• DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

  I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). A very similar issue is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/direct3d-acceleration-is-not-available-in-windows/4c345e6e-dc68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1 The proposed answer, which looks very promising, doesn't seem to work for me. Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. Would you like to bypass Direct3D this time? No - Crash Yes - Works, but in Display tab: DirectDraw Acceleration: Disabled Direct3D Acceleration: Not Available AGP Texture Acceleration: Not Available If I click "Run 64-bit DxDiag", all three are "Enabled". I should also note that I've tried the following steps as Microsoft suggests, but I'm not able to do so as the "Change Settings" button is disabled. Some programs run very slowly—or not at all—unless Microsoft DirectDraw or Direct3D hardware acceleration is turned on. To determine this, click the Display tab, and then under DirectX Features, check to see whether DirectDraw, Direct3D, and AGP Texture Acceleration appear as Enabled. If not, try turning on hardware acceleration. Click to open Screen Resolution. Click Advanced settings. Click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to Full. • AWStats consumes too much resource, how to disable temporarily

  For some days AWStats takes %10-%20 of my CPU, takes 400-550 MB RAM and works for hours. Maybe my site's traffic became larger so process time takes more time than before or some bugs in program makes this. Anyway I want to disable AWStats temporarily. Maybe I would want to activate it in future. I found that answer. But it gives commands to remove AWStats. I only want to disable it temporarily. My system is Centos 6.3, Plesk 11.5.30 Update #19. I tried to disable cron jobs. I run this # killall awstats.pl I opened # vi /etc/cron.daily/awstats file and I changed it to this: #!/bin/sh #/usr/share/awstats/awstats_updateall.pl now -awstatsprog=/var/www/cgi-bin/awstats/awstats.pl -configdir=/etc/awstats >/dev/null 2>&1 exit 0 After some time I still see that awstats is running. What should I do more to not to awstats run again ? But without removing my files. After changing " /etc/cron.daily/awstats" file awstats doesn't start in daytime. But every night in 03:15 awstats starts again. Because of Plesk auto updates are working at that time, I changed from Plesk. Don't auto update automatically. But it seems like last night at 03:15 awstats started again. Is there any way to stop awstats temporarily except this solution ? Because this solution deletes awstats configs permanently and I don't know how to revert it back in future ? • OSX/Darwin unresolved symbols when linking functions from <math.h>

  I'm in the process of porting a large'ish (~1M LOC) project from a Window/Visual Studio environment to other platforms, the first of which happens to be Mac OS X. Originally the project was configured as Visual Studio solutions and projects, but now I'm using (the excellent) Premake (http://industriousone.com/premake) to generate project files for multiple platforms (VS, XCode, GMake). I configured, ported and built the first few projects without any significant problems, but having ported the math lib, I ran into this weird linking error that I haven't been able to resolve: Any functions used from math.h will fail to link (causing unresolved symbols). For reference, I'm using Premake v4.2.1 to generate projects for XCode v3.2.1, which is building using gcc v4.2 for the x86_64 architecture. (All this on 64-bit Snow Leopard) I've tried to persuade gcc to link and build everything against a 'known' SDK by adding -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk -mmacosx-version-min=10.6 to the build command line. Now under normal circumstances, adding -lm should take care of this, however in Darwin, those math libs are included in libSystem, which, as far as I can tell, gets implicitly linked by gcc/ld. I've tried creating a dummy project from within XCode which just runs: float f = log2(2.0)+log2f(3.f)+log1p(1.1)+log1pf(1.2f)+sin(8.0); std::cout << f << std::endl; and as expected, this builds just fine. However, if I put the same thing in the code inside the Premake generated project, all those math functions end up unresolved. Now comparing the linking command from the 'native' XCode project with my generated XCode project, they seem pretty identical (except that my generated project links other libs as well). 'Native' project: /Developer/usr/bin/g++-4.2 -arch x86_64 -dynamiclib -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk -Lsomepath -Fsomepath -filelist somefile -install_name somename -mmacosx-version-min=10.6 -single_module -compatibility_version 1 -current_version 1 -o somename Generated project: /Developer/usr/bin/g++-4.2 -arch x86_64 -dynamiclib -Lsomepath -Fsomepath -filelist somefile -install_name somename -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk -mmacosx-version-min=10.6 somelib.a somelib2.a somelib.dylib somelib2.dylib -single_module -compatibility_version 1 -current_version 1 -o somename Any help or hints about how to proceed would be most appreciated. • Live CD / Live USB much faster than full install

  I've observed it on both laptops I own! HP Compaq nx6125 and Ubuntu 11.04 x64 - somewhat solved Lenovo Thinkpad T500 and Ubuntu 11.10 x64 - help needed! I'm still struggling with the Thinkpad to get performance level similar to that of 10 y.o. laptops... All in all a really serious issue with multiple versions of Ubuntu that renders computers with perfectly compatible hardware unusable, as far as out of the box experience is concerned. Troubleshooting resultant issues seems to be a hard case even for users with some experience with installing graphics drivers. EDIT: I can't really post additional details. Two different ubuntu versions, two laptops, two different set of graph. drivers (OS vs ATI prop.) - all with the same symptoms. Also I can't stress enough how massive the performance degradation is compared to a healthy system. For that reason I ask for input from people who may know roughly what are we dealing with here. I can post more details if we were to focus on my current Thinkpad T500. In that case my current system details: Lenovo Thinkpad T500 Ubuntu 11.10 x64 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (also see the "What I have already tried" section about Intel graphics tested) ATI Catalyst 11.10 drivers OCZ Agility 3 SSD but! same with the default driver for ATI the card same with the prop. driver for the ATI card from Jockey (Additional drivers applet) What I have already tried: 0. Switching to Intel integrated card (Intel GMA 4500M HD) with the default driver - same effects = may indicate not driver related problem but a problem with something of global influence like e.g. nomodeset or other I don't even know about. (What you can read above) ATI Catalyst 11.10 and radeon.modeset=0 boot parameter + disabled Wait for VBlank. Unity 2D Ubuntu 10.04 LTS tested (ubuntu-10.04.3-desktop-i386.iso): Both live USB and installed version blazing fast! (on the default drivers - without even installing the proprietary fglrx drivers). re2 a) seems to give me the only significant results (still poor) - perfect Unity elements performance with the same crawling stuttering/lagging when dragging windows around. re2 b) this happens often http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b68/Bucic/ubuntuforumsorg/Screenshotat2011-10-28083140.png re2 c) Sometimes I am able to witness a normal performance when dragging a window around but only for a second or two. Once it seems to work be smooth with it, the other time - without it. Really can't tell.

• ASUS Q500A will not boot from live DVD

  I just purchased a new PC yesterday, an ASUS Q500A. I downloaded Ubuntu 12.10, burned it to a DVD, and tried to install it. As expected, I came to a screen that asked if I wanted to try, install, OEM install, or check the disc. After going to try, the DVD spins up as if it's about to boot the system and then immediately spins down again to leave a black screen. I've tried several boot options: noacpi nolacpi acpi=off Removing quiet splash -- nolacpi results in the DVD drive not spinning up at all. The rest have no effect. Some stats about the system: Intel i5-3210M processor Intel Integrated Graphics 4000 Any tips on other things to try?

• ubuntu 12.04 install black screen

  When I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 i get the grub 1.99 screen that allows me to select ubuntu install, or try ubuntu with out installing. When i select install ubuntu the screen goes black and i can tell the hard drive is running, but there are no on screen prompts. I looked into this problem and attempted to change a few variables by pressing "e" to edit the ubuntu install boot screen I then changed splash to nospash, quiet to noquiet, and add nomodeset at the end of the line that starts with linux before the "--". This still changes nothing when i press F10 to boot. I have tried removing quiet and splash altogether and adding nomodeset, but still to no avail. I am a little frustrated and don't know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!   I am having a problem with my laptops integrated cam. Its a brand new laptop and the cam worked in windows 8. But I dont do windows.   My laptop uses a hybrid graphics hardware. Using the vgaswitcheroo I am able to power off either card and switch between them correctly. The issue is that the system wakes up/resumes from suspend correctly only when using the discrete graphics, or atleast the discrete graphics must be powered on even if the display is connected to the onboard intel card. Has anyone faced this issues? Is there any workaround? I only want to use the integrated card and not the discrete amd card. System Info Intel HD 3000 ATI mobility radeon HD 7600M Ubuntu 12.10

Almost after each resume from suspend (or even after unlocking the screen after it goes blank) I get apportcheckresume error and message "Ubuntu 12.10 has encountered an internal error".Many times the system event wont resume and I need to restart it. Other times log in screen is not visible, the screen is blank and i have to write my password "in blanco". • Why does my Ubuntu freeze in the middle of something with a blank screen?

  I am facing a serious problem as my Dell Optiplex 745 loaded with Ubuntu 12.04 32bit freezes with a blank screen no mouse cursor no keyboard activity in many occasions. Sometimes when I open firefox, or software center, I really can't tell what the main problem is, but what i am certain about is it i have to do a hard reset to reboot. I tried to use a live-cd to boot but it did the same, tried the recovery console but couldn't find a way to fix from there (I am a new user) suspected a hardware problem but windows runs flawlessly so I believe its something related to ubuntu. Specs: Intel Celeron D 3.06 GHZ 3.0 GB ram Intel built in graphics Q965 1 TB HDD Bios Phoenex 2.6.4 Please help I really love ubuntu and I don't want to go back to windows!

  I have a KWorld UB445-U ATSC Hybrid TV Stick. I've tried MythTV, but it kept crashing when I was trying to set it up, and didn't get anywhere with it. I've tried VLC and just tried Kaffiene. I'm not sure how to work VLC or Kaffeine to accept my TV. Can someone help me with it? • Settings for multiple monitors are not stored

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04. on a Lenovo Thinkpad T400. I connected an external monitor as a second display. The laptop stands under the external screen. The laptop has a native resolution of 1440x900 (16:10), the external monitor 1280x1024 (5:4). There are two graphic adapters: one internal Intel GMA 4500 MHD and an discrete ATI card. Currently, the integrated Intel is enabled. I use the Display application to arrange the position of the monitors so it look like this: The problem: Whenever I restart my computer the configuration gets lost. First, the displays are mirrored instead of extended. I have to press Fn + F7 two times to switch to extended mode. Second, the Display settings still look like this: I know this worked once when I was running Ubuntu 10.10. I cannot tell since when it does not work. Do you know how I can permanently store the settings?

• How to resolve CGDirectDisplayID changing issues on newer multi-GPU Apple laptops in Core Foundation

  In Mac OS X, every display gets a unique CGDirectDisplayID number assigned to it. You can use CGGetActiveDisplayList() or [NSScreen screens] to access them, among others. Per Apple's docs: A display ID can persist across processes and system reboot, and typically remains constant as long as certain display parameters do not change. On newer mid-2010 MacBook Pro's, Apple started using auto-switching Intel/nVidia graphics. Laptops have two GPU's, a low-powered Intel, and a high-powered nVidia. Previous dual-GPU laptops (2009 models) didn't have auto-GPU switching, and required the user to make a settings change, logoff, and then logon again to make a GPU switch occur. Even older systems only had one GPU. There's an issue with the mid-2010 models where CGDirectDisplayID's don't remain the same when a display switches from one GPU to the next. For example: Laptop powers on. Built-In LCD Screen is driven by Intel chipset. Display ID: 30002 External Display is plugged in. Built-In LCD Screen switches to nVidia chipset. It's display ID changes: 30004 External Display is driven by nVidia chipset. ...at this point, the Intel chipset is dormant... User unplugs External Display. Built-In LCD Screen switches back to Intel chipset. It's display ID changes back to original: 30002 My question is, how can I match an old display ID to a new display ID when they alter due to a GPU change? Thought about: I've noticed that the display ID only changes by 2, but I don't have enough test Mac's available to determine if this is common to all new MacBook Pro's, or just mine. Kind of a kludge if "just check for display ID's which are +/-2 from one another" works, anyway. Tried: CGDisplayRegisterReconfigurationCallback(), which notifies before-and-after when displays are going to change, has no matching logic. Unfortunately, it does not return YES if GPU's have changed for a monitor. I can, theoretically, compared just the DisplayProductID and DisplayVendorID keys, but I'm writing end-user software, and am worried of a situation where users have two or more identical monitors plugged in. • Kinetic Scroll in Maverick

  I have Sony VAIO FW 230J laptop. I was using Lucid and upgraded my system to Maverick beta in September 2010. Although there were few issues with beta release on my system although I did not felt myself in any deadlock. The most notable experience on my ubuntu was the smooth and kinetic scrolling and very sensitive touch pad experience with finer control that was oddly normal in previous releases and even on windows 7 currently. Definitely this release of ubuntu is improved for touch UI experience. I believe that this is magic of 10.10. For my official system I waited until the final release was out. After installing (upgrading) official system to Maverick I am not feeling the same smooth and kinetic scroll experience. My laptop has Graphics: Intel DMA-X4500MHD while my official desktop has Graphics: Intel DMA-X4500HD Do I need to install or update some software package to have similar kinetic scroll experience?
