• Ubuntu: move logs from /dev/tty8 to different terminal /dev/tty12 or get rid of it.

  I want to know how to move or get rid of /dev/tty8 log output in Ubuntu 9.10. /dev/tty7 is my regular X session. When I am switching user to test account where I can try and test setups and configs I am at next available console i.e. /dev/tty9 because /dev/tty8 is taken by log output. Where can I configure this ? All I've found related to /dev/tty8 is commented lines in /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf. I changed it like that: daemon,mail.*;\ news.=crit;news.=err;news.=notice;\ *.=debug;*.=info;\ *.=notice;*.=warn /dev/tty12 And I've got nice log output on /dev/tty12 but where is configuration for log output on /dev/tty8. How can I change it?

• gnu coreutils split verbose flushed?

  When using the GNU coreutils split command with verbose mode, how can I make the lines that appear in the STDOUT be flushed with respect to the time when the file has finally been created? Fore example, running it like this: ~/coreutils/bin/split --verbose -d -u -l 10000000 1>out & tail -f out creating file `x00' creating file `x01' creating file `x02' [...] I would have expected the line creating file 'x00' to have appeared in file out after the file has been completely written, but instead, it seems like nothing is written into out until the whole file has been finally processed. Is there a way to change this behavior?

• Safari proxy bypass for IPv6

  I'm a first-time n00b on Mac (but have been doing computers since before PC's). This Mac has 2 VLANs, vlan0 in IPv4, vlan1 in IPv6. Safari can surf via IPv4 squid proxy OK. Safari can surf via IPv6 natively, if I switch off the proxy. How do I set up the Settings - Network - Interface - Advanced - Proxies to "bypass" IPv6? Current Settings include variations along the lines of ... "*.local, 10.0.0.0/8, 192.168.0.0/16, 172.16.0.0/12 , ::, ipv6 " but don't work as expected. I want Safari to go out on its own with IPv6, not crash at the proxy with "malformed URL" Thanks, //rhi

• Creating Arrows Easily for Images

  I'm looking for a plugin or something along those lines for creating arrows for an image I'm working on. Basically it's just a screenshot of some software, but I want to annotate it and have arrows on it pointing to the various components. It should look something like this or even something simpler. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be an easy, free way of creating good arrows for any of the screenshots, short of importing actual images of arrows! I prefer to use: GIMP Paint.NET Other free software (beer or freedom, whichever) What are my alternatives? I really want to stay away from Photoshop on this. Thanks.

  Do you place any limits on the size of Apache log files - access.log and error.log? Specifically, can you give: Reasons to limit log file sizes Disk space Any other? Reasons NOT to limit log file sizes Research into performance issues or security breaches Any other? Methods of doing so Cron job that periodically deletes the file, or the first N lines? Any other? Anything you might salvage before deleting For example, grep out how many times a file was downloaded before deleting the access logs I'd like get the thoughts of experienced sysadmins before I do anything. • PHP file gets download instead of getting executed when browsed in any browser

  I have a phpinfo.php file which I am trying to run by browsing to it using browser but the browser downloads the file instead of executing it. phpinfo.php <?php phpinfo(); ?> I followed following this post, added following lines to my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf and restarted apache but invain. phpinfo.php still gets downloaded. AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps Have I added these line to the correct file? On an openSuSE forum following was mentioned. I followed this too but still no success. Same problem is persisting. In case the browser wants to save your php files instead of displaying the content, you should enable php support in the /etc/apache2/mod_userdir.conf file. Add the following line to it, just after the line and restart the server. Include /etc/apache2/conf.d/php5.conf

• 'Object variable or With block variable not set' error when setting a range in VBA

  I have a function that creates a Pivot Table, but I am getting an error when I try to set a range that will be merged and have a title added to it. In the below code, pivot_title_range is a 'String' variable, and is optional when calling the funtion. title_range is a 'Range' variable. Both lines that set the range (whether or not the users declares pivot_title_range) cause the same error. The net effect here would be similar to the access they would have if they hosted their email through Exchange but the business is too small to make this a feasible option. They are currently hosted through GoDaddy. I have not investigated it myself personally but apparently GoDaddy can do something along these lines for all incoming email but not for outgoing email. Is there a way to set up email accounts for a particular domain to where a specified admin user could be copied on all outgoing email?

• Mozilla Thunderbird new emails indication colour

  I've recently upgraded Mozilla Thunderbird to v3 on Winodws XP. In v2 I think when new (Pop 3) emails were downloaded, there were a little star icon next to my local folders where it's filtered to as to indicate new emails. In v3, it seems they've changed it to use different colour to highlight the folder instead. Whereas folders with existing unread emails are highlighted in bold black, folders with new unread emails are highlighted in this light grey greenish colour that's really hard to see. Can anyone please tell me how to modify the colour? I'm guessing it's either some lines in a userChrome.css file, or modifying a field in the config editor. Thanks. :)

• Is there a sensible way of 'teaming' two ADSL connections?

  I work in an office complex that has two seperate ADSL connections, which they use to provide two seperate networks (actually both the ADSL routers go into a Cisco managed switch with two VLANs, one for each ADSL connection). Circumstances have changed so that 95% of the users are all on one ADSL connection. It would be great if there were a way to join together both connections to emulate a single connection at double the speed, but the ISP doesn't support bonding. So, is there a sensible way to take two completely seperate ADSL lines and use them to provide a single internet gateway?

  We are actively using the Follow Up mail feature to assign users to particular mail follow up items. Although mail item follow ups are generally the province of the individual user, by changing the flag value from "Follow Up" to "User name", we can see each other's follow up tasks and group on responsible party. Currently we accomplish the Flag value change manually. My sense is the easiest way to perfect the process is a separate macro for each user. Along the lines of the macro to change the star/end due date to end of month, please define the macro to re-assign the Flag value for each highlighted mail item (previously assigned by default). • Open and scroll through 42 GB text file in Mac OS X

  I am running Mac OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion) and I am trying to open and scroll through a 42 GB .XML file. I plan on using an XML parser to parse through it and delete parts, but first I need to know how the document is structured so I can know what parts to save. How can I open this text / XML file and scroll through it so I can get a glimpse of its structure? I tried my default text-editor, text-mate, and that couldn't open it. I tried gEdit and that shows the first 10 or so lines, but then quits after trying to load the rest. I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions!

• How to configure sudoers with path wildcards?

  I need sudo for a command for any path under a particular area. Example: sudo mycommand /opt/apps/myapp/... What is the sudoers syntax to allow this command to run in any path that falls under /opt/apps/myapp? This is Solaris 10 sudo. Thank you for your reply, but I don't need wildcards for the path to the commands, but wildcards for the arguments for the commands. For example, we want to do something like... sudo mycmd /opt/userarea/area1 sudo mycmd /opt/userarea/area1/area2 sudo mycmd /opt/userarea/area1/area2/area3 So far, using wildcards for the arguments in sudoers look like this: /opt/userarea/* /opt/userarea/*/* And it seems like if we want to have N levels of directories, then we need N lines in sudoers! Is there a better way to include all N levels in one line in sudoers? Thanks.

• RabbitMQ message broker unable to open unused port 61613

  On a Windows Vista system, RabbitMQ fails to open port 61613 which is not used (as netstat and TCPView show). The server log indicates that it is possible to bind port 5672, but the next lines show the problem with port 61613. I have cleared all firewall settings and rebooted. Several times in the past this helped to solve the problem. • How to stop basic Postfix after-queue script from BCC-ing sender?

  I'm building a content filter for Postfix (2.9.3 package installed via apt on an Ubuntu 12.04 test VM) and I'm starting with a very basic Ruby (1.9.3) template and building up functionality. Strangely, when the script is enabled, messages sent are being forwarded on as normal, but also sent back to the sender which is not normal. Disabling the script disables this behavior. Any suggestions about what I have to change to stop that from happening? • setting up Ubuntu 10.10 as paravirtualized guest in Xen on RHEL5 host - what kernel?

  I've discovered the tool ubuntu-vm-builder, which I've installed and then invoked on an Ubuntu workstation as: sudo vmbuilder xen ubuntu --suite maverick --flavour virtual --arch amd64 --mem=512 --rootsize 8192 This workstation is not the intended target host of the virtual machine, however; I would like to host the guest on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 machine that is running Xen 3.0.3. The output of this command appears to be a folder named ubuntu-xen containing three files: tmpXXXXXX, a very large file which I assume is the root partition image tmpYYYYYY, a somewhat large file which I assume is the swap partition image xen.conf, a text file I have copied the xen.conf file to the RHEL server's /etc/xen directory under the new name newvm, adjusting the paths of tempXXXXXX and tempYYYYYYin the file after also copying them from my local workstation to the RHEL server. When I launch the Virtual Machine Manager virt-manager, I can see the newvm virtual machine listed underneath the Dom0 machine. When I try to start newvm, I get the error: Error starting domain: virDomainCreate() failed POST operation failed: (xend.err 'Error creating domain: Kernel image does not exist: None') Indeed, there exists an entry kernel = 'None' in the xen.conf file. How do I find out what the path of the kernel should be? Is this path supposed to be to a kernel stored on the local filesystem of the RHEL5 host, or is it supposed to be a path inside the guest image? I see that the vmbuilder command provides for a --xen-kernel option, along with a --xen-ramdisk option, but I'm not sure what to use for either. I think I should be able to get this to work, since Ubuntu is said to be supported as a Xen guest, even though the Xen 4.0.1 docs state support for only a limited set of distributions, Ubuntu excluded. Update 1 When running vmbuilder on my local workstation, I did observe an output line saying: Calling hook: install_kernel and later, output lines saying: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-23-virtual [...] run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools 2.6.35-23-virtual /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-23-virtual So in the xen.conf file, I tried setting the lines: kernel = '/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-23-virtual' ramdisk = '/boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-23-virtual' When trying to start the VM, I got an error similar to last time: Error starting domain: virDomainCreate() failed POST operation failed: (xend.err 'Error creating domain: Kernel image does not exist: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-23-virtual') This makes me think that the RHEL5 machine is looking for local files, rather than a file within the binary guest disk image. After running sudo updatedb on my workstation, neither of those files were found. If the vmbuilder tool had tried to install them, it must have failed. Update 2 I was able to extract the kernel and initrd images from the guest disk binary by mounting it: mkdir mnt_tmp sudo mount ubuntu-xen/tmpXXXXXX mnt_tmp/ -o loop cp mnt_tmp/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-23-virtual virtual_kernel_ubuntu cp mnt_tmp/boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-23-virtual virtual_initrd_ubuntu These two files I copied to the RHEL5 server, and edited the xen.conf file to point to them as kernel and ramdisk. With this done, I could "run" the newvm virtual machine from within virt-manager, but was met with the message Console Not Configured For Guest when I double clicked the entry to open the Virtual Machine Console. • What is a good tool to scan a FTP directory and show disk usage visually ala KDirStat/WinDirStat?

  Is there a tool that can scan an FTP directory and build a visual representation of disk usage? I'm running on Windows so that platform is my preference for this tool, but a *NIX tool would also be useful. I'm thinking along the lines of WinDirStat, KDirStat and TreeSize. At first I thought WinDirStat might be able to scan an FTP directory, but it was not so. FOSS is a plus, but not a requirement (I'm not against paying for good software). I'd like to also have a simple report on how many of what types of files are present, largest files, etc. Much like the simple file type reporting in *DirStat.

• Setting a Static IP Running FreeBSD8 in VirtualBox hosted on Windows 7

  I'm using VirtualBox on Windows 7 (host) to run a FreeBSD (guest) based web server. I`ve assigned a static ip of 192.168.80. 1 to the (virtualized) NIC which is run in bridged mode. The problem is that when I ping an external server (such as google.com) I get a No route to host error: dimetro# ping google.com PING google.com (66.249.90.104): 56 data bytes ping: sendto: No route to host ... I can ping the BSD server from both another virtualized machine and my host machine and from the server, I can ping everything on the network. The router ip is 192.168.1.1/16. ADDENDUM: I have the following lines in /etc/rc.conf on the BSD VM to configure networking: defaultrouter="192.168.1.1" ifconfig_em0="inet 192.168.80.1 netmask 255.255.0.0"

  I am using nxlog to tail a custom log file on one of my Windows servers. • How to avoid printing nearly blank pages?

  How many times have you printed an email just to have the last page be 2 or 3 lines of a person's signature (or worse, the "This is confidential" copy inserted by corporate mailservers)? How many times has the last page contained just the footer of the website? Does anyone know of a utility or print driver that can help avoid printing blank or nearly-blank pages? I am not looking for techniques for avoiding this in specific programs -- if I take the effort of doing print preview and then adjusting the pages to be printed, then of course I can avoid it. What I want something I can install that, whenever I push "Print" to any of the various printers I print to with my laptop, it automatically says "hmmm... I bet he doesn't really want that page which is 95% empty" and possibly prompts me to say "do you really want to waste paper on this?"
