  • Is it legal to develop a game usung some version of D&D, something similar to Baldurs Gate?

    - by Max
For a while now I've been thinking about trying my hand at creating a game similar in spirit and execution to Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and offshoots. I'd rather not face the full bulk of work in implementing my own RPG system - I'd like to use D&D rules. Now, reading about the subject it seems there is something called "The License" which allows a company to brand a game as D&D. This license seems to be exclusive, and let's just say I don't have the money to buy it :p. Is it still legal for me to implement and release such a game? Commercially or open-source? I'm not sure exactly which edition would fit the best, but since Baldurs Gate is based of 2nd edition, could I go ahead an implement that? in short: what are the issues concerning licensing and publishing when it comes to D&D? Also: Didn't see any similar question...

  • How do I create my own Ubuntu version? [closed]

    - by Alvar
Possible Duplicate: How to customize live Ubuntu CD? I don't like unity and I don't like xubuntu or kubuntu that much, so I want to know how I can create my own Ubuntu distro! I want: a GUI only a terminal installed (no other unnecessary programs.) I don't want Unity no browser, games, text editors or video players. I basically want a distro that is easy to set up the way you want it. So as many ppa should be added as default. Is this at all possible?

  • Version Not Final, Does not represent actual game footage?

    - by thinly veiled question mark
Just curious about this. Frequently, a lot of gameplay videos from big studios have small subtitled text at the lower part of the screen, reading something like: Pre-Alpha Gameplay -- Footage not Final Game Footage not Final Pre-Alpha, Game here is not final Is there some sort of reason they do this? Is there some sort of legal ramification that they need to go through by adding this? I have especially seen some gameplay vids whose titles are "Alpha x.x.x", yet still, in the video itself, it always something like "footage not final, game may change".

  • How to safely upgrade from an older Ubuntu version to a newer one?

    - by NikTh
How can I safely upgrade an Ubuntu installation from one release to another? What should I do before upgrading to ensure it goes smoothly, and is there any clean-up I need to do afterwards? In particular, do I need to do anything special if I am using packages from PPAs, if I have a graphics card that needs drivers, or if I'm running a custom Linux kernel? This is a general question , but as example we take Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 12.10

  • g++ symbol versioning. Set it to GCC_3.0 using version 4 of g++

    - by Ismael
Hi all I need to implemente a Java class which uses JNI to control a fiscal printer in XUbuntu 8.10 with sun-java6-jdk installed. The structure is the following: EpsonDriver.java loads libEpson.so libEpson is linked dynamically with EpsonFiscalProtocol.so ( provided by Epson, no source available ) and pthread I use javah to generate the header file, and the code compiles. Then I put the libEpson.so in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/i386, and EpsonDriver.java uses an static initializar System.loadLibrary("libEpson") That part works, however, when I try to use any of the methods I get an unsatisfiedLinkError exception. Some time ago, a coworker did a version that works, and using objdump -Dslx I got the following: Program Header: LOAD off 0x00000000 vaddr 0x00000000 paddr 0x00000000 align 2**12 filesz 0x0000ccc4 memsz 0x0000ccc4 flags r-x LOAD off 0x0000d000 vaddr 0x0000d000 paddr 0x0000d000 align 2**12 filesz 0x00000250 memsz 0x00044a5c flags rw- DYNAMIC off 0x0000d014 vaddr 0x0000d014 paddr 0x0000d014 align 2**2 filesz 0x000000f0 memsz 0x000000f0 flags rw- NOTE off 0x000000d4 vaddr 0x000000d4 paddr 0x000000d4 align 2**2 filesz 0x00000024 memsz 0x00000024 flags r-- STACK off 0x00000000 vaddr 0x00000000 paddr 0x00000000 align 2**2 filesz 0x00000000 memsz 0x00000000 flags rw- Dynamic Section: NEEDED EpsonFiscalProtocol.so NEEDED libpthread.so.0 NEEDED libstdc++.so.6 NEEDED libm.so.6 NEEDED libc.so.6 SONAME libcom_tichile_jpos_EpsonSerialDriver.so INIT 0x00007254 FINI 0x0000ba08 GNU_HASH 0x000000f8 STRTAB 0x00001f50 SYMTAB 0x00000ae0 STRSZ 0x00002384 SYMENT 0x00000010 PLTGOT 0x0000d108 PLTRELSZ 0x00000008 PLTREL 0x00000011 JMPREL 0x0000724c REL 0x000045c4 RELSZ 0x00002c88 RELENT 0x00000008 TEXTREL 0x00000000 VERNEED 0x00004564 VERNEEDNUM 0x00000002 VERSYM 0x000042d4 RELCOUNT 0x000000ac Version References: required from libstdc++.so.6: 0x056bafd3 0x00 05 CXXABI_1.3 0x08922974 0x00 04 GLIBCXX_3.4 required from libc.so.6: 0x0b792650 0x00 03 GCC_3.0 0x0d696910 0x00 02 GLIBC_2.0 In the recently compiled file I get: Program Header: LOAD off 0x00000000 vaddr 0x00000000 paddr 0x00000000 align 2**12 filesz 0x00005300 memsz 0x00005300 flags r-x LOAD off 0x00005300 vaddr 0x00006300 paddr 0x00006300 align 2**12 filesz 0x00000274 memsz 0x00010314 flags rw- DYNAMIC off 0x00005314 vaddr 0x00006314 paddr 0x00006314 align 2**2 filesz 0x000000e0 memsz 0x000000e0 flags rw- EH_FRAME off 0x00004a00 vaddr 0x00004a00 paddr 0x00004a00 align 2**2 filesz 0x00000154 memsz 0x00000154 flags r-- Dynamic Section: NEEDED libstdc++.so.5 NEEDED libm.so.6 NEEDED libgcc_s.so.1 NEEDED libc.so.6 SONAME EpsonFiscalProtocol.so INIT 0x00001cb4 FINI 0x00004994 HASH 0x000000b4 STRTAB 0x00000da4 SYMTAB 0x000004f4 STRSZ 0x00000acf SYMENT 0x00000010 PLTGOT 0x0000640c PLTRELSZ 0x00000270 PLTREL 0x00000011 JMPREL 0x00001a44 REL 0x000019dc RELSZ 0x00000068 RELENT 0x00000008 VERNEED 0x0000198c VERNEEDNUM 0x00000002 VERSYM 0x00001874 RELCOUNT 0x00000004 Version References: required from libstdc++.so.5: 0x056bafd2 0x00 04 CXXABI_1.2 required from libc.so.6: 0x09691f73 0x00 03 GLIBC_2.1.3 0x0d696910 0x00 02 GLIBC_2.0 So I suspect the main diference is the GCC_3.0 symbol I compile libcom_tichile_EpsonSerialDriver.so with the following command ( from memory as I not at work right now ) g++ -Wl,-soname=.... -shared -I/*jni libraries*/ -o libcom_tichile_jpos_EpsonSerialDriver -lEpsonFiscalProtocol -lpthread Is there any way to tell g++ to use that symbol version? • What is the best way to limit text input entry to numbers, lowercase letters, and certain symbols?

    - by Adam Maras
Without using jQuery, what is the best way to limit text entry of a textbox to numbers, lowercase letters and a given set of symbols (for example - and _)? If the user enters an uppercase letter, I would like it to be automatically converted to a lowercase letter, and if the user enters a symbol not within the given set, I would like to be able to instantly show a validation error (show some element adjacent to or below the text box). What's the cleanest cross-browser way of doing this without the aid of jQuery?

  • should I ever put a major version number into a C#/Java namespace?

    - by Andrew Patterson
I am designing a set of 'service' layer objects (data objects and interface definitions) for a WCF web service (that will be consumed by third party clients i.e. not in-house, so outside my direct control). I know that I am not going to get the interface definition exactly right - and am wanting to prepare for the time when I know that I will have to introduce a breaking set of new data objects. However, the reality of the world I am in is that I will also need to run my first version simultaneously for quite a while. The first version of my service will have URL of http://host/app/v1service.svc and when the times comes by new version will live at http://host/app/v2service.svc However, when it comes to the data objects and interfaces, I am toying with putting the 'major' version of the interface number into the actual namespace of the classes. namespace Company.Product.V1 { [DataContract(Namespace = "company-product-v1")] public class Widget { [DataMember] string widgetName; } public interface IFunction { Widget GetWidgetData(int code); } } When the time comes for a fundamental change to the service, I will introduce some classes like namespace Company.Product.V2 { [DataContract(Namespace = "company-product-v2")] public class Widget { [DataMember] int widgetCode; [DataMember] int widgetExpiry; } public interface IFunction { Widget GetWidgetData(int code); } } The advantages as I see it are that I will be able to have a single set of code serving both interface versions, sharing functionality where possible. This is because I will be able to reference both interface versions as a distinct set of C# objects. Similarly, clients may use both interface versions simultaneously, perhaps using V1.Widget in some legacy code whilst new bits move on to V2.Widget. Can anyone tell why this is a stupid idea? I have a nagging feeling that this is a bit smelly.. notes: I am obviously not proposing every single new version of the service would be in a new namespace. Presumably I will do as many non-breaking interface changes as possible, but I know that I will hit a point where all the data modelling will probably need a significant rewrite. I understand assembly versioning etc but I think this question is tangential to that type of versioning. But I could be wrong.
