• LInux (Ubuntu Karmic) equivalent to Pawsense

  I now work from a home office - much to the delight of my cats. One in particular likes to come for a hug several times a day. That in itself is fine but he tends to sit on my laptop keyboard whilst I'm working on my desktop and vice-versa. Also he'll walk across any keyboard I'm actually using at the time. I've found Pawsense and would like to know if anyone can suggest a Linux equivalent (or some incantations to achieve the same). Training him out of sitting on the keyboard is likely to prove fruitless (a suggested here). He's far more pig-headed than I am. This conversation discusses some utilities like xlock et al but I'd prefer if possible to have something more along the lines of Pawsense that doesn't lock the keyboard but "simply" intercepts cat-like typing. • Macro is not Cooperating with Quotations in Excel VBA

  I Have a macro containing a line that will change the formula of a cell using R1C1 formula type. The formula is: ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = _ "=IF(R[0]C[-2]=0,"",(R[0]C[-20]-R[0]C[-16]))" When ever I attempt to run the macro it always comes up with a dialog box saying Run-time error '1004': Application-defined or object-defined error. And when you click debug it highlights those 2 lines in the macro. And I can't figure out how to fix it. Can anyone help?

• Getting the general log to work in MySQL 5.6.8

  I can't get the general log to work in this version of MySQL. I added the following lines to /usr/my.cnf: general_log = 1 general_log_file = "/var/log/mysql.log" Then restarted the server: [root@localhost ~]# service mysql restart Shutting down MySQL.. SUCCESS! • telnet - is there a maximum line limit?

  I am working on several servers that use HTTP for transport of commands. What I have encountered is that some of the commands I am trying to issue by hand are very long GETs, several lines, and that when I telnet from my Mac to my Solaris system, I cannot seem to cut and paste the line successfully. I get a couple bounching sounds (which I assume is a control-g - bell) and then it never pastes everything. From trying to break it up into smaller pieces, I am getting the impression that TELNET, or my bundled telnet client or server has a maximum line length that I had never bumped into. I did some googling and superusering, but did not find anything definitive.

• Apache: How can I make my localhost on 192.168.1.101 visible from 192.168.1.102?

  Hi, I've setup a Apache web server on Ubuntu Linux. I can see http://localhost well. But I can't see localhost from other machines in my network using IP address: http://192.168.1.101 I added the lines below to my apache conf: `Allow from 192.168.1` but it did not work. It says "the connection has timed out". what should i do? • Enable Ctrl (or Alt) + arrow keys to mimic 'home' and 'end' functionality

  I am a long time Mac user and I'm now using a Ubuntu machine for development, and while I'm more or less used to a lot of the keyboard shortcuts, one thing I can't get used to is using the 'Home' and 'End' keys to move around lines of text. On a Mac you use "Command + right arrow" to go to the end of a line and "Command + left arrow" to go to the beginning. Is there a way to enable this kind of functionality in Linux? I'm not sure if this would be considered remapping, keyboard shortcuts, or what...

• ATI Radeon Drivers works with which linux distribution and version?

  I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. Almost every new linux distribution seems to have an issue with it, when i install the drivers. Working without utilizing the graphics card leaves me so unproductive. So i made a plan to use older versions of linux, any distribution suitable as a desktop distribution. UPDATE: The kind of problems that i am facing are, 1) After installing drivers the system boots and hangs, 2) There are unusual lines over the screen 3) After upgrade system doesn't start properly(hangs the usual old way) The kind of answers i am looking for is, distribution X(the newer the version the better) doesn't have the above problem after installing drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card.   Im creating a script that i am executing every night at 03.00 that will kill all screens that has been running longer than 3 weeks. anyone done anything similar that can help? If you got a script or suggestion to a better method please help by posting :) I was thinking maybe somthing like this. First do a dump to textfile ps -U username -ef | grep SCREEN dump.txt then do a loop running through all lines of dump.txt with a regex and putting pid of the prosseses with STIME 3weeksago in a array. then do a kill loop on the array result.

• Should I limit end-user gigabit ports to avoid saturating uplink/trunk connections?

  We have a campus with 16 buildings and older 850nm 1Gbps fiber links between the buildings, that all come to a core switch for our servers that also uses 1Gbps ports. We're finally starting to replace our aging 10/100 end-user switches, and much of what we're looking at are 1 Gbps units. My question is, since the trunk/uplink lines are still 1Gbps, if I were to install 1 Gbps switches for end users, should I limit the ports to 100Mbps until I can also upgrade the trunks to avoid allowing a bad-behaving host to saturate a trunk line (since we're a college, we have plenty of mis-behaving hosts) and thereby create a DoS situation for a building, or will TCP congestion control typically take care of that for me? What if we have a lot of UDP traffic (games, video chats, even a small amount of bittorrent)?

It is pretty straightforward to use argdo to search args files for a pattern and replace it while suppressing errors and requiring confirmation. :argdo %s/pattern/replace/gec | update However, I would like to delete entire lines that contain the pattern. • Using 64 bit wuauclt from 32 bit command prompt

  I have a script that for legacy reasons needs to run inside a 32 bit command shell. This script also includes references to certain core windows binaries - most notably wuauclt but others as well - which are not accessible by default within the 32 bit environment. This script is being run in several locations including many windows 7 and server 2008 r2 boxes. I'm aware of the possibility to copy files from the system32 to syswow64 in order to get around this. Is there any better method - something along the lines of adding an entry to the path variable - which will allow me to fall back to these 64 bit binaries from within a 32 bit script?

In N++, I constantly rely on block edit (or "column mode"), as it is a great increase in productivity: I can select a rectangular area of text by pressing ALT before marking with the mouse, and copy, move, paste the rectangular area anywhere. Also, it is possible to drag the cursor vertically so that I can type simulatenously on several subsequent lines at the same time. Is there any similar functionality for vi? If yes, how can I do that?

  Hi, Is it possible to split a large file into smaller files on Windows 2003 using a tool provided/supported/sanctioned by Microsoft? I see that there are a lot of freeware tools (various zip tools) for this task, but I need to move files off of a production server, thus would like to avoid tools I don't know if I can trust. I would much prefer some tool included in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools or something along those lines. Does such a tool exist? Thank you.

• Please help to troubleshoot the issue with Inspiron 8600 laptop

  Hello! I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop which display stopped working all of the sudden. It started to show a purple fog pattern along with some color vertical lines. I talked to Dell support and they told me that is a screen gone bad and I should get a new one which I did. But surprisingly the new display won't work either! The pattern on the screen is different but still no picture. So I tried to connect the old display to another laptop (Lenovo Z61) and it turns out it works just fine with it! So please help me to identify the cause of the issue. I think it could be a video card but the external display works flawlessly. I appreciate your thoughts about it so I won't need to buy spares which I don't need. Thank you! P.S. Please do not suggest to contact Dell support again.

• Regular Expression to replace part of URL in XML file

  I need a regular expression in Notepad++ to search/replace a string. My document (xml) has serveral thousand lines that look similar to this: <Url Source="Output/username/project/Content/Volume1VolumeName/TopicFileName.htm" /> I need to replace everything starting from Volume1 to .htm" / to replaced with X's or some other character to mask the actual file names in this file. So the resulting string would look like this after the search/replace was performed: <Url Source="Output/username/project/Content/Volume1XxxxxxXxxx/XxxxxXxxxXxxx.htm" /> I am working with confidential information that I cannot release to people outside of my company, but i need to send an example log file to a 3rd party for troubleshooting purposes. FYI the X's do not need to follow the upper/lower case after the replacement, i was just using different case X's for the hell of it :)

• Warning in Apache log: Cannot get media type from 'x-mapp-php5'

  I have no idea what is causing this issue, but it seems to be related to the displayed file (just a simple index.php to print phpinfo) being in an aliased directory. Any suggestions what I can do to avoid the warning? Here's an excerpt from my httpd.conf: <Directory "<dir with broken php>"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks ExecCGI Includes AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> Alias /smartersoftware/ "<broken dir>" <FilesMatch \.php$> SetHandler application/x-httpd-php </FilesMatch> The last three lines were required to make php work at all (which I found a bit strange, and it may or may not be related to my problem). Adding a AddType application/x-mapp-php5 .php didn't change anything.

  I use phpMyAdmin to manage all of my MySQL databases and SQL Management Studio Express to manage my MS SQL databases. Now I need to start working with Firebird, and I'm looking for a tool along the lines of SQL Management Studio to manage those databases as well. I can be flexible with the UI and can learn a new system, so if there's something freely available that will do the trick but isn't quite the same as SQL management Studio I think I could adapt. Bottom line: What free tools are available that provide an in-depth GUI for Firebird?

• MS Outlook Voting mismatch

  I did send out an Outlook vote to hundreds of employees, using their email address (which is mostly [email protected], but there are many exceptions). The incoming votes are not matched against the email address, but against the display name. Unfortunately, the display name has no real standard either. So instead of seeing this: [email protected] Voted: Yes [email protected] Voted: No I see this: [email protected] [email protected] Doe, Johnathan Philip Voted: Yes Doe - Peeters, Marian Voted: No In the actual list I see the addresses that I sent the vote to PLUS extra lines with the votes that came back. Is there a quick way to match my "send" list with the "received" list? One thing I thought of was to dump the global address book in a file and in Excel use =vlookup. But that seems a lot of work (and I am not even sure that I have the authorization to dump the address book).

But I want to modify this behavior and keep www.mydomain.com acessing the /var/www/mysite/portal/ folder on background while www.mydomain.com/abc/ still acessing the /var/www/mysite/abc/ folder as before.
