• Exchange 2010 outlook anywhere - shows internal URL

  I am setting up an Exchange 2010 SP2 for a customer. However, the server address that the server returns with autodiscover is wrong, as it points to the internal domain (.local) - and not the external address. How do I change this? Here's an image to describe what I mean: It is the upper field that is wrong. I dont want users to enable the RPC over HTTP-thing, as the users know barely nothing about computers.   This is a strange one...I have a customer for whom background colors don't show up in either Firefox or IE. For example, check out msn.com. See how theres a blue background? For my client, that background shows as white. Any thoughts? I couldn't find any settings to affect this issue.

• Disable logon protection for Rising Antivirus

  Hi, i am using Rising Antivirus, free version. It has many advanced functionalities, including a "logon protection" that assures the protection of the password, or pre-logon protection. Unfortunately, that disables remote desktop connection until an user has logged on. (user log on, disconnect, then you can connect) I hate this behaviour, someone knows how to disable this function? (ok, i could create a limited user that autologons and then autodisconnects, but i don't like this approach)

• Is there a middle ground in monthly server costs?

  Right now I'm paying a monthly fee of 12.95 for a server and I'm definitely getting what I pay for! (no customer support, outages, slowdowns, glitches, etc) I know that the good companies (Rackspace) charge much more. (Hundreds a month) I'm wondering if there is a middle ground somewhere that might be as good as Rackspace but is still better than what I have. 50 a month maybe? If it does exist will the extra $40 a month be worth it?

• How to stop access to file while it is being uploded by FTP on Windows server 2008

  I'm using FTP 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2. When I upload a file and it is partially uploaded I'm able to move it before it has completed. Is there a way to stop this? I see an option under Advanced settings-Behaviour-File Handling-Allow reading files while uploading but this doesn't seem to do the trick. I guess it's write access that I need to stop. It seemed to have this functionality by default on IIS6.

• 550 relay not permitted

  We are using Fogbugz on our server to do customer support emails. Occasionally we get errors coming back when sending emails which say: 550 relay not permitted This seems to happen at random though, sometimes sending an email to a person works, next time to the same person it'll bounce back. I've tried setting up reverse DNS with the server host and creating the SPF record in GoDaddy but we still get some of these errors. Is there anything else I can do, and is there a way of testing these are actually configured correctly?

• What part of SMF is likely broken by a hard power down?

  At one of my customer sites, the local guy shut down their local Solaris 10 x86 server, pulled the power inputs, moved it, and now it won’t start properly. It boots and then presents a prompt which lets you log in. This appears to be single user milestone (or equivalent). Digging into it, I think that SMF isn’t permitting the system to go multi-user. SMF was generating a ton of errors on autofs, after some fooling with it I got it to generate errors on inetd and nfs/client instead. This all tells me that the problem is in some SMF state file or database that needs to be fixed/deleted/recreated or something, but I don’t know what the actual issue is. By “generate errors”, I mean that every second I get a message on the console saying “Method or service exit timed out. Killing contract <#.” This makes interacting with the computer difficult. Running svcs –xv shows the service as “enabled”, in state “disabled”, reason “Start method is running”. Fooling with svcadm on the service does nothing, except confirm that the service is not in a Maintenance state. Logs in /lib/svc/log/$SERVICE just tell you that this loop has been happening once per second. Logs in /etc/svc/volatile/$SERVICE confirm that at boot the service is attempted to start, and immediately stopped, no further entries. Note that system-log isn’t starting because system-log depends on autofs so I have no syslog or dmesg. Googling all these terms ends up telling me how to debug/fix either autofs or nfs/client or inetd or rpc/gss (which was the dependency that SMF was using as an excuse to prevent nfs/client from “starting”, it was claiming that rpc/gss was “undefined” which is incorrect since this all used to work. I re-enabled it with inetadm, but inetd still won’t start properly). But I think that the problem is SMF in general, not the individual services. Doing a restore_repository to the “manifest_import” does nothing to improve, or even detectibly change, the situation. I didn’t use a boot backup because the last boot(s) were not useful. I have told the customer that since the valuable data directories are on a separate file system (which fsck’s as clean so it is intact) we could just re-install solaris 10 on the / partition. But that seems like an awfully windows-like solution to inflict on this problem. So. Any ideas what piece is broken and how I might fix it?

  I know in TextMate I can go to preferences - advanced - folder references and play with the regex pattern to remove certain types of files and folders by default. I heard that if you have an existing project, however, and chance these, the project is not affected. From a similar but different angle, I am interested to know if I can exclude certain types of files, say anything named "index.html" from an existing project while not changing the global scope. • Is this common practice for disk quotas on virtual dedicated servers?

  Hello, I was a bit surprised when I purchased a VPS with 15GB of storage to find that am left with very little space after Windows' 13GB footprint. I can't even install SQL Server. Tech support is saying this is normal. I know that if they felt like it they could remove Windows from the quota or adjust it accordingly. Is this a common practice or should I further pursue the issue with customer service?

  Hi, Because I am using one of the new WD disks I am trying to aling my root partition with the real sectors, as described here: http://community.wdc.com/t5/Desktop/Problem-with-WD-Advanced-Format-drive-in-LINUX-WD15EARS/m-p/10920#M631 So I copied all files to a temp location, deleted my partition (/dev/sda3), recreated it a few cylinders later (same name) and copied the files to the newly created partition. But now when I try to boot, I get my old grub menu but after selecting my kernel version it hangs... Any idea how I can fix it?

• Windows 7 Aero Theme when on Battery

  Windows 7 has the full and basic aero themes that can be changed inside personalization. Windows used to automatically disable Windows Aero (transparency) when I unplug my laptop from the mains. I reset the theme and now it doesn't do this anymore. I can't seem to find how to enable this again. I've checked the advanced power options and control panel but turning back on this feature is eluding me. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  Windows 2008 R2, standard. No firewall locally on it. Newly setup because an old SQL2000 had two disks die (or could it be the raid controller?) at the same time. Luckily, I had fresh backups. • windows xp mode for windows 7 - save text input language settings

  When I change the 'default language' in 'text services and input languages' in windows xp mode from EN-US to DE-DE the settings are reverted with the next logoff / reboot - EN-US is the default language again. Is there a way around this behaviour? I'm using the default 'XPMUser' in windows xp mode. I also checked 'turn off advanced text services' and disabled the language bar and windows xp remembers these settings - just not the default language..

• SQL Server 2008 - Error starting service - model.mdf not found?!

  my SQL server 2008 was running fine. About an hour ago, it suddenly stopped - the MSSQLSERVER service had stopped I right clicked, clicked start, and it said the service had started, and stopped I looked in the event log and saw these two errors: 17207 : udopen: Operating system error 3(error not found) during the creation/opening of physical device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf. 17204 : FCB::Open failed: Could not open device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf for virtual device number (VDN) 1. The model.mdf db has NEVER been in that location - i specified drive F: to use for data / log during install. I checked the SQL Configuration Manager, to try and set startup params, but SQL Server is not listed as one of the services..... EDIT: I've now moved the db to where it was looking for: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\ directory. Now if I start the service, it still does not work - i get this error message in the log: Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 3, object ID 1, index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes. Interestingly, i checked the error log - around the time users reported problems, there is this: 2010-01-08 17:11:26.44 spid51 Configuration option 'show advanced options' changed from 0 to 1. • Can you create ACLs with open vSwitch on XenServer 5.6FP1 without using the DVS appliance?

  I have a pool of XenServer hosts running the Free version of XenServer 5.6 FP1. I was wondering if I change the network backend to use Open vSwitch if I can specify ACLs on individual network VIFs without needing to use the DVS appliance (distributed virtual switch) which requires an Advanced License or higher. Basically I'm looking for a way to isolate VMs on my network so that if a user had root access on the command line they couldn't access other servers they should not be able to (without using a VLAN).

• whois returns correct changed date but wrong nameservers

  I was just told by 1&1 customer support that "the date in the whois could show correctly while the nameservers information being the old one" I though the whole document was stamped at once, not "built" from different data sources. Am I being lied to? or how is that possible? The site is not visible yet, the whois shows correct date the change was made, and the nameservers are still wrong in that report/record/document and of course in the world's dns servers.

The built-in ACL editor (Advanced Security Settings dialog) is adequate, but its limitations are frustrating, particularly that it cannot be resized and you cannot look at the list of existing entries at the same time as you are adding a new entry. Is there an improved ACL editor that can be downloaded to supplement the default one?

  I wonder, if there are any faster builds of zlib around with more advanced optimizations? If it's possible to optimize it using SSE instructions or Intel C++ compiller, or some trick which were patented earlier (I know patents were a serious limitation during gzip/zlib development), have anyone bothered to implement that? I am especially interested in compression speed, which have a direct impact on high-performance web-services serving static & dynamic content.
