  • Definition of the job titles involved in a software development process.

    I have seen many job titles for people involved in a software development process, but never found a consensus about they mean. I know many of them are equivalent, and found some other questions about that here in SO, but I would like to know your definitions and comments about them. I want not only to know if there is really a consensus, but also to know if what I suppose to be a Software Architect, is really a Software Architect, and so on. The job titles I mean are: Developer; System Analyst; Programmer; Analyst Programmer; Software Engineer; Software Architect; Designer; Software Designer; Business Manager; Business Analyst; Program Manager; Project Manager; Development Manager; Tester; Support Analyst; Please, feel free to add more titles to this list in your answers.   • Unexpected StackOverflowError in KeyListener

    I am writing a program that can write sets of questions for review to a file for another program to read. The possible answers are typed into JTextFields at the bottom. It has code to ensure that there won't bew more than one blank JTextField at the end. When I type in answers, at varying points it will throw a StackOverflowError.   • H1 tags, SEO and semantics

    Hi guys, I'm using the H1 tag in my document as the main title, as you do. The text in the H1 is the title of the company, which needs to be shown on every page. I'm using the H2 tag for the title of the main content on each page. So the H1 is the same on every page, and the H2 changes. I know that a lot of sites use the H1 to do what I'm doing with the H2, am I losing out by not doing this? I know that semantically I can't make the H1 into a H2 and vice versa, so I'm wondering what the best option is. Does it matter that my H1 is always the same? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!   • MVC's Html.DropDownList and "There is no ViewData item of type 'IEnumerable<SelectListItem>' that has the key '...'

    ASP.NET MVC's HtmlHelper extension methods take out a lot of the HTML-by-hand drudgery to which MVC re-introduced us former WebForms programmers. Another thing to which MVC re-introduced us is poor documentation, after the excellent documentation for most of the rest of ASP.NET and the .NET Framework which I now realize I'd taken for granted. I'd come to regard using HtmlHelper methods instead of writing HTML by hand as a best practice. When I upgraded a project from MVC 3 to MVC 4, several hidden fields with boolean values broke, because MVC 3 called ToString() on those values implicitly, and MVC 4 threw an exception until you called ToString() explicitly. Fields that used HtmlHelper weren't affected. I then went through dozens of views and manually replaced hidden inputs that had been coded by hand with Html.Hidden calls. So for a dropdown list I was rendering on the initial page as empty, then populating via JavaScript after an AJAX call, I tried to use a HtmlHelper method: @Html.DropDownList("myDropdown") which threw an exception: System.InvalidOperationException: There is no ViewData item of type 'IEnumerable<SelectListItem>' that has the key 'myDropdown'. That's funny--I made no indication I wanted to use ViewData. Why was it looking there? Just render an empty select list for me. When I populated the list with items, it worked, but I didn't want to do that: @Html.DropDownList("myDropdown", new List<SelectListItem>() { new SelectListItem() { Text = "", Value = "" } }) I removed this dummy item in JavaScript after the AJAX call, so this worked fine, but I shouldn't have to give it a list with a dummy item when what I really want is an empty select. A bit of research with JetBrains dotPeek (helpfully recommended by Scott Hanselman) revealed the problem. Html.DropDownList requires some sort of data to render or it throws an error. The documentation hints at this but doesn't make it very clear. Behind the scenes, it checks if you've provided the DropDownList method any data. If you haven't, it looks in ViewData. If it's not there, you get the exception above. In my case, the helper wasn't doing much for me anyway, so I reverted to writing the HTML by hand (I ain't scared), and amended my best practice: When an HTML control has an associated HtmlHelper method and you're populating that control with data on the initial view, use the HtmlHelper method instead of writing by hand.

    Hi all I have (just like the rest) inherited some struts 1 code. I have had need to add a few more pages to this project. What I cannot figure out is how to map several distinct but similarly natured input elements to the my ActionForm. Let me elaborate. I create a new <Input> element dynamically as the user inputs more and more items (I use the YUI autocomplete form element and for each entered input I add it as an input element to my form and draw a new YUI autocomplete - complex sounding, I know) So... I have a shared drive with some HTML files, that I am mounting as a local drive W: in Windows, from the VirtualBox server \VBOXSVR. I want to look at them with a browser in Windows. Chrome in Windows 7 opens and shows those HTML files just fine (file:///W:/welcome.html). But Internet Explorer does not, and shows this error instead of the files: Internet Explorer cannot display the web page What you can try: [button Diagnose Connection Problems] More information This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including: Internet connectivity has been lost. The website is temporarily unavailable. The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable. The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain. If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section. For the internet zone in the status bar, it shows: Internet | Protected Mode: On IE settings are a mystery to me, and I could possibly get it to work by tweaking IE settings, but I don't know which ones. How do I make IE show the same files that Chrome is happy to show? (Chrome showing them means that the files themselves are fine, there is something about the setup that just makes IE be a diva.)

  • Emails from web site sometimes blank or gibberish

    Our company has one web site with an online store based on osCommerce. The system sends emails for various reasons, such as password changes, order confirmations, etc., using PHP's mail() function. We occasionally have customers report that the email they received is either blank (email is plain text format) or gibberish (email is in HTML format). In the latter case it's really just HTML that's being displayed as raw text but of course the customers can't read it. In this case the first opening tag's <, and sometimes a few more characters, has gone missing. In an attempt to determine whether this was happening only for certain customers or email systems I configured the web site to send a CC of each message to a service account at my end. Those CC'd messages always arrive intact and display correctly in Outlook. For what it's worth, it seems to happen a little more frequently to Hotmail users but is certainly not limited to them. As the web site is on a shared (Debian) host there's precious little I can do about debugging things from that end, although if I made the right request I feel the hosting company staff would help me, even though they have limited resources to spend on such matters. Any suggestions on what else I might do to try and determine just why those emails are not being received correctly by some customers, yet a CC copy arrives just fine?

    I have a script which will download html files into current directory. Then it'll generate a report based on these html files. At last, it'll delete all these html files. So, when I run this script, I want to make sure there is no html files in current dir.   • XHTML / CSS help?

    Basically on GunChester my project I have an few pixel wide gap between #login_top (top image holder) and the 3 CSS col's below, #login_left, #login_centre and #login_right so that my first question why? and how can I fix this, this is in FF, Chrome and IE. Secondly the BG image seems to be overlaying twice as in its stretched at the top then the full picture does display as it should. I did have it working but when trying to fix the pixel gap I must of messed something up but no idea what, so it is now going pear shape, lease help with both these situations :)? I’ve used JavaScript ~2 years ago (just a little), so I don’t really know how to write the exact code. I’ve found something on the internet, but it doesn’t do what I want. I want to have the following: The user can check the RadioButtons. When the user clicks the Button, the JavaScript function should return all the checked radio buttons (I only need to know which RadioButton is checked). Since I know the name of the RadioButtons in my Windows 8 App, I can do the following: var object = WebView.InvokeScript("JavaScriptFunctionNAME", NameOfRadiobutton); So the WebView invokes the script and should get as a return the VALUE of the RadioButton, which is checked. “JavaScriptFunctionNAME” = name of the function in Javascript NameOfRadiobutton = the name of the RadioButton as a parameter (for example “frage1”). Currently I’m returning the value of the radiobutton, which is checked in the RadioGroup “frage1”. How can I check every RadioButton by it’s parameter? By this I mean I have a parameter “frage1” and return the value of the checked RadioButton. After this, I call the function again with the parameter “frage2” and return the checked RadioButtons value. Could anyone help me out with the JavaScript-function?

  • Expand <div> tag to bottom of page with CSS

    Hi all, I know this question gets asked a lot because I have looked at many "solutions" trying to get this to work for me. I can get it to work if I hack up the html but I want to use all CSS. All I want is a header with two columns below it, and I want these three items to fill the entire page/screen, and I want to do it with CSS and without frames or tables. The XAMPP user interface looks exactly how I want my page to look, but again, I do not want to use frames. I cannot get the two orangeish colored columns to extend to the bottom of the screen. I do have it so it looks like the right column extends to the bottom of the screen just by changing the body background color to the same color as the background color of the right column, but I would like both columns to extend to the bottom so I didn't have to do that.   • Error When Loading Images on Local Host Test Server

    I have a peculiar problem that I just can't seem to find an explanation. I'm working on an AngularJS site for our family and am integrating data from various web services. Currently I am working on the photos section which will integrate in photos from our Flickr account. I have a main page which lists the various photo sets and displays the set's primary photo along with the title. In fact, the image title does display! I've tested it with Firefox, Safari and Chrome...all three browsers fail. I cannot find any explanation as to why it would work remotely but fail locally. Also, the images show up on the first page, but not on the second, even though one of the images on the second page is the same image URL as on the first page. Even going directly to the second page, bypassing the first page, still fails. Any ideas on how to fix this? It would be nice to test locally without having to upload to the server each time I make a change. Update: I have shut off the $sce security to see if that was causing the issue. Although it resulted in turning the error off, the files still don't load on the local test server. I have used the developer tools' network monitor and it doesn't even show an attempt to retrieve the files. AngularJS appears to shut down the retrieval, although the correct path shows up in the DOM.

  • IE6 rendering bug. Some parsed <li> elements are losing their closing tags.

    I have been working with IE6 for many years [sob], but have never seen this particular bug before, and I can't seem to find a reference to it on the Web. The problem appears to be with how IE6 is parsing the HTML of a nested list. Even though the markup is correct, IE6 somehow munges the code when it is parsed, and drops the closing tags of some of the <li> elements.   • Internet Explorer background-color hover problem

    I have a strange Problem with table formating using IE 7. My table looks like this: In IE, when using border-collapse, the borders don't get displayed correctly. That's why I used this fix: .table-vmlist td { border-top: 1px solid black; } td.col-vm-status, tr.row-details td { border-left: 1px solid black; } td.col-vm-rdp, tr.row-details td { border-right: 1px solid black; } .table-vmlist { border-bottom: 1px solid black;} When hovering over the row, it gets highlighted with CSS: .table-vmlist tr.row-vm { background-color: #A4C3EF; } .table-vmlist tr.row-vm:hover { background-color: #91BAEF; } Now, in IE 7, when moving the mouse from the top to the bottom of the list, every row gets highlighted correctly and no problems happen. But if I move my mouse pointer from the bottom of the list to the top, every second row seems to loose the border. Can someone explain what the problem is, and how to solve it?   • Grabbing all <a> tags in a specific div and displaying them

    So I'v got a small problem with my portfolio site (you can see it at here) When you click on a portfolio piece, a top section opens up to reveal the details (Title, year, role, description) as well as the photos. I'v been able to get each project to replace all the text data, but I can't seem to get the images to load into the thumbnails. I have been able to get the last image i'm looking for in all of the images on the site, but not display each photo for each project.
