• Asynch operation in WinForm app

  I have a WinForms app. that when a button is clicked retrieves a bunch of data from database formats it and displays it to the end user. The operation can take 10 - 30 seconds. I would like to display a message to the user in a Dialog just saying "Be patient the operation is running" while the operation is running and then close when the data is ready to be presented to the end user. What is the best way to do this, start a new thread, use a Delegate or something else?

• Entity Framework with 'Get' Stored Procedure that returns Entities

  Hello, I am attempting to execute a stored procedure that returns data with exactly the same columns as that of a table Entity I have in my project. I set the 'Returns a Collection Of' property in the 'Add Function Import' dialog to my entity type. I get a NullReferenceException error when executing the stored procedure and on further digging it seems that it is because the 'EntityKey' property is missing. Is there anything I can do to tell it to ignore those special properties of the Entity? I already have a partial class for that entity with '[ScaffoldColumn(false)]' but that doesn't seem to matter. • How to launch a Windows process as 64-bit from 32-bit code?

  To pop up the UAC dialog in Vista when writing to the HKLM registry hive, we opt to not use the Win32 Registry API, as when Vista permissions are lacking, we'd need to relaunch our entire application with administrator rights. Instead, we do this trick: ShellExecute(hWnd, "runas" /* display UAC prompt on Vista */, windir + "\\Reg", "add HKLM\\Software\\Company\\KeyName /v valueName /t REG_MULTI_TZ /d ValueData", NULL, SW_HIDE); This solution works fine, besides that our application is a 32-bit one, and it runs the REG.EXE command as it would be a 32-bit app using the WOW compatibility layer! :( If REG.EXE is ran from the command line, it's properly ran in 64-bit mode. This matters, because if it's ran as a 32-bit app, the registry keys will end up in the wrong place due to registry reflection. So is there any way to launch a 64-bit app programmatically from a 32-bit app and not have it run using the WOW64 subsystem like its parent 32-bit process (i.e. a "*" suffix in the Task Manager)?

• WebKit gets blank when clicking on the menu toolbar

  Hi y'all. I've embebed a WebKit view into a modal dialog using Carbon and appereantly everything works fine. However there's a little problem. When I click on the menu toolbar the view gets completely blank getting visible only when I interact with it. Seems like the control stops reciving the 'paint window' event when I call MenuSelect function. All the events are managed by the parent window because of the nature of the application (videogame). Does anybody know what this behaviour is due to and how can I avoid it? Thanks for all.

• Need help in downloading file with header() function

  Hi. I'm trying to explain as best as I can, sorry for my English. I have a list of links, each linked to a php file with an id by parameters (ex. download.php?id=1 or ?id=2 and so on). This file create a new instance of a class witch return the correct header of the files so it displays the save dialog box of the browser. Now I need to check if the files is already downloaded in past (The first time you downloaded it I add a field on the mysql db). This checks go ahead if you haven't download the files, else return false. Here is the problem, when it returns false or something else the browser redirect me to the download.php file, so I get a blank page or what I'm echoing. I need that if the file is already download it show me a js alert for advice ppl. Hope you can understand what i mean. Thanks for help

However is any of these things possible: EITHER * Have another user download a file which is still being uploaded by another user ( in progress ) OR * Make a user automaticly ( instant ) download a file from another users PC through our website OR * Make a user automaticly (instant) download a file from our server ( so it's directly downloaded to the users pc and the progress shown on our website of the download progress, without the normal internet explorer dialog downloading the file or firefox ). • [C#] Running elevated applications on user login with UAC?

  I need to start a program every time the user logs in, but I cannot do this without being met by a UAC dialog asking for permissions for that application. Is there any way to have an application start up on user login without the user having to answer the UAC prompt? I was thinking about running a service, but this would be a last resort. I saw something about an Application Compatibility Toolkit to disable UAC for certain applications, but I feel this is too big of a hassle - even services would be easier to program. I was just wondering if there is an even easier solution I am missing. Thanks in advance.

  A quick Google search for solutions to Focus Stealing in Windows reveals two main result categories: People suggesting incomplete solutions involving the ForegroundLockTimeout registry entry (or TweakUI, which I believe simply changes the aforementioned registry entry), which isn't very effective. Incessant hordes of Windows users complaining about it. It's particularly annoying in two common scenarios: Something triggers a program to popup a dialog window in the background while a fullscreen app is focused, causing the fullscreen app to minimize. A window steals focus while you are typing, stealing all of your keystrokes. If you happen to press Space, Enter, or trigger a keyboard shortcut (like Y for Yes), it can cause completely undesirable outcomes.   Hey Now, Is there a SQL Server Management studio add-on/plug-in that will enhance the tab switching dialog box when Ctrl+Tab is used to switch tabs to provide a thumbnail image of the tab? When we use Ctrl+Tab to switch tabs we see the list of tabs open. When we switch tabs in Visual Studio we get a small thumb nail preview screen of the tab along with the tab names. It would be great if there was an add-on that we could install to provide an image in addition to the file names. Thx, Catto

• Can you detect if and excel find and replace is active during worksheet_change()?

  Hi I've just crashed excel using amazon spreadsheet to update feed. When doing find and replace [replace all] with 2 cells selected after the first replacement the worksheet_change() function finished with the whole spreadsheet selected. This meant that the replacements took place outside of the original area. Unfortunatly the replcement text included the find text and each replacement re-selected the entire area excel ran until it ran out of space then crashed. Pressing control-break brings up the vba dialog STOP/CONTINUE/DEBUG. DEBUG is greyed out as amazon had protected the sheet. STOP would stop one run but would then continue to crash. CONTINUE would switch back to the current change and continue to crash. Is there any way to detect if a find&replace operation is in action whilst executing excel vba? Regards John

  Hi there, i have a problem understanding how this could/should be solved. I have two functions. In the first function ( I call it loadData() ) I'm doing an asyncronous request to the server to load some data. In the second function ( saveData() ) I'm also doing an asyn request to the server to write some data. In the callback of this request I'm callin loadData() to refresh the data. Now the problem: In the saveData() function I want to wait for loadData() to be finished bevore I show a dialog (like alert('Data saved')) I guess this is a common problem, but I couldn't find the solution for it (if there is one..) A solution would be to make the requests syncronous, but the framework I'm using doesn't offer that and I hope there's a better solution.. Thanks to all!

• GetWindowLongPtr fails if called when handling WM_CREATE

  Calling the GetWindowLongPtr function for a dialog box with the DWL_USER parameter fails when done from the WM_CREATE handler. It gives no error (checked that, the return value is always zero), which, according to the MSDN documentation, occurs only if SetWindowLongPtr has not been called previously. However, I call it after registering the window class, and properly call the SetWindowPos after that. Finally, calling GetWindowLongPtr in any other event handler, that is, later than WM_CREATE, works fine. Is there something I'm missing in the initialization sequence, or maybe the messages are sent in some not so obvious order?

  I am thinking of setting up a global, default Exception handler for my (Android) Mobile application(which uses Java syntax) using Thread.setDefaultUncaughtExceptionHandler(...) call. I am thinking of just displaying an Alert Dialog with appropriate message to the user. Are there any gotchas, caveats and rules that one needs to follow when setting DefaultExceptionHandlers? Any best practices like making sure that the process is killed, full stack trace is written to logs etc. ? Links to documentation, tutorials etc. that can throw some light on this are welcome. • Is it possible to make a script/plugin for Finder to toggle hidden files without relaunching?

  There are several ways how to toggle hidden files in Finder - via a shell command, or AppleScript, or Automator action, or even a Dashboard widget. All of them are doing the same thing and unfortunately require to close and reopen Finder windows, which is quite annoying. On the other hand, for the Open File dialog one can easily toggle hidden files by pressing Command+Shift+Period. Is it possible to make a script or plugin for Finder to toggle hidden files w/o relaunching? How would you make it?

  Hi I am using asp.net mvc 1.0 and I want to return a XML file but I also want to return a strongly typed data back so I can update some fields. Like the XML file will contain users who failed to be inserted into the database. So I want that to appear as a dialog save box what asp.net mvc return file() would do. However I also want to return on the page like values like how many users failed to be added, how many users where added, etc. So I want to use scafolding with the class file I want to pass it along. If this was a view I could pass it along as an object model but I don't see a parameter for that in File(). I also don't want to save the xml file onto the harddrive I want to do it through memory. So have a link that would display on the page to download the file and show the the data I want would not be desired.

• How to pass a value between Silverlight pages for WP7?

  I've got a MainPage.xaml page a Detail.xaml page. I've passed variables to the Detail.xaml from MainPage.xaml by using a static variable and referencing it in Detail.xaml (the detail page is acting like a dialog). However once I've updated the content of another object, I want to call a method in MainPage.xaml to refresh the content of that page using the updated object from the Detail.xaml page. I assume I am not using the correct paradigm for this and should probably be using MVVM or something but I'm not familiar with the implementation and was hoping there was a simple way to do this?

• Zend Studio 7.1 PHPUnit Test Case wizard does not populate "Element to Test"

  When I follow the instructions in ZS documentation to create a phpunit test case, the wizard returns no objects to select on the "Element to Test" line. Selecting "browse" provides an empty dialog box. The PHPUnit path in my preferences shows "/Applications/zend/zs710/plugins/com.zend.php.phpunit_7.1.0.v20091120-0900/resources/library/". What else can I check to see why I cannot create a test case? I'm new to ZS and PHP, so I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. Thanks.

And in the yahoo rich text editor there is one link of image insert.. but i don't know why its not opening. on click of it. the image insert dialog is not opening. all things are working properly. Why is it not opening? and if is there anyway to only remove the image insert icon from text editor.

• Streaming data to the browser as a file of unknown size

  I have some data which is queried from the database and I'd like to send it to the client as a csv file. The file size varies each time due to the fact that the DB data returned can be of any size. Instead of saving this file to the hard disk, I'd like to send it to the browser at the same time it's being processed into a CSV by my algorithm. Response.Write seems useless. For some reason, the file download dialog is only displayed once my processing is finished. This seems odd as I'm writting all my output to the Response.Output stream. I have downloaded files on the web before where the filesize is not known and the browser just keeps on downloading. Is there any way to achieve this? • Creating quick GUI front ends

  Hi, I wanted to have a GUI front-end for a script that accepts numerous command-line options, most of them are UNIX paths. So I thought rather than typing them in (even with auto-completion) every time, I'd create a GUI front end which contains text boxes with buttons beside them, which when clicked will invoke the file browser dialogue. Later, I thought I'd extend this to other scripts which would sure require a different set of GUI elements. This made me think if there's any existing app that would let me create a GUI dialog, after parsing some kind of description of the items that I want that window should contain. I know of programs like Zenity, but I think it's doesn't give me what I want. For example, if I were to use it for the first script, it'll end up flashing sequence of windows in succession rather than getting everything done from a single window. So, basically I'm looking at some program that lets me create a window from a text description, probably XML or the like. Please suggest. Thanks Jeenu

• Android: how to update UI dynamically?

  I have an Android app and I need to change UI dynamically: ex: when user presses a button, I want to change the current activity's views and, as in some cases there are a lot of views involved, I need to display a ProgressDialog. I have been using an AsyncTask, but I think that it is not the best solution, because AsyncTask's doInBackground runs a different thread, so I can't update UI from there - I have to use runOnUiThread, which runs the code in the UI Thread, but freezes the progress dialog that is shown. I guess there should be more people with similar issues, as updating UI while displaying a ProgressDialog seems to be something done regularly by applications. So does anyone have a solution to this?

• Windows service - supplying arguments in "path to executable"

  I cannot figure out how to pass (constant) arguments into my Windows service when it is started. I'm using the standard .NET classes like ServiceBase to implement (and ServiceProcessInstaller and ServiceInstaller to install) my service. On the general tab of a Windows Service properties dialog box (once installed), there's a "Path to executable" in which I can see that some of the standard Windows services have command line arguments specified. System.ServiceProcess.ServiceBase.OnStart takes string[] args, which I presume would enable these arguments to be accessed from within .NET code. Are there some properties on ServiceProcessInstaller or ServiceInstaller that I can set to allow me to pass startup arguments to my own service, or does anyone know how it's supposed to be done?

  My application have a configuration xml-file. That file contains more than 50 program settings. At the present time I read and save each program setting separately. I guess It is not effi?iently for such tasks. I need something that can auto-generate a code for load and save my program settings using predefined xml-schema. I found a dataset in Add New Item dialog. Unfortunately, i cannot add new code to dataset1 such as events in set-accessors of properties because of this // Changes to this file may cause incorrect behavior and will be lost if // the code is regenerated. Maybe, there is a tool that allows a user to generate a wrapper for accesing a xml-file ? Such as DataSet1, but with availability to add events.
