  • Windows 7 freezes on boot screen

    - by this is a dead end
    There was some update that required me to restart my computer, so I did. when it restarted, it stays at the Windows boot screen forever, the screen that says "Starting Windows" and has that Windows logo in the middle. I've tried the start up repair program that shows up when I click F8 when the computer starts. And tried system restore but, it says it has restored windows successfully but it still freezes on the boot screen when I reboot it. When I try starting it in safe mode, it gets to the blue Windows background, the one with the logon screen, then says "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting Changes. Do not turn off." Then after a while it reboot by itself. Just noticed, the logo animation on the boot screen is still animated. So it's not completely frozen.

  • Animating the offset of the scrollView in a UICollectionView/UITableView causes prematurely disappearing cells

    - by radutzan
    We have a UICollectionView with a custom layout very similar to UITableView (it scrolls vertically). The UICollectionView displays only 3 cells simultaneously, with one of them being the currently active cell: [ 1 ] [*2*] [ 3 ] (The active cell here is #2.) The cells are roughly 280 points high, so only the active cell is fully visible on the screen. The user doesn't directly scroll the view to navigate, instead, she swipes the active cell horizontally to advance to the next cell. We then do some fancy animations and scroll the UICollectionView so the next cell is in the "active" position, thus making it the active one, moving the old one away and bringing up the next cell in the queue: [ 2 ] [*3*] [ 4 ] The problem here is setting the UICollectionView's offset. We currently set it in a UIView animation block (self.collectionView.contentOffset = targetOffset;) along with three other animating properties, which mostly works great, but causes the first cell (the previously active one, in the latter case, #2) to vanish as soon as the animation starts running, even before the delay interval completes. This is definitely not ideal. I've thought of some solutions, but can't figure out the best one: Absurdly enlarge the UICollectionView's frame to fit five cells instead of three, thus forcing it to keep the cells in memory even if they are offscreen. I've tried this and it works, but it sounds like an awfully dirty hack. Take a snapshot of the rendered content of the vanishing cell, put it in a UIImageView, add the UIImageView as a subview of the scrollView just before the cell goes away in the exact same position of the old cell, removing it once the animation ends. Sounds less sucky than the previous option (memory-wise, at least), but still kinda hacky. I also don't know the best way to accomplish this, please point me in the right direction. Switch to UIScrollView's setContentOffset:animated:. We actually used to have this, and it fixed the disappearing cell issue, but running this in parallel with the other UIView animations apparently competes for the attention of the main thread, thus creating a terribly choppy animation on single-core devices (iPhone 3GS/4). It also doesn't allow us to change the duration or easing of the animation, so it feels out of sync with the rest. Still an option if we can find a way to make it work in harmony with the UIView block animations. Switch to UICollectionView's scrollToItemAtIndexPath:atScrollPosition:animated:. Haven't tried this, but it has a big downside: it only takes 3 possible constants (that apply to this case, at least) for the target scroll position: UICollectionViewScrollPositionTop, UICollectionViewScrollPositionCenteredVertically and UICollectionViewScrollPositionBottom. The active cell could vary its height, but it always has to be 35 points from the top of the window, and these options don't provide enough control to accomplish the design. It could also potentially be just as problematic as 3.1. Still an option because there might be a way to go around the scroll position thing that I don't know of, and it might not have the same issue with the main thread, which seems unlikely. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Please ask if you need clarification. Thanks a lot!

  • Perl CGI that sends a temporary loading page to client then later sends the actual results page

  • Marrying Core Animation with OpenGL ES

    - by Ole Begemann
    Edit: I suppose instead of the long explanation below I might also ask: Sending -setNeedsDisplay to an instance of CAEAGLLayer does not cause the layer to redraw (i.e., -drawInContext: is not called). Instead, I get this console message: <GLLayer: 0x4d500b0>: calling -display has no effect. Is there a way around this issue? Can I invoke -drawInContext: when -setNeedsDisplay is called? Long explanation below: I have an OpenGL scene that I would like to animate using Core Animation animations. Following the standard approach to animate custom properties in a CALayer, I created a subclass of CAEAGLLayer and defined a property sceneCenterPoint in it whose value should be animated. My layer also holds a reference to the OpenGL renderer: #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> #import <QuartzCore/QuartzCore.h> #import "ES2Renderer.h" @interface GLLayer : CAEAGLLayer { ES2Renderer *renderer; } @property (nonatomic, retain) ES2Renderer *renderer; @property (nonatomic, assign) CGPoint sceneCenterPoint; I then declare the property @dynamic to let CA create the accessors, override +needsDisplayForKey: and implement -drawInContext: to pass the current value of the sceneCenterPoint property to the renderer and ask it to render the scene: #import "GLLayer.h" @implementation GLLayer @synthesize renderer; @dynamic sceneCenterPoint; + (BOOL) needsDisplayForKey:(NSString *)key { if ([key isEqualToString:@"sceneCenterPoint"]) { return YES; } else { return [super needsDisplayForKey:key]; } } - (void) drawInContext:(CGContextRef)ctx { self.renderer.centerPoint = self.sceneCenterPoint; [self.renderer render]; } ... (If you have access to the WWDC 2009 session videos, you can review this technique in session 303 ("Animated Drawing")). Now, when I create an explicit animation for the layer on the keyPath @"sceneCenterPoint", Core Animation should calculate the interpolated values for the custom properties and call -drawInContext: for each step of the animation: - (IBAction)animateButtonTapped:(id)sender { CABasicAnimation *animation = [CABasicAnimation animationWithKeyPath:@"sceneCenterPoint"]; animation.duration = 1.0; animation.fromValue = [NSValue valueWithCGPoint:CGPointZero]; animation.toValue = [NSValue valueWithCGPoint:CGPointMake(1.0f, 1.0f)]; [self.glView.layer addAnimation:animation forKey:nil]; } At least that is what would happen for a normal CALayer subclass. When I subclass CAEAGLLayer, I get this output on the console for each step of the animation: 2010-12-21 13:59:22.180 CoreAnimationOpenGL[7496:207] <GLLayer: 0x4e0be20>: calling -display has no effect. 2010-12-21 13:59:22.198 CoreAnimationOpenGL[7496:207] <GLLayer: 0x4e0be20>: calling -display has no effect. 2010-12-21 13:59:22.216 CoreAnimationOpenGL[7496:207] <GLLayer: 0x4e0be20>: calling -display has no effect. 2010-12-21 13:59:22.233 CoreAnimationOpenGL[7496:207] <GLLayer: 0x4e0be20>: calling -display has no effect. ... So it seems that, possibly for performance reasons, for OpenGL layers, -drawInContext: is not getting called because these layers do not use the standard -display method to draw themselves. Can anybody confirm that? Is there a way around it? Or can I not use the technique I laid out above? This would mean I would have to implement the animations manually in the OpenGL renderer (which is possible but not as elegant IMO).

  • uiscrollview not switching image subviews

    - by nickthedude
    I'm building a comic viewer app, that consists of two view controllers, the root viewcontroller basically displays a view where a user decides what comic they want to read by pressing a button. The second viewController actually displays the comic as a uiscrollview with a toolbar and a title at the top. So the problem I am having is that the comic image panels themselves are not changing from whatever the first comic you go to if you select another comic after viewing the first one. The way I set it up, and I admit it's not exactly mvc, so please don't hate, anyway the way I set it up is each comic uiscrollview consists of x number of jpg images where each comic set's image names have a common prefix and then a number like 'funny1.jpg', 'funny2.jpg', 'funny3.jpg' and 'soda1.jpg', 'soda2.jpg', 'soda3.jpg', etc... so when a user selects a comic to view in the root controller it makes a call to the delegate and sets ivars on instances of the comicviewcontroller that belongs to the delegate (mainDelegate.comicViewController.property) I set the number of panels in that comic, the comic name for the title label, and the image prefix. The number of images changes(or at least the number that you can scroll through), and the title changes but for some reason the images are the same ones as whatever comic you clicked on initially. I'm basing this whole app off of the 'scrolling' code sample from apple. I thought if I added a viewWillAppear:(BOOL) animated call to the comicViewController everytime the user clicked the button that would fix it but it didn't, after all that is where the scrollview is laid out. Anyway here is some code from each of the two controllers: RootController: -(IBAction) launchComic2{ AppDelegate *mainDelegate = [(AppDelegate *) [UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; mainDelegate.myViewController.comicPageCount = 3; mainDelegate.myViewController.comicTitle.text = @"\"Death by ETOH\""; mainDelegate.myViewController.comicImagePrefix = @"etoh"; [mainDelegate.myViewController viewWillAppear:YES]; [mainDelegate.window addSubview: mainDelegate.myViewController.view]; comicViewController: -(void) viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated { self.view.backgroundColor = [UIColor viewFlipsideBackgroundColor]; // 1. setup the scrollview for multiple images and add it to the view controller // // note: the following can be done in Interface Builder, but we show this in code for clarity [scrollView1 setBackgroundColor:[UIColor whiteColor]]; [scrollView1 setCanCancelContentTouches:NO]; scrollView1.indicatorStyle = UIScrollViewIndicatorStyleWhite; scrollView1.clipsToBounds = YES; // default is NO, we want to restrict drawing within our scrollview scrollView1.scrollEnabled = YES; // pagingEnabled property default is NO, if set the scroller will stop or snap at each photo // if you want free-flowing scroll, don't set this property. scrollView1.pagingEnabled = YES; // load all the images from our bundle and add them to the scroll view NSUInteger i; for (i = 1; i <= self.comicPageCount; i++) { NSString *imageName = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@%d.jpg", self.comicImagePrefix, i]; NSLog(@"%@%d.jpg", self.comicImagePrefix, i); UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:imageName]; UIImageView *imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:image]; // setup each frame to a default height and width, it will be properly placed when we call "updateScrollList" CGRect rect = imageView.frame; rect.size.height = kScrollObjHeight; rect.size.width = kScrollObjWidth; imageView.frame = rect; imageView.tag = i; // tag our images for later use when we place them in serial fashion [scrollView1 addSubview:imageView]; [imageView release]; } [self layoutScrollImages]; // now place the photos in serial layout within the scrollview } - (void)layoutScrollImages { UIImageView *view = nil; NSArray *subviews = [scrollView1 subviews]; // reposition all image subviews in a horizontal serial fashion CGFloat curXLoc = 0; for (view in subviews) { if ([view isKindOfClass:[UIImageView class]] && view.tag 0) { CGRect frame = view.frame; frame.origin = CGPointMake(curXLoc, 0); view.frame = frame; curXLoc += (kScrollObjWidth); } } // set the content size so it can be scrollable [scrollView1 setContentSize:CGSizeMake((self.comicPageCount * kScrollObjWidth), [scrollView1 bounds].size.height)]; } Any help would be appreciated on this. • NSUserDefaults loses 3 rows each time it's called

    - by Jeff Decker
    Hello Everyone! Brand new programmer here, so off-topic help/constructive criticism welcome. I am saving a default state (such as "New York") in a UIPickerView which is in a FlipSideView. It certainly saves for the first and second time I check to make sure it's the same state (I am clicking "done" and then "info" repeatedly), but on the third check the picker has moved up three states (to "New Hampshire") and then every time I check the picker progresses three more states. Here's the .h and .m files of the FlipSideViewController: #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> import "Calculator.h" @protocol FlipsideViewControllerDelegate; @interface FlipsideViewController : UIViewController { id delegate; UIPickerView *myPickerView; NSArray *pickerViewArray; } @property (nonatomic, assign) id delegate; @property (nonatomic, retain) UIPickerView *myPickerView; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSArray *pickerViewArray; (IBAction)done; @end @protocol FlipsideViewControllerDelegate - (void)flipsideViewControllerDidFinish:(FlipsideViewController *)controller; @end import "FlipsideViewController.h" @implementation FlipsideViewController @synthesize delegate; @synthesize myPickerView, pickerViewArray; -(CGRect)pickerFrameWithSize:(CGSize)size;{ CGRect screenRect = [[UIScreen mainScreen] applicationFrame]; CGRect pickerRect = CGRectMake( 0.0, screenRect.size.height - size.height, size.width, size.height); return pickerRect; } (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; self.view.backgroundColor = [UIColor viewFlipsideBackgroundColor]; [self createPicker]; } -(void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated;{ [super viewWillAppear:NO]; NSUserDefaults *defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; [myPickerView selectRow:[defaults integerForKey:@"pickerRow"] inComponent:0 animated:NO]; } -(void)createPicker;{ pickerViewArray = [[NSArray arrayWithObjects: @"Alabama",@"Alaska", @"Arizona",@"Arkansas",@"California",@"Colorado",@"Connecticut",@"Delaware", @"District of Columbia",@"Florida",@"Georgia",@"Hawaii",@"Idaho",@"Illinois",@"Indiana",@"Iowa", @"Kansas",@"Kentucky",@"Louisiana",@"Maine",@"Maryland",@"Massachusetts",@"Michigan", @"Minnesota",@"Mississippi",@"Missouri",@"Montana",@"Nebraska",@"Nevada",@"New Hampshire",@"New Jersey", @"New Mexico",@"New York",@"North Carolina",@"North Dakota",@"Ohio",@"Oklahoma", @"Oregon",@"Pennsylvania",@"Rhode Island",@"South Carolina",@"South Dakota",@"Tennessee", @"Texas",@"Utah",@"Vermont",@"Virginia",@"Washington",@"West Virginia",@"Wisconsin",@"Wyoming", nil] retain]; myPickerView = [[UIPickerView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectZero]; CGSize pickerSize = [myPickerView sizeThatFits:CGSizeZero]; myPickerView.frame = [self pickerFrameWithSize:pickerSize]; myPickerView.autoresizingMask = UIViewAutoresizingFlexibleWidth; myPickerView.showsSelectionIndicator = YES; myPickerView.delegate = self; myPickerView.dataSource = self; [self.view addSubview:myPickerView]; } (IBAction)done { [self.delegate flipsideViewControllerDidFinish:self]; } pragma mark - pragma mark UIPickerViewDataSource (NSString *)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView titleForRow:(NSInteger)row forComponent:(NSInteger)component { NSUserDefaults *defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; [defaults setInteger:row forKey:@"pickerRow"]; [defaults setObject:[pickerViewArray objectAtIndex:row] forKey:@"pickerString"]; return [pickerViewArray objectAtIndex:row]; } (void)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView didSelectRow:(NSInteger)row inComponent:(NSInteger)component { NSUserDefaults *defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; [defaults setInteger:row forKey:@"pickerRow"]; [defaults setObject:[pickerViewArray objectAtIndex:row] forKey:@"pickerString"]; } (CGFloat)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView widthForComponent:(NSInteger)component { return 240.0; } (CGFloat)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView rowHeightForComponent:(NSInteger)component { return 40.0; } (NSInteger)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView numberOfRowsInComponent:(NSInteger)component { return [pickerViewArray count]; } (NSInteger)numberOfComponentsInPickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView { return 1; } call me mystified!   • UIView, UIScrollView and UITextFields problem calling Method

    - by Jeff Groby
    I have a view with several embedded UITextFields, this UIView is subordinated to a UIScrollView in IB. Each text field is supposed to invoke a method called updateText defined in the viewcontroller implementation file when the user is done editing the field. For some reason, the method updateText never gets invoked. Anyone have any ideas how to go about fixing this? The method fired off just fine when the UIScrollView was not present in the project but the keyboard would cover the text fields during input, which was annoying. Now my textfields move up above the keyboard when it appears, but won't fire off the method when done editing. Here is my implementation file: #import "MileMarkerViewController.h" @implementation MileMarkerViewController @synthesize scrollView,milemarkerLogDate,milemarkerDesc,milemarkerOdobeg,milemarkerOdoend,milemarkerBusiness,milemarkerPersonal,milemarker; - (id)initWithNibName:(NSString *)nibNameOrNil bundle:(NSBundle *)nibBundleOrNil { if (self = [super initWithNibName:nibNameOrNil bundle:nibBundleOrNil]) { // Initialization code } return self; } - (BOOL) textFieldShouldReturn: (UITextField*) theTextField { return [theTextField resignFirstResponder]; } - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver: self selector: @selector(keyboardWasShown:) name: UIKeyboardDidShowNotification object: nil]; [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver: self selector: @selector(keyboardWasHidden:) name: UIKeyboardDidHideNotification object: nil]; keyboardShown = NO; // 1 [scrollView setContentSize: CGSizeMake( 320, 480)]; // 2 } - (void)keyboardWasShown:(NSNotification*)aNotification { if (keyboardShown) return; NSDictionary* info = [aNotification userInfo]; // Get the size of the keyboard. CGRect textFieldRect = [activeField frame]; [scrollView scrollRectToVisible:textFieldRect animated:YES]; keyboardShown = YES; } - (void)keyboardWasHidden:(NSNotification*)aNotification { NSDictionary* info = [aNotification userInfo]; // Get the size of the keyboard. NSValue* aValue = [info objectForKey:UIKeyboardBoundsUserInfoKey]; CGSize keyboardSize = [aValue CGRectValue].size; // Reset the height of the scroll view to its original value CGRect viewFrame = [scrollView frame]; viewFrame.size.height += keyboardSize.height; [scrollView scrollRectToVisible:CGRectMake(0, 0, 1, 1) animated:YES]; scrollView.frame = viewFrame; keyboardShown = NO; } - (void)textFieldDidBeginEditing:(UITextField *)textField { activeField = textField; } - (void)textFieldDidEndEditing:(UITextField *)textField { activeField = nil; } - (IBAction)updateText:(id) sender { NSLog(@"You just entered: %@",self.milemarkerLogDate.text); self.milemarker.logdate = self.milemarkerLogDate.text; self.milemarker.desc = self.milemarkerDesc.text; self.milemarker.odobeg = self.milemarkerOdobeg.text; self.milemarker.odoend = self.milemarkerOdoend.text; self.milemarker.business = self.milemarkerBusiness.text; self.milemarker.personal = self.milemarkerPersonal.text; NSLog(@"Original textfield is set to: %@",self.milemarker.logdate); [self.milemarker updateText]; } - (void)didReceiveMemoryWarning { // Releases the view if it doesn't have a superview. • Need help with memory leaks in RSS Reader

    - by Stilton
    I'm trying to write a simple RSS reader for the iPhone, and it appeared to be working fine, until I started working with Instruments, and discovered my App is leaking massive amounts of memory. I'm using the NSXMLParser class to parse an RSS feed. My memory leaks appear to be originating from the overridden delegate methods: - (void)parser:(NSXMLParser *)parser foundCharacters:(NSString *)string and - (void)parser:(NSXMLParser *)parser didEndElement:(NSString *)elementName namespaceURI:(NSString *)namespaceURI qualifiedName:(NSString *)qName I'm also suspicious of the code that populates the cells from my parsed data, I've included the code from those methods and a few other key ones, any insights would be greatly appreciated. - (void)parser:(NSXMLParser *)parser foundCharacters:(NSString *)string { if ([self.currentElement isEqualToString:@"title"]) { [self.currentTitle appendString:string]; } else if ([self.currentElement isEqualToString:@"link"]) { [self.currentURL appendString:string]; } else if ([self.currentElement isEqualToString:@"description"]) { [self.currentSummary appendString:string]; } } - (void)parser:(NSXMLParser *)parser didEndElement:(NSString *)elementName namespaceURI:(NSString *)namespaceURI qualifiedName:(NSString *)qName { if ([elementName isEqualToString:@"item"]) { //asdf NSMutableDictionary *item = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] init]; [item setObject:currentTitle forKey:@"title"]; [item setObject:currentURL forKey:@"URL"]; [item setObject:currentSummary forKey:@"summary"]; [self.currentTitle release]; [self.currentURL release]; [self.currentSummary release]; [self.stories addObject:item]; [item release]; } } // Customize the appearance of table view cells. - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell"; UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier] autorelease]; } // Configure the cell. // Set up the cell int index = [indexPath indexAtPosition: [indexPath length] - 1]; CGRect contentRect = CGRectMake(8.0, 4.0, 260, 20); UILabel *textLabel = [[UILabel alloc] initWithFrame:contentRect]; if (self.currentLevel == 0) { textLabel.text = [self.categories objectAtIndex: index]; } else { textLabel.text = [[self.stories objectAtIndex: index] objectForKey:@"title"]; } textLabel.textColor = [UIColor blackColor]; textLabel.font = [UIFont boldSystemFontOfSize:14]; [[cell contentView] addSubview: textLabel]; //[cell setText:[[stories objectAtIndex: storyIndex] objectForKey: @"title"]]; [textLabel autorelease]; return cell; } - (void)parser:(NSXMLParser *)parser didStartElement:(NSString *)elementName namespaceURI:(NSString *)namespaceURI qualifiedName:(NSString *)qName attributes:(NSDictionary *)attributeDict { if ([elementName isEqualToString:@"item"]) { self.currentTitle = [[NSMutableString alloc] init]; self.currentURL = [[NSMutableString alloc] init]; self.currentSummary = [[NSMutableString alloc] init]; } if (currentElement != nil) { [self.currentElement release]; } self.currentElement = [elementName copy]; } - (void)dealloc { [currentElement release]; [currentTitle release]; [currentURL release]; [currentSummary release]; [currentDate release]; [stories release]; [rssParser release]; [storyTable release]; [super dealloc]; } // Override to support row selection in the table view. - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { // Navigation logic may go here -- for example, create and push another view controller. // AnotherViewController *anotherViewController = [[AnotherViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"AnotherView" bundle:nil]; int index = [indexPath indexAtPosition: [indexPath length] - 1]; if (currentLevel == 1) { StoryViewController *storyViewController = [[StoryViewController alloc] initWithURL:[[stories objectAtIndex: index] objectForKey:@"URL"] nibName:@"StoryViewController" bundle:nil]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:storyViewController animated:YES]; [storyViewController release]; } else { RootViewController *rvController = [[RootViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"RootViewController" bundle:nil]; rvController.currentLevel = currentLevel + 1; rvController.rssIndex = index; [self.navigationController pushViewController:rvController animated:YES]; [rvController release]; } }

  • objective-c Novice - Needs help with global variables and setter method

    - by user544006
    I am creating a quiz app which has 2 views, MMAppViewController and a subview Level1View. I have declared NSInteger property "theScore" in the MMAppViewController view and have synthesised it. In my Level1View when they answer a correct question the "theScore" int will increase by one. The score has to be a global variable because when you reach so many points it will unlock the next level. For some reason in my switch statement it only lets me use the setTheScore method once. I am getting errors for every other set method in the switch statement. Error: "Duplicate label setTheScore". The statement is in the pushButtonAnswer method: setTheScore: theScore++; Here is my code: #import "Level1View.h" #import "MMAppViewController.h" @implementation Level1View @synthesize answer; @synthesize question; @synthesize userAnswer; @synthesize theScore; @synthesize score; int questionNum=0; NSInteger score=0; NSInteger theScore; BOOL start=FALSE; BOOL optionNum=FALSE; -(IBAction)pushBack{ [self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; } -(IBAction)pushButton1{ optionNum=TRUE; labelAnswer.textColor=[UIColor blackColor]; userAnswer=@"1"; [labelAnswer setText:(@"You chose 'A'")]; } -(IBAction)pushButton2{ optionNum=TRUE; labelAnswer.textColor=[UIColor blackColor]; userAnswer=@"2"; [labelAnswer setText:(@"You chose 'B'")]; } -(IBAction)pushButton3{ optionNum=TRUE; labelAnswer.textColor=[UIColor blackColor]; userAnswer=@"3"; [labelAnswer setText:(@"You chose 'C'")]; } -(IBAction)pushButtonAnswer{ labelAnswer.textColor=[UIColor blackColor]; switch (questionNum){ case 1: if(answer==userAnswer && optionNum==TRUE){ labelAnswer.textColor=[UIColor greenColor]; [labelAnswer setText:(@"correct")]; [self hideButtons]; score++; [self setTheScore: theScore++]; } else if(optionNum==FALSE){ [labelAnswer setText:(@"Please choose an answer below:")];} else{ labelAnswer.textColor=[UIColor redColor]; [labelAnswer setText:(@"wrong")];} [self hideButtons]; break; case 2: if(answer==userAnswer && optionNum==TRUE){ labelAnswer.textColor=[UIColor greenColor]; [labelAnswer setText:(@"correct")]; [self hideButtons]; score++; [self setTheScore: theScore++]; } else if(optionNum==FALSE){ [labelAnswer setText:(@"Please choose an answer below:")];} else{ labelAnswer.textColor=[UIColor redColor]; [labelAnswer setText:(@"wrong")]; [self hideButtons];} break; case 3: if(answer==userAnswer && optionNum==TRUE){ labelAnswer.textColor=[UIColor greenColor]; .... And #import "MMAppViewController.h" #import "Level1View.h" @implementation MMAppViewController @synthesize theScore; NSInteger score; -(IBAction)pushLevel1{ Level1View *level1View = [[Level1View alloc] initWithNibName:nil bundle:nil]; [self presentModalViewController:level1View animated:YES]; theScore++; } -(IBAction)pushLevel2{ //Level1View *level1View = [[Level1View alloc] initWithNibName:nil bundle:nil]; //[self presentModalViewController:level1View animated:YES]; NSInteger *temp = Level1View.score; //int theScore=2; [labelChoose setText:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"You scored %i", theScore]]; } Does anyone know why i am getting these errors and if I am coding this correctly?

    Hi, all, I want to create a scroll view and put thumbnail view in that scroll view. but I can not get the touchBegan message in my program. My source code is like following. - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; NSError* error; NSString *bundleRoot = [[NSBundle mainBundle] bundlePath]; dirContents = [[[NSFileManager defaultManager] contentsOfDirectoryAtPath:bundleRoot error: &error] copy]; scrollView = [[UIScrollView alloc] initWithFrame:[[self view] bounds]]; scrollView.pagingEnabled = YES; scrollView.showsHorizontalScrollIndicator = NO; scrollView.userInteractionEnabled = YES; scrollView.clipsToBounds = YES; // default is NO, we want to restrict drawing within our scrollview scrollView.scrollEnabled = YES; [scrollView setDelegate:self]; [[self view] addSubview:scrollView]; DLog(@"scroll frame top = %d, left = %d, width = %d, height = %d", scrollView.frame.origin.x, scrollView.frame.origin.y, scrollView.frame.size.width, scrollView.frame.size.height); int i, j; UIView* onePageView = [[UIView alloc] init]; int pageNumber = 0; int iconNumber = 0; for (NSString *tString in dirContents) { if ([tString hasSuffix:@"_chess.png"]) { if(iconNumber == 9) { onePageView.tag = pageNumber + 1; [scrollView addSubview: onePageView]; onePageView = [[UIView alloc] init]; pageNumber++; iconNumber = 0; } j = iconNumber % 3; i = iconNumber / 3; const float WIDTH = 150.0; const float HEIGHT = 150.0; CGRect imageRect = CGRectMake(j * 200 + 50.0, i * 200 + 50.0, WIDTH, HEIGHT); //remove the charactors of "_chess.png".   • How to remove CRUD operations from Entity Class

    - by GlutVonSmark
    Trying to get my head around removing dataStore access from my entity classes. Lets say I have an AccountsGroup entity class. I put the all DBAccess into AccountsGroupRepository class. Now should I have a DeleteFromDB method in the AccountsGroup class, that will call the repository? Public Sub DeleteFromDB dim repository as new AccountsGroupRepository(me) repository.DelteFromDB End Sub Or should I just always use repositry whenever I need to delete an entity, and not have the CRUD methods in the entity class? What happens when there is some business logic validation that needs to be done before the delete can proceed. For example if AccountsGroup still has some Accounts in it the delete method should throw an exception. Where do I put that?

  • Install the Ajax Control Toolkit from NuGet

    - by Stephen Walther
    The Ajax Control Toolkit is now available from NuGet. This makes it super easy to add the latest version of the Ajax Control Toolkit to any Web Forms application. If you haven’t used NuGet yet, then you are missing out on a great tool which you can use with Visual Studio to add new features to an application. You can use NuGet with both ASP.NET MVC and ASP.NET Web Forms applications. NuGet is compatible with both Websites and Web Applications and it works with both C# and VB.NET applications. For example, I habitually use NuGet to add the latest version of ELMAH, Entity Framework, jQuery, jQuery UI, and jQuery Templates to applications that I create. To download NuGet, visit the NuGet website at: http://NuGet.org Imagine, for example, that you want to take advantage of the Ajax Control Toolkit RoundedCorners extender to create cross-browser compatible rounded corners in a Web Forms application. Follow these steps. Right click on your project in the Solution Explorer window and select the option Add Library Package Reference. In the Add Library Package Reference dialog, select the Online tab and enter AjaxControlToolkit in the search box: Click the Install button and the latest version of the Ajax Control Toolkit will be installed. Installing the Ajax Control Toolkit makes several modifications to your application. First, a reference to the Ajax Control Toolkit is added to your application. In a Web Application Project, you can see the new reference in the References folder: Installing the Ajax Control Toolkit NuGet package also updates your Web.config file. The tag prefix ajaxToolkit is registered so that you can easily use Ajax Control Toolkit controls within any page without adding a @Register directive to the page. <configuration> <system.web> <compilation debug="true" targetFramework="4.0" /> <pages> <controls> <add tagPrefix="ajaxToolkit" assembly="AjaxControlToolkit" namespace="AjaxControlToolkit" /> </controls> </pages> </system.web> </configuration> You should do a rebuild of your application by selecting the Visual Studio menu option Build, Rebuild Solution so that Visual Studio picks up on the new controls (You won’t get Intellisense for the Ajax Control Toolkit controls until you do a build). After you add the Ajax Control Toolkit to your application, you can start using any of the 40 Ajax Control Toolkit controls in your application (see http://www.asp.net/ajax/ajaxcontroltoolkit/samples/ for a reference for the controls). <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="WebForm1.aspx.cs" Inherits="WebApplication1.WebForm1" %> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head runat="server"> <title>Rounded Corners</title> <style type="text/css"> #pnl1 { background-color: gray; width: 200px; color:White; font: 14pt Verdana; } #pnl1_contents { padding: 10px; } </style> </head> <body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <div> <asp:Panel ID="pnl1" runat="server"> <div id="pnl1_contents"> I have rounded corners! </div> </asp:Panel> <ajaxToolkit:ToolkitScriptManager ID="sm1" runat="server" /> <ajaxToolkit:RoundedCornersExtender TargetControlID="pnl1" runat="server" /> </div> </form> </body> </html> The page contains the following three controls: Panel – The Panel control named pnl1 contains the content which appears with rounded corners. ToolkitScriptManager – Every page which uses the Ajax Control Toolkit must contain a single ToolkitScriptManager. The ToolkitScriptManager loads all of the JavaScript files used by the Ajax Control Toolkit. RoundedCornersExtender – This Ajax Control Toolkit extender targets the Panel control. It makes the Panel control appear with rounded corners. You can control the “roundiness” of the corners by modifying the Radius property. Notice that you get Intellisense when typing the Ajax Control Toolkit tags. As soon as you type <ajaxToolkit, all of the available Ajax Control Toolkit controls appear: When you open the page in a browser, then the contents of the Panel appears with rounded corners. The advantage of using the RoundedCorners extender is that it is cross-browser compatible. It works great with Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari even though different browsers implement rounded corners in different ways. The RoundedCorners extender even works with an ancient browser such as Internet Explorer 6. Getting the Latest Version of the Ajax Control Toolkit The Ajax Control Toolkit continues to evolve at a rapid pace. We are hard at work at fixing bugs and adding new features to the project. We plan to have a new release of the Ajax Control Toolkit each month. The easiest way to get the latest version of the Ajax Control Toolkit is to use NuGet. You can open the NuGet Add Library Package Reference dialog at any time to update the Ajax Control Toolkit to the latest version.

  • What are best practices when switching between projects/coming back to projects frequently?

    - by dj444
    The nature of my job is that I have to switch back and forth between projects every few weeks. I find that one of the biggest impediments to my productivity is the ramp-up time to getting all the relevant pieces of code "back in my head" again after not seeing it for a period. This happens to a smaller and larger extent for briefer breaks / longer breaks. Obviously, good design, documentation, commenting, and physical structure all help with this (not to mention switching between projects as infrequently as possible). But I'm wondering if there are practices/tools that I may be missing out on. What are your specific practices for improving on this?

  • How do you share your craft with non programmers?

    - by EpsilonVector
    Sometimes I feel like a musician who can't play live shows. Programming is a pretty cool skill, and a very broad world, but a lot of it happens "off camera"- in your head, in your office, away from spectators. You can of course talk about programming with other programmers, and there is peer programming, and you do get to create something that you can show to people, but when it comes to explaining to non programmers what is it that you do, or how was your day at work, it's sort of tricky. How do you get the non programmers in your life to understand what is it that you do? NOTE: this is not a repeat of Getting non-programmers to understand the development process, because that question was about managing client expectations.

  • Day 2 - Game Design Documentation

    - by dapostolov
    So yesterday I didn't cut any code for my game but I was able to do a tiny bit of research on the XNA Game Development Technology and the communities out there and do you know what? I feel I'm a bit closer to my goal. The bad news is today I didn't cut code either. However, not all is lost because I wanted to get my ideas on paper and today I just did that.  Today, I began to jot down notes about the game and how I felt the visual elements would interact with each other. Unlike my workplace, my personal level of documentation is nothing more than a task list or a mind map of my ideas; it helps me streamline my solutions quiet effectively and circumvent the long process of articulating each thought to the n-th degree. I truly dislike documentation (because I have an extremely hard time articulating my thought and solutions); however, because I tend to do a really good job with documentation I tend to get stuck writing the buggers. But as a generalist remark: 'No Developer likes documentation.' For now let's stick with my basic notes and call this post a living document. Here are my notes, fresh, from after watching the new first episode of Merlin second season! Actually, a quick recommendation to anyone who is reading this (if anyone is): I truly recommend you envelope yourself in the medium or task you're trying to tackle. Be one with moment and feel it! For instance: Are you writing a fantasy script / game? What would the music of the genre sound like? For me the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack by Basil Poledouris is frackin awesome. There are many other good CD's out there, which I listen to (some who even use medival instruments, but Conan I keep returning to. It's a creative trigger for me. Ask yourself what would the imagery look like? Time to surf google for artist renditions of fantasy! What would the game feel like? Start playing some of your favorite games that inspire you, be wary though, have some self control and don't let it absorb your time. Anyhow, onto the documentation... Screens, Scenes, and Sprites. Oh My! (groan...) The first thing that came to mind were the screens, I thought the following would suffice: Menu Screen Character Customisation Screen Loading Screen? Battle Ground The Menu Screen Ok. So, the thought here is when the game loads a huge title is displayed: Wizard Wars. The player is prompted with 3 menu items: 1 Player Game, 2 Player Game, and Exit. Since I'm targetting the PC platform, as a non-networked game to start, I picture myself running my mouse over each menu option and the visual element of the menu item changes, along with a sound to indicate that I am over a curent menu item. And as I move my mouse away, it changes back, and possibly an exit mouse sound. Maybe on the screen somewhere is a brazier alit with a magical tome open right beside it, OR, maybe the tome is the menu! I hear the menu music as mellow, not obtrusive or piercing. On a menu item select, a confirmation sound bellows to indicate the players selection. The Esc key will always return me to the previous screens or desktop. The menu screen must feel...dark, like a really important ritual is about to happen and thus the music should build up. 1 Player Game - > Customize Character(s) 2 Player Game - > Customize Character(s) Exit - > Back to Windows Notes: So the first thing I pick up here are a couple things: First and foremost, my artistic abilities suck crap, so I may have to hire an artist (now that i've said that, lets get techy) graphical objects will be positioned within a scene on each screen / window. Menu items will be represented grapically, possibly animated, and have sound / animation effects triggered by user input or a time line. I have an animated scene involving a brazier or fire on a stick IF I was to move this game to the xbox, I'd have to track which menu item is currently selected (unless I do a mouse pointer type thing.) WindowObject has a scene A Scene has many GameObjects GameObject has a position graphic or animation MenuObject is a GameObject which has a mouse in, mouse out, and click event which either does something graphically (animation), does something with sound, or moves to another screen.  Character Customisation Screen With either the 1 or 2 player option selected, both selections will come to this screen; a wizard requires a name, powers, and vestements of course! Player one will configure his character first and then player two. I considered a split screen for PC but to have two people fighting over a keyboard would probably suck. For XBox, a split screen could work; maybe when I get into the networking portion (phase 2 blog?) of this game I will remove the 2 player option for PC and provide only multiplayer and I will leave 2 player for xbox...hmm... Anyhow...I picture the creation process as follows: Name: (textbox / keyboard entry) - for xbox, this would have to be different. Robe Color: (color box, or something) Stats: Speed, Oomph, and Health. (as sliders) 1 as minimum and 10 as maximum. Ok, Back, and Cancel buttons / options. Each stat has a benefit which are listed below. The idea is the player decides if he wants his wizard to run fast, be a tank and ... hit with a purse.Regardless, the player will have a pool of 12 points to use. Ideally, A balanced wizard will have 5 in each attribute. Spells? The only spell of choice is a ball of fire which comes without question. The music and screen should still feel like a ritual. The Character Speed Basically, how fast your character moves and casts. Oomph (Best Monster Truck Voice): PURE POWAH!!! The damage output of your fireball. Health How much damage you can take. Notes: I realise the game dynamics may sound uninteresting at the moment; but I think after a couple releases, we could have some other grand ideas such as: saved profiles, gold to upgrade arsenal of spells, talents, etc...but for now...a vanilla fireball thrower mage will suffice for this experiment. OK. So... a MenuObject  may need to be loosely coupled to allow future items such as networking? may be a button? a CharacterObject has a name speed oomph health and a funky robe color. cap on the three stats (1-10) an arsenal of 1 spell (possibly could expand this) The Loading Screen As is. The Battleground Screen For now, I'm keeping the screen as max resolution for the PC. The screen isn't going to move or even be a split screen. I'm not aiming high here because I want to see what level of change is involved when new features / concepts are added to game content. I'm interested to find out if we could apply techniques such as MVC or MVVM to this type of development or is it too tightly coupled? This reminds me when when my best friend and I were brainstorming our game idea (this is going back a while...1994, 6?) and he cringed at the thought of bringing business technology into games, especially when I suggested a database to store character information and COM / DCOM as the medium, but it seems I wasn't far off (reflecting); just like his implementation of a xml "config file" for dynamic direct-x menus back before .net in 1999...anyhow...i digress... The Battle One screen, two characters lobing balls of fire at each other...It doesn't get better than that. Every so often a scroll appears...and the fireballs bounce off walls, or the wizard has rapid fire, or even scrolls of healing! The scroll options are endless. Two bars at the top, each the color of the wizard (with their name beside the bar) indicate how much health they have. Possibly the appearance of the scrolls means the battle is taking too long? I'm thinking 1 player controls: up, down, left, right and space to fire the button. Or even possibly, mouse click and shift - mouse button to fire a spell in the direction they are facing. Two player controls: a, s, d, f and space AND arrows (up, down, left, right) and Del key or Crtl. The game ends when a player has 0 health and a dialog box appears asking for a rematch / reconfigure / exit. Health goes down when a fireball (friendly or not), connects with a wizard. When a wizard connects with a scroll, a countdown clock / icon appears near the health bar and the wizard begins to glow. For the most part, a wizard can have only scroll 1 effect on him at a time. Notes: Ok, there's alot to cover here. a CharacterObject is a GameObject it travels at a set velocity it travels in a direction it has sounds (walking, running, casting, impact, dying, laughing, whistling, other?) it has animations (walking, running, casting, impact, dying, laughing, idle, other?) it has a lifespan (determined by health) it is alive or dead it has a position a ScrollObject is a GameObject it carries a transferance of points "damage" (or healing, bad scroll effect?) (determinde by caster) it carries a transferance of "other" it is stationary it has a sound on impact it has a stationary animation it has an impact animation / or transfers an impact animation it has a fade animation? it has a lifespan (determined by game) it is alive or dead it has a position a WallObject is a GameObject it has a sound on fireball impact? it is a still image / stationary it has an impact animation / or transfers an impact animation it is dead it has a position A FireBall is a GameObject it carries a transferance of poinst "damage" (or healing, bad scroll effect?) (determinde by caster) it travels at a set velocity it travels in a direction it has a sound it has a travel animation it has an impact animation / or transfers an impact animation it has a fade animation? it has a lifespan (determined by caster) it is alive or dead it has a position As I look at this, I can see some common attributes in each object that I can carry up to the GameObject. I think I'm going to end the documentation here, it's taken me a bit of time to type this all out, tomorrow. I'll load up my IDE and my paint studio to get some good old fashioned cowboy hacking going!   D.

  • SOLVED: Error 1 Ticks must be between DateTime.MinValue.Ticks and DateTime.MaxValue.Ticks

    This is a simple looking error message that is deceptively hard to track down. Thankfully if you're having this problem then this article should get you back on track without spending hours scratching your head. Scenario It was time to update an existing website so after synchronising my copy of the site with the server I was ready to make my changes. The only problem was that every time I tried to compile the site I was getting an error: Error 1 Ticks must be between DateTime.MinValue.Ticks...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • C# Multithreading Interview questions for a senior developer/designer position.

    - by Mohit Bhandari
    I know there have been a great deal of interview questions posted on SO and specifically i like the post "Good C# interview questions for a Senior developer position" But i really wondered what sort of interview questions were asked to a senior developer or technical consultant on multithreading. Kindly provide me some of the interview questions which were asked in the interview on multithreading if possible kindly put the scenario based questions with some theoretical questions. As I came to know after disscusion with some of the people that some time interviewer might give you a scenario and ask you to implement it? @ Kindly add the specific questions which you have ever faced or asked to the other person in the interview other than only mentioning the concepts because people go through the concepts and still find it difficult to handle the interview questions.so any effort to add the specific question could actually help person to get a head start for the d-day

  • What is SharePoint Out of the Box?

    - by Bil Simser
    It’s always fun in the blog-o-sphere and SharePoint bloggers always keep the pot boiling. Bjorn Furuknap recently posted a blog entry titled Why Out-of-the-Box Makes No Sense in SharePoint, quickly followed up by a rebuttal by Marc Anderson on his blog. Okay, now that we have all the players and the stage what’s the big deal? Bjorn started his post saying that you don’t use “out-of-the-box” (OOTB) SharePoint because it makes no sense. I have to disagree with his premise because what he calls OOTB is basically installing SharePoint and admiring it, but not using it. In his post he lays claim that modifying say the OOTB contacts list by removing (or I suppose adding) a column, now puts you in a situation where you’re no longer using the OOTB functionality. Really? Side note. Dear Internet, please stop comparing building software to building houses. Or comparing software architecture to building architecture. Or comparing web sites to making dinner. Are you trying to dumb down something so the general masses understand it? Comparing a technical skill to a construction operation isn’t the way to do this. Last time I checked, most people don’t know how to build houses and last time I checked people reading technical SharePoint blogs are generally technical people that understand the terms you use. Putting metaphors around software development to make it easy to understand is detrimental to the goal. </rant> Okay, where were we? Right, adding columns to lists means you are no longer using the OOTB functionality. Yeah, I still don’t get it. Another statement Bjorn makes is that using the OOTB functionality kills the flexibility SharePoint has in creating exactly what you want. IMHO this really flies in the absolute face of *where* SharePoint *really* shines. For the past year or so I’ve been leaning more and more towards OOTB solutions over custom development for the simple reason that its expensive to maintain systems and code and assets. SharePoint has enabled me to do this simply by providing the tools where I can give users what they need without cracking open up Visual Studio. This might be the fact that my day job is with a regulated company and there’s more scrutiny with spending money on anything new, but frankly that should be the position of any responsible developer, architect, manager, or PM. Do you really want to throw money away because some developer tells you that you need a custom web part when perhaps with some creative thinking or expectation setting with customers you can meet the need with what you already have. The way I read Bjorn’s terminology of “out-of-the-box” is install the software and tell people to go to a website and admire the OOTB system, but don’t change it! For those that know things like WordPress, DotNetNuke, SubText, Drupal or any of those content management/blogging systems, its akin to installing the software and setting up the “Hello World” blog post or page, then staring at it like it’s useful. “Yes, we are using WordPress!”. Then not adding a new post, creating a new category, or adding an About page. Perhaps I’m wrong in my interpretation. This leads us to what is OOTB SharePoint? To many people I’ve talked to the last few hours on twitter, email, etc. it is *not* just installing software but actually using it as it was fit for purpose. What’s the purpose of SharePoint then? It has many purposes, but using the OOTB templates Microsoft has given you the ability to collaborate on projects, author/share/publish documents, create pages, track items/contacts/tasks/etc. in a multi-user web based interface, and so on. Microsoft has pretty clear definitions of these different levels of SharePoint we’re talking about and I think it’s important for everyone to know what they are and what they mean. Personalization and Administration To me, this is the OOTB experience. You install the product and then are able to do things like create new lists, sites, edit and personalize pages, create new views, etc. Basically use the platform services available to you with Windows SharePoint Services (or SharePoint Foundation in 2010) to your full advantage. No code, no special tools needed, and very little user training required. Could you take someone who has never done anything in a website or piece of software and unleash them onto a site? Probably not. However I would argue that anyone who’s configured the Outlook reading layout or applied styles to a Word document probably won’t have too much difficulty in using SharePoint OUT OF THE BOX. Customization Here’s where things might get a bit murky but to me this is where you start looking at HTML/ASPX page code through SharePoint Designer, using jQuery scripts and plugging them into Web Part Pages via a Content Editor Web Part, and generally enhancing the site. The JavaScript debate might kick in here claiming it’s no different than C#, and frankly you can totally screw a site up with jQuery on a CEWP just as easily as you can with a C# delegate control deployed to the server file system. However (again, my blog, my opinion) the customization label comes in when I need to access the server (for example creating a custom theme) or have some kind of net-new element I add to the system that wasn’t there OOTB. It’s not content (like a new list or site), it’s code and does something functional. Development Here’s were the propeller hats come on and we’re talking algorithms and unit tests and compilers oh my. Software is deployed to the server, people are writing solutions after some kind of training (perhaps), there might be some specialized tools they use to craft and deploy the solutions, there’s the possibility of exceptions being thrown, etc. There are a lot of definitions here and just like customization it might get murky (do you let non-developers build solutions using development, i.e. jQuery/C#?). In my experience, it’s much more cost effective keeping solutions under the first two umbrellas than leaping into the third one. Arguably you could say that you can’t build useful solutions without *some* kind of code (even just some simple jQuery). I think you can get a *lot* of value just from using the OOTB experience and I don’t think you’re constraining your users that much. I’m not saying Marc or Bjorn are wrong. Like Obi-Wan stated, they’re both correct “from a certain point of view”. To me, SharePoint Out of the Box makes total sense and should not be dismissed. I just don’t agree with the premise that Bjorn is basing his statements on but that’s just my opinion and his is different and never the twain shall meet.
