• Altering policies in policy based management to look at even which happened only in last 24 hours

  Hi, I am using SQL server 2008 Standard edition. I am using Policy based management with policies which come with SQL server during installation. I want the policies to only look at events that happened in last 24 hours. For example for "Windows Event Log System Failure Error" policy if system restarted unexpectedly 5 days ago, i don't want to be alerted daily. Is there any way by which I can restrict a policy to look at events which happened in last 24 hours not older? Any help please? Thanks in advance.

• MSDCS zone missing

  I seem to have an issue with our AD/DNS, the structure looks like: but the BPA gives me an error: Issue: The Active Directory integrated DNS zone _msdcs.<domain> was not found. Impact: DNS queries for the Active Directory integrated zone _msdcs.<domain> might fail. Resolution: Restore the Active Directory integrated DNS zone _msdcs.<domain> Now we've got 4 DC's in total: 2 running Server 2008 R2, 2 running Server 2003. The older ones will be retired sometime this year. Actually everything seems to be working ok (if something isn't then we don't know about it), we've got quite a few .NET applications authenticating against AD, no DNS issues from what I can tell and various bits on the network point to all 4 controllers. Furthermore a dcdiag /dnsall comes up with all passes. Is this something I should be worried about?

• Windows service running as network service - how does it authenticate? Breaking change in W2K8?

  A Windows service running as "Network Service" talks to services on other machines (here: SQL Server and Analysis Services), using Windows authentication. For authentication, we have to grant permissions to the machine account of the service. E.g. if service runs on server MYSERVER in domain MYDOMAIN, it'll authenticate itself as "MYDOMAIN\MYSERVER$". - Am I correct, so far? Now here's my question: does this still apply when talking to a service on the SAME machine? Or will it authenticate with something like "NT AUTHORITY\Network Service" instead when connecting to a local service? And: is there any chance this is a breaking change from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008? We're having an actual issue in our system where the account was able to connect to local services with only the machine account having permissions in W2K3. In W2K8, this doesn't seem to work anymore: authentication to local services now fails, but still works to remote machines.

• Hyper-v error starting vm after reboot

  Hi rebooted hyper-v host running server 2008 r2. After reboot one of my vm is throwing following error. 'The version does not support this version of file format' Out of my all vms this was only set to save state when shutdown. I tried deleting state and start still same error. Tried inspect disk as well edit disk both throw same error when try to open this. What could it be? any way to resolve it?

• IIS 7 AppPool logs an error after recycle due to inactivity

  We have Windows 2008 RS Server running IIS hosting an ASP.NET site. This morning there was a weird sequence. First a notice that the AppPool was being recycled due to inactivity: "A worker process with process id of '6896' serving application pool 'xxxx' was shutdown due to inactivity. Application Pool timeout configuration was set to 20 minutes. A new worker process will be started when needed." This makes sense and jibes with out timeout settings, but 30 seconds later we see: "A process serving application pool 'xxxx' terminated unexpectedly. The process id was '6896'. The process exit code was '0xc0000005'." I found an older KB article that explains a condition where this might happend on IIS6 due to permission issues, but am curious what might cause this on IIS7.5, especially since we are not seeing it regularly.

• Problems with merge replication

  Hi, We are developing a multi-user desktop application with users located in different countries. The platform is - .net 3.5, SQL Server 2008, WinForms. Now, my client has used the help of a DBA who has implemented merge replication. To facilitate replication, we made all our primary keys as GUID. Now, we are facing these issues with replication - subscribers expiration sometimes stops replication and we have found no clean way to re-add every change to db schema requires to poll the whole data all over again! This seems to be strange, what could be the problem here? Also, sometimes we have duplicate keys, and that too stops replication I am sure these issues can be resolved. Maybe, we have not gone the right way to implement. Can you suggest how to go about implementing. Or, is the above information enough to diagnose the problem?

• Calling LoadLibraryEx on ISAPI filter failed (v4.0.30319)

  I installed .Net 1.1 on a Windows Server 2008 (which already had .NET 4 installed). Afterwards, I started getting the following error: HTTP Error 500.0 - Internal Server Error Calling LoadLibraryEx on ISAPI filter "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\\aspnet_filter.dll" failed I have tried running aspnet_regiis without success. I have also tried the suggestions by Rick Strahl but to no avail. I have also removed .NET 4.0.30319 using the cleanup tool. When I reinstalled it, The error was still there. I have already removed 1.1 but still i get that error. Please help.

• Replicating/Synchronizng multiple tables across diffrent Databases on the same instance

  I have few tables that needed to be replicated/synchronized across several databases in our SQL Server 2008 cluster. I know it's possible to replicate between multiple instances, but I'm looking for replication or synchronization in the same instance between specific tables of databases. The replicaiton/synchronization should happen every half-hour or so, but I don't mind it happening constantly. I can't use DROP the target table and INSERT (copy) the source table since there are many constraints. Reason for this is to not manage in the application layer and write to 2 different databases at the same time. Example: DB1 has T1, T2 and T3 - these are constantly being updated by the application, APP1 running on DB1. DB2 needs to have an updated copy of T1 at all times, also, there is a different application, APP2 runs only on DB2. Both DB1 and DB2 are located on the same instance, INST1. Would it be possible to replicate T1, T2 and T3 from DB1 to DB2 ? Thanks, Idan.

• MySQL keeps crashing OS server.. Please help adjust my.ini!

  I have MySQL 5.0 installed on a Windows 2008 machine (3GB RAM). My server crashes on a regular basis (almost once a day) with this error: Changed limits: max_open_files: 2048 max_connections: 800 table_cache: 619 I did not use the heavy InnoDB .ini file, although I am rethinking that I should have? I am worried that big configuration changes will make my current sites stop working. What should I do? • Windows 7 Laptops "unable to find logon server"

  In the school I work in we have a large number (500+) of Windows 7 laptops on a Meru Wireless system and Server 2008 R2 Servers. We have an appalingly large failure rate where a student or staff member tries to logon (to the laptop joined to the domain) and is met by "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request". I've seen this question and this one and while removing and re-joining to the domain works, it's highly time consuming, irritating, and we (I) have more important things to concentrate on. The only MS KB article I can find is regarding a read-only domain controller (which ours isn't) and I'm at my wits end. Ultimately, is there a definitve cause and answer to this or am I stuck removing and re-joining the laptops?

• How can I migrate websites between two identical servers?

  I have two servers that have a nearly identical (software) configuration. We are upgrading the web servers to run windows server 2008 R2, one already is however the main one (that currently has sites) is on WS2008. Now, the old server is ns.mydomain.com and the new server is ns1.mydomain.com. Since dns automatically fails over to ns1.mydomain.com I'd like a way to move all the vhosts to the new server. Is there an automatic way to move / recreate all the vhosts on the new server? I have figured out how to migrate the DNS records already DNS Migration and since both servers are on the same private network migrating the website data isn't a large issue. Every site is running PHP & MySQL and the MySQL server is external so the records won't have to be moved. Thanks

• RemoteApp: Logging in as user x disconnects user y

  I'm having a pretty bizarre problem with a Terminal Services server used for RemoteApp. In our network the server works as it should, but at a client's office if two users log in simultaneously, the first one gets disconnected as the other one connects. The users belong to the same group but have individual users. The similar configuration works fine for all other clients. About the server, it's Windows 2008 R2 x64, no AD, SSL encrypted connections. Event viewer shows no useful information. Any hints where to start debugging? Do you need more info about the setup?

• DFS-R + VSS - Run VSS at all locations or one?

  I have 4 servers, one at each office location, each sharing read/write copies of 1.5TB of data. Changes are replicated 24/7 between all 4 servers via DFS-R. All servers run Windows 2008 R2. I'm interested in implementing VSS (Volume Shadow Services) on this data. I've read that DFS-R and VSS play nicely together, but I'm left with one unanswered question: turn on VSS at all locations or just one (the headquarters). Can I run VSS at all 4 locations safely, or is it wiser to run it at just 1 location? Thanks!

  I would like to install a Test/Dummy SMTP server on a Windows 2008 server (virtual box). I just want to test my web application on the machine it self so I don't need the mails to go out on the internet, but just to be written to disk (so that I can verify that the mail function was indeed called and the correct data was handed over to SMTP) Can you recommend some tool. I guess starting your own SMTP server in python is an option. I am looking for a simple (ready to use) solution, targeted for tests systems. • bind udp problem

  I am using bind 9.6.1 and about 2 days ago I realized that there is a bug at bind for windows platform. when server gets "UDP client handler shutting down due to fatal receive error: host unreachable" error. it stays alive but no response for after dns queries. then I need to restart it manually to make it responsive(I put a task for this issue from windows). I cant use microsoft windows dns server because I am using windows 2008 server web edition which does not include that. so my question is what are the other solutions you use for dns server in windows ?

  We are a small office set up with two PC's out of which one of my PCs runs 24hrs. Its almost equivalent to a small server, but right now we're in need of a server which is why I am planning to keep my machine as well as a server into a single PC. I've used VMware Workstation to create a powerful Windows Server 2008 within my PC and I want to attach it to my Network Switch through the same PC where I am hosting it. I want to use it almost like a physical server with an IP address and everything so that I can connect from one Pc to the Server directly or my applications can connect to Server straight with the IP address. • What's the best way to monitor a large number of application pools in IIS7?

  Some background first - We're running IIS 7 on Windows 2008. We're running around 250 websites per server with each site in it's own application pool. I need a way to monitor each application pool for crashes and hangs and to send an email alert if an application pool is unresponsive for more than say 2 minutes. I thought about having a virtual directory mapped into each site with an ASP.NET page that we could poll via our existing monitoring system (HostMonitor). Does anyone else have experience in this area?

  After few months from migrating one of my networks on Active Directory this issue started. A few users are encountering an issue from time to time - they cannot rename folders and files on desktop. The system throws an error saying the folder or file is already in use. • Creating a vm using Hyper-V causes the host of BSOD

  Hi, Problem description: When I try to create a virtual machine, the host bsod part way through the process. From the logs in lookes to fail/hang on the "Creating new VirtualDisckDriver with new VHD" step. The BSOD error code is SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION : STOP:0x0000003B When the machine has finished restarting, it looks to have created the vhd and XML files for the vm but it isn't accessable. I have two server bothing behaving in exactly the same way, so I don't believe it's a hardware fault. Has anyone had a similar experince? How did you resolve the problem? I also have a Windows 7 virtual machine, which is set to use the Active Directory box as its DNS and WINS server. • Why does the EFI shell not detect my Windows DVD?

  I'm currently looking into (U)EFI for the first time and am already really confused. I insert the Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise disc into the DVD-ROM and boot into the EFI shell. The shell will automatically list all detected devices, which are: blk0 :CDRom - Alias (null) Acpi(PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1F|2)/Ata(Primary,Master)/CDROM(Entry0) blk1 :BlockDevice - Alias (null) Acpi(PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1F|2)/Ata(Primary,Master) To my understanding, it should have already detected the filesystem on blk0 and should have mounted it as fs0. Why is that not happening? If I insert a USB drive, it gets mounted just fine. The board is an Intel S5520HC in case that makes a difference.

• I can access \\server via explorer but a program wont

  From ServerA I can access \\ServerB\Telephony\Files\abcdefgh.pdf using windows explorer. From the same ServerA when I try to access the same file on ServerB using a program (a program that imports files from csv file) I get "File Not Found" error. On \\ServerB\Telephony\ the Share is on and I added the service account that I used to log in to ServerA. I am clueless. Please suggest. (oh, it's a Windows 2008 R2 Server) (btw, I did try IP Address, FQDN but works with Explorer but CVS Importer wont read the path. At one time, I did get Access Denied but I dont get access denied anymore after adding the service account to the share. firewalls are off on the servers) Update: I go to My Computer Network I see many servers but ServerB is not in the list..

• W3SVC service stopping error

  Hi, I have a web server ( IIS 7.5 , windows 2008 64 Bit web server ed) and notice that in last few days all web sites on server stopped and cant browser by visitor. I check the event log but I didnt see any things related to this problem. When I try to restart IIS i got error on W3SVC serivce.When IIS try to STOP it, W3SVC goes to stopping state and never stop. so I can't start it again. I try and find that I never can restart the W3SVC and when IIS work fine if I try to restart this service, it goes to stopping and never stop. 1- how can I find the problem on IIS? • Has anyone managed to install Office Webapps on SharePoint 2010, on Windows 7 ?

  I've installed SharePoint 2010 as a development environment on my Windows 7 x64 environment (notes here) and would like to install Office Web Apps onto it also. However, when trying to install (following this link), I get an error saying that Web roles aren't installed. The error message in the log file is: Start C:\Windows\system32\ServerManagerCmd.exe -whatif -inputpath C:\Users\nickh\AppData\Local\Temp\PRE1.tmp.XML Error: Failed to start process for file: C:\Windows\system32\ServerManagerCmd.exe arguments: -whatif -inputpath C:\Users\nickh\AppData\Local\Temp\PRE1.tmp.XML ErrorCode: 2(0x2). Which is effectively saying that ServerManagerCmd is not found. It isn't on my machine as it is deprecated and replaced by Powershell functions, but is on Server 2008 R2. I've tried copying that over and it just fails to run. Is there a way to get Office WebApps installed on Win7 ? Is there a way to get a working version of ServerManagerCmd.exe on a Windows 7 x64 environment ? Many thanks
