  • What are the design decisions involved in choosing how to expose a Java web application?

    - by Gary Rowe
There are many ways to expose a Java web application to the consumer: application container (JBoss etc), servlet container (Tomcat etc), OSGi (Knopflerfish etc), self-executable WAR (Winstone etc) and so on. Are there any clear considerations where one approach should be favoured over another? As an example, could a collection of self-executable WARs running as raw Unix processes outperform the same applications deployed within Tomcat taking into account administration and scalability concerns?

  • How can I get a java extension in LibreOffice to use the GTK+ theme?

    - by Roland Taylor
I'm using LibreOffice with the LanguageTool extension, and it is kinda out of place (the options dialog at least) because it uses the open solaris default theme instead of my gtk+ theme. Is there a way to get it to use my gtk theme? Screenshot: Edited my question - it's not the default theme it uses, my apologies Additional details - it appears to be a webstart application or something, but I'm not a java expert so I don't know for sure :P

  • Ideal web application framework for newcomers and whether it is better to use Java or PHP based framework?

    - by Pawan
My primary question is whether a Java based web application framework is better or a PHP based one and why? Moreover, if I were just starting web development then what would be some ideal frameworks to start with, considering I may want to make a full CMS out of it later? I am not looking for a 'best', rather some good recommendations as I understand that CodeIgnitor has not got a long way to go from here : http://heybigname.com/2012/05/06/why-codeigniter-is-dead/

  • When will java change to 64bit addressing and how can we get there faster?

    - by Ido Tamir
Having to work with large files now, I would like to know when the java libraries will start switching to long for indexing in their methods. From Inputstreams read(byte[] b, int off, int len) - funnily there is long skip(long) also - to MappedByteBuffer to the basic indexing of arrays and lists, everything is adressed as int. Is there an official plan for enhancment of the libraries? Do initiatives exist to pressure oracle into enhancing the libraries, if there is no official plan yet?

  • How to make my Oracle update/insert action through Java faster?

    - by gunbuster363
I am facing a problem in my company that is - our program's speed is not fast enough. To be more specific, we are telecommunication company and this program handle call/internet serfing transaction made by every mobile phone users in our city. Because the amount of download content made by the iphone users is just too much, our program cannot handle them fast enough. The situation is, the amount of transaction made by users are double of the transaction processed by our program. Most of the running time of the program are dominated by DB transactions. I've search through the internet and browsed some sites ( for example: http://www.javaperformancetuning.com/tips/rawtips.shtml ) talking about Java performace in DB, but I cannot find a suggestion suitable for us. These advices are not applicable/already used, for instance: 1. Use prepared statements. Use parameterized SQL Already used prepared statement. Each time will use different parameter by clear parameters and set parameters. 2. Tune the SQL to minimize the data returned (e.g. not 'SELECT *'). Sure, already used. 3. Use connection pooling. We hold a single connection during the program's execution. And I doubt that pooling cannot solve the problem because our program act as 1 user, so there are no problem for concurrent access to DB. If anyone of you think pooling is good, please tell me why. Thanks. 4. Try to combine queries and batch updates. Cannot do it. Every query/insert/update is depend on the database's information. For example, we look up the DB for the client's information, if we cannot find his usage, we insert the usage into DB, otherwise we do update. 5. Close resources (Connections, Statements, ResultSets) when finished Sure. 6. Select the fastest JDBC driver. I don't know. I've search on the internet about the type of driver available and I am very confused. We use oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver and we use thin instead of oci, that's all I know. In addition, our program is a two-tier way ( java <- oracle ) 7. Turn off auto-commit already done that. Looking forwards to any help.

  • Is there any reason in a Java program for a special naming for a function arguments?

    - by gasan
I'd like to know, why would I want to have a special prefixes for a function arguments, like "p_name", "p_age", "p_sex"? On the one hand it helps to distinguish parameter from local variable or field further in the function body, but would it help? On the other hand, I didn't saw such naming recommendations anywhere including official Java language conventions. Please advise any reasons for using such naming policy

  • Is there a good reason I shouldn't use a java applet for a game?

    - by ryeguy
I want to make a multiplayer browser-based game. The nice thing about using an applet is that I can make the client and the server in the same language (java/closure/scala/etc). I know there's html5 and javascript, but server side javascript isn't as mature as the jvm platform and browser support is still kind of flaky. Applets don't seem to be widely used (except for Runescape), but is there a reason they're unsuitable or is it just because of the bad reputation they developed in their infancy?

    - by Vaishnavi Kanduri
I'm making a virtual mall using NetBeans IDE 7.3.1 I inserted images using the following steps: Drag and drop label onto frame Go to label properties Click on ellipsis of 'icon' option Import to project, select desired image Resize or reposition it accordingly. Then, I saved the project, copied the project folder into a pendrive, tried to 'Open Project' in mate's laptop, using the same Java Netbeans IDE version. When I tried to open the frames, they displayed empty labels, without images. What went wrong?

  • Where should you store variables for a search program in java?

    - by Bored915
I'm wondering which is a more effective storage method in java. Would be better to save variables that will not change in a class or a resource? They're going to be variables that contain a set amount so that later a search program will go through the list of variables so as to recognize possible options. Also if there is a more efficient method of storing them please say so or if i doesn't matter where i store them.

  • How to compile jsoup through Ant?

    - by JackWM
I tried to use Ant to compile the jsoup source. I can compile successfully, but cannot pass the test. Here is the process: jsoup version: 1.6.3 ; Ant version: 1.8.2 the source of jsoup is in the directory src/ I made a build file src/build.xml This file contains <project name="jsoup"> <target name="compile"> <mkdir dir="build/classes"/> <javac srcdir="src" destdir="build/classes" includeantruntime="false"/> </target> <target name="jar"> <mkdir dir="build/jar"/> <jar destfile="build/jar/jsoup.jar" basedir="build/classes"> <manifest> <attribute name="Main-Class" value="StateTrace"/> </manifest> </jar> </target> <target name="run"> <!--<java jar="build/jar/jsoup.jar" input="htmls/index.html" fork="true"/>--> <exec executable="java"> <arg value="-jar"/> <arg value="build/jar/jsoup.jar"/> <arg value="htmls/index.html"/> </exec> </target> </project> Note: 1. StateTrace.java is my own test program; 2. htmls/index.html is the input to StateTrace.java. Then I compile and run it with Ant: > ant compile > ant jar > ant run After this, I got err like: run: [exec] Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError [exec] at org.jsoup.nodes.Entities$EscapeMode.<clinit>(Unknown Source) [exec] at org.jsoup.nodes.Document$OutputSettings.<init>(Unknown Source) [exec] at org.jsoup.nodes.Document.<init>(Unknown Source) [exec] at org.jsoup.parser.TreeBuilder.initialiseParse(Unknown Source) [exec] at org.jsoup.parser.TreeBuilder.parse(Unknown Source) [exec] at org.jsoup.parser.HtmlTreeBuilder.parse(Unknown Source) [exec] at org.jsoup.parser.Parser.parse(Unknown Source) [exec] at org.jsoup.Jsoup.parse(Unknown Source) [exec] at StateTrace.main(Unknown Source) [exec] Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException [exec] at java.util.Properties$LineReader.readLine(Properties.java:418) [exec] at java.util.Properties.load0(Properties.java:337) [exec] at java.util.Properties.load(Properties.java:325) [exec] at org.jsoup.nodes.Entities.loadEntities(Unknown Source) [exec] at org.jsoup.nodes.Entities.<clinit>(Unknown Source) [exec] ... 9 more [exec] Result: 1 BUILD SUCCESSFUL Total time: 0 seconds However, if I manually compiled all the java source, like javac src/org/jsoup/*.java src/org/jsoup/parser/*.java src/org/jsoup/examples/*.java src/org/jsoup/nodes/*.java src/org/jsoup/safety/*.java src/org/jsoup/select/*.java src/org/jsoup/helper/*.java I could compile successfully and pass my test. Any clue? Thanks!

  • How to use EJB 3.1 DI in Servlet ? (Could not inject session bean by @EJB from web application)

    - by kislo_metal
I am tying to merging web application(gwt, jpa) to an separate 2 application(business login in ejb/jpa and web client in gwt). Currently i can`t inject my beans from web application (simple servlet) I am using glassfish v3. module limbo(ejb jar) is in dependency of module lust (war). If I use lust with compiler output of limbo everything work perfect (if ejb in web application and the are deploying together as one application). Have I messed some container configuration ? Here is my steps: I have some limbo.jar (ejb-jar) deployed to ejb container. I do not use any ejb-jar.xml, only annotations. package ua.co.inferno.limbo.persistence.beans; import javax.ejb.Remote; @Remote public interface IPersistentServiceRemote { ArrayList<String> getTerminalACPList(); ArrayList<String> getBoxACPList(); ArrayList<String> getCNPList(); ArrayList<String> getCNSList(); String getProductNamebyID(int boxid); ArrayList<String> getRegionsList(String lang); long getSequence(); void persistEntity (Object ent); } package ua.co.inferno.limbo.persistence.beans; import ua.co.inferno.limbo.persistence.entitis.EsetChSchemaEntity; import ua.co.inferno.limbo.persistence.entitis.EsetKeyActionsEntity; @Local public interface IPersistentService { ArrayList<String> getTerminalACPList(); ArrayList<String> getBoxACPList(); ArrayList<String> getCNPList(); ArrayList<String> getCNSList(); String getProductNamebyID(int boxid); ArrayList<String> getRegionsList(String lang); long getSequence(); long persistPurchaseBox(EsetRegPurchaserEntity rp); void removePurchaseTempBox(EsetRegPurchaserTempEntity rpt); EsetRegionsEntity getRegionsById(long rid); void persistEntity (Object ent); } package ua.co.inferno.limbo.persistence.beans; import ua.co.inferno.limbo.persistence.entitis.EsetChSchemaEntity; import ua.co.inferno.limbo.persistence.entitis.EsetKeyActionsEntity; import ua.co.inferno.limbo.persistence.entitis.EsetRegBoxesEntity; import javax.ejb.Stateless; import javax.persistence.EntityManager; import javax.persistence.PersistenceContext; @Stateless(name = "PersistentService") public class PersistentServiceEJB implements IPersistentService, IPersistentServiceRemote{ @PersistenceContext(unitName = "Limbo") EntityManager em; public PersistentServiceEJB() { } ......... } Than i trying to use PersistentService session bean(included in limbo.jar) from web application in lust.war (the limbo.jar & lust.war is not in ear) package ua.co.lust; import ua.co.inferno.limbo.persistence.beans.IPersistentService; import javax.ejb.EJB; import javax.servlet.ServletException; import javax.servlet.annotation.WebServlet; import javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet; import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest; import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse; import java.io.IOException; @WebServlet(name = "ServletTest", urlPatterns = {"/"}) public class ServletTest extends HttpServlet { protected void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException { service(request, response); } protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException { service(request, response); } @EJB private IPersistentService pService; public void service(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException { String hi = pService.getCNPList().toString(); System.out.println("testBean.hello method returned: " + hi); System.out.println("In MyServlet::init()"); System.out.println("all regions" + pService.getRegionsList("ua")); System.out.println("all regions" + pService.getBoxACPList()); } } web.xm <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <web-app xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_3_0.xsd" version="3.0"> <servlet> <servlet-name>ServletTest</servlet-name> <servlet-class>ua.co.lust.ServletTest</servlet-class> </servlet> </web-app> When servelt is loading i ge 404 eror (The requested resource () is not available.) • AccessControlException: access denied - caller function failed to load properties file

    - by Michael Mao
Hi all: I am having a jar archive environment which is gonna call my class in a folder like this: java -jar "emarket.jar" ../tournament 100 My compiled class is deployed into the ../tournament folder, this command runs well. After I changed my code to load a properties file, it gets the following exception message: Exception in thread "main" java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.io.FilePermission agent.properties read) at java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkRead(Unknown Source) at java.io.FileInputStream.<init>(Unknown Source) at java.io.FileInputStream.<init>(Unknown Source) at Agent10479475.getPropertiesFromConfigFile(Agent10479475.java:110) at Agent10479475.<init>(Agent10479475.java:100) at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(Unknown Source) at sun.reflect.DelegatingConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(Unknown Source) at java.lang.reflect.Constructor.newInstance(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Class.newInstance0(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Class.newInstance(Unknown Source) at emarket.client.EmarketSandbox.instantiateClientObjects(EmarketSandbox.java:92) at emarket.client.EmarketSandbox.<init>(EmarketSandbox.java:27) at emarket.client.EmarketSandbox.main(EmarketSandbox.java:166) I am wondering why this security checking will fail. I issue the getPropertitiesFromConfigFile() function inside my class's default constructor, like this: public class Agent10479475 extends AbstractClientAgent { //default constructor public Agent10479475() { //set all properties to their default values in constructor FT_THRESHOLD = 400; FT_THRESHOLD_MARGIN = 50; printOut("Now loading properties from a config file...", ""); getPropertiesFromConfigFile(); printOut("Finished loading",""); } private void getPropertiesFromConfigFile() { Properties props = new Properties(); try { props.load(new FileInputStream("agent.properties")); FT_THRESHOLD = Long.parseLong(props.getProperty("FT_THRESHOLD")); FT_THRESHOLD_MARGIN = Long.parseLong(props.getProperty("FT_THRESHOLD_MARGIN ")); } catch(java.io.FileNotFoundException fnfex) { printOut("CANNOT FIND PROPERTIES FILE :", fnfex); } catch(java.io.IOException ioex) { printOut("IOEXCEPTION OCCURED :", ioex); } } } My class is loading its own .properties file under the same folder. why would the Java environment complains about such a denial of access? Must I config the emarket.client.EmarketSandbox class, which is not written by me and stored inside the emarket.jar, to access my agent.properties file? Any hints or suggestions is much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

  • Android: restful API service

    - by Martyn
Hey, I'm looking to make a service which I can use to make calls to a web based rest api. I've spent a couple of days looking through stackoverflow.com, reading books and looking at articles whilst playing about with some code and I can't get anything which I'm happy with. Basically I want to start a service on app init then I want to be able to ask that service to request a url and return the results. In the meantime I want to be able to display a progress window or something similar. I've created a service currently which uses IDL, I've read somewhere that you only really need this for cross app communication, so think these needs stripping out but unsure how to do callbacks without it. Also when I hit the post(Config.getURL("login"), values) the app seems to pause for a while (seems weird - thought the idea behind a service was that it runs on a different thread!) Currently I have a service with post and get http methods inside, a couple of AIDL files (for two way communication), a ServiceManager which deals with starting, stopping, binding etc to the service and I'm dynamically creating a Handler with specific code for the callbacks as needed. I don't want anyone to give me a complete code base to work on, but some pointers would be greatly appreciated; even if it's to say I'm doing it completely wrong. I'm pretty new to Android and Java dev so if there are any blindingly obvious mistakes here - please don't think I'm a rubbish developer, I'm just wet behind the ears and would appreciate being told exactly where I'm going wrong. Anyway, code in (mostly) full (really didn't want to put this much code here, but I don't know where I'm going wrong - apologies in advance): public class RestfulAPIService extends Service { final RemoteCallbackList<IRemoteServiceCallback> mCallbacks = new RemoteCallbackList<IRemoteServiceCallback>(); public void onStart(Intent intent, int startId) { super.onStart(intent, startId); } public IBinder onBind(Intent intent) { return binder; } public void onCreate() { super.onCreate(); } public void onDestroy() { super.onDestroy(); mCallbacks.kill(); } private final IRestfulService.Stub binder = new IRestfulService.Stub() { public void doLogin(String username, String password) { Message msg = new Message(); Bundle data = new Bundle(); HashMap<String, String> values = new HashMap<String, String>(); values.put("username", username); values.put("password", password); String result = post(Config.getURL("login"), values); data.putString("response", result); msg.setData(data); msg.what = Config.ACTION_LOGIN; mHandler.sendMessage(msg); } public void registerCallback(IRemoteServiceCallback cb) { if (cb != null) mCallbacks.register(cb); } }; private final Handler mHandler = new Handler() { public void handleMessage(Message msg) { // Broadcast to all clients the new value. final int N = mCallbacks.beginBroadcast(); • Google Maps API v3 - Different markers/labels on different zoom levels

    - by krikara
I was wondering if it is possible that Google has a feature to view different markers on different zoom levels. For example, on zoom level 1, I want one marker over China with the label saying "5". And as the user zooms in, lets say on zoom level 4, I want the previous marker and label to disappear. And I want to have 5 new markers/labels, each on a different city in China all saying "1". Thus China will say a number and all the cities in China will say numbers adding up to China's number. The key concept I am trying to figure out here is how to hide markers and labels based on zoom levels. A constraint for me is that I am living in China currently where google is censored, so a lot of online documents are censored for me, including many of google's documentations. And when I copy the source code directly to my computer and replace all the icons with markers, the markers still don't appear. I can't seem to figure how to make markers appear using the marker Manager. http://google-maps-utility-library-v3.googlecode.com/svn/tags/markermanager/1.0/examples/weather_map.html

  • How to handle screen orientation change when progress dialog and background thread active?

    - by Heikki Toivonen
    My program does some network activity in a background thread. Before starting, it pops up a progress dialog. The dialog is dismissed on the handler. This all works fine, except when screen orientation changes while the dialog is up (and the background thread is going). At this point the app either crashes, or deadlocks, or gets into a weird stage where the app does not work at all until all the threads have been killed. How can I handle the screen orientation change gracefully? The sample code below matches roughly what my real program does: public class MyAct extends Activity implements Runnable { public ProgressDialog mProgress; // UI has a button that when pressed calls send public void send() { mProgress = ProgressDialog.show(this, "Please wait", "Please wait", true, true); Thread thread = new Thread(this); thread.start(); } public void run() { Thread.sleep(10000); Message msg = new Message(); mHandler.sendMessage(msg); } private final Handler mHandler = new Handler() { @Override public void handleMessage(Message msg) { mProgress.dismiss(); } }; } Stack: E/WindowManager( 244): Activity MyAct has leaked window com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView@433b7150 that was originally added here E/WindowManager( 244): android.view.WindowLeaked: Activity MyAct has leaked window com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView@433b7150 that was originally added here E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewRoot.<init>(ViewRoot.java:178) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.addView(WindowManagerImpl.java:147) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.addView(WindowManagerImpl.java:90) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.Window$LocalWindowManager.addView(Window.java:393) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.Dialog.show(Dialog.java:212) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ProgressDialog.show(ProgressDialog.java:103) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ProgressDialog.show(ProgressDialog.java:91) E/WindowManager( 244): at MyAct.send(MyAct.java:294) E/WindowManager( 244): at MyAct$4.onClick(MyAct.java:174) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.performClick(View.java:2129) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.onTouchEvent(View.java:3543) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.widget.TextView.onTouchEvent(TextView.java:4664) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.View.dispatchTouchEvent(View.java:3198) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:857) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.superDispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1593) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow.superDispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1089) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.Activity.dispatchTouchEvent(Activity.java:1871) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.dispatchTouchEvent(PhoneWindow.java:1577) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.view.ViewRoot.handleMessage(ViewRoot.java:1140) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:88) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) E/WindowManager( 244): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:3739) E/WindowManager( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) E/WindowManager( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:515) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:739) E/WindowManager( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:497) E/WindowManager( 244): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) and: W/dalvikvm( 244): threadid=3: thread exiting with uncaught exception (group=0x4000fe68) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception E/AndroidRuntime( 244): java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: View not attached to window manager E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.findViewLocked(WindowManagerImpl.java:331) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.WindowManagerImpl.removeView(WindowManagerImpl.java:200) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.view.Window$LocalWindowManager.removeView(Window.java:401) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.dismissDialog(Dialog.java:249) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.access$000(Dialog.java:59) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog$1.run(Dialog.java:93) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.Dialog.dismiss(Dialog.java:233) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at MyAct$1.handleMessage(MyAct.java:321) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:88) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:3739) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:515) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:739) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:497) E/AndroidRuntime( 244): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) I/Process ( 46): Sending signal.   • ASP.NET Frameworks and Raw Throughput Performance

    - by Rick Strahl
A few days ago I had a curious thought: With all these different technologies that the ASP.NET stack has to offer, what's the most efficient technology overall to return data for a server request? When I started this it was mere curiosity rather than a real practical need or result. Different tools are used for different problems and so performance differences are to be expected. But still I was curious to see how the various technologies performed relative to each just for raw throughput of the request getting to the endpoint and back out to the client with as little processing in the actual endpoint logic as possible (aka Hello World!). I want to clarify that this is merely an informal test for my own curiosity and I'm sharing the results and process here because I thought it was interesting. It's been a long while since I've done any sort of perf testing on ASP.NET, mainly because I've not had extremely heavy load requirements and because overall ASP.NET performs very well even for fairly high loads so that often it's not that critical to test load performance. This post is not meant to make a point  or even come to a conclusion which tech is better, but just to act as a reference to help understand some of the differences in perf and give a starting point to play around with this yourself. I've included the code for this simple project, so you can play with it and maybe add a few additional tests for different things if you like. Source Code on GitHub I looked at this data for these technologies: ASP.NET Web API ASP.NET MVC WebForms ASP.NET WebPages ASMX AJAX Services  (couldn't get AJAX/JSON to run on IIS8 ) WCF Rest Raw ASP.NET HttpHandlers It's quite a mixed bag, of course and the technologies target different types of development. What started out as mere curiosity turned into a bit of a head scratcher as the results were sometimes surprising. What I describe here is more to satisfy my curiosity more than anything and I thought it interesting enough to discuss on the blog :-) First test: Raw Throughput The first thing I did is test raw throughput for the various technologies. This is the least practical test of course since you're unlikely to ever create the equivalent of a 'Hello World' request in a real life application. The idea here is to measure how much time a 'NOP' request takes to return data to the client. So for this request I create the simplest Hello World request that I could come up for each tech. Http Handler The first is the lowest level approach which is an HTTP handler. public class Handler : IHttpHandler { public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { context.Response.ContentType = "text/plain"; context.Response.Write("Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString()); } public bool IsReusable { get { return true; } } } WebForms Next I added a couple of ASPX pages - one using CodeBehind and one using only a markup page. The CodeBehind page simple does this in CodeBehind without any markup in the ASPX page: public partial class HelloWorld_CodeBehind : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { Response.Write("Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString() ); Response.End(); } } while the Markup page only contains some static output via an expression:<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeBehind="HelloWorld_Markup.aspx.cs" Inherits="AspNetFrameworksPerformance.HelloWorld_Markup" %> Hello World. Time is <%= DateTime. Now %> ASP.NET WebPages WebPages is the freestanding Razor implementation of ASP.NET. Here's the simple HelloWorld.cshtml page:Hello World @DateTime.Now WCF REST WCF REST was the token REST implementation for ASP.NET before WebAPI and the inbetween step from ASP.NET AJAX. I'd like to forget that this technology was ever considered for production use, but I'll include it here. Here's an OperationContract class: [ServiceContract(Namespace = "")] [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)] public class WcfService { [OperationContract] [WebGet] public Stream HelloWorld() { var data = Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes("Hello World" + DateTime.Now.ToString()); var ms = new MemoryStream(data); // Add your operation implementation here return ms; } } WCF REST can return arbitrary results by returning a Stream object and a content type. The code above turns the string result into a stream and returns that back to the client. ASP.NET AJAX (ASMX Services) I also wanted to test ASP.NET AJAX services because prior to WebAPI this is probably still the most widely used AJAX technology for the ASP.NET stack today. Unfortunately I was completely unable to get this running on my Windows 8 machine. Visual Studio 2012  removed adding of ASP.NET AJAX services, and when I tried to manually add the service and configure the script handler references it simply did not work - I always got a SOAP response for GET and POST operations. No matter what I tried I always ended up getting XML results even when explicitly adding the ScriptHandler. So, I didn't test this (but the code is there - you might be able to test this on a Windows 7 box). ASP.NET MVC Next up is probably the most popular ASP.NET technology at the moment: MVC. Here's the small controller: public class MvcPerformanceController : Controller { public ActionResult Index() { return View(); } public ActionResult HelloWorldCode() { return new ContentResult() { Content = "Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString() }; } } ASP.NET WebAPI Next up is WebAPI which looks kind of similar to MVC. Except here I have to use a StringContent result to return the response: public class WebApiPerformanceController : ApiController { [HttpGet] public HttpResponseMessage HelloWorldCode() { return new HttpResponseMessage() { Content = new StringContent("Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString(), Encoding.UTF8, "text/plain") }; } } Testing Take a minute to think about each of the technologies… and take a guess which you think is most efficient in raw throughput. The fastest should be pretty obvious, but the others - maybe not so much. The testing I did is pretty informal since it was mainly to satisfy my curiosity - here's how I did this: I used Apache Bench (ab.exe) from a full Apache HTTP installation to run and log the test results of hitting the server. ab.exe is a small executable that lets you hit a URL repeatedly and provides counter information about the number of requests, requests per second etc. ab.exe and the batch file are located in the \LoadTests folder of the project. An ab.exe command line  looks like this: ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/api/HelloWorld which hits the specified URL 100,000 times with a load factor of 20 concurrent requests. This results in output like this:   It's a great way to get a quick and dirty performance summary. Run it a few times to make sure there's not a large amount of varience. You might also want to do an IISRESET to clear the Web Server. Just make sure you do a short test run to warm up the server first - otherwise your first run is likely to be skewed downwards. ab.exe also allows you to specify headers and provide POST data and many other things if you want to get a little more fancy. Here all tests are GET requests to keep it simple. I ran each test: 100,000 iterations Load factor of 20 concurrent connections IISReset before starting A short warm up run for API and MVC to make sure startup cost is mitigated Here is the batch file I used for the test: IISRESET REM make sure you add REM C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\bin REM to your path so ab.exe can be found REM Warm up ab.exe -n100 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/MvcPerformance/HelloWorldJsonab.exe -n100 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/api/HelloWorldJson ab.exe -n100 -c20 http://localhost/AspNetPerf/WcfService.svc/HelloWorld ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/handler.ashx > handler.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/HelloWorld_CodeBehind.aspx > AspxCodeBehind.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/HelloWorld_Markup.aspx > AspxMarkup.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/AspNetPerf/WcfService.svc/HelloWorld > Wcf.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/MvcPerformance/HelloWorldCode > Mvc.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/api/HelloWorld > WebApi.txt I ran each of these tests 3 times and took the average score for Requests/second, with the machine otherwise idle. I did see a bit of variance when running many tests but the values used here are the medians. Part of this has to do with the fact I ran the tests on my local machine - result would probably more consistent running the load test on a separate machine hitting across the network. I ran these tests locally on my laptop which is a Dell XPS with quad core Sandibridge I7-2720QM @ 2.20ghz and a fast SSD drive on Windows 8. CPU load during tests ran to about 70% max across all 4 cores (IOW, it wasn't overloading the machine). Ideally you can try running these tests on a separate machine hitting the local machine. If I remember correctly IIS 7 and 8 on client OSs don't throttle so the performance here should be Results Ok, let's cut straight to the chase. Below are the results from the tests… It's not surprising that the handler was fastest. But it was a bit surprising to me that the next fastest was WebForms and especially Web Forms with markup over a CodeBehind page. WebPages also fared fairly well. MVC and WebAPI are a little slower and the slowest by far is WCF REST (which again I find surprising). As mentioned at the start the raw throughput tests are not overly practical as they don't test scripting performance for the HTML generation engines or serialization performances of the data engines. All it really does is give you an idea of the raw throughput for the technology from time of request to reaching the endpoint and returning minimal text data back to the client which indicates full round trip performance. But it's still interesting to see that Web Forms performs better in throughput than either MVC, WebAPI or WebPages. It'd be interesting to try this with a few pages that actually have some parsing logic on it, but that's beyond the scope of this throughput test. But what's also amazing about this test is the sheer amount of traffic that a laptop computer is handling. Even the slowest tech managed 5700 requests a second, which is one hell of a lot of requests if you extrapolate that out over a 24 hour period. Remember these are not static pages, but dynamic requests that are being served. Another test - JSON Data Service Results The second test I used a JSON result from several of the technologies. I didn't bother running WebForms and WebPages through this test since that doesn't make a ton of sense to return data from the them (OTOH, returning text from the APIs didn't make a ton of sense either :-) In these tests I have a small Person class that gets serialized and then returned to the client. The Person class looks like this: public class Person { public Person() { Id = 10; Name = "Rick"; Entered = DateTime. Now; } public int Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public DateTime Entered { get; set; } } Here are the updated handler classes that use Person: Handler public class Handler : IHttpHandler { public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { var action = context.Request.QueryString["action"]; if (action == "json") JsonRequest(context); else TextRequest(context); } public void TextRequest(HttpContext context) { context.Response.ContentType = "text/plain"; context.Response.Write("Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString()); } public void JsonRequest(HttpContext context) { var json = JsonConvert.SerializeObject(new Person(), Formatting.None); context.Response.ContentType = "application/json"; context.Response.Write(json); } public bool IsReusable { get { return true; } } } This code adds a little logic to check for a action query string and route the request to an optional JSON result method. To generate JSON, I'm using the same JSON.NET serializer (JsonConvert.SerializeObject) used in Web API to create the JSON response. WCF REST   [ServiceContract(Namespace = "")] [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)] public class WcfService { [OperationContract] [WebGet] public Stream HelloWorld() { var data = Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes("Hello World " + DateTime.Now.ToString()); var ms = new MemoryStream(data); // Add your operation implementation here return ms; } [OperationContract] [WebGet(ResponseFormat=WebMessageFormat.Json,BodyStyle=WebMessageBodyStyle.WrappedRequest)] public Person HelloWorldJson() { // Add your operation implementation here return new Person(); } } For WCF REST all I have to do is add a method with the Person result type.   ASP.NET MVC public class MvcPerformanceController : Controller { // // GET: /MvcPerformance/ public ActionResult Index() { return View(); } public ActionResult HelloWorldCode() { return new ContentResult() { Content = "Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString() }; } public JsonResult HelloWorldJson() { return Json(new Person(), JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet); } } For MVC all I have to do for a JSON response is return a JSON result. ASP.NET internally uses JavaScriptSerializer. ASP.NET WebAPI public class WebApiPerformanceController : ApiController { [HttpGet] public HttpResponseMessage HelloWorldCode() { return new HttpResponseMessage() { Content = new StringContent("Hello World. Time is: " + DateTime.Now.ToString(), Encoding.UTF8, "text/plain") }; } [HttpGet] public Person HelloWorldJson() { return new Person(); } [HttpGet] public HttpResponseMessage HelloWorldJson2() { var response = new HttpResponseMessage(HttpStatusCode.OK); response.Content = new ObjectContent<Person>(new Person(), GlobalConfiguration.Configuration.Formatters.JsonFormatter); return response; } } Testing and Results To run these data requests I used the following ab.exe commands:REM JSON RESPONSES ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/Handler.ashx?action=json > HandlerJson.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/MvcPerformance/HelloWorldJson > MvcJson.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/aspnetperf/api/HelloWorldJson > WebApiJson.txt ab.exe -n100000 -c20 http://localhost/AspNetPerf/WcfService.svc/HelloWorldJson > WcfJson.txt The results from this test run are a bit interesting in that the WebAPI test improved performance significantly over returning plain string content. Here are the results:   The performance for each technology drops a little bit except for WebAPI which is up quite a bit! From this test it appears that WebAPI is actually significantly better performing returning a JSON response, rather than a plain string response. Snag with Apache Benchmark and 'Length Failures' I ran into a little snag with Apache Benchmark, which was reporting failures for my Web API requests when serializing. As the graph shows performance improved significantly from with JSON results from 5580 to 6530 or so which is a 15% improvement (while all others slowed down by 3-8%). However, I was skeptical at first because the WebAPI test reports showed a bunch of errors on about 10% of the requests. Check out this report: Notice the Failed Request count. What the hey? Is WebAPI failing on roughly 10% of requests when sending JSON? Turns out: No it's not! But it took some sleuthing to figure out why it reports these failures. At first I thought that Web API was failing, and so to make sure I re-ran the test with Fiddler attached and runiisning the ab.exe test by using the -X switch: ab.exe -n100 -c10 -X localhost:8888 http://localhost/aspnetperf/api/HelloWorldJson which showed that indeed all requests where returning proper HTTP 200 results with full content. However ab.exe was reporting the errors. After some closer inspection it turned out that the dates varying in size altered the response length in dynamic output. For example: these two results: {"Id":10,"Name":"Rick","Entered":"2012-09-04T10:57:24.841926-10:00"} {"Id":10,"Name":"Rick","Entered":"2012-09-04T10:57:24.8519262-10:00"} are different in length for the number which results in 68 and 69 bytes respectively. The same URL produces different result lengths which is what ab.exe reports. I didn't notice at first bit the same is happening when running the ASHX handler with JSON.NET result since it uses the same serializer that varies the milliseconds. Moral: You can typically ignore Length failures in Apache Benchmark and when in doubt check the actual output with Fiddler. Note that the other failure values are accurate though. Another interesting Side Note: Perf drops over Time As I was running these tests repeatedly I was finding that performance steadily dropped from a startup peak to a 10-15% lower stable level. IOW, with Web API I'd start out with around 6500 req/sec and in subsequent runs it keeps dropping until it would stabalize somewhere around 5900 req/sec occasionally jumping lower. For these tests this is why I did the IIS RESET and warm up for individual tests. This is a little puzzling. Looking at Process Monitor while the test are running memory very quickly levels out as do handles and threads, on the first test run. Subsequent runs everything stays stable, but the performance starts going downwards. This applies to all the technologies - Handlers, Web Forms, MVC, Web API - curious to see if others test this and see similar results. Doing an IISRESET then resets everything and performance starts off at peak again… Summary As I stated at the outset, these were informal to satiate my curiosity not to prove that any technology is better or even faster than another. While there clearly are differences in performance the differences (other than WCF REST which was by far the slowest and the raw handler which was by far the highest) are relatively minor, so there is no need to feel that any one technology is a runaway standout in raw performance. Choosing a technology is about more than pure performance but also about the adequateness for the job and the easy of implementation. The strengths of each technology will make for any minor performance difference we see in these tests. However, to me it's important to get an occasional reality check and compare where new technologies are heading. Often times old stuff that's been optimized and designed for a time of less horse power can utterly blow the doors off newer tech and simple checks like this let you compare. Luckily we're seeing that much of the new stuff performs well even in V1.0 which is great. To me it was very interesting to see Web API perform relatively badly with plain string content, which originally led me to think that Web API might not be properly optimized just yet. For those that caught my Tweets late last week regarding WebAPI's slow responses was with String content which is in fact considerably slower. Luckily where it counts with serialized JSON and XML WebAPI actually performs better. But I do wonder what would make generic string content slower than serialized code? This stresses another point: Don't take a single test as the final gospel and don't extrapolate out from a single set of tests. Certainly Twitter can make you feel like a fool when you post something immediate that hasn't been fleshed out a little more <blush>. Egg on my face. As a result I ended up screwing around with this for a few hours today to compare different scenarios. Well worth the time… I hope you found this useful, if not for the results, maybe for the process of quickly testing a few requests for performance and charting out a comparison. • JPA thinks I'm deleting a detached object

    - by Steve
So, I've got a DAO that I used to load and save my domain objects using JPA. I finally managed to get the transaction stuff working (with a bunch of help from the folks here...), now I've got another issue. In my test case, I call my DAO to load a domain object with a given id, check that it got loaded and then call the same DAO to delete the object I just loaded. When I do that I get the following: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Removing a detached instance mil.navy.ndms.conops.common.model.impl.jpa.Group#10 at org.hibernate.ejb.event.EJB3DeleteEventListener.performDetachedEntityDeletionCheck(EJB3DeleteEventListener.java:45) at org.hibernate.event.def.DefaultDeleteEventListener.onDelete(DefaultDeleteEventListener.java:108) at org.hibernate.event.def.DefaultDeleteEventListener.onDelete(DefaultDeleteEventListener.java:74) at org.hibernate.impl.SessionImpl.fireDelete(SessionImpl.java:794) at org.hibernate.impl.SessionImpl.delete(SessionImpl.java:772) at org.hibernate.ejb.AbstractEntityManagerImpl.remove(AbstractEntityManagerImpl.java:253) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(NativeMethodAccessorImpl.java:48) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.java:37) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:600) at org.springframework.orm.jpa.SharedEntityManagerCreator$SharedEntityManagerInvocationHandler.invoke(SharedEntityManagerCreator.java:180) at $Proxy27.remove(Unknown Source) at mil.navy.ndms.conops.common.dao.impl.jpa.GroupDao.delete(GroupDao.java:499) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(NativeMethodAccessorImpl.java:48) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.java:37) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:600) at org.springframework.aop.support.AopUtils.invokeJoinpointUsingReflection(AopUtils.java:304) at org.springframework.aop.framework.ReflectiveMethodInvocation.invokeJoinpoint(ReflectiveMethodInvocation.java:182) at org.springframework.aop.framework.ReflectiveMethodInvocation.proceed(ReflectiveMethodInvocation.java:149) at org.springframework.transaction.interceptor.TransactionInterceptor.invoke(TransactionInterceptor.java:106) at org.springframework.aop.framework.ReflectiveMethodInvocation.proceed(ReflectiveMethodInvocation.java:171) at org.springframework.aop.framework.JdkDynamicAopProxy.invoke(JdkDynamicAopProxy.java:204) at $Proxy28.delete(Unknown Source) at mil.navy.ndms.conops.common.dao.impl.jpa.GroupDaoTest.testGroupDaoSave(GroupDaoTest.java:89) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(NativeMethodAccessorImpl.java:48) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.java:37) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:600) at junit.framework.TestCase.runTest(TestCase.java:164) at junit.framework.TestCase.runBare(TestCase.java:130) at junit.framework.TestResult$1.protect(TestResult.java:106) at junit.framework.TestResult.runProtected(TestResult.java:124) at junit.framework.TestResult.run(TestResult.java:109) at junit.framework.TestCase.run(TestCase.java:120) at junit.framework.TestSuite.runTest(TestSuite.java:230) at junit.framework.TestSuite.run(TestSuite.java:225) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.junit3.JUnit3TestReference.run(JUnit3TestReference.java:130) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.TestExecution.run(TestExecution.java:38) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.runTests(RemoteTestRunner.java:460) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.runTests(RemoteTestRunner.java:673) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.run(RemoteTestRunner.java:386) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.main(RemoteTestRunner.java:196) Now given that I'm using the same DAO instance, and I've not changed EntityManagers (unless Spring does so without letting me know), how can this be a detached object? My DAO code looks like this: public class GenericJPADao implements IWebDao, IDao, IDaoUtil { private static Logger logger = Logger.getLogger (GenericJPADao.class); protected Class voClass; @PersistenceContext(unitName = "CONOPS_PU") protected EntityManagerFactory emf; @PersistenceContext(unitName = "CONOPS_PU") protected EntityManager em; public GenericJPADao() { super ( ); ParameterizedType genericSuperclass = (ParameterizedType) getClass ( ).getGenericSuperclass ( ); this.voClass = (Class) genericSuperclass.getActualTypeArguments ( )[1]; } ... public void delete (INTFC modelObj, EntityManager em) { em.remove (modelObj); } @SuppressWarnings("unchecked") public INTFC findById (Long id) { return ((INTFC) em.find (voClass, id)); } } The test case code looks like: IGroup loadedGroup = dao.findById (group.getId ( )); assertNotNull (loadedGroup); assertEquals (group.getId ( ), loadedGroup.getId ( )); dao.delete (loadedGroup); // - This generates the above exception loadedGroup = dao.findById (group.getId ( )); assertNull(loadedGroup); Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here? Thanks

  • Sonar Analysis crashing with default configuration in Maven

    - by Robert Mandeville
I'm starting to experiment with Sonar, and having trouble. I'm running everything on the same Red Hat Linux server, against Java 1.6.10. I launched the server with "bin/linux-x86-32" (the JVM is 32-bit). The sonar.log shows no SEVERE or ERROR and one WARNING, that I'm using the default Derby database (I'll fix that once I get things running at all). I am trying to build a Maven project that builds a JAR. I made no Sonar-specific changes (other than one described below). I can run "mvn clean install" with no problem. However, if I then run "mvn -e sonar:sonar", I get the stacktrace listed below. The server logs no events. I added the dependency "commons-pool:commons-pool:20030825.183949, but to no avail. Any idea as to what I'm doing wrong? [INFO] Error stacktraces are turned on. [INFO] Scanning for projects...
