• 11.10 runs really choppy and slow, but not if I choose "Gnome Classic"

  I'd like to use Unity with Ubuntu 11.10, but everything from Unity runs really choppy and slow. I have an ATI graphics card and I have installed the drivers through "Additional Drivers". The drivers work, as I can play 3d games flawlessly. When I drag the mouse box around or drag windows around, it is really choppy. I previously had Ubuntu 10.10 and everything worked fine. I installed gnome 3 on 11.10 and it does the same thing Unity does, very choppy and slow graphics. However, if I choose Gnome Classic, everything is fine. I can drag the mouse box all around with no problems. I can drag windows around and it looks and feels great. Is this a bug with Unity? Are others experiencing this? Or is there something I can do to fix this?

• Will a programming professional certificate from a university enhance my resume/prospect for being hired?

I'm planning to take up an Online Certification in web programming or .NET programming from the University of Illinois through O'Reilly (see link) to keep busy this summer. Will that help me get a great job? I've heard some say that certifications will give you a cutting edge. I've heard others say that it doesn't really matter. What do you think? • YouTube Releases Native Wii App

  Watching YouTube videos on the Wii just got a whole lot easier; YouTube’s native Wii app streamlines the process and cuts out the need for the Internet Channel browser. Previous to this release you had to use the $5 Internet Channel and the Opera Browser to access YouTube. It worked but it wasn’t elegant by any means. The new YouTube Wii app sports a clean interface, simple Wiimote-based controls, and all the great YouTube content you can handle. The app is free but currently U.S. only. • How much server bandwidth does an average RTS game require per month?

  My friend and I are going to write a multiplayer, multiplatform RTS game and are currently analyzing the costs of going with a client-server architecture. The game will have a small map with mostly characters, not buildings (think of DotA or League of Legends). The authoritative game logic will run on the server and message packet sizes will be highly optimized. We'd like to know approximately how much server bandwidth our proposed RTS game would use on a monthly basis, considering these theoretical constants: 100 concurrent users maximum 8 players maximum per game 10 ticks per second Bonus: If you can tell us approximately how much server RAM this kind of game would use that would also help a great deal. • Microsoft LifeCam Audio Issue

  Running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32-bit on a computer with an Intel core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and a NVIDIA 450GTS Graphics card. I am trying to set up Skype with my webcam. So far everything works almost perfectly, however my Microsoft LifeCam-VX700 v2.0 audio does not work correctly. The audio feed is just static/white noise. I have checked the hardware using windows and it worked perfectly there. The video works great in Ubuntu. It is just the audio that is the problem. What can I do to rectify this problem?

• is box-shadow (CSS3) really not ready to use? (according to "CAN I USE")

  I have a problem that I want you to help me, I am currently making a website, I am building that website on HTML5 and CSS3 technology, every feature I'd like to use I check it first in "CAN I USE", the technology I use most is box-shadow, and I already made some great things with it but, I have a doubt about the percentage of browser that don't support that technology, the percentage of browser that do not support box-shadow is around 17.12%, and if you see the conclusions (show options = other options = show conclusions) they say that that feature isn't ready yet because they are "Waiting for Opera Mini 5.0-6.0 to expire", I personally think that the best that we can do in order to make people update their browsers is not support older browser, but ... am I right thinking like this? will I have bad consecuences if I don't support older browsers? is worth to work twice just to support older browsers? should I still working with box-shadow?

• When will microsoft release IE9? [closed]

  I was one of those people early on to try their IE9 beta, and it was terribly buggy. It still does function horribly. IMO any windows release after 5(2k,nt,xp) absolutely sux the life out of my resources compared to RPM linux(opensuse), until at least service pack 2. MS is trying to push HTML5/CSS3 and they cannot pass the Acid 3 test. I am wondering when IE9 will become functional. I am a big supported of MS applications. I have a great amount of adoration for IIS7 because they have support for CGI/PHP. Is IE9 going to be released before 2012?

• Real performance of node.js

  I've got a question concerning node.js performance. There is quite lot of "benchmarks" and a lot of fuss about great performance of node.js. But how does it stand in real world? Not just process empty request at high speed. If someone could try to compare this scenario: Java (or equivalent) server running an application with complex business logic between receiving request and sending response. How would node.js deal with it? If there was need for a lot of JavaScript processing on server side, is node.js really so fast that it can execute JavaScript, and stand a chance against more heavyveight competitors?

• Is there a way to group 2 or 3 gui windows so that they don't get lost behind other open windows?

  For instance floating panels and main window in Gimp are independent windows. If I change focus to a full window (e.g. Firefox by doing Alt-Shift) and go back to the main Gimp window I don't get back the floating panels also (I have to change to them as well in order to see them). It would be great if the 3 windows can be "tied" (or linked) together in order that they don't get lost behind other open windows when I change back to (make active window) any of them? I think this configuration (if it exists) should show itself more obviously in the gnome environment. This question seems to address the same problem but it doesn't seem to be accurately answered.

• SQL Auto Close Options

  Found an interesting thing that others have run across but it is the first time I’ve seen it. A customer emailed to say that the SQL 2008 db that I had helped him with seemed to be going into recovery mode on a regular basis while watching the SQL Management Studio screen. Needless to say he was a bit nervous and about to take some drastic steps. Eventually he found that the Auto Close option was set to true. When this is set to true, the database automatically closes all connections and unlocks the mdf file after 300 milliseconds. When a new connection is made it spins backup… Great for xcopy deployment on a client machine but not a multi-user server based application. So the warning… if you have started a database with SQL express and then move it to a production SQL server, make sure you check that the Auto Close option is set to false. See options screen below:

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04, the first thing I'm trying to do, is to setup my wireless adapter. I can see it using lsusb: beer@beer-linux:~$ lsusb ... Bus 002 Device 006: ID 0846:9020 NetGear, Inc. WNA3100(v1) Wireless-N 300 [Broadcom BCM43231] ... I have found a lot of dated instructions on the net and just wanted to know what the right way is to set it up on 12.04. I don't want to mess up a brand new install by tweaking things that don't need tweaking. According to most posts, you have to install the Windows drivers using the ndiswrapper package. Is this still the right way to go? If so, it would be great if someone could write down the steps to do this under 12.04

• Cannot Update through Manager or Terminal/ Software Center Does Not Work

  I installed Tor a few days ago via the terminal. I deleted some hashtags in the gedit polipo, and changed my proxy settings in chrome, but was unable to make it work and have since changed all of it back. I then downloaded the Tor browser bundle which works great, but ever since then have been unable to download updates or new software. The update manager says to "check internet connection" and the software center displays a mostly blank screen under apps like "rhythmbox" and just says "available from main source" when I click on "use this source" a refresh symbol appears on the upper right corner of the software center for a split second, and then nothing happens. The app does not download and isn't available in the dash. When I try via the terminal it says it's unable to connect to my ip address. I tried changing the server and unchecking all the repository options for software sources, all to no avail. WHAT DID I DO?????

• Authorization pop-up requested by http://localhost:51675 every time I run Firefox

  Using Ubuntu 10.04. Whenever I run Firefox I get a pop up requesting authorisation. It says 'a user name and password are being requested by http://localhost:51675. The site says "server" I have tried all passwords I know and nothing is accepted. If I click 'cancel' it disappears but re-appears after about 5 minutes. This whole 'experience' is accompanied by a great deal of hard disc activity. Can anyone help with this?

• Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed"

  After 10+ years of java/c# programming, I find myself creating either: abstract classes: contract not meant to be instantiated as-is. final/sealed classes: implementation not meant to serve as base class to something else. I can't think of any situation where a simple "class" (i.e. neither abstract nor final/sealed) would be "wise programming". Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed" ? • Skills for RAD developer.

  I am about to embark on an exquisite journey. I have applied for an event, where in span of 48 straight hours, strangers meet, throw around some great ideas, decide on teams, and make a working prototype of IT project. All within 48 hours. I anticipate, that this will be very skill and ability intensive experience, and I want to be prepared. Since i will need to develop my part of the code quickly, I have a following question: What would be the most needed skills for these 48 hours? I do know, that things like proper documentation, version control and such are pretty important for a full fledged application/program/web development, but for this span of frantic coding? Background: I am a web developer, so answers applicable to web development would be more appreciated than others.
