• Which repo and version of Percona for Natty?

  I'm wanting to drop in Percona instead of MySQL (5.1) on my Natty ubuntu server. I've added the keys and the repos. I've added a natty repo, even though it's not supposed to exist and it seems to be fine. The problem is when I go an apt-get install percona-server-server, it tells me that it depends on percona-server-server-5.5 and won't be installed. Should I just install 5.5 (over the top of mysql 5.1) or do I need to install percona 5.1? Or do I need to pick a different repo and let it decide?

• Why not install Msvcr71.dll into system32?

  While looking for an authoritative source for the missing Msvcr71.dll that is needed by a few old applications, I stumbled across the MSDN article Redistribution of the shared C runtime component in Visual C++. The advice given to developers is to drop the DLL into the application's directory instead of system32 since DLLs in this directory are considered before the system paths. What can/will go wrong if I (as an administrator, not a developer) decide to take the lazy path and install Msvcr71.dll (and Msvcp71.dll while I'm at it) into the system32 directory (of 32 bit Windows XP or Windows 7 systems) instead of putting a copy in each application's directory? Is there another good solution to provide the applications with the needed DLLs that doesn't involve copying stuff to the application directories? added after first answers: I understand that incompatible API changes may have been made to the mentioned DLLs, but pretty much every mention of incompatibilities I have found using Google had to do with games or video codecs. Right now, I expect that the risk of breakage is pretty small. Am I missing something?

• Setting Screen Resolution for Extended Display on Windows 8

  I'm using a Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 8 Developers Preview. I've connected a second screen (some Dell 22 inch one) and have been using it with 'Extend these displays' options in the Screen Resolution settings. It use to be all fine but yesterday I changed my VGA cable to the 2nd monitor and since then the resolution of the 2nd monitor is not setting properly. Earlier, while auto detecting the monitor, the right resolution use to appear but now, as you can see from the attached image, none of the resolution in the drop down fits with the right proportion. So how do I set the right screen resolution. (I think the right one is 1680 x 1050 which is not there in the list)

  Im trying to keep away some attackers that try to exploit XSS vulnerabilities from my website, I have found that most of the malicious attempts start with a classic "alert(document.cookie);\" test. The site is not vulnerable to XSS but I want to block the offending IP addresses before they found a real vulnerability, also, to keep the logs clean. My first thought is to have a script constantly checking in the Apache logs all IP addresses that start with that probe and send those addresses to an iptables drop rule. With something like this: cat /var/log/httpd/-access_log | grep "alert(document.cookie);" | awk '{print $1}' | uniq Why would be an effective way to send the output of that command to iptables?   Hey Guys ! Well, i have 2 problems .. not exactly problems, but one is a question, and the other is a problem . QUESTION I have installed gVim on my laptop and now i want to install plugins and customize my vimrc . Where is the 'plugin' , 'color' , 'docs' directory located in order for me to drop those files in ? And where do i need to put the .vimrc file for gVim to be able to recogonize it ? PROBLEM Sound isn't working. I dont know whats the problem @ all. It just doesnt play . And NO its not on mute. i Checked. If any other input is required from the terminal , please ask for it. I've got another function that checks whether a point is inside a polygon. My goal is to combine the two functions, so that I can check whether the latitude and longitude points pulled from the db are inside a specific area. • SQUID Transparent SSL proxy (no intercept)

  I know how to have squid work as a transparent proxy. You put it into transparent mode then use your router or IPTABLES to forward port 80 to the squid port. I would like to do the same for SSL. Every guide I see mentions setting up keys on the squid server. I do not want squid to actually decrypt the SSL traffic then establish a connection with the server, rather I would like squid to simply forward the SSL traffic as is. The only thing I would like to do is be able to check the SSL request for any offending IPs and drop the packets if the destination is one of them.

• Why does Snow Leopard report incorrect battery levels for Bluetooth input devices after switching them to Apple rechargeable batteries?

  I have a Magic Trackpad, Magic Mouse and the Apple Wireless keyboard. They work fine. Two days ago, doing my part for the environment, I changed all their batteries to Apple rechargeable batteries. Today I noticed that the battery level meter for all three devices report the wrong battery level. The trackpad reports 93% charge, the keyboard 75% charge and the mouse 65% charge. This can't be right; these are fully charged new batteries. They can't possible drop that much within 48 hours. Has anyone else encountered this problem? And are there any solutions?

• Outlook 2007 Script that sends new form email when a message is dragged and dropped into a folder

  Is it possible to write a script that will allow Outlook to automatically send out a new email to a distribution list when you drag and drop and previously opened email into a specified folder? The rules only let you apply them to received and sent messages. They do not allow you to apply it to anything that is dragged and dropped after being opened. It baffles me that Novell Groupwise had this functionality but Outlook 2007 does not. If someone can assist me in writing a script/macro to provided this functionality, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  Just installed Windows Server 2008R2 SP1 to see if it would fix this problem, but it didn't. Until an administrator logs onto the domain controller, there are many events that WFP blocked a connection from Server60 to Server60 or Server60 to Server70. Both server60 and server70 are the domain controllers. One the admin logs on, the WFP events stop. The firewall is off by default GPO. Yes, i know that the WFP kicks in during the boot up sequence until the firewall takes over or in my case does not take over (since Vista), but i clearly should not have to autologon to a domain controller and call autolock or something. • Can Robocopy be made to skip open files?

  We are using Robocopy to redistribute files which arrive via FTP in a drop folder. Ideally we want Robocopy to leave files alone if they are still being FTPd. Having tried various switches, Robocopy still copies the open files. It doesn't delete them, so the FTP continues unaffected. However, we end up with truncated files being distributed to their destination. Can Robocopy be made to skip open files? Perhaps there is something more suitable than Robocopy for this task?

• Permission issue when deleting folders

  I can't delete some folders and some actions are being denied because I do not have administrator access. But in my user account it says i am an administrator. I also just upgraded from Windows Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit, but I had this problem before upgrading, but now I am being denied more things. I also can't reorder the way files are sorted in folders. I can sort them through the default means, but I literally can't drag and drop them if I want to reorder them. I don't know if this is another problem or if it is related. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks!

  One of my clients is hooked on multi-column substring matching. I understand that Contains and FreeText search for words (and at least in the case of Contains, word prefixes). However, based upon my understanding of this MSDN book, neither of these nor their variants are capable of searching substrings. I have used LIKE rather extensively (Select * from A where A.B Like '%substr%') Sample table A: ID | Col1 | Col2 | Col3 | ------------------------------------- 1 | oklahoma | colorado | Utah | 2 | arkansas | colorado | oklahoma | 3 | florida | michigan | florida | ------------------------------------- The following code will give us row 1 and row 2: select * from A where Col1 like '%klah%' or Col2 like '%klah%' or Col3 like '%klah%' This is rather ugly, probably slow, and I just don't like it very much. Probably because the implementations that I'm dealing with have 10+ columns that need searched. The following may be a slight improvement as code readability goes, but as far as performance, we're still in the same ball park. select * from A where (Col1 + ' ' + Col2 + ' ' + Col3) like '%klah%' I have thought about simply adding insert, update, and delete triggers that simply add the concatenated version of the above columns into a separate table that shadows this table. Sample Shadow_Table: ID | searchtext | --------------------------------- 1 | oklahoma colorado Utah | 2 | arkansas colorado oklahoma | 3 | florida michigan florida | --------------------------------- This would allow us to perform the following query to search for '%klah%' select * from Shadow_Table where searchtext like '%klah%' I really don't like having to remember that this shadow table exists and that I'm supposed to use it when I am performing multi-column substring matching, but it probably yields pretty quick reads at the expense of write and storage space. My gut feeling tells me there there is an existing solution built into SQL Server 2008. However, I don't seem to be able to find anything other than research papers on the subject. Any help would be appreciated.

• IP-restricted port forwarding with iptables

  For an example, I have two authorized client computers, 1.1.1.1 and 2.1.1.1. My server running iptables is 3.1.1.1 and my firewalled web server is 4.1.1.1. When one of the authorized client IPs connects to 3.1.1.1 on port 80, I would like the connection to be forwarded to 4.1.1.1 on port 8888. If any other IP attempts to connect I would like it to refuse/drop the connection. What iptables config would accomplish this? Is there something more specific out there that would be better suited for this job?

• How do I fix this error? Windows server 2003 the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022)

  Opening one of the programs from the user desktop I get the above Aplication error. It is a proram stored on the server and then the icon put on the users desktop (this is how I was told to do it) but it does not run the application. I don't know anything about group policies etc and can just about manage to add users in the active directory and that is it. We just have a folder which we drop the program icons into. Any ideas? I must be doing something wrong as it doesn't always show up on their desktop either. What is the simplest way to do this? Thanks

• Outlook keeps dropping 'Other Calendars'

  We run Exchnage 2010 with Outlook 2007, and we have public calendars that users are able to 'Add to favorites...' - these are then shown under 'Other Calendars' when a user clicks their 'Calendar' tab. The issue we are having is that these calendars drop off every now and again. Looking under 'Public Folders - Favorites', I can see that the calendars are there, but Outlook doesn't seem to know that they are calendars any more. Simply clicking on one of them to open it changes the icon to that of a 'Folder containing calendar items' for each of the favorite items, and closing and reopening Outlook gets them back under 'Other Calendars' My question is this - how can I make Outlook stop forgetting that these public folders are calendars? • Syncronization inside the same PC

  Hi, I work in a company without a server and operating in diferent countries. Because of this we work on a virtual office basis and share files through a virtual server called Drop Box. I'm the controller of this virtual server and find it to be incomplete. We work on levels of permission so I invite access to users for 3 possible levels and find sometimes that I need to have a specific folder inside one mother folder to be inside 2 levels. The only way I can find to make my life easier is to automatically syncronize specific folders between diferent mother folders, but I don't know how to do this in windows 7. Can anyone give me a hint? Thanks

  Hello, With the availability of compact USB memory sticks with much, MUCH higher storage capacities is there still any use-case for taking periodic, incremental backups on DVD/RWs? The DVD/RW has an additional annoyance that you cannot drag and drop files to it as easily as you can on a USB memory stick. So, if I have a 4.7GB DVD/RW, I must re-burn the whole image every time I backup new stuff... with possibly rearranged file/folder structure. Secondly, why in this day and age you cannot install a file-system (like ext3 or FAT32) on a DVD/RW... and likewise on CD/RW's as you can on a USB memory stick? Many thanks, /HS

• Certain sites not working in Firefox, working in IE

  Totally weird thing happening on my PC after I came back from the Holiday shutdown. My homepage by default is google.com/ig but when it opens (in Firefox) the G-Mail panel does not display and eventually times out. I then try to navigate to https://www.gmail.com but that also times out. Thinking maybe work decided to drop the ban-hammer on g-mail I decided to try it in Internet Explorer. Oddly enough it works in IE Any idea on why it works fine in one browser but not the other?

• Forgot to unmount/eject external hard drive, lost moved files. Mac OS X

  So I was using my Mac with my external hard drive connected via USB. I moved about 10 GB of data to it (via drag and drop while holding down the Command key to move the files rather than to copy them). They moved to the drive all right, but as I was having some issues and the Finder crashed after the transfer, I was unable to eject the volume and later everything froze so I had to do a hard restart (hold the power button). When I remounted the volume (plugged the external hard drive back in) it no longer had any of the files which I moved onto it. As it was a lot of data, how can I recover these files?

  From inside Vi/Vim, I can type: :shell to drop into a shell. Is there any way to detect that I am in a Vi-spawned subshell? The environmental variable SHLVL is 2, but that does not tell me explicitly that I am in a Vi/Vim-spawned subshell. On OS X, the following variables are also set: MYVIMRC, VIMRUNTIME, VIM. How universal are these? Can I count on these being set in any system, if and only if I am in a Vi/Vim subshell? If not, is there any portable, robust and hopefully efficient way to tell that I am in a Vi/Vim subshell? Thanks.
