• How can I configure Adobe Help so it doesn't chatter so much with Adobe's domain?

  Adobe Help that came with Creative Suite 5 and/or Flash Builder Pro is constantly creating network traffic with an Adobe site, www.wip4.adobe.com In the Adobe Help application Preferences, I find that I can change the settings so that I must manually download updates, but apparently the application still likes to call home and chatter non-stop with www.wip4.adobe.com. I could use something like Little Snitch to block all this spyware-like behavior, but I'd really prefer to just change the application's behavior. Is there a hidden setting or configuration file to adjust this behavior to something more appropriate and polite?

  Hi, I've just installed Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 in Windows XP SP3 When trying to run MS word or any other office app (Excel, PowerPoint), I get the following message: this application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect This also happens with other applications, for instance, Acrobat Reader. A bit of Googling around this error message suggests that this might be due to a mismatch of library versions. In fact, most of the articles and forum messages I found mention a programmer writing an application in Visual C++ and sending it to someone else, who then runs into that error. This is hardly my case ! I looked into Office's files and the manifest file for Excel suggests that Office is trying to use Microsoft VC80.CRT version 8.0.50608.0. However, in my Windows System folder, I can only find the assemblies for 8.0.50727.762 My next step will be trying to find version 8.0.50608.0. How can I find and download it ?

• Best technique for reusing a Windows system image across configurations

  We are a small company that provides solutions for ventilation systems. Part of the solution is a "controller" which communicates with the ventilation equipment. These controllers are simply Dell computers that come with our Windows 7 system image on them and sometimes some special hardware. We typically do a batch of 10 controllers at a time. We have been using Norton Ghost to apply the system image, but this process breaks because Dell changes the system configuration often, and our Windows image now does not contain the correct drivers. This is especially a problem when they change the RAID controller. To improve this, I see 2 options: use some kind of virtualization and install a hypervisor on each PC. This would solve the driver problem, but probably cause trouble with our special hardware. use some method of adding the proper drivers to our Windows image in offline mode. I haven't got much experience in either of these approaches. How would you solve our problem?

  Say I want to use a proxy auto-config file that is stored at C:\proxy.pac. To make Internet Explorer use this configuration I have to specify the pac-file in the LAN settings in the following way: file://C:/proxy.pac But Safari, that uses the same proxy settings, will ignore it in this case. To make Safari use the pac-file I have to reference it as file:///C:/proxy.pac (3 slashes at the beginning) which, according to Wikipedia is the correct format. But this way Internet Explorer will ignore it. Opera and Chrome, that also use the same proxy settings, are fine with both ways but is there another option that will work with Safari and Internet Explorer at the same time?

  I just bought a nettop. It came with WinXP Home. I first installed Win 7 on it. I wasn't that happy with the performance so I decided to go back to XP. I am using an external dvd drive and a Win XP Pro disc. I boot from the dvd drive and during the install get this error: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3. • Storage of various linux config files

  I'm using git to track/store all my various config files required for linux. They're organized as if they live in my home directory, eg: .Xresources .config/ Awesome rc.lua .xmodmap .zshrc vim/ <- submodule emacs/ <- submodule etc I use git submodules for other things like vim/emacs configuration (since I also want to keep those separate repos). I'm thinking of creating a shell script to create the various links to these files. The goal is to make it easier to setup another linux painlessly. Is this a reasonable idea? Is there a preferred approach? I'm mostly interested in hearing how others people store their configs.

• MySQL slow query log logging all queries

  We have a MySQL 5.1.52 Percona Server 11.6 instance that suddenly started logging every single query to the slow query log. The long_query_time configuration is set to 1, yet, suddenly we're seeing every single query (e.g. just saw one that took 0.000563s!). As a result, our log files are growing at an insane pace. We just had to truncate a 180G slow query log file. I make the new config, then create config per every server (placing correct IP), and next: upload them on every server, replacing old ones (rsync over ssh) set on every server a job which reloads webserver at the same time (servers use ntp). - this done by issuing commands by script (to save time for logging in) before adding a job for server reload - there's checksum test of the config on the server) - an a notification in case of fail How do you see such method?   Hi, My hierarchy ask me to setup a production Windows server 2008 virtual machine (HyperV) with SQL 2000 Standard Ed. installed on it. I can't find on the net much information about the relative "compatibility" of SQL2000 on WinSrv2008. Of course I found some obscure answers like : "it's impossible, it's not supported, don't do it". • How to limit server to specific IP addresses with mod_authz_host?

  Hi! I am very new to this area, so please bear with me. :) Right now I am running an Apache HTTP server on my setup, a very basic configuration. The website hosted on it is accessible from anywhere, and I want to limit the access to a specific IP address range. I've looked into this and I found that one Apache module called mod_authz_host handles this. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_authz_host.html The problem is, I haven't managed to find documentation that explains well how to actually do the stuff. How do I actually make sure only a certain range of IP addresses can access my site/server? The machine is running Ubuntu Server 10.10, the web files are stored in /var/www/, the apache2 daemon has its stuff stored in /etc/apache2/ and /usr/lib/apache2/modules/*.   I have a really specific machine configuration in the works that would really be helped out if there were any way to do this...basically what I'm looking for is the opposite of setting CPU Affinity for a process. I want to be able to tell Windows "No applications except [x] are allowed on [these cores]." Is there any mechanism whatsoever for doing this? (Yes, I am aware of some of the potential issues this could cause and I normally would never fool with processor affinities, since the OS usually does a damned good job itself, but this is a pretty odd situation involving some software that is very CPU-bound constantly having to wait on interrupts and DPCs and things from other threads.)

  using the HAProxy, would it be possible to configure an overload protection, to limit the amount of requests sent to the backing http server(s) to a given rate (z.B 100 Request per second ). If the threshold is exceeded requests should be answered with a default response. I am interested in requests per second not connections per second as a connection can have many requests. And yes to improve the servers is not an option here. If yes a configuration example to achieve that would be excellent. Thank you in advance.

  I would like to automate code-first database generation during the automated CI build of a web project in Team Foundation Server 2010. When run locally the tests create a code-first database specified by the connection string in the app.config of the tests project. How do I configure the TFS Build Configuration to mimic this behaviour on the TFS build server? Edit The problem, it turns out, was that the TFS build server was successfully running the test which was using the default connection string in the app.config which pointed to the local SQL Server, not where I expected it. The solution was to use SlowCheetah on the TFS server as a means to transform the App.config file using the QA transform as per this blog article.

• What could slow Excel on one PC but not another?

  I have 2 PC with the same configuration. I open an Excel File (~5M) on the network from both PC. The opening is not the fastest but that's ok. The problem is that on one PC, Excel is really slow. I mean if I hit the left arrow 10 times, I will have finished hitting like 3 seconds before the active cell is the next 10th one. The file contains graphics that takes time to initialize on the slowed computer. Both PC have the same graphic cards, same driver version; both remote access to the file on a local network. Both configured to perform calculations automatically. Both Excel 2007. Both Windows 32bit. On the other PC it runs really fast. I really don't know what to check next. Any suggestions ?

• ChannelFactory don't have an address on the endpoint, why?

  When I create a new instance of a ChannelFactory: var factory = new ChannelFactory<IMyService>(); and that I create a new channel, I have an exception saying that the address of the Endpoint is null. My configuration inside my web.config is as mentioned and everything is as it is supposed to be (especially the address of the endpoint).   I'm having problems configuring my ape-server. First, I reside behind a corporate firewall where our own DNS servers are maintained. I requested a domain name for my server and was provided uslonsweb003.us.mycompany.com from my IT group. Therefore, my website works and can be accessed via (intranet only) at http://uslonsweb003.us.mycompany.com/test.php. I followed the instructions at ape-project.org and run the Check Tool at the end only to find I get an error stating: Running test : Contacting APE Server (adding frequency) Can't contact APE Server. Please check the folowing url is pointing to your APE server : http://0.uslonsweb003.us.mycompany.com:6969 my /etc/apache2/apache2.conf module looks as follows: <VirtualHost *:80> Servername uslonsweb003.us.mycompany.com ServerAlias ape.uslonsweb003.us.mycompany.com ServerAlias *.ape.uslonsweb003.us.mycompany.com DocumentRoot "/var/www/" </VirtualHost> my /var/www/ape-jsf/Demos/config.js config section looks as follows: APE.Config.baseUrl = 'http://uslonsweb003.us.mycompany.com/ape-jsf'; APE.Config.domain = 'uslonsweb003.us.mycompany.com'; APE.Config.server = 'uslonsweb003.us.mycompany.com:6969'; The instructions at ape-project.org tell me that the APE.Config.server should be `ape.mydomain.com:6969'; but that does not work (I'm assuming because my corporate DNS does not understand the 'ape' before the domain name since 'ape' was not registered with the IT DNS). So therefore, I changed it to what you see above. Please help!! It sounds like (since I'm within a corporate network) I would ask my IT group to add the following lines to the DNS configuration file on their end: ape IN A x.x.x.x ; IP address of my APE server *.ape IN CNAME ape I just want to make sure this is all I have to have them add (or if this is even correct) before I ask them.
