• JList not showing items or showing selectively.

  I have a Java Swing application using a JList to show some data from a DB. I am using DefaulListModel as the data model for the list in this way: void PopulateSoldiersList() { try { soldiersListModel = new DefaultListModel(); for (Soldier i : myBackEnd.GetAllSoldiers()) { soldiersListModel.addElement(i); } this.listSoldiers.setModel(soldiersListModel); } catch (Exception ex) {// Error Message} } And for some reason, the list just stays empty... I even did make sure at runtime that all the data is set up properly in the data model and even in the "dataModel" property of the JList! In other place at the app i have a similar problem, but there, sometimes the list show few items from the model (but not all of them) I have no idea where to go from here... please help. Thanks!

  I am creating a client-server application and I'd like to send data from server to client securely. Using public/private key algorithms makes sense and in PHP we can use openssl_sign and openssl_verify functions to check that the data came by someone who has the private key. Now imagine that one of the actions sent by server to client is destructive in nature. If somebody uses an HTTP sniffer to catch this command (which will be signed properly) how can I further protect the communication to ensure that only commands coming from our server get processed by the client? I was thinking about using current UTC time as part of the encrypted data but client time might be off. Is there a simple solution to the problem?

• How can I prevent MEF from throwing an exception when an Export is not found?

  I have a class with an IList<T> property decorated with the [ImportMany(allowRecomposition = true)] attribute. There are some conditions in which the application might not find any available Exports of the requested type. Right now, it's throwing a CompositionException if no Exports of the requested type are found. I dislike application flow being determined by thrown exceptions, so I would rather not catch and react in this case. Rather, I just want program execution to continue. Is there a flag or something I can set to make this Import optional? I know for single import properties, you can do this: [Import(AllowDefault = true)] but 'AllowDefault' is not an option on the ImportMany attribute.

• How do I list all tables in all databases in SQL Server in a single result set?

  I am looking for T-SQL code to list all tables in all databases in SQL Server (at least in SS2005 and SS2008; would be nice to also apply to SS2000). The catch, however, is that I would like a single result set. This precludes the otherwise excellent answer from Pinal Dave: sp_msforeachdb 'select "?" AS db, * from [?].sys.tables' The above stored proc generates one result set per database, which is fine if you are in an IDE like SSMS that can display multiple result sets. However, I want a single result set because I want a query that is essentially a "find" tool: if I add a clause like WHERE tablename like '%accounts' then it would tell me where to find my BillAccounts, ClientAccounts, and VendorAccounts tables regardless of which database they reside in.

  Hi! Are there defined join points in arithmetics that I can catch? Something like: int a = 4; int b = 2; int c = a + b; Can I make a pointcut that catches any one of those lines? And what context will I be able to get? I would like to add a before() to all int/float/double manipulation done in a particular method on a class, is that possible. I see in the AspectJ docs that there are defined join points for object initialization and method calls. Is declaring an int an object initialization and does the + operator count as a method call?   Hello I've been trying for an hour to run the following program with a the postgresql classpath class Test{ public static void main(String[] args){ try { Class.forName("org.postgresql.Driver"); } catch (ClassNotFoundException cnfe) { System.err.println("Couldn't find Postgresql driver class!"); } } } The program compiled fine with the javac command, but I'm having a hard time running it with the postgresql classpath. • Do you think the AI industry will ever come back?

  I just spent some time reading about the collapse of the AI industry and realized a lot of the reason it failed was because technology was slow to catch up with their theories on when it would be available. I also read that it is believed computers that will be able to emulate human synapses may be made round 2015-2025. It's 2010 now and were getting pretty close to that time frame. I was wondering if anyone thinks that the AI industry will return as the technology lands? And if so, will it change the language market? Could Lisp like languages suddenly experience a burst of growth if it does? Idk I just thought it was interesting thinking about it.

• Effecient data structure design

  Hi there, I need to match a series of user inputed words against a large dictionary of words (to ensure the entered value exists). So if the user entered: "orange" it should match an entry "orange' in the dictionary. Now the catch is that the user can also enter a wildcard or series of wildcard characters like say "or__ge" which would also match "orange" The key requirements are: * this should be as fast as possible. * use the smallest amount of memory to achieve it. If the size of the word list was small I could use a string containing all the words and use regular expressions. however given that the word list could contain potentially hundreds of thousands of enteries I'm assuming this wouldn't work. So is some sort of 'tree' be the way to go for this...? Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be totally appreciated! Thanks in advance, Matt

• Timeout in LINQ to SQL inserting millions of records

  I'm inserting approximently 3 million records in a database using this solution. Eventually when the application has been inserting records for a while (my last run lasted around 4 hours), it gives a timeout with the following SqlException: "SqlExcepetion: Timeout expired. The timeoutperiod elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." What's the best way to handle this exception? Is there a way to prevent this from happening or should I catch the exception? Thanks in advance!

• In FLEX, How can you stop ENTER Key from my Alert being caught by the control that initiated the Al

  I am having an issue where I show an AlertBox message when the user hits ENTER and the focus is in a text area. The pop up works fine, but when the user hits enter the Alert closes as expected, but the TextArea listener receives the ENTER event from the Alert and pops the dialog up again. I have tried a number of ways to catch and eat the event but so far I have not been lucky.   I have a script that recursively scans a directory pulling out class names from php files, and storing those classes names in an array. This is working nicely even through the rather large Zend Framework library folders. The issue is that classes that extend other classes are not being included in the array. Here is my current preg_match: if (preg_match("/class\s*(\w*)\s*\{/i",strip_comments(file_get_contents($file)),$matches)) $classes[] = $matches[1]; I know that the last \s* is not right; there should be something there that can catch "{" or " extends Some_Other_Class {" .

• How to mark a method as "ignore all handled exception" + "step through"? Even when user has selected

  I want to mark a method as "debug step through" even if an exception is thrown (and catched within) the function. This is because 99% of the times I know this function will throw an exception (Assembly.GetTypes), and since this function is in a library I wish to hide this normal exception. (Why did MS not add an exceptionless GetTypes() call?)   There's always one or two guys, who think, they are great programmers, and they don't need any literature/specifications/etc. They usually write awful code, that makes you want to hurt them. They catch and suppress Throwable's, return null's, concatenate String's in large loops, do other stupid stuff. So the question is — How do I make such a person follow best practices and specifications? He does not listen (cause he's the best programmer), team lead does not give a damn ("It actually works, so why changing it?.."), and I'm actually tired of rewriting that awful code on my own. What do I do? What would you do?

For security purposes, access to these queues has been restricted to the current user (ServiceUser).   I've a simple but confusing doubt about whether the program below runs in exponential time. The question is : given a +ve integer as input, print it out. The catch is that you deliberately do this in a loop, like this: int input,output=0; cininput; while(input--) ++output; // Takes time proportional to the value of input cout<< output; I'm claiming that this problem runs in exponential time. Because, the moment you increase the # of bits in input by 1, the program takes double the amount of time to execute. Put another way, to print out log2(input) bits, it takes O(input) time. Is this reasoning right?

  I'm using the TPL (Task Parallel Library) in .NET 4.0. I want to be able to centralize the handling logic of all unhandled exceptions by using the Thread.GetDomain().UnhandledException event. However, in my application, the event is never fired for threads started with TPL code, e.g. Task.Factory.StartNew(...). The event is indeed fired if I use something like new Thread(threadStart).Start(). This MSDN article suggests to use Task#Wait() to catch the AggregateException when working with TPL, but that is not I want because it is not "centralized" enough a mechanism. Does anyone experience same problem at all or is it just me? Do you have any solution for this?

• Training new employees on undocumented code

  Our company has a large codebase (2500+ classes/interfaces in just the core alone, many more in other projects) for our flagship software product. We've never really hired more than one developer at a time, so we don't have a real training process. We're going to be bringing in 2-5 more developers now, and probably more in the near future (to put things into perspective, we have 7 right now.) Obviously, we would like to get these guys up to speed as soon as possible. The catch - almost all of our classes (95%+) are completely undocumented. No javadoc, no design docs, basically completely undocumented. What strategies can we employ to bring the new developers up to speed? I'd like to consider situations that include the existing code getting documented, but it's possible management won't allow for the time to get that done, so I also must consider situations where that won't happen. Has anyone been there before? What worked well for you? Thanks!

The text is entered, but it also acts on the keypress. Expected, but not good. I'm aware of various things like document.getElementById, but I can't figure out how to put these together to ensure that while the cursor is in the text input box, it doesn't act out the keypress catcher.
