• MacBook Pro 13 (mid 2010 model) - External Display Low Resolution

  I am trying to connect my ASUS VH242H (1920x1020), with my Macbook Pro. The laptop has a 320m nvidia and it should be more than enough to support an external display. I had my old laptop connected, (with a 9600mgt) and it worked fine.I am not mirroring the display I just want an extension ( if possible only the external display diplaying). Why is the external display is showing only the lower (1378x768) resolution? I am using this adapter: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002WUVAVE/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 Any help please?

• Dual boot Windows 8 and Ubuntu?

  I've installed Windows 8 on a machine (lenovo x220 laptop) with Ubuntu 12.10 already installed on another disk. I am guessing that Windows 8 has convinced the laptop to switch to UEFI boot (rather than the BIOS boot that was there previously) as the Lenovo splash screen on startup now no longer has the options to interrupt the boot process (e.g. to choose the boot drive). Previously I had Windows 8 on one drive and Ubuntu on the other drive, so could choose my OS through the BIOS rather than through grub or other bootloader but now no longer have that option. How can I get back the option to boot Ubuntu? I would sort of prefer UEFI boot as it seems much faster than BIOS.

  I have a dual-band 802.11n router operating in both frequency bands with the same SSID. My Windows 7 laptop has a dual-band wireless adapter. Is there a way to find out which frequency band is the one currently used by the client? Also, is there a way to set the preffered band? Thanks. EDIT1: The router is Linksys E4200 (V2) and I essentially want to keep the 2.4GHz band in the mixed-mode so that the legacy 802.11g devices can connect while allocating the 5.0GHz band for 802.11n devices. • Windows 8 - Synaptics driver - Mouse keeps freezing

  I have Win-8 Pro installed on my Dell XPS. This has Synaptic PS/2 Port TouchPad. As I upgraded the Laptop from Win7 to Win8 all my factory Mouse software (along with other preinstalled software) was all deleted. So for the mouse, I installed Windows 8/7/XP/Vista 64/32-bit Edition v16.3.15.1. Problem - every few seconds (or minutes at times), the mouse freezes. Windows is still working, it's just the mouse. I have to wait 5-15 seconds before the mouse works again. I thought this was because the Synaptic Driver I am installing is not Win-8 compatible but this is not the case. It seems the mouse freezes when Windows is working, loading or opening new programs/windows. I have the same problem in my other Laptop which has upgraded Win8 pro. This is a Dell Studio. What's causing this?

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series video card, using the ATI Catalyst Control Center to span my Windows XP display over the laptop display and a Dell flatpanel LCD. This works fine, but I'm used to NVIDIA multi-desktop that let me control the "Start bar" to either exist on only 1 screen... be duplicated on both, or (what I want), stretched across both. Is this possible with the ATI card/Catalyst Software? If not, are there any utilities out there that will handle this for me? • Sony Vaio: I can't type 'less and greater than' signs in TR keyboard layout

  I have a strange trouble with my Sony Vaio VPCCW21FX. My laptop has a Turkish Q keyboard and I'm using TR keyboard layout on Windows 7 x64 Home Premium. The problem is, I cannot find a usual way to type less than or greater than signs unless I switch to EN keyboard layout. These signs are showed on the keyboard together with the Turkish letters "Ö" and "Ç", as you can see from the below photo of my laptop's keyboard. So, how can I type these signs without switching to EN keyboard layout? I tried Fn and Alt keys but it doesn't work. I need to use TR layout since I need Turkish letters while writing my documents and e-mails.

• Why does my computer show a black screen when booting into Windows Vista?

  Today, I removed some old software from dad's vista, and installed SP1. After which the computer restarted and it went into a "black" screen. I left it running for a few hours, and the laptop was really hot. I tried to get into safemode, start from last known good start up, but nothing seemed to work. i know it stops after loading \windows\system32\drivers\cplir.sys what's going on and how can I fix his computer? Update I'm still unable to fix my install. Repair and restoring the OS fail. The laptop has the vista partition built into it. I can't boot through a USB, and my other computer doesn't have a cd/dvd writer Update 2 I tried chkdisk /f and although it fixed some errors, I still get the black screen of death.

• LAN cable not connected, but it is

  I have a Windows XP SP2 desktop PC. It connects to the internet with a LAN cable (there's a wireless router for my laptop in between). The problem should be software because: when i tried connecting the same LAN cable to my laptop it works when i plugin the LAN cable (onboard) the green light is on and the orange light flickers when i tried the other cable (that feeds the wireless router) i have the same problem it worked a few days ago, nothing specific changed I tried removing the ethernet card from the device manager, and windows automatically reinstalled it. What could cause this? What can I try?

• Win-XP Browsers Hang on page load - (waiting for...)

  Hello, I’m having problems with my browsers hanging on loading pages on my desktop machine. I’m using Windows XP Pro with SP3 and fully updated except for IE 8. All three of my browsers, IE 7, Chrome and Firefox are having the same problems. Pages are not being loaded and are hanging on “waiting for …”. The browsers are waiting for the page being loaded or ad servers. Sometimes a page will load but the loading graphic continues to be displayed as if the page were still loading when the page appears to be fully loaded. The problem is bad enough that I can’t really use any of my browsers. I can eventually get most pages to load by stopping and restarting the page load. I have DSL modem with a wireless router and I have been able to eliminate the modem and router from being the source of my problem. My laptop doesn’t have any problems even when hardwired to the router and with the wireless connection disabled. I deleted the NIC and let XP re-install. Also tried a different network cable. Tried the same router port used in the laptop test. One clue that may be important is that I can’t connect to my router using the desktop machine…the page hangs while trying to connect. I can ping the router and I can quickly connect to the router using the laptop. I also can’t use the Windows update process – the page never fully loads. The problem affects other user accounts and even happens in safe mode. I am convinced the problem is with part of the O/S…some layer able to affect all of the browsers. The purpose of this post is to see if anyone has some ideas before I do a XP repair. I have done quite a bit of trouble-shooting: Ran a full anti-virus scan with AVG – no problems. Ran full scans with Spybot, MalwareBytes and Sophos anti-rootkit – no problems. Ran Chkdsk with both options checked. Ran Disk Clean up Defragged RE-installed IE7 Cleared all the browser caches Ran Ccleaner (registry tool) Ran HijackThis – nothing unusual (problem happens in safe mode too) Ran Process Explorer – no unusual processes Used System Restore and fell back several days – no change in the problem Booted to last known good configuration – no change in the problem Ran MicrosoftFixit50199.msi – no change in the problem Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated…I’m not looking forward to doing a repair on XP. • nvidia twinview in ubuntu with large resolutions not working

  i bought an external monitor and can't get it to work properly with my laptop screen. my laptop screen has a resolution of 1920x1200 and the new monitor has 1920x1080 when i open nvidia-settings and select the maximum resolution for each of the screen, one screen will always stay blank. if i select a smaller resolution for one of the two it will work. 1920x1200 + 1440x900 = works 1680x1050 + 1920x1080 = works 1920x1200 + 1920x1080 = doesn't work (but that's what i want to have!) my graphics card is an 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Quadro FX 360M (rev a1) (output from lspci), driver is proprietary nvidia driver, operating system is ubuntu. any help greatly apreciated

• Notification if SyncToy fails

  I support a number of laptop users. In the past (before there were many laptops), each user's computer was set up so that their My Documents folder was mapped to a shared folder on the server. This worked very well for desktops, but has several obvious downsides for laptops (no files when you're off-site, etc). I'm exploring several alternatives for laptops to better map the shared drives, and SyncToy seems the best so far. I have a couple trial users set up so that it syncs automatically whenever they log in, along with a desktop icon they can click if they know they'll need something saved before the next login. My problem is that I'm concerned how I, as the maintainer of this system, can spot failures. I don't want my first indication of a problem to come after a user drops their laptop in a lake and it turns out nothing was synced for the last year. Any ideas?

  Work at a school and we've got a scenario. We block F8 on all computers so students cannot access Safe Mode to bypass Group Policy... But students are logging into their accounts using AD, and they are turning them off half way through. Then they are claiming that when they login next time, they have Local Administrator accounts. Is this right, but we have blocked F8 and Startup repair, so wondering how they actually did it. Cheers Richard

  I have a laptop with ubuntu 9.10 which fails to start, and I want to copy the data from it to an external hard disk. I can login in recovery mode command line, but then I cannot mount the external hard drive. (in recovery mode I cannot write to the laptops hard drive) If I boot from an portable USB with mintlinux, I can mount the external harddrive, and copy most of the data from the laptop, however there is a dir which I have no rights to access under /home/user/Documents then I get a permission denied error. Are there any other options?

• Using Folder Redirection GPO and Offline Files and Folders

  I want to use Folder Redirection to redirect user's My Documents to a network share. First question is: What is best practices for mapping the drive? Should I use the profile tab in AD with the %username% variable, or a net use logon script, or something else? Second question is: How do I deal with laptops and syncing the network with the local storage? I want to have 2-way syncing so if they manually map their networked home drive and edit it from a different computer, it will sync the newer version to their My Documents folder the next time they connect their normal work computer. I also want to be sure that if they edit a file offline on their laptop while away from the office, that the network version syncs the changes the next time they connect that laptop. Please advise best practices for this scenario in a 2008 R2/Win7 environment. I am also interested in Mac clients for this environment, and while I am very Mac savvy, I would like to hear what others consider to be best practices for Mac network homedirs in a Win environment.

• Filesystem to quickly get recent modifications

  Hello, I've got relatively big filesystem (ext4) with lots of small files and I'd like to backup it. Making full backups often is not feasible to me so I want to have a way to make differential/incremental backups (differential preferred). But... this is laptop, and scanning for changed files takes lots of time. My questions: 1) Is it possible to get list of files changed since some date from ext4's journal? I know it wasn't designed with this idea in mind, and it might be too small for bigger timespans, but maybe it is somehow possible? 2) Is it possible to monitor filesystem modifications and maintain a list of changed files reliably? I think I could use inotify, but this might be too slow to monitor full filesystem and might be unreliable. (by reliable I mean either I get all modifications since last backup (and this list is not missing anything) or an error message). Laptop runs Debian unstable.

• Missing disk space in Windows XP

  On my mother's Lenovo laptop, Windows XP claims that the hard drive is almost full. According to the properties window, 52.7 out of 55.2 GB is in use: By deleting temp files from Internet Explorer, System Restore, Recycle bin, Windows Update, System Cleanup, I managed to free up about one GB. That's still 50 GB in use, which still is a lot more than I expected. Hence, I gave good old WinDirStat a spin, and here's the output: It might be hard to read here, but the first line says that the total amount of disk space in use on drive C is 24.3 GB. So Windows claims usage of 52.7 GB and WinDirStat can only account for 24.3 GB. Where is the other half of that disk space being used? I hope someone has an answer, or some tricks or tips to do further research. UPDATE: The laptop in question has an SSD hard drive. I am aware that these disk (at least the earlier ones) have a limited life-time. Could the symptoms described be caused by wear and tear on the SSD?

  We have 5 different laptops in the house, 1 macbook, 1 Compaq, 3 dells, plus numerous little devices like ipods, squeezeboxs, squeezebox radios and controllers, you name it. All of them connect to and stay connected to the "downstairs" WIFI just fine. But my laptop (the most expensive of the lot) refuses to stay connected, preferring the much weaker and slower signal upstairs.   Hi, I have a phone landline connection and I DO NOT have a phone instrument. I connect the cable into my laptop, and want to make calls using my laptop. I have an HDA CX20561 modem. • How to show disconnect network drives

  Windows 7 and Vista laptops in my company domain has network drives set up by Win2k8 Server GPO. Normally, when the laptops has ethernet cable plugged in before boot, the network drives connect and appear as expected at the end of startup sequence. However, when the laptop has ethernet cable unplugged, the network drives are not connected, which is fine, but the disconnected icons disappear as well. i.e. the drives are not set up. At the end of the startup sequence, upon reaching desktop, the wireless adapters will connect to the network and the laptop will be able to find the network drive. Hence I want the drives to be setup nonetheless, so that the next attempt to connect, say, via a desktop shortcut, will reestablish the network drive connection. How can this be done?

  I have a Toshiba M200 laptop which came with Windows Vista. After buying it, I replaced the OS with XP and recently I swapped the internal hard disk with a bigger one where I only have Ubuntu. So now I can boot XP from the external USB hard disk. There's a BIOS update available (2.3 against my 1.8) which I'd like to install and there's also a version for XP. • Intel site says VT-x is supported on my CPU, but tests say otherwise

  I have a laptop with an Intel 2nd Gen. i7-2729QM (http://ark.intel.com/products/50067/) and the Intel site says that it supports VT-x, but I've downloaded the Intel Processor Identification Utility (http://www.intel.com/support/processors/tools/piu/sb/CS-014921.htm) and the test says that my CPU does not have VT-x. There is no option in my BIOS that allows me to enable/disable VT-x. I researched my laptop model (SAGER NP8170) and most forums say that it's enabled by default and there's no option in the BIOS. So assuming that's true, what gives? I also downloaded another tool called SecurAble from GRC and it also says that my CPU doesn't support VT-x. VirtualBox also says that my CPU does not support virtualization. My mind is boggled by why it says on the Intel site that my CPU supports VT-x but all other tests show otherwise. Anyone know what's going on? Thanks in advance.
