• Grails or Play! for an ex-RoR developer ?

  Hello, I plan to begin learning a Java web framework (I love the Java API), I already used Rails and Django. I want something close to Java, but without all the complexity of J2EE. I've found 2 framework that could be good for me : Grails : Grails looks great, it use Groovy that is better than Java for web application (I think..), but it's slower, that use pure-java components (Hibernate, Strut, Spring), it looks pretty simple to deploy (send .war and it's ok !), the GSP is great ! It's a bit harder to debug (need to restart the server at each modification, and the stacktrace is a mix of Java and Groovy stack that is not always understandable..) Play! : This framework also looks great, it's faster than Grails (It's use directly Java), but I don't really like how it use Java, it modify the source code to transform the properties call as setXXX/getXXX, I'm not kind of that... The framework also have caching function that Grails don't (alreary) has. I don't really like the Template Engine. It's also easer to debug (no need to restart the server, and the stacktrace is clear) What do you recommend for ? I am looking for something easy to learn (I used a lot ruby and java, but a little bit java (But I love the Java API)), that is full featured (That's no a problem with all the Java Library availables, but if it's bundle and integrated I prefer), that scale and that is not too slow (faster than ruby), and if possible I would want something with a decent community to easily find support and answer to my questions ;) PS: No JRuby on Rails Thank you !

• Really annoying bug with Topmost property in Windows Forms

  Hi, I have this Windows Forms application where it sits in the notification area. Clicking on the icon brings it up front, clicking it again (or clicking on the app X icon) sends it back. This is the type of app that having the window always on top is important when it's displayed by clicking the icon, but it's optional. Right-clicking the icon brings up a context menu where one can select to enable the "always on top" option or not. When the application first starts up, the app settings are read from an XML file and I'm 99% that this is working as it should, the Topmost properly is properly read (and written). After some time (minutes, hours, days, whatever, I normally hibernate and rarely shutdown) the Topmost stops working. I don't change the option, I don't think anything is changing the option but I click the notification area icon and app is not brought up front. It shows up (it displays on Alt+Tab) but it's on the background, it's not topmost as it should. I bring up the context menu, disable the option (cause it's enabled) and enable it back and it starts to work after that. The app is now topmost. However, it can lose this ability anytime after while. I can't understand why this happens and how this happens. Does anyone have any idea why? If not, any idea how could I try to debug such behavior?

• What's the best way to learn .NET?

  I've been developing Java EE for quite a while now. I've used WebLogic, Tomcat, Spring, and Hibernate extensively, so I have a mental model of what features are available and how things are developed and deployed. The problem that I have with .NET is that I don't have a clear mapping of its features onto Java EE. Here's what I know so far: Java EE - .NET Java - C# JAR - DLL WAR - ? (deployment in general) EAR - ? (deployment in general) Tomcat - IIS web server JSP - ASP? JDBC - ODBC JMS - MSMQ JTA - Microsoft Transaction Manager So much of the functionality that WebLogic handles appears to be dispersed throughout the Windows OS. My confusion kicks in when I see the waves of books at Borders - VB.NET, ASP.NET, C#, etc. If I'm not a VB programmer, would it be possible to stick with C# and write enterprise apps that are the equivalent of what I'm used to with Java EE? If there were a Top Three list of books to learn from, what would they be? • Please recommend a CMS framework in Java good for making a monitoring system

  I already have Java code to display and process data from a database. I would now like to implement the code as modules, and incorporate as a whole into a CMS system. The CMS MUST support Spring, Hibernate, etc. The CMS MUST not be GPL, and preferably open source (lGPL, BSD,etc). The CMS MUST have good documentation and support The CMS MUST be secure (safe from XSS and injection) and support different levels of authorizations, (built-in or module) The CMS MUST have good navigation and tab, (built-in or module) +1, for having a good ajax paginated table module to display data +1, for using ajax to change pages with support for bookmarks and history.back() +1, for using jquery or prototype +1, for being easy to deploy, and easy to add modules +1, for supporting dynamically add/remove and drag-dropping of modules Please recommend a CMS best for the job. • Help for Platform plus Plugin development by J2ee

  Hi, everybody. I want to develop a monitor platform which can monitor many different subjects such as database, OS, middle ware etc. The system includes two parts: 1. Report center(Show some useful chart and report) 2. Collector(Collect information from monitored subject) For the time being, I just want to monitor some parameters of oracle and Linux. And I will add more monitor subject like MS SqlServer, IBM Db2 ect. later. I need a good architecture so I can easily add new monitor module and not to disturb original framework too much. I want to develop it by the method of “Platform + plugin”. A plugin should have its own UI, setting part and something else. I plan to use struts2 + spring + hibernate to develop report center. I am not very sure how to do design this architecture for I have any “Platform + plugin” experience. I ever googled some information such as OSGI and Portlet. I am not sure which one should be my best choice. Can anyone give me some instruction about it. Your help will be appreciated.

• Using JSF, PrimeFaces and JPA: Create Basic WebApp without using Generated CRUD Classes, Forms, etc

  I am trying to build a basic CRUD application with NetBeans 7.4, JSF, PrimeFaces and JPA using MySQL. I have successfully done this by using the NetBeans wizards. I want to do this from scratch, no wizards. There seems to be a lack of support for the combo of JSF, PrimeFaces and JPA. When I say "lack", I mean a full example (I might be asking too much), without using the CRUD auto-gen templates/classes AND shows actual queries coded and passed to the datatables(primefaces). YouTube is full of non-English speaking examples using Hibernate (not JPA) and other examples that show flashy GUI's with no code. So far I understand you need an @Entity class (provides the physical build of the tables), a Controller (serializable) and the .xhtml web page to show the datatable.. what else? Also, I'm not seeing any posts or examples where queries are using with JPA/JSF and how they are tied together (in one place). I need to connect the dots here so that I can leverage JSF/JPA to create simple queries to populate my PF DataTables. I've read the blogs and I've googled the intranets until I'm blue in the face. Sending me a list of URL's to read to learn about each product is something I've already done. I get what they do independently, but am looking for the "How do they all connect" answer with maybe some basic code examples!! :)

  What's the best way to implement an IDataProvider and a LoadableDetachable in Wicket for an indexed list? Suppose I have a Customer who has a list of Adresses. class Customer { List adresses; } Now I want to implement a data provider/ldm for the adresses of a customer. I suppose the usual way is an IDataProvider as an inner class which refers to the customer model of the component, like: class AdressDataProvider implements IDataProvider { public Iterator iterator() { Customer c = (Customer)Component.this.getModel(); // somehow get the customer model return c.getAdresses().iterator(); } public IModel model(Object o) { Adress a = (Adress) o; // Return an LDM which loads the adress by id. return new AdressLoadableDetachableModel(a.getId()); } } Question: How would I implement this, when the adress does not have an ID (e.g. it's a Hibernate Embeddable/CollectionOfElements) but can only be identified by its index in the customer.adresses list? How do I keep reference to the owning entity and the index? In fact, I know a solution, but I wonder if there's a common pattern to do this.

• Multi-module maven build : different result from parent and from module

Typically if I build PImport only, the generated war is similar to what I had with my ant build and if I build from the parent pom, my war took 20MB, a lot of dependencies from other modules had been added. Both wars are running well. My project PWebService has unit tests to be executed during the build. It is using mock-ejb which has cglib as dependency. Having a problem of ClassNotFound with this one, I had to exclude it and add a dependency to cglib-nodep (see last pom extract). If I then build only this module, it is working well. But if I build from the parent project, it fails because other dependencies in other modules also had an implicit dependency on cglib. I had to exclude it in every modules pom and add the dependency to cglib-nodep everywhere to make it run. Do I miss something important in my configuration ? • Java EE Website Planning Questions

  I'm a .NET programming who is soon moving to the Java EE world. I have plenty of experience with .NET web technologies, web services, WebForms and MVC. I am also very familiar with the Java language, and have written a few servlets and modified a couple of JSP pages, but I haven't touched EE yet. I'd like to set up a public website using Java EE so I can familiarize myself with whats current. I'm thinking just a technology playground at this point with no particular purpose in mind. What Java technologies are the current hotness for this sort of thing? (For example, if someone asked me what I'd recommend learning to set up a new .NET site, I'd say use ASP MVC instead of WebForms and recommend LINQ-to-SQL as a quick, simple and widely used ORM.) So, what I'd like to know is: Is there a recommended technology for the presentation layer? Is JSP considered a good approach, or is there anything cleaner/newer/more widespread? Is Hibernate still widely used for persistence? Is it obsolete? Is there anything better out there? (I've worked with NHibernate some, so I wouldn't be starting from scratch.) Is cheap Java EE web hosting available? What should I know being a .NET web developer moving to the Java world?

• What are the advantages of using J2EE over ASP.net?

  We are currently planning to launch a couple of internal web projects in the future. Our company's dev teams are mostly experienced in J2EE and have worked with it for years. Today, we have the choice of launching a couple of our projects on .net. I have checked out a couple of sources on the net, and it seems like the "J2EE vs ASP.net" combat brings out as much discord as the overseen "Apple vs Microsoft" or "Free Eclipse vs Visual Studio"... Nevertheless, I have been somewhat quite impressed with ASP.net's abilities to create great things with huge simplicity (for ex. asp.net ajax's demos). No more tons of xmls to play with, no more tons of frameworks to configure (we usually use the famous combo struts/spring/hibernate)... It just seemed to me that ASP.net had some good advantages over J2EE, but then again, I may speak by ignorance. What I want to know is this : What are the real advantages of using J2EE over ASP.net? Is there anything that cannot be done in ASP.net that can be done in J2EE? Once the frameworks are all in place and configured, is it faster to develop apps in J2EE than it is in .net? Are the applications generally easier to maintain in J2EE than in ASP.net? Is it worth it for some developpers to leave their J2EE knowledge on the side and move on to ASP.net if it does exactly the same thing?

• Is the REST support in Spring 3's MVC Framework production quality yet?

  Hi all, Since Spring 3 was released in December last year, I have been trying out the new REST features in the MVC framework for a small commercial project involving implementing a few RESTful Web Services which consume XML and return XML views using JiBX. I plan to use either Hibernate or JDBC Templates for the data persistence. As a Spring 2.0 developer, I have found Spring 3's (and 2.5's) new annotations way of doing things quite a paradigm shift and have personally found some of the new MVC annotation features difficult to get up to speed with for non-trivial applications - as such, I am often having to dig for information in forums and blogs that is not apparent from going through the reference guide or from the various Spring 3 REST examples on the web. For deadline-driven production quality and mission critical applications implementing a RESTful architecture, should I be holding off from Spring 3 and rather be using mature JSR 311 (JAX-RS) compliant frameworks like RESTlet or Jersey for the REST layer of my code (together with Spring 2 / 2.5 to tie things together)? I had no problems using RESTlet 1.x in a previous project and it was quite easy to get up to speed with (no magic tricks behind the scenes), but when starting my current project it initially looked like the new REST stuff in Spring 3's MVC Framework would make life easier. Do any of you out there have any advice to give on this? Does anyone know of any commercial / production-quality projects using, or having successfully delivered with, the new REST stuff in Spring 3's MVC Framework. Many thanks Glen

• Question about the benefit of using an ORM

  I want to use an ORM for learning purposes and am try nhibernate. I am using the tutorial and then I have a real project. I can go the "old way" or use an ORM. I'm not sure I totally understand the benefit. On the one hand I can create my abstractions in code such that I can change my databases and be database independent. On the other it seems that if I actually change the database columns I have to change all my code. Why wouldn't I have my application without the ORM, change my database and change my code, instead of changing my database, orm, and code? Is it that they database structure doesn't change that much? I believe there are real benefits because ORMs are used by so many. I'm just not sure I get it yet. Thank you. EDIT: In the tutorial they have many files that are used to make the ORM work http://www.hibernate.org/362.html In the event of an application change, it seems like a lot of extra work just to say that I have "proper" abstraction layers. Because I'm new at it it doesn't look that easy to maintain and again seems like extra work, not less.

• Java abstract visitor - guarantueed to succeed? If so, why?

  I was dealing with hibernate, trying to figure out the run-time class behind proxied instances by using the visitor pattern. I then came up with an AbstractVisitable approach, but I wonder if it will always produce correct results. In c++, I would consider this risky, since this in AbstractVisitable could be referencing to AbstractVisitable::this, and not ConcreteVisitable::this. I was worried that the code under certain circumstances would print class AbstractVisible. Yet the code above outputs class ConcreteVisitable, even though I hid the real type behind a dynamic proxy (the most difficult case I could come up with). Is the abstract visitor approach above guaranteed to work, or are there some pitfalls with this approach? What guarantees are given in Java with respect to the this pointer?

• Moving from NHibernate to FluentNHibernate: assembly error (related to versions)?

  Not sure where to start, but I had gotten the most recent version of NHibernate, successfully mapped the most simple of business objects, etc. When trying to move to FluentNHibernate and do the same thing, I got this error message on build: "System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'NHibernate, Version=2.1.0.4000, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=aa95f207798dfdb4' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference." Background: I'm new to Hibernate, NHibernate, and FluentNHibernate -- but not to .NET, C#, etc. Database I have a database table called Category: (PK) CategoryID (type: int), unique, auto-incrementing UserID (type: uniqueidentifier) -- given the value of the user Guid in ASP.NET database Title (type: varchar(50) -- the title of the category Components involved: I have a SessionProviderClass which creates the mapping to the database I have a Category class which has all the virtual methods for FluentNHibernate to override I have a CategoryMap : ClassMap class, which does the fluent mappings for the entity I have a CategoryRepository class that contains the method to add & save the category I have the TestCatAdd.aspx file which uses the CategoryRepository class. Would be happy to post code for any of those, but I'm not sure that it's necessary, as I think the issue is that somewhere there's a version conflict between what FluentNHibernate references and the NHibernate I have installed from before. • design an extendable database model

  Hi! Currently I'm doing a project whose specifications are unclear - well who doesn't. I wonder what's the best development strategy to design a DB, that's going to be extended sooner or later with additional tables and relations. I want to include "changeability". My main concern is that I want to apply design patterns (it's a university project) and I want to separate the constant factors from those, that change by choosing appropriate design patterns - in my case MVC and a set of sub-patterns at model level. When it comes to the DB however, I may have to resdesign my model in my MVC approach, because my domain model at a later stage my require a different set of classes representing the DB tables. I use Hibernate as an abstraction layer between DB and application. Would you start with a very minimal DB, just a few tables and relations? And what if I want an efficient DB, too? I wonder what strategies are applied in the real world. Stakeholder analysis for example isn't a sufficient planing solution when it comes to changing requirements. I think - at a DB level - my design pattern ends. So there's breach whose impact I'd like to minimize with a smart strategy.

• Flex vs GWT again

  Hi all, I am working on a customized web ontology editor (something like http://webprotege.stanford.edu/ which is built by GWT). My backend will be Java+Spring+Hibernate and domain models are in Java. My frontend will be something like WebProtege which requires extensive RPC call. It is quite clear that I should use GWT as I can refer to the open source code. However, due to company policy, I shall consider Flex as well. I understand Flex can remotely invoke Java backend methods via BlazeDS using AMF (Is there a Flex equivalent of GWT-RPC?). I have read discussion on GWT vs Flex vs ?. If I can make full decision sure I will go with GWT. GWT strengths like support right to left characters, support iPhone/iPad, smaller size, support JSON out of the box, support printing are not important considerations for my project. Besides GWT supports Java generic, enum; domain objects can be shared with both GWT client and server; coding are more seamlessly... anyone can suggest other strong reasons that I should only go with GWT? FYI, I have plenty of Java experience but both GWT and Flex are new to me. Thanks.

  Dear programmers of StackOverflow, recently me and two of my friends from college started a software company. We are developing web-applications using GWT-Spring-Hibernate and other helper frameworks. In a couple of months, we managed to set up a stable back-end and produced some demo programs for CRM solutions. Our area of interest is CRM where we can combine the flexibility of our back-end with the slick looking GWT based GUIs. Unfortunately we live in a third world country (well, kind of two and a half :) and no one here gives our work enough credit, or really cares about the advantages of web-apps. We are stuck at the moment because our current clients do not want to pay that much money for just "putting their local app on the web". Since we can not find satisfying work here, we have decided to work online/international. I was wondering if you guys know a good freelance kind of sites where we can throw ourselves into the market.. Also a question from frustration, to those who are in the field or knowledgeable/interested about web based CRM, how much would you ask/pay for lets say a web app which will keep track of all the patients of a multi-branch clinic also allowing the patients to access to view their own records? • Database choices

  I have a prickly design issue regarding the choice of database technologies to use for a group of new applications. The final suite of applications would have the following database requirements... Central databases (more than one database) using mysql (myst be mysql due to justhost.com). An application to be written which accesses the multiple mysql databases on the web host. This application will also write to local serverless database (sqlite/firebird/vistadb/whatever). Different flavors of this application will be created for windows (.NET), windows mobile, android if possible, iphone if possible. So, the design task is to minimise the quantity of code to achieve this. This is going to be tricky since the languages used are already c# / java (android) and objc (iphone). Not too worried about that, but can the work required to implement the various database access layers be minimised? The serverless database will hold similar data to the mysql server, so some kind of inheritance in the DAL would be useful. Looking at hibernate/nhibernate and there is linq to whatever. So many choices!

  I am developing a search dialog in my eclipse-rcp application. In the search dialog I have a combobox as follows: comboImp = new CCombo(grpColSpet, SWT.BORDER | SWT.READ_ONLY); comboImp.setBounds(556, 46, 184, 27); comboImpViewer = new ComboViewer(comboImp); comboImpViewer.setContentProvider(new ArrayContentProvider()); comboImpViewer.setInput(ImpContentProvider.getInstance().getImps()); comboImpViewer.setLabelProvider(new LabelProvider() { @Override public String getText(Object element) { return ((Imp)element).getImpName(); } }); Imp is a database entity, ManyToOne to the main entity which is searched, and ImpContentProvider is the model class which speaks to embedded sqlite database via jpa/hibernate. This combobox is supposed to contain all instances of Imp, but to also let empty selection; it's value is bound to a service bean as follows: IObservableValue comboImpSelectionObserveWidget = ViewersObservables.observeSingleSelection(comboImpViewer); IObservableValue filterByImpObserveValue = BeansObservables.observeValue(searchPrep, "imp"); bindingContext.bindValue(comboImpSelectionObserveWidget, filterByImpObserveValue , null, null); As soon as the user clicks on the combo, a selection (first element) is made: I can see the call to a selectionlistener i added on the viewer. My question is: after a selection has been made, how do I let the user change his mind and have an empty selection in the combobox? should I add a "fake" empty instance of Imp to the List returned by the ImpContentProvider? or should I implement an alternative to ArrayContentProvider? and one additional related question is: why calling deselectAll() and clearSelection() on the combo does NOT set a null value to the bound bean?

• OSGI, Servlets and JPA hello world / tutorial / example

  I want to build a web application which basically is a restful web-service serving json messages. I would like it to be as simple as possible. I was thinking about using servlets (with annotations). JPA as a database layer is a must - Toplink or Hibernate. Preferably working on Tomcat. I want to have app divided into modules serving different functionality (auth service, customer service, etc..). And I would like to be able to update those modules without reinstalling whole application on the server - like eclipse plugins, user is notified (when he enters webapp's home url) that update is available, clicks it, and app is downloading and installing updated module. I think this functionality can be made with OSGI, but I can't find any example code, or tutorial with simple hello world updatable servlet providing some data from database through jpa. I'm looking for an advice: - Is OSGI the right tool for this or it can be done with something simpler? - Where can I find some examples covering topic (or topics) which I need for this project. - Which OSGI implementation would be best-simplest for this task. *My knowledge of OSGI is basic. I know how bundles are described, I understand concept of OSGI container and what it does. I have never created any OSGI app yet.

• Application that depends heavily on stored procedures

  We currently have an application that depends largely on stored procedures. There is a heavy use of temp tables. It's an extremely large application. Facing this situation, I would like to use Entity Framework or Linq2Sql for a rewrite. I might consider using Fluent Hibernate or Subsonic, as i've used them quite extensively in the past. I've had problems with Linq2Sql generating the return types for the stored procedures because of the usage of the temp tables, and I think it's cumbersome to go and change all the stored procedures from temp tables to in-memory tables. Considering the 2 choices that I want to make, which one of the 2 is the best route to go and why? If my choices are extremely idiotic, please provide alternatives. Edit: The reason for the question and the change is that the data access layer is non-existent and was built 10 years ago. We currently still run into a lot of issues with it. I don't want to divulge too much, but if you saw it, your eyes would start bleeding :)
