  • Do you have an address column somewhere in your database?

    - by shay.shmeltzer
Do you have an address column somewhere in your database? If the answer is yes - then the Web seminar I'm going to run together with the guys from Navteq on May 26th, might be of interest to you. You see, we all have geographical related information in our database, but many of us don't actually use this to do any geographical type of operations/representation with it. Well once you attend the "Add Maps to Your Java Applications - the Easy Way" seminar this might change. In the seminar we'll give you a quick overview of the Spatial related capabilities of the Oracle DB, Middleware and tools. And a demo showing you how easy it is to actually get data to show up on a map in your application and to interact with it. So register today, and mark your calendar.

  • Prepare and import data into existing database

    - by Álvaro G. Vicario
I maintain a PHP application with SQL Server backend. The DB structure is roughly this: lot === lot_id (pk, identify) lot_code building ======== buildin_id (pk, identity) lot_id (fk) inspection ========== inspection_id (pk, identify) building_id (fk) date inspector result The database already has lots and buildings and I need to import some inspections. Key points are: It's a one-time initial load. Data comes in an Excel file. The Excel data is unaware of DB autogenerated IDs: inspections must be linked to buildings through their lot_code What are my options to do such data load? date inspector result lot_code ========== =========== ======== ======== 31/12/2009 John Smith Pass 987654X 28/02/2010 Bill Jones Fail 123456B

I am a high school student and I need a laptop within the budget of 650$. I usually have a browser, microsoft office, music, and possibly a movie or something open at once. Will the HP ENVY 4's Intel Core i3 processor be enough to handle this or would I have to get the Samsung series 5 13 inch ultrabook to get this job done? I really like the look of the HP ENVY 4, but I also want a laptop that will be quick enough to handle my needs. PLEASE HELP!

  • How To Enable 3D Acceleration and Use Windows Aero in VirtualBox

    - by Chris Hoffman
VirtualBox’s experimental 3D acceleration allows you to use Windows 7’s Aero interface in a virtual machine. You can also run older 3D games in a virtual machine – newer ones probably won’t run very well. If you installed Windows 7 in VirtualBox, you may have been disappointed to see the Windows 7 Basic interface instead of Aero – but you can enable Aero with a few quick tweaks. • Returning the value of an identity column during/after SQL INSERT command

    - by Adam Kane
Using VS 2010, with ASP.NET, and .NET 3.0, and C#... When I use a System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSource and call its Insert() method to insert a new row, and that table has an identity column, I'd like my method to return the value of that column. For example, in my SQL 2005 table, I've got: Customer.Id Customer.FirstName Customer.LastName Where Customer.Id is an identity colum. When I call my method InsertNewCustomerRecord( "John", "Smith" ), I'd like to be able to return the Customer.Id that gets automatically generated in the database. Sorry for such a roughly posed question. Let me know if I can add better detail. Thanks.

  • Get Ready For C# 4.0!

Visual Studio 2010 is here! And of course this means that C# 4.0 is also here. Lets do a quick review of the new language features added in this release. Dynamic The dynamic keyword is a key feature of this release. It closes the gap between dynamic and statically-typed languages. Now you can create dynamic objects and let their types be determined at run time. With the addition of the System.Dynamic namespace, you can create expandable objects and advanced class wrappers, and you can provide interoperability...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Ubuntu and Surface Pro, wifi issues not fixed?

    - by Confused or too stupid
Just a quick question, from the numerous other threads I found, is the wifi still a no go straight out of installing Ubuntu? I tried this Dual boot Surface Pro with Ubuntu? with 13.04, the wifi is sporadic in working. From that and other threads I gathered that 13.10 would include the fix, so I tossed that onto the Surface as well, with the same results. Is there anything I am missing? Is there any other distro that has better luck with the Marvell chip?

  • postgresql syntax while exists loop

    - by veilig
I'm working at function from Joe Celkos book - Trees and Hierarchies in SQL for Smarties I'm trying to delete a subtree from an adjacency list but part my function is not working yet. WHILE EXISTS –– mark leaf nodes (SELECT * FROM OrgChart WHERE boss_emp_nbr = -99999 AND emp_nbr > -99999) LOOP –– get list of next level subordinates DELETE FROM WorkingTable; INSERT INTO WorkingTable SELECT emp_nbr FROM OrgChart WHERE boss_emp_nbr = -99999; –– mark next level of subordinates UPDATE OrgChart SET emp_nbr = -99999 WHERE boss_emp_nbr IN (SELECT emp_nbr FROM WorkingTable); END LOOP; my question: is the WHILE EXISTS correct for use w/ postgresql? I appear to be stumbling and getting caught in an infinite loop in this part. Perhaps there is a more correct syntax I am unaware of.

  • ANTLRWorks 2: Early Access Preview 10

    - by Geertjan
I took a quick look at how the ANTLRWorks 2 project is getting on... and discovered that today, March 23, the new early access preview 10 has been released: http://www.antlr.org/wiki/display/ANTLR4/1.+Overview Downloaded it immediately and was impressed when browsing through the Java.g file that I also found on the Antlr site: (Click to enlarge the image above.) On the page above, the following enhancements are listed: Add tooltips for rule references Finally fixed the navigator update bug Major improvements to code completion Fix legacy mode Many performance and stability updates I've blogged before about how the developers on the above project consider their code completion to be "scary fast". Some discussions have taken place about how code developed by the ANTLRWorks team could be contributed to the NetBeans project, since NetBeans IDE and ANTLRWorks 2 are both based on the NetBeans Platform.

  • Good ergonomic keyboards for ruby/rails programmer using vim (on Mac) [closed]

    - by Brand
I'm looking to buy an ergonomic keyboard but I'm unable to find answers for my specific needs. I'm a programmer so I need to be able to have quick/easy access to my curly brace and bracket keys. I use vim extensively so having the ctrl and esc keys in a easier to reach location would help. I'm also a mac user (doing ruby/rails dev). With all these things in mind, what are some good options for ergonomic keyboards? I'm afraid someone will see this as "off topic" but please realize I need to ask fellow programmers. For example, I was thinking of the Kinesis Keyboard but read some reviews saying it's not good for programming. That's when I realized other programmers would be the best at answering this question.

  • Ubuntu boot is slower than Windows 7

    - by Alex Bixel
One of the reasons I installed Ubuntu (Wubi installer) was for a supposedly quick boot time. My boot time with Windows 7 is about 20-25 seconds, while my boot with Ubuntu is 30-40. I judged the boot times from the time after I selected the operating system on the initial selection menu and the grub menu, respectively. This is even after following all sorts of online guides to improve it. I've done driver profiling (and yes, I remembered to remove the "profile" edit in the grub file afterwards), I've cut a fair few startup programs out, and I've installed the preload package. But I'm still getting startup rates phenomenally slower than Windows 7. Any help here?

  • Are there existing FOSS component-based frameworks?

    - by Tesserex
The component based game programming paradigm is becoming much more popular. I was wondering, are there any projects out there that offer a reusable component framework? In any language, I guess I don't care about that. It's not for my own project, I'm just curious. Specifically I mean are there projects that include a base Entity class, a base Component class, and maybe some standard components? It would then be much easier starting a game if you didn't want to reinvent the wheel, or maybe you want a GraphicsComponent that does sprites with Direct3D, but you figure it's already been done a dozen times. A quick Googling turns up Rusher. Has anyone heard of this / does anyone use it? If there are no popular ones, then why not? Is it too difficult to make something like this reusable, and they need heavy customization? In my own implementation I found a lot of boilerplate that could be shoved into a framework.

  • Using Interlocked.Exchange(ref Enum, 1) to prevent re-entrancy [migrated]

    - by makerofthings7
What options do I have for pending work that can't acquire a lock via the following sample? System.Threading.Interlocked.CompareExchange<TrustPointStatusEnum> (ref tp.TrustPointStatus, TrustPointStatusEnum.NotInitalized,TrustPointStatusEnum.Loading); Based on my research think I have the following options: I can use Threading.SpinWait (for very quick IO tasks) at the cost of CPU I can use Sleep() which has an unreliable wake up time I'm not sure of any other option, but what I want to make sure of is that all these options work with the .NET 4 async and await keywords, especially if I use Task to run them on a background thread

  • Determining Whether a String Is Contained Within a String Array (Case Insensitive)

About once every couple of months I need to write a bit of code that does one thing if a particular string is found within an array of strings and something else if it is not ignoring differences in case. For whatever reason, I never seem to remember the code snippet to accomplish this, so after spending 10 minutes of research today I thought I'd write it down here in an effort to help commit it to memory or, at the very least, serve as a quick place to find the answer when the need arises again. So without further adieu, here it is:Visual Basic Version:If stringArrayName.Contains("valueToLookFor", StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase) Then ... Else ... End IfC# Version:if (stringArrayName.Contains("valueToLookFor", StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase)) ... else ...Without the StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase the search will be case-sensitive. For more information on comparing strings, see: New Recommendations for Using Strings in Microsoft .NET 2.0.Happy Programming!Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • YouTube: CoffeeScript Rocks (in NetBeans IDE)

    - by Geertjan
CoffeeScript is a handy preprocessor for JavaScript, as shown in a quick demo below on YouTube, using the CoffeeScript plugin for NetBeans IDE. Right now, the NetBeans Plugin Portal doesn't have a CoffeeScript plugin for NetBeans IDE 7.4, but not to worry, the NetBeans IDE 7.3 plugin works just fine. http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/39007/coffeescript-netbeans Here's a small YouTube clip I made today showing how it all works: Also read this very handy and detailed NetBeans tutorial, on which I based the demo above: https://netbeans.org/kb/docs/web/js-toolkits-jquery.html Related info: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgqVh_KpVKY http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/wa-coffee1/ http://blog.sethladd.com/2012/01/vanilla-dart-ftw.html http://api.jquery.com/fadeOut/

  • How to use a proprety/value table in MySQL

    - by David
I inherited a mysql database that has a table with columns like this: object_id, property, value It holds data like this: 1,first_name,Jane 1,last_name,Doe 1,age,10 1,color,red 2,first_name,Mike 2,last_name,Smith 2,age,20 2,color,blue 3,first_name,John 3,last_name,Doe 3,age,20 3,color,red ... Basically what I want to do is treat this table as a regular table. How would I get the id numbers (or all properties) of a person who is age 20 sorted by last and than first name? So far I have: SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'age' AND value = '20' union SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'color' AND value = 'red' But I'm not sure how to go about ordering the data. Thanks

  • Building a Roadmap for an IAM Platform

    - by B Shashikumar
Identity Management is no longer a departmental solution, it has become a strategic part of every organization's security posture. Enterprises require a forward thinking Identity Management strategy. In our previous blog post on "The Oracle Platform Approach", we discussed a recent study by Aberdeen which showed that organizations taking a platform approach can reduce cost by as much as 48% and have 35% fewer audit deficiencies. So how does an organization get started with an Identity Management (IAM) Platform? What are the components of such a platform and how can an organization continuously evolve it for better ROI and IT agility. What are some of the best practices to begin an IAM deployment? To find out the answers and to learn how ot build a comprehensive IAM roadmap, check out this presentation which discusses how Oracle can provide a quick start to your IAM program.  Platform approach-series-building a-roadmap-finalv1 View more presentations from OracleIDM

  • Languages with similar features to JavaFX Script

    - by bunglestink
I just completed a small project in JavaFX, only finding that it has been declared dead by Oracle. JavaFX Script actually seemed to be a pretty interesting language with some neat features for its domain, particularly with bind for data binding and on replace for triggered events. These features actually make the language very useful for small, quick, RIA type apps, which leads to my question: Are there any mainstream languages with features similar to bind and on replace? After working with JavaFX, I got some ideas for some small personal (academic) projects that could take advantage of these features, but I would prefer to not start anything new in a language considered extinct by its owners.

  • Visual Studio 2010 Find and Replace With Regular Expressions

    - by Lance Robinson
Here is a quick notes about using regular expressions in the VS2010 Find Replace dialog.  1.  To create a backreference, use curly braces (“{“ and “}” ) instead of regular parentheses. 2.  To use the captured backreference, use \1\2 etc, where \1 is the first captured value, \2 is the second captured value, etc. Example: I want to find*: info.setFieldValue(param1, param2); and replace it with: SetFieldValue(info, param1, param2); To do this, I can use the following find/replace values: Find what: {[a-zA-Z0-9]+}.setFieldValue\({[a-zA-Z0-9., ]+}\); Replace with: SetFieldValue(\1, \2); Use Regular Expressions is checked, of course. *If you’re wondering why I’d want to do this – because I don’t have control over the setFieldValue function – its in a third party library that doesn’t behave in a very friendly manner. • is a merchant account a requirment for a website to take payments

    - by calum
I have had a quick look but couldn't see anything related. Basically, if we were to accept payments for events on our website, via paypal (essentially a Buy it now! button), as a business, do we need a merchant's account, or will a regular bank account be acceptable? I may have some confusion in terms. My understanding is you need a merchant's account to accept credit card payments, but as we are using PayPal, is this necessary? Thank you for any clarification. disclaimer - I've read What are some options for taking payments on my website? but it doesn't explicitly say if we require a merchant account or not. Thank you.

  • Programming Language vs. Game Engine [on hold]

    - by hunteroatway17
I understand that this question has been asked multiple times before. I am just asking this quick and simple question. I have been learning programming in C#, Java and C++ for the past 6 months; Just experimenting with each. I think that C++ is the one that I like most. What I would like to know and am wondering about is should I learn a programming language and use a 2D framework like Allegro; Or should I learn Unity and make 2D games in that because it is probably faster and easier. I want to learn something that I can get pretty good at, seeing as I am pursuing a career in indie game development. I also have a programmer's mind set and I am a left brain thinker so learning a language is not a issue. I just want to best and most future proof choice. Thanks.
