  • Why can't I copy files from a mac to a samba share?

    I have a share set up on my ubuntu 10.04 box, and the mac can see it, connect to it, and sort of write to it. When I try to copy a whole tree to the share, I get an error saying "The operation cannot be completed because you don't have access to some of the items". If I zip the directory, and copy that over, it succeeds. Any explanation?   • How can I perform a controlled shutdown of a virtualbox guest using VBoxManage?

    I'm currently testing Ubuntu 10.04, and have install the VirtualBox software. I have also installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a VirtualBox guest running on the host system. I've installed the VirtualBox Utils into the guest OS, as follows: sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-utils What I want to be able to do is to initiate a controlled shutdown of the guest, from the host system using the VBoxManage command. I first tried this command: VBoxManage controlvm guest poweroff which worked, but didn't initiate a controlled shutdown, it effectively pulls the plug on the guest. I've since found that this command should do the trick: VBoxManage controlvm guest acpipowerbutton but this doesn't appear to do anything. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? p.s. I don't want to use SSH & Certificates to do this, as I'm also going to be running Windows guests, and I want the solution to work for all guests.

    I have an HP Compaq TC4400 and I recently was able to make most of the Tablet PC functions work in Ubuntu 9.10. (The step-by-step guide can be found in my blog.) Unfortunately I have yet to make the jog dial work. This would be particularly useful for scrolling up and down websites and documents when the TC4400 is in slate mode (with no access to the keyboard). I would be much obliged if anybody could tell me: How to find out the input button/key assignment that Ubuntu 9.10 has for jog-up and jog-down; How to assign jog-up to scroll up (D-pad key UP, or PAGE UP) and jog-down to scroll down (D-Pad key DOWN, or PAGE DOWN). I am using xbindkeys to assign different shortcuts to the quick launch buttons, perhaps I could use the same program for the jog dial? I would have done that, except I do not know how to find the proper button/key assignment for xbindkeys to use. Thanks in advance!

    Hi, I want to bypass certificate checking. I tried using svn --trust-server-cert update, but I get an error, svn: invalid option: --trust-server-cert. I am on ubuntu and the svn version is 1.5.4. Is there any other way to bypass the certificate? Ubuntu won't automatically update my svn to 1.6.xx, which I think has this option. (In any case, I have heard that 1.6.xx has compatibility problems with some apache modules so is not fully safe to install?). Anyone with a suggestion? Thanks JP

  • How to fix Ubuntu 12.04.3 boot to black screen full of errors in white text, after upgrading on dell inspiron 1501

    I am running a Dell Inspiron 1501 I use Linux only. No Microsoft or Apple operating systems (or really anything closed-source). I've only been using Linux for a little over a year but I'm starting to gain a comfortable level of familiarity with the system and terminology. I've been having some issues with Quantel Quetzal and Raring Ringtail, especially with older hardware, so I opted to install Ubuntu 12.04.3 Precise Pangolin on the Inspiron 1501. I checked my MD5 sum after downloading my ISO and all was good. I have in fact used this iso/dvd to install Precise Pangolin successfully on a few other systems (some of which are even older than this laptop). Install goes fine. The wireless card doesn't work out of the box but this is a known issue which is fairly easy to fix. So, first thing I did was open up a terminal and run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade which, part way through, crashed (I assume lightdm and possibly X) and took me to a black screen filled with white lines of text that were either errors or just the ouputs of commands. The reason I say that is because I was unable to gleam any useful information from the output on the screen. I did take a picture however and will post a link. After that, every time I boot the system it goes right to that black screen posting all the error messages or output in white text. I never get a purple Ubuntu splash, so from what I can tell after reading this wiki article: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen That means that after the kernel is selected, it is unable to correctly implement the settings it needs. If the purple splash never shows, the frame buffer was never set correctly right? This leads me to believe that it could be a kernel issue? The wiki suggested to try and pinpoint the issue by rolling back kernels until I find one that works. Is this my best option? I think I'm going to give it a try anyways and will let everyone know if I am able to solve the issue this way. I have since done a few reinstalls and some trouble-shooting including a couple hours scouring the net for anyone with any kind of similar issue. Most of the issues I could find involved getting a black screen after login and none of them said anything about any information output on this black screen. My reinstalls have taught me that there is no issue updating, but as soon as I run sudo apt-get upgrade my system goes to the black screen and every time I boot it up it does the same thing. The only way to fix is by reinstall. I never get any ability to log in. After a hard power off to the laptop (because I cannot use ctrl+alt+del to reboot) when it boots again it goes to the grub boot menu and I can select between regular boot, recovery mode and the two memtest options. I never tried the memtest options but the other two both lead to the same black screen. Some people having a black/blank screen issue claim to have fixed it by using 12.10 or 13.04 but I believe they were having a different issue where they got a black/blank screen after logging in. I think I will still give these images a try, but mostly figured I would just wait another day or two for 13.10. Other things I figured I would try from the following three articles: After logging in, there's a black screen and my cursor, nothing else! in Ubuntu 12.10 Black Screen on Login After Upgrading to 12.04 I can't get to the login screen include opening a terminal using ctrl+alt+f1 and trying a variety of reseting unity, x settings, lightdm (or switching to gdm); but I doubt this will work or that I will even be able to access a terminal. I'm pretty sure the whole system is stuck after it loads the last line on the black screen. I will try these things and post more information when I have. Hopefully someone has an idea in the meantime and I will keep checking back trying to find a solution. Thank you. Here are 3 different pictures of the error message.     I have got a machine with dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10, and I wanted to add another OS to that (Jolicloud), so I started the partition manager in Windows and shrunk the Windows partition by about 10 GB (so now I have:Windows;currently empty 10GB;Ubuntu). I shutted down the computer because I was finished. Now when I started my machine again it says error:no such partition. grub rescue> and I can type commands. ls gives (hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos4) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (fd0) if that helps

In windows I either keep getting "the semaphore timeout period has expired" or "an unexpected error has occured". Does ubuntu need some special magic to allow windows 7 to mount an nfs share?   • Upgrading Ubuntu(32 bit) 10.10 -> 11.04 fails and causes a kernel panic on boot

    On Ubuntu 10.10 machine Upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 using the update manager. The upgrade fails and leaves the system in an unstable state. When I reboot the system I get a kernel panic on boot. The error points to /opt/abc/runtime/lib/libc.so.6. By researching on this I found that there is a third party software abc causes problem. It has it's own runtime(libc) library. In /lib/ directory there is a link file /lib/ld-abc.so.2 ---/opt/abc/runtime/lib/ld-linux.so.2. If we rename this file to /lib/abc.so.2 or remove this file the the upgrade is success. Here is the upgrade log of where it crashes(apt-term.log) ===== Services restarted successfully. Processing triggers for libc-bin ... ldconfig deferred processing now taking place /usr/bin/dpkg: /opt/abc/runtime/lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.11' not found (required by /usr/bin/dpkg) /usr/bin/dpkg: /opt/abc/runtime/lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.8' not found (required by /lib/libselinux.so.1) ===== Could you please let me know what would be the problem of having a run time link library file in /lib directory.     I have a laptop with the following specs: 2.2gHz dual-core processor. 4gb of DDR2 Ram. 180gb HDD space. I have tried everything. I have reinstalled the OS. Installed Ubuntu with Lubuntu, LXDE, Gnome Classic, Unity 2D desktop. I have even tried downgrading to XP with all non-critical processes and services turned off. Even with the most stripped down version of Ubuntu it heats up and the fan starts churning. I'm out of ideas. I have tried everything. If you have any tips, please help. :'(

  • nokia cell phone not accepting IP from dnsmasq dhcp server

    Hello, I having problem connecting a NOkia cell phone to my home wifi network. The wifi network is provided by a wireless card in a machine running Debian Testing and 2.6.26-2-686 kernel. The cars is D-Link DWL-G520 working in ap mode and has WPA encryption enabled. The wireless network is provided by hostapd using madwifi driver. Windows and Mac machines work properly with this wifi network. If I switch off dnsmasq dhcp queries logging, i.e. if I decrease the verbosity of the log, all I see are two lines of DHCPDISCOVER(ath0) and DHCPOFFER(ath0) repeatedly in the log with no acceptance by the cell phone. It appears as though the phone is not accepting the dhcp offer. However, if I give the phone a static IP address in its configuration, it works properly on the wifi network. So it appears as though the problem is dhcp related. Hints? Suggestions?   • MySQL can't access root account or reset with mysqladmin

    So if I type mysql -u root I'm supposedly logged in, however upon trying to create or access a database I get this lovely error: ERROR 1044 (42000): Access denied for user ''@'localhost' to database 'test1'. I haven't the foggiest idea why after logging in as root it's trying access DB's as ''@'localhost' and it's driving me a bit crazy right now. Possibly related, when I try to set the root password I get the error mysqladmin: Can't turn off logging; error: 'Access denied; you need (at least one of) the SUPER privilege(s) for this operation'. I've tried removing mysql-server via running apt-get purge mysql-server and then reinstalling with no luck. This is running Ubuntu Server 12.10 64-bit and mysql is indeed running. --Edit-- I wonder if perhaps there is no root user. So I try to start MySQL with --skip-grant-tables and the create the root user but then I'm given this: ERROR 1290 (HY000): The MySQL server is running with the --skip-grant-tables option so it cannot execute this statement. Fun fun fun fun fun.

    Ok so i have a DECIMAL field called "Score". (e.g 10.00) Now, in my SP, i want to increment/decrement the value of this field in update transactions. So i might want to do this: SET @NewScore = @CurrentScore + @Points Where @Points is the value im going to increment/decrement. Now lets say @Points = 10.00. In a certain scenario, i want 10.00 to become -10.00 So the statement would be translated to: SET @NewScore = @CurrentScore + -10.00 How can i do that? I know its a strange question, but basically i want that statement to be dynamic, in that i dont want to have a different statement for incrementing/decrementing the value. I just want something like this: SET @Points = 10.00 IF @ActivityBeingPerformedIsFoo BEGIN -- SET @Points to be equivalent negative value, (e.g -10.00) END SET @NewScore = @CurrentScore + @Points
