• Dual monitor not working after an update

  I did a package manager update yesterday and it turns out that my dual monitor setup has stopped working. I have poor vision so I really need to connect to a much bigger screen, but since yesterday, when I connect the screen to my laptop, the screen does not automatically reset itself to the laptop display. Even after lots of trial and error with the display settings, I am getting different dispalys on the laptop and external screen and right now only the big screen is active while the laptop has blanked out. • How to debug wifi connection?

  I am using Ubuntu's Network Manager to connect to a local wifi router. My problem is, that it often disconnects without any visible reason (router is on, internet connection seems to be working, wifi diodes are blinking). I mostly have to disable wifi from Network Manager, enable it again to get wifi connecting again. Plus I am often experiencing Network Manager trying to connect to my wifi, trying several times but then giving up. I even tried an external usb-wifi card, but with the very same results. My question is: How can I debug this? Which logs should I read to see what is really happening when all of these errors occur - so I can post them here and see how to proceed?

• ethernet problems in ubuntu 12.04

  so today i popped out my hdd with ubuntu on it and put in a fresh hdd and installed win8 (wanted to try it). i got everything installed, upp and running and decided to go back to ubuntu (for obvious reasons lol) but when i boot back into ubuntu my internet connection will not connect. i booted into a live cd of ubuntu and it still would not work. i thought i blew up my onboard port so i booted back into win8 and the internet worked without flaw. so i booted back into my ubuntu install and i have a usb to ethernet adapter that im using but i still cant get my onboard to connect. any ideas?

• knetworkmanager not starting at all

  It seems that my knetworkmanager is not starting anymore. Read: In KDE4's sys tray I don't have a icon to manage my networks. Also when starting it from terminal or kick off menu literally "nothing" happens. I don't know what's wrong with it. Sadly after reading this answer on superuser.com it seems I can not connect to wifi via iwconfig 'cause my network is WPA2 encrypted. (Basically I can not set they passphrase - invalid argumenterror.) So it seems I've to get knetworkmanger running again as I also can't download other tools. I've tried stuff like sudo service network-manager restart but it didn't seem to help. I'm kinda puzzled so any help for this would be appreciated. PS: If it hasn't become clear: The whole drama of is simply I can't connect to wifi and internet :o)

  I'm having trouble with wifi on my MSI U180 netbook using Ubuntu 12.04. When I boot up the netbook, it will connect to my router however after a few minutes the wifi will just stop working and not find or connect to any networks. The only way to get wifi connectivity back is to reboot the netbook however the connection will again only last a few minutes. A wired connection works fine. I have tried connecting to a different router and the same thing happens. My friend has the same OS and netbook and his works fine. Does anybody have any possible solutions? Thanks in advance.

• Remote Desktop - remote computer that was reached is not the one you specified

  We just setup some new Windows 2008 R2 servers and we are unable to Remote Desktop into them from our Windows 7 desktops. Remote desktop connects, but after we provide credentials we get: The connection cannot be completed because the remote computer that was reached is not the one you specified. This could be caused by an outdated entry in the DNS cache. Try using the IP address of the computer instead of the name. If we connect from Windows 7 to a machine not running Windows 2008 R2, or from a machine not running Windows 7 to the Windows 2008 R2 server, it works fine. Likewise if we connect to the Windows 2008 R2 server from Windows 7 via the IP address then it works fine (although that causes other problems later). I've only found one other mention of someone having this problem, so I don't think it is just our network. Any suggestions on how to connect from Windows 7 to Windows 2008 R2 via DNS? Both are 64-bit. Update: Turns out it does not need to be R2 to get the error. We have another server that is Windows 2008 R1 64-bit that also fails.

• Teamcity build agent gives 504 gateway timeout

  I have a new teamcity build agent machine, which when started up tries to connect to the build server and fails. It never shows up in the connected, disconnected or unauthorised agents tabs of the build server web interface. The logs on the build agent show that it fails to connect with a 504 gateway timeout. Error code = 0x8007000b In MS connect this is reported as a bug but MS is unable to reproduce the problem altough when you search the fora I'm not the only one with this problem. So any help is appreciated.

• syspolicy_purge_history generates failed logins

  I have a development server with 3 instances: Default, A and B. It is a physical server, non clustered. Whenever the syspolicy_purge_history job runs at 2 am, I get failed login alerts. Looking at the job steps, all are successfully completed. It appears that some point during the step "Erase Phantom System Health Records" is when the failed logins occur. syspolicy_purge_history on instance B works OK. syspolicy_purge_history on the Default instance seems to want to connect to instance B, resulting in: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. Login failed for user 'Machinename\sqlsvc-B'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>] . No errors are reported by Powershell. syspolicy_purge_history on the A instance seems to want to connect to the Default instance resulting in Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. Login failed for user 'Machinename\sqlsvc-Default'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>] . • ADODB DB2 DSN using IBMDADB2 provider

  I have a very bizarre issue with trying to establish a working connection to an IBM DB2 server from Classic ASP using ADODB. On my development server I am running IIS and have a local instance of DB2 running. When I create a system DSN on this server and try to connect to it with ADODB, I have to specify Provider=IBMDADB2; in my connection along with the DSN name - failure to include the provider and my connection won't work. On my production server(s), I have one running IIS and a second system running an instance of DB2. When I create a system DSN on the production IIS server and try to connect to it with ADODB, I cannot specify the provider, otherwise it throws an uncatchable error in an external module (I assume it's referring to the DB2 module) if I try to do anything past get a connection (oddly, opening the connection itself doesn't throw an error - but if I run a query it does). If I remove the Provider=IBMDADB2; from the connection string (thus I just have DSN=some_name), it works fine. On both systems I can verify through the ODBC connection manager that the DSN's work and can connect to the databases, and on both systems I have made sure to set the correct (only) instance of DB2 as the default. Can anyone tell me why I have to have different connection strings for the development and production servers? I would like to be able to use the same connection string for both environments if at all possible. If that means either specifying a provider for both, or for neither I don't care which - I would just like to know what's going on and how to fix it.

  Hello, everyone! I have an old Toshiba Satellite 4015CDT, with Pentium II MMX, 32MB RAM, 4GB HDD. It also has one USB 1.0 port, parallel and serial ports, a 3.5" floppy drive and a CD-ROM drive (probably almost dead). I've installed NetBSD on this machine (full install) and now I want to connect it to the Internet. Although it has one PCMCIA modem card in it, it is obviously not an option. I've narrowed down my available options to the following: Connect a USB wireless adapter. I have a Realtek RTL8192 adapter, but although the system gives me the device's name (through dmesg) it fails to recognize it as a network adapter. Connect the laptop to another machine through a serial connection, so that the other machine will serve as a bridge to the Internet. Here is the page from the NetBSD documentation on serial connections. Unfortunately, I was not able to find anything on bridging there. I would very much appreciate your suggestions on the topic. • Router for creating site to site VPN to server provider using Cisco ASA 5540

  We have dedicated servers hosted for us by a third party, we connect to these over a VPN. My server provider uses Cisco ASA 5540 as VPN devices. Currently we're using software clients on individual machines to connect to this VPN, either: Cisco VPN Client Shrew Soft VPN Connect However, I'm looking to purchase a new load balancing router for our office and thought this could be an opportunity to get VPN client duties taken over by hardware. We could then create a permanent VPN tunnel that could be used by anyone on the network with no software client necessary. Sadly I'm not the most knowledgeable on this kind of stuff so is: 1) This a realizable goal? Next I need to know what kind of hardware I will need. I'm not looking to spend lots of money on this (~$500), so doubtful I can afford any Cisco kit. Therefore, this is the most promising candidate I've seen (as far as my limited knowledge goes): Draytek Vigor 2955 - http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2955.html 2) Would this be compatible with the Cisco kit my server provider uses? 3) If not, are there any alternatives I should consider? • OSX telnet not working from localhost

  Telnet from my mac OSx doesn't work while it works from the AWS instances and other networks. I have no local firewalls. Nothing related in /var/log/system In the below transcript, the telnet hangs at "Trying 74.125.136.26..." I have tried many different addresses across multiple domains.. same result !
