• Does my OS will support these tools ?

  I am currently using Windows Server 2003 and I want to install Windows XP [SP1 or SP2 or SP3] or may be VISTA. I have may application which I can run on Windows Server 2003 and I am curious to know If I could run the same on XP or Vista. Please help me deciding whether I change my OS or not, here is the List of software and app I want to work on: Visual Studio 2008/2010 SQL Server 2008 ASP.NET MVC and Entity Framework WPF application P.S. : I can create all my application [except WPF] with Windows Server 2003. I have a idea that I can install VS 2008 on XP but not exactly sure about MVC framework and other latest technology stuff.

• changing permissions for a network share takes longer on win2008 than on win2003, why is that?

  Given a network share accessible for "everyone" in the domain, containing several 1000 files and folders When I change permissions for this share from read/write to only read (or vice versa) on windows 2003, the change takes effect instantly. When I do the same on a share on Windows 2008, the dialog stays open for a long time before closing when I click on OK, and the server appears to be accessing a lot of files. What is the reason for this delay? Does Windows 2008 also change ntfs permissions for all files inside the share? If so, why doesn't win2003 have to do that? I do not mind the delay, after all I do not have to change this stuff very often, but I am curious. What are the differences between 2003 and 2008 in this regard?

  I am trying to debug a HTTP Handler in Visual Studio and the break point is not getting hit. Does anyone have an idea on how to go about debugging HTTP Handlers in Visual Studio? I am using VS 2010 Premium, .NET 4.0 on a Windows 7 machine. In my Web Application I have a HTTP Handler in /HTTPHandler/TrackingHandler.cs The following is in my web config file: <system.webServer> <handlers> <add name="TrackingHandler" path="/tx/*" verb="*" type="ProjectNamespace.TrackingHandler" resourceType="Unspecified" preCondition="integratedMode" /> </handlers> </system.webServer> My HTTP Handler looks like below namespace ProjectNamespace { public class TrackingHandler : IHttpHandler { public bool IsReusable { get { return true; } } public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { //Breakpoint on the very first line below string tracker = Path.GetFileName(context.Request.PhysicalPath); ....... } } } I start my Web Application using any random page in Visual Studio Debug using the builtin Web Server. I then maually edit the URL to point to the /tx/ directory and some random string after it. For e.g. my current URL looks like http://localhost:53699/tx/sdfs. I thought this should pull up the breakpoint on the first line of ProcessRequest() but it does not. I’d be grateful for any ideas. O. O.

• Which is the best free ide/plugin for struts2?

  Hello friends, I have just learnt struts 2 and now I have taken up a full fledged project in it. I learnt the basics of struts 2 in Netbeans with it's struts2 plugin. But I am not at all happy with it, as it is very basic and I end up doing most of the work. It is obviously better than plain-vanilla text editor, but still not at all near to what netbeans provides for springs and hibernate. I know because netbeans provides native support for springs and hibernate, it is meant to be better. I don't mind changing my IDE if i get better support for struts2! So my questions are Please list all the free IDEs where native support for struts2 is provided. And if possible please compare them. Please list all the plugins that are available for eclipse for struts2 development. I have heard there are better plugins in eclipse. Also, if there are better plugins in any other IDE (other than netbeans or eclipse of course), please list them giving links. Please give me some tips which I'll need before starting a full blown project in Struts2. I haven't worked on any project on Struts2. • Good books or tutorials on building projects without an IDE?

  While I'm certainly under no illusions that building software without an IDE is possible, I don't actually know much about doing it well. I've been using graphical tools like Visual Studio or Code::Blocks so long that I'm pretty well lost without them. And that really stinks when I want to change environments or languages. I couldn't really do anything in D until someone made a Visual Studio plugin, and now that I'm trying to do more development on Mac, I can't use D again because the XCode plugins don't work. I'm sick of being lost when I see a .make file and having no idea what I'm supposed to do with a folder full of source files. People can't be compiling them one by one using the console and then linking them one by one. You'd spend more time typing file names than code. So what are the automation and productivity tools of the non-IDE user? How do you manage a project when you're writing all the code in emacs or vim or nano or whatever? I would love it if there was a book or a guide online that spells some of this out.

  How can I pass in the current datetime parameter to a SOAP request? I know you can pass in parameters by adding a datasource to the web test project and reference it like this {{DataSource.TableName.FieldName}}. But I want to pass in current datetime parameter as a dynamic value (something like DateTime.Now). How do I go about doing this? • Visual Studio 2010: adding a service reference to a 2008 generated wsdl

  Doesn't produce a app.config . In my team there is a guy who has Visual Studio 2008, he created a webservice. Then there is me, adding this webservice to a console project. Adding the service reference goes without problems but no valid app.config is generated. It's just empty <configuration> </configuration> When I disable 'reuse types' in my service reference it works but then I get an ambiguous error. Is this a bug? I found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2159107/visual-studio-does-not-generate-app-config-content-when-add-service-reference this one, but there is no solution there, so I thought I bump the problem up again.   I am able to configure our Build Server (Team Build 2008) to build our asp.net application. I've done so via <ConfigurationToBuild Include="Debug|Mixed Platforms"> <FlavorToBuild>Debug</FlavorToBuild> <PlatformToBuild>Mixed Platforms</PlatformToBuild> </ConfigurationToBuild> Problem though, the asp.net assets(eg. script folders, imgs, etc.) are not copied to the deployment folder. Folder(_PublishedWebsites) only contains the binaries references of the app plus the pre-compiled web services. Is there a way to include said folders/files to the deployment folder? Thanks

  Suppose I have a line of code that starts like the following: Func1(Func2(Func3 Is it possible to set up Visual Studio (2005, 2008, 2010) IDE, so that when I hit ';' it will auto-complete all the brackets. I am only interested in brackets, nothing fancier. It doesn't have to be ';' key, it can be another key that auto-completes both brackets and ';'. This is a tiny thing that pops-up time and time again, and I've always wondered if I had to live with it. Thanks.

• Visual Artifacts in Visual Studio 2010

  I'm using VS 2010 on Windows Server 2003, running on a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop. VS 2010 runs fine, except for persistent and random screen re-drawing issues. Samples of these are here. These artifacts occur as the mouse moves over items that highlight on a mouse-over event, while scrolling, and when switching tabs. VS 2008 has non of these issues, so I assume that it is related to VS 2010's use of WPF. Could it be that my video card or driver is not up to the task of rendering WPF? Some other WPF applications (not Silverlight) also have some of these screen repainting problems. I have tried a variety of settings in System Properties--Advanced--Performance Options--Visual Effects, and in the related "Advanced" tab, Processor Scheduling is adjusted for best performance of programs. • False sense of security with `snprintf_s`

  MSVC's "secure" sprintf funcions have a template version that 'knows' the size of the target buffer. However, this code happily paints 567890 over the stack after the end of bytes... char bytes[5]; _snprintf_s( bytes, _TRUNCATE, "%s", "1234567890" ); Any idea what I do wrong, or is this a known bug? (I'm working in VS2005 - didn't test in 2008 or 2010)

• VB.Net 2008 Chrome or Firefox control

  I'm trying to figure out a way to have multiple sessions at the same website at the same time. I've been using the SHDocVw.InternetExplorer control in Visual Studio 2008 to open a web browser and log in, but at times we need to use a separate login. I haven't found a way to do this using just internet explorer (it just uses the credentials of the first login), so I figure if I can find a similar control for another brower that allows DOM level access then I can just use that. If anyone knows of anything I can try that would be very helpful.

  In visual studio 2008, I have created a static dll called test_static.dll. I am trying to call this from one application. I have included this dll in source files folder and the header file related to it in headers folder. When i am running the application I am getting following liking error. • Visual Studio 2008 resolving wrong reference

  In my project file, I have the following entry: <Reference Include="Microsoft.Practices.Unity, Version=1.2.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35, processorArchitecture=MSIL"> <HintPath>..\..\..\..\Libraries\Microsoft.Practices.Unity.dll</HintPath> </Reference> which in absolute terms translates to: C:\dev\LUT600 2.1.1\OCC600\Libraries Somehow, when I try to compile the project, Visual Studio loads a reference from a totally different path: /reference:"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Enterprise Library 4.1 - October 2008\Bin\Microsoft.Practices.Unity.dll. How it resolves to this location is a complete mystery as this DLL is not referenced anywhere in this project. I have set Specific Verion to true but it still resolves the reference from this location. Any ideas? TIA. Klaus

Can you please tell me what should i do step by step? i am a little bit confused cause i found a lot of solutions to add dll files but they significantly differ.. some of them add dll's only using code, some using properties in vs, add references and in other tutorials there is about registering dlls in system.   Hi, I made a program using visual c# which connects to a local .mdf sql database. I've published it using the Publish Wizard, used the files on another computer to install it and it worked fine. However, some bugs were discovered. I've corrected the problems, published it again and tried to patch the program on the 2nd computer. After much trials and errors, fastest way to patch is to overwrite the .application file. Suprisingly, the database was also overwritten. Question is: How do I make new version of the program and install it on the other computer without modifying the database? On developping computer, database appears as a .mdf file which can be copied, but on 2nd computer this file does not exists. Supplementary info: -Developping computer: Vista, using Visual Studio 2008 with Server 2005 -2nd computer: XP using microsoft express server 2005

• Converting VS 2008 Project to VS 2010 - now .aspx won't load

  I converted all my other projects fine from VS 2008 to 2010 and they run great. There is one project however for some reason after converting, when I try to run one of the .aspx pages in it, I get nothing...no error, just that it cannot display the page. Nothing has changed. The path is still the same, and the IIS website is still the same. I even recreated the site in IIS using the VS option to create it in the web project properties. This is a testing project..only has like one .aspx in it. Not sure why I get nothing after converting this. I did not convert it to .NET 4.0, it's still in v3.5 in VS 2010.

• Are there any GOOD javascript addins for Visual Studio?

  In our daily work we maintain some rather large Javascript libaries. We use VS2008 and while they made some improvements to the Javascript IDE, I still find it lacking. There is no outlining, no collapsing, or other ways to keep the code organized. I have tried js-addin and JSLint which crash and don't have the features I want, respectively. I have actually gone as far as running Aptana Studio as their Javascript IDE is much better than what I can get out of Visual Studio. I'm getting tired of having to maintain 2 IDE's. Is there anything out there that can make Javascript editing less painful in Visual Studio 2008? (We don't have the option of 2010 yet).

• Visual Studio 2008 error while debugging an app with "uiAccess=true" in the manifest

  I have a C# WinForms application that has "uiAccess" set to "True" in it's manifest file. When I try to start/debug it in Visual Studio 2008 SP1 under Windows 7 x64 (RTM) I get this error: Running an Accessibility application requires following the steps described in Help. The help button is a broken link, and clicking ok just closes the application. It is digitally signed, and I can start it just fine in Windows Explorer. If I put the same code in a PUSH-BUTTON OnBnClicked it works. If I put it in the OnInit, it does not give me the text on the screen. • Language+IDE for teaching high school students?

  I'm investigating languages and IDEs for a project involving teaching high-school students (around grade 11). It will teach basics of programming as an introduction to computer science (e.g., including how numbers/strings/characters are represented, using procedures and arrays, control flow, a little bit of algorithms, only very basic I/O). The non-negotiable requirements for this project are: a free up-to-date cross-platform IDE (Win & Mac incl. 64-bit) with debug a compiler where it's easy to learn from your mistakes together with the IDE, a gentle installation+learning curve So far, the best options I see are the following. Are there others I should know about? I am giving a short explanation with each one to generally show what I am looking for. In order from most to least promising: Pascal + FreePascal IDE (it seems a little buggy but actively developed?) Python + Eclipse + PyDev (good but features are overwhelming/hard to navigate) Groovy + Eclipse ('') Python + IDLE (looks unnatural to do debugging, to me) Pascal + Lazarus (IDE overwhelming, e.g. not obvious how to "start from scratch") Preferably, as a rule of thumb, the language should be direct enough that you don't need to wrap every program in a class, don't need to reference a System object to println, etc. I tried a little bit to see if there is something in JavaScript or (non-Visual) Basic along the lines of what I want, but found nothing so far. I would say that C/C++/C#, Java, Ruby, Lisp, VB do not fit my criteria for languages for this project. To reiterate my questions: are any of those 5 options really awesome or un-awesome? Are there other options which are even MORE awesome? Anything for Basic or JavaScript which meets all of the criteria? Thanks!

• Deployable dependencies in Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Beta

  One new feature that comes with Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Beta is support for deployment references. Deployment reference means that you can include all necessary DLL-s to deployment package so your application has all assemblies it needs to run with it in deployment package. In this posting I will show you how to use deployment dependencies. When I open my ASP.NET web application I have new option for references when I right-click on my web project: Add Deployable Dependencies… If you select it you will see dialog where you can select dependencies you want to add to your project package. When packages you need are selected click OK. Visual Studio adds new folder to your project called _bin_DeployableAssemblies. Screenshot on right shows the list of assemblies added for ASP.NET Pages and Razor. All DLL-s required to run ASP.NET MVC 3 with Razor view engine are here. I am not sure if NuGet.Core.dll is required in production but if it is added then let it be there. Deploy to Azure I tried to deploy my ASP.NET MVC project that uses Razor to Windows Azure after adding deployable references to my project. Deployment went fine and web role instance started without any problems. The only DLL reference I made as local was the one for System.Web.Mvc. All Razor stuff came with deployable dependencies. Conclusion Visual Studio support for deployable dependencies is great because this way component providers can build definitions for their components so also assemblies that are loaded dynamically at runtime will be in deployment package.

  Hello, I've started to read the book "Code Craft" by Pete Goodliffe. The fourth chapter is about instruments that developer uses during his daily work; this chapter made me to review my work and I've seriously decided to make it easier with fully personalized IDE. Eclipse IDE is what I've started my learning from... I've read documentation and found that it's really easy to do tasks routine from Eclipse. We are using Mantis for tracking tasks and it was great surprise for me to find out Mantis Connector for Mylyn. Also I was pretty glad to see SVN client integrated into Eclipse IDE. Also I've found UML2 tool for Eclipse, but was disappointed because there is no any graphic interface for building diagramms. (Or, maybe, I'm was searching in wrong place?) What useful plugins do you use in your daily work? How do you use Eclipse for collaboration in your team? Do you have any links about intergration Eclipse IDE experience in dev. team? Thank you!

• Repairing The Visual Studio 2012 UI

  I have sympathy for ‘Softies who don’t like the controversial ‘Metro’ UI changes but are afraid to say so. After all, who wants to commit a CLM (Career-Limiting Move) by declaring that the Emperor has no clothes (or gradients) and that ALL CAPS IN MENUS ARE DUMB? Talk about power! Here’s a higher-up (anyone got a name?) who has enforced a flat, monochrome, uninteresting user interface in Visual Studio 2012  that has been damned with faint praise by consumers. The pushback must have been enormous. Some ‘Softies disengage from the raging debate with, “It’s not my decision” while others feebly point out that the addition of some colour pixels in the icons is a real improvement over the beta version. True, I guess. With the UI pretty much locked, its down to repairing the damage. Fortunately, some Empire dissident has leaked the news to a blogger that  those SHOUTING CAPs aren’t hardcoded afterall: How To Prevent Visual Studio 2012 ALL CAPS Menus And so it goes. By RTM, I’m sure there will be many more add-ons to help us ‘de-Metro’ VS 2012 and recreate our favourite Visual Studio 2010 themes for it.
