. Ther Server has 48 GB RAM. SQL Server is configured to use 40 GB RAM. There is only one database hosted (About 70 GB). The only app beside SQL Server is our App-Server which connects the clients to the database. Now we encounter the following problem: After a restart of the server our the performance is great. The server grabs the 40 GB RAM wich it is allowed to and then runs fast as hell. But after about 4 weeks the system becomes slower and slower. The execution of statements (seen in the profiler) is raising slowly. But I cannot see that there is something going wrong on the server. CPU usage is at about 20% I/O also seems to be no Problem The process monitor does also not show that there are strange apps or something like that. Eventlog does also have no interessting messages No open transactions or blockings to see We do not use cursors in our app We tried already the following things without effect: Droped the cache by using the statements DBCC FreeProcCache DBCC FREESYSTEMCACHE('ALL') DBCC DropCleanbuffers Restarted the Appserver we are using. Restart the sql server service But nothing did help exept restarting the whole server. Any ideas?

    I am looking for a free alternative to TFS. What would be the best alternative stack(source control, bug tracking, project management/planning, wiki, automated builds (ci))? Keeping in mind that it would be nice if they all integrated well. For example, it would be nice to be able to link bugs to source control, and then be able to link to a project plan and then be able to automate building. I do not have issues with using Microsoft project to manage project planing. I know i would like to use these....: SVN TeamCity NUnit But i am struggling to find a good Wiki/Project Planning/Bug tracking, that would integrate well. Any questions let me know.

    We have a COM+ Data Layer that utilized Connection Pooling. Its deployed to 3 clusters, 2 SQL Server 2000 and 1 SQL Server 2005 environment. We noticed today that our monitoring software is reporting Thousands of Logins per minute on the SQL Server 2005 box. I did some tracing in both environments and profiler is reporting this for the 2000 boxes: sp_reset_connection SQL CALL sp_reset_connection SQL CALL sp_reset_connection SQL CALL and this for the 2005 box: Audit Logout sp_reset_connection Audit Login SQL CALL Audit Logout sp_reset_connection Audit Login SQL CALL Audit Logout sp_reset_connection Audit Login SQL CALL Is there some sort configuration for SQL Server 2005 different from SQL Server 2000 that we might be missing that would be creating this issue?

    I recently asked a question about upgrading from 2003 to 2008, but i realised this is a lot harder to do, the only reason i want to upgrade is to have increase the RAM Windows 2003 Standard Edition R2 only supports 4GB Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 supports up to 32GB Windows 2003 Datacentre Edition R2 supports up to 64GB So basically i need to do an in-place upgrade to either Enterpirse or Datacentre without losing any data is this possible? Also is one easier to upgrade to then the other?

  • Restoring snapshot for Microsoft Exchange server

    Hi, The background: I need to do some testing with Microsoft exchange server. Specifically, I'll be installing some software on the Microsoft exchange server machine and uninstalling that same software again. The problem I face: While I repeatedly do this with different versions of my software there is a chance that sometime later the Exchange server installation might get corrupted. When that happens I would need to reinstall Exchange server which I feel is somewhat of a chore. So what I am planning to do is to install the Ms Exchange server on a virtual machine in VMware ESX server and take a snapshot so that during my work whenever the installation is corrupted I can restore the snapshot. So here's my question: Would restoring the snapshot for the Microsoft Exchange server virtual machine work correctly? I'm not familiar with the intricacies of exchange server and any changes (if any) that happen with the Domain controller when we use or install an exchange server (Personally I don't think that should happen but just making sure). I have a shortage of time and hence decided to post this question here. Could someone please tell me whether restoring a snapshot for Exchange server would work fine? Thanks a load, Mugen

    We are evaluating our options to upgrade our Windows SBS 2003 server. We are considering Windows SBS 2008, which comes with Exchange 2007 and an extra Windows Server 2008 Standard license. If we also bought Exchange 2010, could we install it on the Windows Server 2008 Standard machine and use the web client in combination with the Exchange 2007 server (that would be hosting the mailboxes)? Is that a supported server role for Exchange 2010? I remember reading about so called front-end server configurations, but I have no experience with that. Thanks!

  • Can I upgrade a Windows 2000 domain to 2008 and demote the 2000 server without clients attached?

    Hi all, We're planning to replace a Windows 2000 domain controller with a new 2008 DC (new hardware). We've elected to take the route of getting the 2000 domain schema up-to-snuff, join the 2008 server, upgrade it to a DC, and after replication demote the 2000 server (eventually to be taken off-line). The goal being to not have to visit all the workstations, and limited domain down-time. :) We want bring the old server here and do all the backups, Domain prep, migration and role transfers here, and then (hopefully) just plop the new 2008 back in place after it's done, and join the 2000 server back as a member server (so we can then do folder migrations, etc.). Can this server work be done off-site, without the workstations attached? If we do this will anything need to be done to the clients, once the new DC is physically in place, so they contact the new 2008 DC; or will they just 'know' and continue on using the existing domain settings/user profiles, etc.?     Ever since the switch from Standard Time to Daylight Time, the time on our e-mail messages has been ahead by one hour. This symptom has me wondering if the cause is improper configuration of daylight savings settings. Since we're in a client/server environment, the clients synchronize with the server, and the server synchronizes with Boulder, Colorado. If I set both the server and the clients to automatically switch to daylight savings, the clients seem to regard the server as being set to Standard Time and set themselves an hour ahead of it, which is really two hours ahead. Should the server switch to daylight savings and the clients follow along on their next synchronization, or should the server stay on Standard Time and the clients switch over? The system clock on the Exchange Server is currently displaying the correct time. How do I get the e-mail messages to display the correct time in Outlook?

    I've got a Windows Server 2008 Standard installation here that I'm trying to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 Server, using the evaluation version. (The scenario is essentially that I need to test the upgrade, and specifically the upgrade process, before we spend the money on going ahead with the actual upgrade.) When I try to upgrade, it fails with the message: "Windows Server 2008 Standard cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI). You can choose to install a new... (etc., etc.)" Is this (non-upgradability) a known limitation of the evaluation version? (Unfortunately, I haven't found a clear answer on this point.) And if not, any thoughts on where else I might look for the problem and solutions to it?
