• Dell Vostro 1520 Unable to Read Compact Flash Card with Adapter?

  I Purchased the Dell Vostro 1520 a few months ago and recently tried using a PCMCIA adapter for the Compact Flash card my camera uses. I can't get the laptop to find the card. Tried going online to see if a CF card should work, but have not found a clear or definate answer. I do not want to deal with Dell on the phone as even 800 #'s cost me more than it's worth to use. Hoping someone can let me know if I'm wasting my time trying to get the laptop to read my CF card. It's the only type card I have to try the input slot, so can't test to see if the input slot even works. Thanks, -- ‹(•¿•)› Jim

• Stop a particular key getting captured by rdesktop

  Hello, I want F12 to be not capture by my rdesktop while in fullscreen, so that I can do whatever stuff I'm doing on my remote Windows computer, but pressing F12 would bring down yakuake, and I can type down my commands, or use vim etc for whatever I'm doing. Is there any possible way to do this? I tried playing with keymaps, but that didn't help. I set F12 to inhibit, but that seems to have stopped sending F12 altogether, rather than let gnome catch it and let yakuake pop up. Would be really grateful for answers. I am ready to do my homework, if someone could please just give me pointers etc. Thanks :). Sidenote: My current arranement stems from my large monitor in lab, and small personal laptop monitor, and the laptop has Windows 7. My lab computer has Linux, on which I do my coding work.

• Create a bootable Ghost CD from a HDD

  Hi all, I have a little issue and it may be quite simple to fix. I need to Ghost some computers (locally) and now, it seems to be really hard to have several computers to boot from floppy. Sometimes the floppy is not detected (Old PC) and doesn't boot from it. So I need to create a Ghost image from a HDD. I use Disk to Disk when ghosting from an IDE HDD but I'd like to change it to Disk from Image. My issue is it's a linux, IDE HDD, and I have a laptop with Windows 7. I also have a USB adaptor for IDE HDD. I'm trying to find a way to create a Bootable CD from the HDD connected on my laptop with the USB adaptor. Is it possible to do this? What would be the best way to do that?

The scenario is as follows: For location public (employee plugging in his laptop in hotel, public wi-fi,etc) all inbound connections are restricted, only outbound VPN + www is enabled. Employee then initiates a VPN connection, VPN pushes routes to 10.0.0.0/8 subnet Now I would like to have lax security rules for traffic from/to 10.0.0.0/8 that comes through the VPN interface, while still protecting the laptop from traffic that comes via uplink interface as if it was private.   I'm planning to refresh my laptop. I've been using a thinkpad T42 for a long time and run Ubuntu on it. I'm planning to move to using a desktop for all my heavy work and getting a very light netbook style machine for mobile use. I need a decent keyboard, good battery life and a display that's bright and responsive. I'm evaluating a couple of laptops including a mac but have never come across information about a Sony Vaio. Do any of the people have experience with the laptop? What are your opinions? Does it work fine with Linux? Is it tinkerable (a big problem with the macbooks). How's the build quality, how's the service?

• Can't Mount Databases in the Recovery Storage Group in Exchange 2003

  After restoring some mail stores, mounting them in the recovery storage group errors out. So far a repair with eseutil (which the log says was successful) and a server reboot has been tried. A defrag is currently running on the mail store I need to go through this again to post the exact error codes, so I will be updating this question. But I thought someone who does this a lot might have a "More times than not..." answer in the meantime.

• Alt-Escape has different effect on different Win-XP machines

  This is really weird. On my desktop computer, I often use Alt-Escape to send the active window to the background. This is really useful for window management. However, when I try pressing Alt-Escape on my new laptop, it does something similar but not identical: It sends the active window back, but not all the way to the background. i.e., instead of giving it the lowest index number, it just decrements its index number, probably by 1. Both computers have the same Windows XP Professional. Why is this? And how can I make my laptop computer send the active window to the background instead?

• Wireless connection switches off IP address

  I have a Lenovo laptop with windows XP and a wireless connection at home. The wireless connection works when initially I switch on the computer. but if I leave it for even 5 minutes, the wireless is gone. Then I have to shut it off and start computer all over again, waiting for 5 minutes. Even if the wireless speed is 48Mbps or better, it gives the message "Renewing IP address" and gets stuck there not moving to the next stage. Other laptop in the household works fine and can be left on. Why does this happen ? I suspect that IP address is the problem and somehow is not registered in all the necessary files.

• How does the build quality of laptops compare?

  I'm looking to replace my 5 year old laptop. I want my next laptop to endure at least this long. I typically have Thunderbird, Firefox, Eclipse Java IDE, Skype, a ssh session, and Apache Tomcat running. I'm currently running Karmic Ubuntu, but am agnostic about operating system and would move to Win 7 or OS X. I frequently travel with this computer. I also value battery longevity and power conservation (if possible). Above all I'm looking to minimize cost. I think the hardware that best meets my needs is an Intel i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, 100GB @7200 rpm or SSD hardrive, and about 15 inch monitor. These specs are met by most brands. Does anyone know specific pros/cons and build quality for Macbook Pro, Lenovo Thinkpad (W510 or T510), Sony's VPC-F1190, and ASUS G Series G73JH-X1 NoteBook? Are all i7 processors created equal? Do you have other suggestion that meet my needs?

• My control key doesn't work, how do I fix it??

  My control key on the right doesn't work how it should. E.g. Right ctrl + T won't open new tabs in firefox, right ctrl + w won't switch windows in vim, etc. I know the key isn't physically broken, because xev shows that the right ctrl key generates events, but it just isn't responding as I expect it to in applications.   My HP pavilion laptop is getting pretty old and the speakers no longer work properly. So I've disabled all audio devices, including disabling the light-touch volume controls at boot-up. The one sound still here that I can't get rid of is teh alert beep whenever there's an error. It's annoying at the best of times, but when your laptop has no other sounds at all it's intensly irritating! Nothing I change in the windows settings or in the BIOS seems to have any effect. Any ideas how to switch them off?

• Win7 safe mode pretends it's Xp?

  hi there, just a question in between. a friend of mine brougth me a laptop that does not work anymore and wanted me to check whether i can do something. she told me its windows 7, and startup screen and login screen look like it. howevere, as she gets a bluescreen on startup it is only possible to boot in safe mode where the system pretends to be windows xp sp3. the system also may have 1 gig of ram but the system itself states that it has 954 mb of ram which is a value i´ve never seen before. is there everything corrupt from operating system to hardware, or am i just a newbie that does not know that windows 7 pretends to be winxp sp3 in safe mode? or is this laptop just the victim of an illegal, crazy copy of xp sold as win7? maybe some strange chinese stuff? i also recognized that the startup screen of Outlook Express is pronounced as "Outllok Express" (no typo) i´m kinda confused, maybe someone could put light into this ;) thanks

• dd-wrt Bonjour/ netbios etc on two subnets

  Hi I was wondering if any clever people out there could help me. I have a network setup with two different subnets 192.168.1.0 and 192.168.0.0 one router is connected to a VPN (via OpenVPN) the other is not. Both routers have static routes to each other and a device on one can communicate to another without issues when using IP addresses. My problem is I want to use services like Bonjour, Netbios and Apple Talk across the two networks, which currently does not work. A laptop connected on one subnet will not see a laptop connected on another. Is there anyway that you can connect the two networks together so these sort of local service will work??? I guess I have to forward the boardcast packets but I have no idea how to do this. Thanks for any help...

• Combine drivers from multiple Win7 installs to single image

  I need to prepare a Windows 7 image with drivers for multiple systems (Lenovo laptops). I currently have an image prepared on one laptop type but need to grab the drivers appropriate for the other laptop types as well to ensure that it works on all systems. From what I can tell, the procedure will be: create a boot CD with imageX take a .wim image prepared on the first type of systems take .wim images from the other systems mount the other images in WAIK extract the drivers from the other images inject the drivers into the first .wim boot a system with the boot CD and redeploy the updated .wim image into the Windows partition take an image of the drive with usual imaging tools This all seems a little too convoluted, but I'm willing to do it to get the proper drivers into the image. This is (seemingly) necessarily complicated by having more than one OS on the disk image. Am I on the right track?

• How to discern video details from Linux Live CD

  I was having trouble getting X.Org to work with the video card in a recently aquired laptop, so I decided to try to probe around the configuration of a Linux Live CD to figure out how to set up my kernel. I chose the Sabayon 5.0 Live DVD because it was the only one that I could find that was the same or newer than the 2.6.32 kernel I have installed on the laptop right now. Of course, the DVD booted right into GNOME without issue, unlike the hangs and crashes that I had been getting. So, I want to figure out what kernel driver this Live DVD is currently using, but I don't know how to. hwinfo doesn't shed any light on the matter, and lspci -vnn doesn't list a driver for my video device, though both methods correctly identify that I have an Intel 855GM video processor. How can I find out this information?

• Revo 3610 not doing hdmi handshake

  I am having a problem with my Revo 3610 witch is connected to my tv via hdmi. For some reason will it not do the hdmi handshake with the tv, so my tv does not think that there are anything in the hdmi port. I have tested the tv and it works find, with my laptop and dvd. It dose work some times, but this time have it failed for 2 days in a row, and i have tried rebooting, turning the tv off and on, and so on nothing helps. I can trick the TV to listen to the HDMI with connecting with my laptop and then change the hdmi back to my revo, this on the other hand results in the image going thoug nicely but there are a big fat "Check signal cable." on the screen.   Drive 0, Partition 1 can't be deleted or formatted, at least by using the HD drive bay and attempting a delete or format with the 32-bit Win 7 CD. Most of my data is still on it and available for read/write (where the drive isn't occasionally pocked with "unrecoverable" or "corrupted" files). I've just never heard of a condition where the HD cannot be formattable. I now just have a very expensive backup drive that's got Swiss cheesed areas. The thing doesn't accept a Windows 7 repair or reinstall either.

• dd clone hard drive: Input/Output Error though "chkdsk" says OK

  Hi, I've used dd to clone hard drives before using 'dd' and a live cd, but have run into a problem. The issue: dd fails with an "Input/Output Error" on /dev/sda3 , even though windows "check disk" (chkdsk) says it's ok. Context: Trying to replace my laptop hard drive w/ a faster one of the same size Laptop has NTFS on a 320gb hard drive Booting into knoppix Knoppix recognizes 'original' drive (/dev/sda) I am using a usb connection for ‘new' drive (irrelevant, but just an fyi) Knoppix recognizes the usb drive as /dev/sdb Using dd, as follows: dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb "dd" gives the I/O error above at 82Gb (out of 320Gb) I then tried checking each partition as follows and found it failed on /dev/sda3: dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/null dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/null dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/dev/null I have ran windows xp chkdsk on the offending drive in both "find only" and "find and fix" mode and it reports no errors Question How can I find and fix the error on my original hard drive partition (i.e. /dev/sda3) so that dd reads it successfully?

  PHP's curl bindings are nowhere to be found in yum. By looking in the yum.repos.d I can see that rpmforge is being used. Build from source? phpize isn't installed and it isn't in yum. What do i do? How do i repair the repo? This is RHEL5 machine that is i686.

  After uninstalling Symantec Enpoint Protection (manually) one computer (Windows XP) has an inoperative NIC; it shows up in device manager as conflicted. I tried doing a windows repair from CD, which did not improve the situation. When I went to reinstall the drivers, driver installation failed with: Cannot install this hardware The system cannot find the file specified I've deleted the NIC in device manager without improvement.

• Web connection speed issue

  I encounter a strange issue with my web (wireless) connection on my laptop (Ubuntu 11.10) I'm able to have 540kbps (down) on all computers in my house (including laptop at the same distance from the box) except me. When i do a speed connection test, i can have this optimal speed immediately after booting. As i surf on the net, watching videos, download things, etc... it becomes slower progressively until 100-110 kbps and the speed remain the same until i reboot. I tried to figure out if a process consume bandwith in background with nethogs but i found nothing suspicious. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance for your help !!

• Sharing Internet Connection in Windows 7 is so much more frustrated than Windows XP

  Back to the time of Windows XP, from Properties dialog of my Wireless Connection, I can enable sharing and then select LAN network from the Drop Down List and boom, I can share it with my friend. We just need a LAN cable (either cross or not-cross is OK) and his Laptop will get an auto IP to gain access to internet. But now with the new Windows 7, everything starts to suck. I cannot see the Drop Down List any more in the sharing panel and my friends Laptop cannot get an automatic IP anymore. Am I doing anything wrong over there? How can I gain back the peace I used to have with Windows XP?
