• How do I extend a WPF application using an addin-like architeture?

  Lets say I have a WPF application that shows a ListBox with an ArrayList -populated with objects of arbitrary types- as a source, and this application is hosted in an assembly 'A'. By default the ListBox will display the custom object 'ToString' method return value. If a data template for that object type is found, the ListBox will use it for rendering. Imagine that theres another assembly 'B' that references of 'A' and seeks to extend it by providing custom data templates for certain types, to be used in that ListBox. Is there some way to do that without 'A'being aware of B?

  I have two table testa & testb. The query is retreiving acurate result but it is taking minimum 30 seconds to execute which is too much. I have also tried to optimise my query using UNION but failed to do so. SELECT a.id, a.name, b.name, b.id FROM testb b INNER JOIN testa a ON b.aid1 = a.id OR b.aid2 = a.id OR b.aid3 = a.id ; How do i optimize my query so it's total execution time is within 2-3 seconds? • How to retrieve path for a file embedded in Resources (Resource Manager)

  I am trying to retrieve file path for a html file that is embedded in resource (resx file) in VS2008 C# project. I want to give path of this file to native webbrowser control (PIEHtml) to be able to navigate (DTM_NAVIGATE) in my application. I know I can pass the string to this control using DTM_ADDTEXTW but since html text size is so big, I dont want to pass string to the control. I need to somehow extract the file path for this html file embedded inside resource manager. I tried using but this does not give the file path of html inside assembly: private ResourceManager resManager = new ResourceManager("AppName.FolderName.FileName", System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); this.lbl.Text = resManager.GetString("StringInResources"); and also read Retrieving Resources in Satellite Assemblies but it did not solve my problem. I want to transfer update from a table in source database to a table in destination database (two tables are of the same schema, both of them are using a single column as unique primary key). The transfer rule is (in short, the rule is keeping the destination database the same as source database because of the update of the source database), if there is a new row in source database but not in destination database, insert the row in destination database; if a row not exists in source database but exists in destination database, delete the row in destination database; if a row's content (i.e. columns other than primary key columns) changes in source database, update the new content into destination database. thanks in advance, George

• Can MySQL reasonably perform queries on billions of rows?

  I am planning on storing scans from a mass spectrometer in a MySQL database and would like to know whether storing and analyzing this amount of data is remotely feasible. I know performance varies wildly depending on the environment, but I'm looking for the rough order of magnitude: will queries take 5 days or 5 milliseconds? Input format Each input file contains a single run of the spectrometer; each run is comprised of a set of scans, and each scan has an ordered array of datapoints. There is a bit of metadata, but the majority of the file is comprised of arrays 32- or 64-bit ints or floats. Proposed schema I'm planning on doing things "right" (i.e. normalizing the data like crazy) and so would have a runs table, a spectra table with a foreign key to runs, and a datapoints table with a foreign key to spectra. The 200 Billion datapoint question I am going to be analyzing across multiple spectra and possibly even multiple runs, resulting in queries which could touch millions of rows. Assuming I index everything properly (which is a topic for another question) and am not trying to shuffle hundreds of MiB across the network, is it remotely plausible for MySQL to handle this? UPDATE: additional info The scan data will be coming from files in the XML-based mzML format. The meat of this format is in the <binaryDataArrayList> elements where the data is stored. Each scan produces = 2 <binaryDataArray> elements which, taken together, form a 2-dimensional (or more) array of the form [[123.456, 234.567, ...], ...]. These data are write-once, so update performance and transaction safety are not concerns. In some cases with attatched debuger we can make impossible call, while without debugger we cannot catch any exception and application fastfails. It's just not the clr exception. There are memory acces vialation, reading zero pointer inside of internal code. Use case: You develop something like plugins system for your app. You read external assembly, find suitable method in some type, and execute it. And we just forgot about that we need to check up is the type generic or not. Under VS (and .net from 2.0 to 4.0) everything works fine. Called function does not uses static context of generic type and type parameters. But without VS application fails with no sound. We even cannot identify call stack attaching debuger. Tested with .net 4.0 The question is why VS catches but runtime do not?

• TFS 2010 build template failing to open in designer - how to fix?

  I can open the DefaultTemplate.xaml that was installed as part of our TFS 2010 RC setup. I created a copy of this template called ApplicationTemplate.xaml and modified it slightly, using the workflow designer in Visual Studio. Now, I can no longer open ApplicationTemplate.xaml. When I try, I receive many errors like the following: Error 2 Assembly 'Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Client' was not found. Verify that you are not missing an assembly reference. Also, verify that your project and all referenced assemblies have been built. C:\Projects\tfs\Hydraulics\BuildProcessTemplates\ApplicationTemplate.xaml 1 1828 Miscellaneous Files However, I can still open and edit the DefaultTemplate.xaml file without any issues. Has anyone else come across this problem, & if so, did you manage to resolve it or did you have to recreate the template?

  I'm trying to create a Django model that handles the following: An Item can have several Names. One of the Names for an Item is its primary Name, i.e. the Name displayed given an Item. (The model names were changed to protect the innocent.) My main questions are: How do I explain to the admin that primaryName needs to be one of the Names of the item being edited? Is there a way to automatically set primaryName to the first Name found, if primaryName is not set, since I'm using inline admin for the names?

  I am trying to deploy an application that uses SMO on a workstation without SQL Server installed on it. The instance the app is connecting to is SQL Server 2008. The application is failing with: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Replication, Version 10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845cdc8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. The assembly in question is in the same path as my application as well as system32. I am running this on a Windows 7 64 bit box. I have run SQL Native Client, CLR, and SMO MSIs from the 2008 SMO redist download page. This app worked fine when connecting to SQL Server 2005. What gives?

  I'm currently taking the MS SQL 2K5 Admin course at a local college and ran into a problem with the Log Shipping part. My setup is the following: Windows 7 x64 SQL 2005 SP3 2 SQL server instances on the same machine Log Shipping settings: Performed full then log back up of Primary Manually restore on Secondary in STANDBY MODE Insert a new record into the table Set up Log Shipping on Primary using SQL Authenication login to connect to the Secondary Set up timers and copy destination on Secondary Monitoring instance not being used I set up a shared folder for WORKGROUP so both instances on the machine can read & write to it. I can see transaction logs generated and copied as defined by the Transaction Shipping wizard. However, the specified table on the Secondary instance is not updating.

• CakePHP: How can I disable auto-increment on Model.id?

  CakePHP 1.3.0, mysqli I have a model, Manifest, whose ID should be the unique number from a printed form. However, with Manifest.id set as the primary key, CakePHP is helping me by setting up auto-increment on the field. Is there a way to flag the field via schema.php and/or elsewhere to disable auto-increment? I need just a plain, old primary key without it. The only other solution I can imagine is adding on a separate manifest number field and changing foreign keys in a half dozen other tables. A bit wasteful and not as intuitive.

• How do I properly register the Type Library of A VB.NET COM+ Component?

  I am looking to upgrade legacy VB6 COM+ components to VB.NET components. I have seemingly upgraded one already, called EventPackage, which has one class, IEventListener. Another, TradeOrders, Implements EventPackage.IEventListener. When attempting to build TradeOrders, I get the following Errors/Warnings; Cannot load type library for reference "EventPackage". Library not registered. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8002801D (TYPE_E_LIBNOTREGISTERED)) The referenced component 'EventPackage' could not be found. Type 'EventPackage.IEventListener' is not defined. In the .vbproj, I notice this reference <COMReference Include="EventPackage"> <Guid>{0D76C094-21A6-4E04-802B-6E539F7102D7}</Guid> <Lcid>0</Lcid> <VersionMajor>2</VersionMajor> <VersionMinor>0</VersionMinor> <WrapperTool>tlbimp</WrapperTool> </COMReference> When I search the registry for this Guid, I find nothing. When using GUIDs for similar COM+ objects, I find them in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{...}\TypeLib ("..." being the GUID of the other component). When I go to the registry key name corresponding to EventPackage.IEventListener, I find that there is no \TypeLib subkey. As you might suspect, searching the reg for "0D76C094-21A6-4E04-802B-6E539F7102D7" yields no results. So I know this must be a registry problem, But I have tried seemingly every google result I have found. I have tried Regasm and regsvcs .exe's to no avail. Many pages just tell me that dragging the dll to the COM+ manager should automatically register the component. So how do I register the Type library? Details on how I made EventPackage COM+ component Ran the VB6-VB.NET wizard Then I added some lines to the assemblyinfo.vb file added Imports System.EnterpriseServices added Imports System.EnterpriseServices Imports System.Data.SqlClient <Assembly: CLSCompliant(True)> <Assembly: AssemblyKeyFileAttribute("...")> for a strong name <Assembly: Guid("...")> (Where "..." is the COM+ CLSID of the old component) I added the following to the class file IEventListener.VB Imports System.EnterpriseServices <ComClass("...")> _ (Where ... is the proper COM+ CLSID, that is the only argument) Inherits ServicedComponent changed the ID made by the Conversion wizard to the proper value (from <System.Runtime.InteropServices.ProgId("IEventListener_NET.IEventListener)> to <System.Runtime.InteropServices.ProgId("EventPackage.IEventListener")> _ Then I dragged the DLL into the COM+ manager in the proper COM+ application (although, the "Path" is not specified and only says mscoree.dll)

• SvcUtil and /dconly generates XSD's for data types NOT marked with the DataContract attribute.

  Has anyone ever encountered a problem with Svcutil and the /dconly option where it generates metadata for EVERY data type in an Assembly, even if it is NOT marked with with the [DataContract()] attribute? It also appears to be generating metadata for types only referenced in the code, such as XmlDictionaryReaderQuotas even though these are not a part of the physical assembly that I generated metadata on. Some info: Using the .NET 4.0 version of SvcUtil. Does not matter if class is empty or not. No references are specified in the command line for SvcUtil.   I have a voting script which stores the post_id and the user_id in a table, to determine whether a particular user has already voted on a post and disallow them in the future. To do that, I am doing the following 3 queries. SELECT user_id, post_id from votes_table where postid=? AND user_id=? If that returns no rows, then: UPDATE post_table set votecount = votecount-1 where post_id = ? Then SELECT votecount from post where post_id=? To display the new votecount on the web page Any better way to do this? 3 queries are seriously slowing down the user's voting experience Edit In the votes table, vote_id is a primary key In the post table, post_id is a primary key. Any other suggestions to speed things up?

  I want to do: masked = image - mask But I want to "displace" mask. That is, move it vertically and horizontally (as long as the intersection between it and image is not empty, this would be valid). I have some hand-coded assembly (which uses MMX instructions) which does this, embedded in a C++ program, but it's unstable when doing vertical displacemente, so I thought of using OpenCV instead. Would it be possible to do this calling only one OpenCV function? Performance is critical; using OpenCV, time should be at least in the same order of magnitude as the assembly code.

And as a bonus, how would one implement the first example in PHP, given that 123 is the primary key of some row in a database table? (I just need to know how to retrieve 123 from the URL; I already know how to query the database for a primary key of 123.)

• VS2008 project with Entity Framework model results in "always dirty" compile

  In VS 2008, I have a simple .csproj that contains an Entity Framework .edmx (V1) file. Every time I build the project, the output DLL is updated, even though nothing has changed. I have reproduced this in the simplest-possible project (containing one ordinary .cs file and one edmx model). If I remove the edmx model and build repeatedly, the output assembly will not be touched. If I add the edmx model and build repeatedly, the output assembly is modified each time. This is a problem because the real project is a dependency of dozens of other projects and it is wreaking havoc with what times when working in higher layers of the application. Is this a known problem? Any way to fix it? Thanks!

I am wondering why even a single delete statement of this store procedure will cause deadlock if executed by multiple threads at the same time? For the delete statement, Param1 is a column of table FooTable, Param1 is a foreign key of another table (refers to another primary key clustered index column of the other table). There is no index on Param1 itself for table FooTable. • Xcode puts Default.png in my plist as an Icon file when I assign a Launch Image

  When I set a Launch Image, Xcode creates a copy as Default.png and creates an entry in my plist in Icon Files (IOS 5) / Primary Icon / Icon Items -- Item 1 : Default.png Item 0 : MyIcon.png is the app icon which I have already placed through the Target. The reason this is a problem is that the launch image then takes precedence over the actual icon and as a result, it shows as the primary icon instead of my actual icon image. Why is Xcode doing this? Can I safely delete the Default.png entry from my .plist? (this seems to fix the problem) Do I need to copy Default.png somewhere else? Thanks!
