• Skype no sound on Kubuntu 13.10

  I just performed a fresh install of Kubuntu 13.10 on my machine. Everything is working great except for Skype. I cannot get any form of audio playback in Skype. In the sound settings panel I get a bunch of different sound sources, none of which work! At the moment I have set it to "sysdefault (unknown)" I installed it using the deb package found on the official website. My phonon backend is using phonon-gstreamer.   I am about to embark on an exquisite journey. I have applied for an event, where in span of 48 straight hours, strangers meet, throw around some great ideas, decide on teams, and make a working prototype of IT project. All within 48 hours. I anticipate, that this will be very skill and ability intensive experience, and I want to be prepared. Since i will need to develop my part of the code quickly, I have a following question: What would be the most needed skills for these 48 hours? I do know, that things like proper documentation, version control and such are pretty important for a full fledged application/program/web development, but for this span of frantic coding? Background: I am a web developer, so answers applicable to web development would be more appreciated than others.

• Who Moved My Cheese DotNetNuke Edition

  Last week, I discussed a new change in 5.4 where we have backported the RibbonBar from DotNetNuke Professional to the Community Edition. Well that is not the only big change that is occurring with this release. We are also backporting the Telerik Editor Provider! This is another huge win for the community. Over the course of the last 7 years we have primarily had 2 different HTML editors that we have shipped with DotNetNuke. The first text editor we used was FreeTextBox. • Why are interfaces useful?

  I have been studying and coding in C# for some time now. But still, I can't figure the usefulness of Interfaces. They bring too little to the table. Other than providing the signatures of function, they do nothing. If I can remember the names and signature of the functions which are needed to be implemented, there is no need for them. They are there just to make sure that the said functions(in the interface) are implemented in the inheriting class. C# is a great language, but sometimes it gives you the feeling that first Microsoft creates the problem (not allowing multiple inheritance) and then provides the solution, which is rather a tedious one. That's my understanding which is based on limited coding experience. What's your take on interfaces? How often you make uses of them and what makes you do so?

• Lenovo Y460 heats up with Ubuntu 11.10

  I'm new with Ubuntu and I'm enjoying my experience with Ubuntu 11.10 on my Lenovo ideapad Y460. I'm dual booting Ubuntu with Windows 7 64 bit. It's great using Ubuntu, however I noticed that my laptop heats up rather quickly when I use Ubuntu. Does this have to do with drivers? I have Nvidia GT 425M graphics, but I don't know if this information is relevant. My fans are just not working right as they do in Windows 7. Did I miss installing something or what am I doing wrong?

• New EFI Laptop: After restart, Ubuntu boots to black screen?

  So, I've got this new laptop (Acer Aspire 5560 15") that's doing a funny thing.. If I cold booth the machine, everything is great! I see the grub menu, and Ubuntu 12.04 loads just fine. If I reboot within Ubuntu, I see the BIOS screen, but then nothing. No grub menu, no hard drive activity except for just a blip. I noticed that when installing Ubuntu this time, I had to create an EFI boot partition -- something I'm not used to. And I'm guessing that it has something to do with the issue. Could be totally wrong. Any ideas?

• Samsung driver for notebooks in Natty?

  Hi, I have a Samsung N150 Netbook and I installed Unity 11.04 to make some tests. But some functions do not work like backlight and vertical scroll on the touchpad. There are drivers for samsung notbooks and I know that there is a PPA. But not for Natty. Will the drivers be avalible some day in the kernel by default? Will Canonical add these drivers in the kernel, if the Kernel developers wont? I think this would be very usefull because Unity is great for Netbooks and Samsung Netbooks are really nice.

And here comes the problem - there are many developers who look really great at the interview, seem to know the technology you need and have a good job background, but after two moths of work, you find out that they are not able to work in a team, writing some code takes them very long time, and moreover, the result is not as good as it should be. So, do you use any formalized tests (are there any?)? How do you recognize a good programmer - and a good person? Are there any simple 'good' questions that might reveal the future problems? ...or is it just about your 'feeling' about the person (ie., mainly your experience), and trying him out? • Configuration of the network manager via DBus: how to set the ad hoc mode

  I have an hard nut to crack: a nice bottle of italian Chianti wine to the solver! :) To automatically configure Wifi, I first have to kill the network manager and than activate the wifi via the commandline: I do this all automatically in my application and works great. However... it is not the right way to do this. As the user has no network gui anymore to configure some other network access. A much better and transparent way would be to configure wifi directly via network manager over the DBus interface. I was able to configure it, but I wasn't able to set it to ad hoc mode... Searching the web for a while: a lot about configuration in general but nothing related to ad hoc mode. I think the only way to do figure that out is to look into the source code of the network manager...maybe someone already did it and he can answer.

• Bluetooth mouse lag on high cpu load ubuntu 11.04 12.10

  I have just migrate to Ubuntu 12.10 and I have noticed that I have huge problem with my bluetooth mouse left click button on a high load (wired, but scroll and right button are not affected) (I think powersave cpu mode affect that more than cpu load) It just not "trigger the interrupt". Mouse is laggy, click are not reggisterd. I can not work like that. At the same time, my touchpad and usb mouse works great. How to check that - limit cpu frequency (I use powersave and ondemend mode) I now wonder, what should I log, check, measure, to capture enough data to fill bug report. • Interacting with IE using sendkeys from Excel

  I'm trying to write an application which uses values from excel and then switches to a web application using sendkeys. The problem I am having is that I cannot used sendkeys ("{ENTER}") or sendkeys ("^o") as I don't have the access for that. I'm trying to automate a very trivial admin task. I've thought about using the mouse to interact with the links as well as pausing and waiting for the user to just hit return but so far have been unable to come up with a solution. Do you think there is anyway around this? I have some VBA knowledge (enough to get me this far) but not a great deal.

  I'm using Unity 3D Let's say the player is an ice cube. You control it like a normal player. On press of a button, ice transforms (with animation) into water. You control it completely different than the ice cube. Another great example would be: Player is human being and has normal FPS controls. On press of a button human transforms into birds and now has completely different controls. Now, my question is, what would be easier and better: make one object with animation transition and to stay in that state of anim. until button is pressed again make two object: ice and water. Ice has an animation of turning into water. So replace ice (with animation) with water object And if anyone knows this one too: how to switch between 2 different types of player controls.

• Creating a bootable USB recovery drive to be used by someone who isn't computer savvy

  I am looking for a way to prepare an image of an Ubuntu machine which would be bootable and installable in the easiest way possible. I'm actually preparing an Ubuntu machine for someone living far, and not computer savvy. If he ever has troubles with his installation, he could just put a USB drive in, boot the machine and everything would be resetted for him. I know there are many methods of creating/loading an image of a drive, but the ones I've found so far have complicated menus with several options to choose from, etc. Ideally, perhaps only asking a Yes/No question such as "Would you like to reinstall?" would be great. Does such a tool exist? Thank you in advance!

• How can I make the text cursor in X Windows easier to see?

  The text cursor in X Windows is too thin for me to see easily. It would be great if I could make the text cursor wider so that it was more visible. I know how to change the size of the mouse cursor in X by going to System Preferences Appearance and customizing the Pointer so that it is larger. But I have not been able to find any setting that allows me to alter the appearance of the text cursor. So how can I make the text cursor easier to see?

• Interpolating between two networked states?

  I have many entities on the client side that are simulated (their velocities are added to their positions on a per frame basis) and I let them dead reckon themselves. They send updates about where they were last seen and their velocity changes. This works great and other players see this work find. However, after a while these players begin to desync after some time. This is because of latency. I'd like to know how I can interpolate between states so they appear to be in the correct position. I know where the player was LAST seen and their current velocity but interpolating to the last seen state causes the player to actually move -backwards-. I could not use velocity at all for other clients and simply 'lerp' them towards the appropriate direction but I feel this would cause jaggy movement. What are the alternatives?

• Scrum got specific ways for testing software?

  When reading Scrum Guide, as the official text for scrum, I find out there is no specific solution to provide software testing in scrum. (the only hint is on page15) I'm a little vague on whether scrum is considered a software development methodology or not? If it is not, then how come some of its practices opposes Extreme Programming? (I know that in scrum guide, the author notes that scrum is a framework not a methodology, but still I'm not pretty clear on that) And what's more, I'm not sure if there are any other important textbook that I'm missing so far about scrum. I need them to be official or of great deal of public acceptance.
