• How to warehouse data that is not needed from MS SQL server

  I have been asked to truncate a large table in MS SQL Server 2008. The data is not needed but might be needed once every two years. It will NEVER have to be changed, only viewed. The question is, since I don't need the data on a day-to-day basis, what do I do with it to protect and back it up? Please keep in mind that I will need to have it accessible maybe once every two years, and it is FINE for us if the recovery process takes a few hours. The entire table is about 3 million rows and I need to truncate it to about 1 million rows.

  I am running a team of two 10 GigE ports on Intel X520-DA2 network card. They work well in tandem and achieve the desired throughput. However, I see an intermittent issue whereby WireShark and my own application (using WinPCap) only show the underlying ports, failing to recognize the team adapter. • 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied error from web app running in IIS 7.5 using App Pool Identity

  I have an ASP.NET app on a Windows 2008 server, IIS 7.5. When I try to access web site, I get a login popup. If I click "cancel" I get a 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. The app is using Windows authentication (anonymous is disabled). The app has it's own app pool, running under the App Pool Identity. If I change the app pool to run under the NetworkService account, my website functions just fine. I'm guessing that this is just a permissions issue, but can't figure out what permissions I need to change. I gave the App Pool Identity permissions on the physical directory of the app, but that didn't solve the problem.

  I'm following what should be simple instructions to enable LDAP SSL on our domain controller (instructions here). Duplicating the Kerberos certificate is successful however, when attempting to select "Certificate Template to Issue", the created certificate does not appear. What gives? A long time ago, I actually completed this step on a now decommissioned DC with no problem. Our environment is Windows Server 2008 Standard, and we have two domain controllers. Only one has the role of certificate authority. I look forward to any help here, thank you ahead of time.

  i'm a total newbie on windows failover clustering. and what i want to do now is to setup the FC (failover clustering) on two win 2008 R2 server. and right now i have my custom window service running on both machine. But they cannot run concurrently as it will mess up the DB, thus i just want one to be available at all time (high availability). so i'm wondering if there's any way to set the failover policy to include this custom window service that i've installed on these machines so that if this service goes down or die, then it will automatically trigger the failover to the second node. is this possible? or must it be done programatically? and if so what is the best way? thanks ~m

• Trying to mount NFS share on Windows Machien at startup with Z: letter for all users

  Windows Server 2008 We are trying to mount a specific drive letter on a windows machine from a unix machine. We need the mount to be available to the server even if no users are logged in and to users who are logged in with If we run the command from the command prompt manually it conencts and we have access to the NFS share, and can open it and see and edit files. mount -o fileaccess=777 anon \\127.0.0.1\nav z: (ip address replaced with 127.0.0.1 for security reasons) However if we try to automate the task by making an entry in the task schedule for boot time, to execute the batch script, it adds a disconencted drive to the list in 'My Computer' but it is disconencted and when trying to access the drive an error is produced: Z: is not accessible The data area passed to a system call is too small.| Tried as administrator with highest privelidges, as SYSTEM (group) and as my user (adminstator level user) same results. Is there another way to do this? Most of the help I have found online suggest this way but it keeps failing.

• SQL log shipping for reporting

  I would like to create a read-only copy of my SQL Server 2008 database on a secondary server for reporting and analysis. I've been testing log shipping, configured to run every 5 minutes or so. Alas, there appears to be a stumbling block, for exclusive access is required on the target database during the restore, which in turn requires killing all active connections. This is far from ideal, especially if a user is in the middle of running a report. Any better suggestions? Edit : I'm doing this on the Express edition.

  I'm looking for some ideas on how to disconnect, logoff, or reset a user's session in a 2008 Terminal Server (unable to login as the user either as it is completely locked-up). This is a production environment, so rebooting the server or doing something system-wide is out of the question for now. Any Powershell tricks to help us with this? We've tried killing the session's processes too, directly from the same terminal server (from the task manager, Terminal Services Manager and the Resource Monitor) with no results. Help!

• Folder redirection save times are awful slow

  I recently set up folder redirection for Documents on Server 2008, but it's painfully slow at the moment. My users are all using Visual Studio 2010, and a save takes 20-30 seconds (whereas it used to take 2 seconds locally). I understand this is because they are being saved to the server, and that takes time (though I did think it would be faster over a gigabit link, with servers on the same network). I enabled offline files on the share, set the option to All files or folders, and enabled Optimize for performance. I thought that this would pull all the files down locally (which I think it did), allow local editing of said files, synchronizing them quietly in the background from time to time (which it does not do - saves right to the share). Is there any way I can speed this process up a bit? Any other tweaks I can do?

  Hi I have a trouble on my windows 2008 server. I host several web site on it. From some days ago, my web sites stop responding on port 80 after a while. In this time I can't access web sites from local machine and from remote. I can also browse websites on other ports ( custom port that I set) I find that I have many Syn_Received status on netstat. And when web sites stop, I got only syn_received on port 80. I have to restart server because when I try to restart IIS , it takes a long time to stop W3SVC and many times it doesn’t stop at all.   I know Linux can use RDMA NICs like Solarflare... I just found Intel has something like that NetEffect cards. But Intel is talking all about clusters.. Can someone please explain. If I want low-latency networking and install RDMA NIC on my server. Is there limitation on where the cable can go? Is there a specific device expected on the other end? Is it special RDMA switch or RDMA adapter before switch or what? Why is this cluster talk? What if I want a single server with Windows (I can install HPC Windows or Windows 2008 R2)?

• IIS 7.5 401.3 Access Denied

  I am having this weird issue with IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 x64. I created a site in IIS and manually created a test file index.html and everything worked. When I try to do a deployment, I copy all the files from my local PC to the IIS server, try to access index.html (this is the proper deployed file) and getting 401.3 access denied error. I then try to manually recreate index.html and copy content into this newly created file and the page is accessible again... I just can't figure this out. So the issue is that IIS 7.5 can't server files that have been copied from other PCs. I tried to reset/apply permission settings to the copied folders/files but nothing has worked. Please help. Thanks! By the way, the files that I copied are just some html cutups i.e. generic html, css and image files, nothing special.

  When IIS 7.5 Request Filtering blocks a request it seems to add an entry into the regular IIS web logs with a 404. a) Is there any way to send the detailed Request Filtering logs to a separate file? UrlScan could specify LoggingDirectory and keep this "noise" out of our real IIS logs b) Also, is there a way to get more information that Request Filtering blocked a request? UrlScan logged the rule that caused the denial as well as control over a redirection using RejectResponseUrl which was especially convenient in non-production sites. c) If these features are important is the recommended practice to still install UrlScan 3.1 on IIS 7.5 (Windows 2008 R2) and disable Request Filtering? Any guidance is appreciated.

  Hello, I have NT services compiled with 32 bit version of oracle client on windows 7, but when I run this service on windows 2008 I get error: Unable to load OraOps10.dll. I guess that this is because I have newer version of oracle client on the server then on my development station, but I can not install old (32 bit version) client on server, and can not install 64 bit client on development station...   I need to create a copy of my SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise database and have it located on the same server as the original. I will be using this second copy of the database as the target of a mostly read-only website. I understand that if I create this copy of the database using snapshot replication that all data changes in the subscriber database will be overwriten in the event of the next replication. The web application will try to write to this database to record login attempts, etc and will fail if its source database is read-only. In my case I do not need to keep these auditing records and they can therefore be overwriten each time a new snapshot is applied. My question is whether SQL Server forces the subcriber database to be read-only and is there any way around this? Thank you, Nate

  I have a general use laptop. I use it for games, development, and web surfing. I've just installed SQL Server 2008 with Analysis, Reporting, and Error reporting, as well as any of the other options on the installer. I also have a default instance of SQL server as well as a named instance. When I'm not doing development, I'd like to shut down these services conveniently. I'm thinking that a batch file would be good. What are the commands to shut these services down and release the associated memory and resources? It appears that: net stop MSSQLSERVER seems to stop the MSSQLSERVER instance. What about the other services?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 1.0 application that uses Forms Authentication. We are using Windows Server 2008. I need to lock down the site so that only certain users (in AD Groups) can access the site. Unfortunately, though, when I set the site to not allow anon users and use windows authentication, due to the integration of the site and IIS, it shows the user as signed in as their domain account, instead of allowing them to sign in through Forms Auth. So, I need a mixed mode authentication. I need the site to be only accessible through windows auth, without anon users, but once you are in, it needs to use forms auth only. How would I go about doing this the right way?

• Command window missing default 8x12 font

  Installation: Windows Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Service role When I logon locally my command window (cmd.exe) displays with default font that is 8x12. But when I logon remotely and open command window, it opens with the smallest possible font selection. Opening window properties and setting font size, the default 8x12 font is missing from the list. What should I do to get this font back in the list? Following screenshots show settings when logged on locally and remotely.   Win/7 Professional SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Reporting Services Configuration Manager When I launch it, shows correct Server Name, but report server instance is blank. When I press FIND I get: "Unable to connect to the Report Server " This is my development workstation, so no IIS installed. Seems to work fine on XP. SSMS works fine - no issues. I tried uninstalling SQL Server completely, rebooting, reinstalling a fresh download. Same result. I've googled every article I can find - nothing. • Virutal Machine loses network connectivity on Hyper V

  We're running a number of VMs on a 6 node failover cluster of blades using Hyper V. We have an intermittent issue (every few days at different times - not a fixed frequency) of VMs losing network connectivity. Console access to the VM suggests all is fine and the underlying blade has normal connectivity. To resolve the problem we either have to re-start the VM or, more usually, we do a live migration to another blade which fires up connectivity and we then migrate it back to the original blade. I've had 3 instances of this happen with a specific VM running on a particular blade however it has happened once with a different VM running on a different blade. All VMs and blades have the same basic setup and are running Windows 2008 R2. Any ideas where I should be looking to diagnose the possible causes of this problem as the event logs provide no help?

I work for a large company and the Active Directory people are unwilling to change group policy.   I have just started playing around with Vmware sphere and have the hypervisor OS installed on a spare HP ProLiant DL360 G4. I have created a test virtual machine running Ubuntu which has worked well. As a test project I wanted to convert a powered on server running Windows Server 2008 64bit into a virtual machine. As soon as I ran the Vmware Go software to start the conversion it became apparent that I cannot run 64bit guest OS's on that particular server. So, is there a way of migrating 64bit to 32bit during the conversion?
