  • Using SQL for localization instead of RESX files in ASP.NET

    - by user313994
Hi, I'm thinking of developing the following but wondering if it already exists out there: I need a SQL based solution for assigning and managing localization text values for an asp.net site instead of using RESX files. This helps maintain text on the site without having to take it down for deployment whenever an update is required. Thanks.

  • How to pre-populate the Facebook status message through an URL similar to pre-populating a tweet?

    - by Crashalot
This question has been asked before on SO, but most of those questions were asked a long time ago. Essentially, we want a simple way to pre-populate the Facebook status message through the URL much like you can with Twitter. We're aware of the Facebook APIs, but are wondering if there is a more lightweight approach. We don't need programmatically to post a message, but just provide some default text that the user can edit before sharing.

  • Opinion on "loop invariants", and are these frequently used in the industry?

    - by Michael Aaron Safyan
I was thinking back to my freshman year at college (five years ago) when I took an exam to place-out of intro-level computer science. There was a question about loop invariants, and I was wondering if loop invariants are really necessary in this case or if the question was simply a bad example... the question was to write an iterative definition for a factorial function, and then to prove that the function was correct. The code that I provided for the factorial function was as follows: public static int factorial(int x) { if ( x < 0 ){ throw new IllegalArgumentException("Parameter must be = 0"); }else if ( x == 0 ){ return 1; }else{ int result = 1; for ( int i = 1; i <= x; i++ ){ result*=i; } return result; } } My own proof of correctness was a proof by cases, and in each I asserted that it was correct by definition (x! is undefined for negative values, 0! is 1, and x! is 1*2*3...*x for a positive value of x). The professor wanted me to prove the loop using a loop invariant; however, my argument was that it was correct "by definition", because the definition of "x!" for a positive integer x is "the product of the integers from 1... x", and the for-loop in the else clause is simply a literal translation of this definition. Is a loop invariant really needed as a proof of correctness in this case? How complicated must a loop be before a loop invariant (and proper initialization and termination conditions) become necessary for a proof of correctness? Additionally, I was wondering... how often are such formal proofs used in the industry? I have found that about half of my courses are very theoretical and proof-heavy and about half are very implementation and coding-heavy, without any formal or theoretical material. How much do these overlap in practice? If you do use proofs in the industry, when do you apply them (always, only if it's complicated, rarely, never)?

  • Is there a way to debug ASP.NET MVC code using a symbol server (instead of downloading the source an

    - by Pure.Krome
Hi folks, Is it possible to step through the official ASP.NET MVC 2 code via using the Symbol Server thingy in visual studio 2010? I know I can download the full open source MVC code from codeplex, build it and then get my code to reference THAT codebase dll's... But i'm wondering if this could be achieved by using the Symbol Server stuff instead? If so, can someone go through some steps please, about how to achieve this?

  • C# can't cast bool to int

    - by Svetlozar Angelov
We all know that in C# we can't cast bool to int. I wanted to see what is the binary representation of true with bitmask, but I can't use (bool & int).. I think the problem is the architecture desicion "true is true, not any number != 0" (C++) and I was wondering what the benefits of such an architecture are? What is so bad with the C true/false concept?

  • Java Garbage Collection

    - by pietervn
I was wondering about the garbage collection that takes place in Java. Is it really able to handle all objects that aren't used and free up the most possible memory? I also want to know how does the Java garbage collection compare to another language like lets say C#? And then, how does the automatic garbage collection measure up against manual collection from a language like C?

  • COMException Problem

    - by Jack Harvin
Wondering if anyone could help with my problem. Below is the code, and after the code an explination of where the exception is thrown. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Data; using System.Drawing; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Windows.Forms; using System.Web; using WatiN.Core; using System.Threading; using System.IO; namespace WindowsFormsApplication1 { public partial class Form1 : System.Windows.Forms.Form { public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { } private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Thread t = new Thread(createApplications); Settings.AutoStartDialogWatcher = false; t.SetApartmentState(System.Threading.ApartmentState.STA); t.Start(); } private void createApplications() { createApp("username", "password", "Test App", "This is just a test description", "http:/mysite.com"); } private void createApp(String username, String password, String appName, String description, String appUrl) { var currentBrowser = new IE("http://mysite.com/login/php"); currentBrowser.TextField(Find.ById("username")).TypeText(username); currentBrowser.TextField(Find.ById("password")).TypeText(password); currentBrowser.Button(Find.ById("submit")).Click(); currentBrowser.GoTo("http://mysite.com/createmusicapp.php"); currentBrowser.TextField(Find.ById("application_name")).TypeText(appName); currentBrowser.TextField(Find.ById("application_description")).TypeText(description); currentBrowser.TextField(Find.ById("application_url")).TypeText(appUrl); currentBrowser.RadioButton(Find.ById("client_application_desktop_1")).Click(); currentBrowser.RadioButton(Find.ById("client_application_is_writable_1")).Click(); WatiN.Core.Image captchaImage = currentBrowser.Div(Find.ById("recaptcha_image")).Image(Find.ByStyle("display", "block")); Form2 captcha = new Form2(captchaImage.Src); captcha.ShowDialog(); } } } The exception is thrown on this line: currentBrowser.TextField(Find.ById("username")).TypeText(username); BUT, it's thrown when it gets to this line: captcha.ShowDialog(); It logs in, and fills in the app details and Form2 loads fine, but once loaded, after around 2-3 seconds the exception happens. I am wondering if it's anything to do with the threads? But I wouldn't know how to solve it if it was. The complete exception thrown is: The object invoked has disconnected from its clients. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010108 (RPC_E_DISCONNECTED))

  • Problems with JQuery's Droppable Tolerance 'fit' feature when using the same size divs

    - by Chris
Hi I'm just wondering if anybody else can manage to get the tolerance:'fit' option to work when using the 'droppable' feature in jQuery's UI? I want to call a function only when the draggable div is dropped perfectly onto a droppable div. Both divs are the same size and I'm using snapMode:outer to help the end user. I simply cannot get it to work with 'fit'. Works perfectly with 'intersect'. Would really appreciate some help. Thanks Chris

  • Is there an alias for the local machine name in the Windows 7 login screen?

    - by Mikael
We have many computers connected to a AD. The computers names is auto generated. When I want to log in using a local account, I have to figure out what the computer's name is, and log in using the following syntax: [COMPUTER_NAME]\local_account Now I'm wondering if there is an alias that I can use instead? So instead of logging in using NB-aw35sdds\local_account, I can use something like localhost\local_account.

  • What's a Java alternative to Google App Engine for developing iPhone Push Notification services?

    - by bpapa
I'm a Java programmer who is working on an iPhone application. I'd like it to use Push Notification services. I originally thought I could use Google App Engine to provide the payloads to Apple, but I see now that it won't be possible because App Engine doesn't support the low-level socket programming that is needed to communicate with Apple. Are there any alternatives to Google App Engine that let me use Java? In brief, I'm wondering if there is a free hosting platform that supports Java and Socket Programming

  • Who owns a php exec tar extracted file?

    - by Ken
As far as file permissions are concerned, when you use a php script to unzip a tar file, who is the "owner" user of the files created? I'm wondering if its my ftp user because I uploaded the script file? Or does apache own the file? I know their are flags to be set to preserve the original permissions which I don't want (files where created and archived by someone else). I want my user to be the creater/owner of the files.
