  • Drawbacks of installing linux on usb stick?

    I am setting up a router/nas/http/whatever server based on an ION mini-ITX board. I've installed Ubuntu Server on an old 160 GB drive, but it generates a lot more heat and vibrates more than my other new drive (storage). It just doesn't fit the concept, and worse: it takes up a SATA port. As SSD's are crazy expensive I'm thinking of buying an extra 4 GB USB stick, and raid0 it. From my point of view, these are the pros/cons: Pros Low power consumption No vibrations No heat Smaller Get to buy new, larger USB stick (:D) Cons Shorter life time Slower Raid 0 More work maintaing/installing? I think the pros overweighs the cons. Shorter life time and raid 0 is countered by regular backups of the configs/settings. Slower is partially countered by raid 0, and I don't know about the last one. What do You think? Experience? Another solution?

  • fsck: FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED after each check with -c, why?

    Hi I use a script to partition and format CF cards (connected with a USB card writer) in an automated way. After the main process I check the card again with fsck. To check bad blocks I also tried the '-c' switch, but I always get a return value != 0 and the message "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED" (see below). I get the same result when checking the very same drive several times... Does anyone know why a) the file system is modified at all and b) why this seems to happen every time I check and not only in case of an error (like bad blocks)?   • Can I "reprogram" an American Express USB drive?

    I recently received a USB drive that looks like a credit card as a promotion. The drive portion flips out to plug it in. When you plug it in, it opens the run dialog, and opens a URL to an American Express web page. I was able to find it in the Device Manager: But I don't know what else to do? Is there a way I can convert this into a plain old USB drive? Or better yet, can I modify the command that it runs when inserted into a computer?

    Hi, Long story: My MacBook's hard drive failed one year ago, just a month after its warranty ended or: a year and a month after I bought it. After about ten phone calls to Apple's service, they agreed to extend the warranty for another year, so that I got it replaced free of charge. In the mean time, I got to know that many MacBook users that experience/report hard drive failures. Every reported crash was preceded by a slowdown of system performance, an increased occurrence of the spinning beach ball wait courser, and frequent crashes of applications that used to run very robust until then. It happened (as far as I know) with MacBooks from 2006/2007. All these MacBooks additionally suffer from a recurring wearing down of their "top case". Many heavy users had to replace their HDDs three time since 2006/2007 resulting in an head crash, making it impossible to recover data (diagnosis of recovery specialists) in most but not all cases HDD was Seagate (doesn't necessarily have to be the cause, if majority of the MacBook charge contained Seagate drives) And right now (one year after my first disk crash), these symptoms are cumulating on my system, again ... Short version: prevalent hard drive failure on MacBook charge from 2006/2007 (i.e. 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Due) I am looking for any (preferable open source) tool for checking the hard drive condition, especially to detect the known "MacBook problem". So, that I can replace the disk on time. If any Mac user found a solution to prevent the repeated failure of heir hard drive, I would be very glad to get to known it. I really enjoy my old MacBook, but I hate to get interrupted every year by an HDD crash. BTW, the issue is already in discussion for a long time, but there seems to be no solution, so far.   • Home server - HP Proliant Microserver - Software and setup - OS on USB stick?

    I've just purchased a HP ProLiant Microserver for home use. I want to set up with web server, samba shares, the usual stuff. My question is really about system setup. It has an internal USB socket so I've attempted to install a copy of Fedora 14 onto it. I turned off X/Gnome, but it still ran like a pig. I've now put the OS on one of the internal disks (250Gb, 7200rpm), but I was wondering if there was a way to utilise the internal USB to give me better power-saving allowing the hard drives to be shut down when not in use. How would you set this server up? I'd rather not go to the extra cost of an SSD right now, but if that's the best way then so be it.

    I have a SanDisk Cruser Blade USB stick that suddenly seems to be write protected. I tried running DiskPart but after I write the command "attributes disk clear readonly" it displays this: Microsoft DiskPart version 5.1.3565 ADD - Add a mirror to a simple volume. ACTIVE - Marks the current basic partition as an active boot partition. ASSIGN - Assign a drive letter or mount point to the selected volume. BREAK - Break a mirror set. CLEAN - Clear the configuration information, or all information, off the disk. CONVERT - Converts between different disk formats. CREATE - Create a volume or partition. DELETE - Delete an object. DETAIL - Provide details about an object. EXIT - Exit DiskPart EXTEND - Extend a volume. HELP - Prints a list of commands. IMPORT - Imports a disk group. LIST - Prints out a list of objects. INACTIVE - Marks the current basic partition as an inactive partition. ONLINE - Online a disk that is currently marked as offline. REM - Does nothing. Used to comment scripts. REMOVE - Remove a drive letter or mount point assignment. REPAIR - Repair a RAID-5 volume. RESCAN - Rescan the computer looking for disks and volumes. RETAIN - Place a retainer partition under a simple volume. SELECT - Move the focus to an object. It's like when you type help at the DiskPart prompt, so how do I get past this? This problem started when I plugged the stick into a laptop which had viruses, if that's any help.

But when I am trying to boot from that USB key I get the following error: "no bootable partition in table" It seems like USB key is not prepared properly ... How can I install gOS from USB key?

  • keepass not working with wine

    I installed Keepass 1.16 in my thumbdrive, which reportedly works with wine (as per Keepass homepage), but after entering the master password it just hangs and shows the "The program keepass has encountered a serious problem and needs to close" screen. I got this error msg among the stack trace on the terminal: wine: Call from 0x7b844633 to unimplemented function bcrypt.dll.BCryptOpenAlgorithmProvider, aborting On windows, everything runs fine. I'm using wine-1.1.27 on ubuntu 9.04 Any thoughts?

  • Practically expected transfer rates for sdhc class 6

    I went and bought an expensive SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 8GB class 6 chip. However when I dump data from the card to the machine via USB 2.0 cable, its only getting 5.0 MB/second maximum according to Windows 7 disk explorer. It still can take up to 20 minutes to dump the card when its near full. This is so far below the rated 20MB/s transfer speed I can't believe it. Is this normal or might I have a defective chip?

  • SD card mounted as bootable image instead of FAT 32

    I have an SD card that I recently used to take photos on vacation. It have taken a lot of photos using it and worked fine on the camera. However, I had forgotten that a few months before this trip, I tried to make the SD card a bootable Xubuntu USB drive. So when I plugged my SD card in to copy the photos, the card mounts as the Xubuntu image, rather than mounting as the FAT32 drive with the images on it. The files must still be on the drive. Any ideas on how to fix this? (I'm using Mac OS X) Thanks!

  • How to configure squid for retrieving (and caching) directly my static resources?

    I have an Apache/Tomcat/Spring tc Server running on CentOS EC2 VM. I would like to install squid on the same machine as a proxy for retrieving (directly i.e. without forwarding the request to Apache/Tomcat) and caching static content ONLY identified by URIs : /images, /css or /js. Other URIs should be forwarded to the normal Web Server and not cached. Since I am a newbie, I didn't find from squid documentation how to configure squid for this desired behavior (and if it is even possible). Could you please help me and tell me how should I configure squid for this purpose? Thank you.

  • Can Windows tell me what is using my USB drive?

    Being the good citizen I am, I left-click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in my taskbar, and select my USB drive to dismount. Then I get the message: Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later. Of course, being the Operating System, it knows exactly what applications are using my device. So why won't it tell me? As usual, I always end my Vista questions with this plea: anyone know a Microsoft Engineer I can kick?

    When I try to use an old app created using Macromedia Projector in Windows 7, it crashes after the first few screens. The same programs works fine on XP. I receive this error message after a few screens: Error A Fatal Error has occurred. Click OK to Quit. Pressing OK brings me a fresh one: Microsoft Visual C++ runtime Library This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. And finally I get a Macromedia Projector has stopped working message. I have already tried adjusting compatibility mode, or adding this program to the Data Execution Prevention exceptions, but none helped.

  • Boot time virus scan from USB drive

    I want to check for viruses on a computer that I suspect may be infected with malware. Its users are running an antivirus, but there's always the risk that something slips past and the way I see it, once the system is infected the antivirus is useless because the malware can hide itself from the AV. I think the best way to go (besides clean reinstall of the OS) would be to have an antivirus running at a boot time from a CD or a USB key. That way, the malware is just lying on the disk and cannot do any of its hide-and-seek stuff (provided the AV comes from an uninfected PC and all that). So, I'm looking for something that: Runs at boot time (off USB key or CD-ROM) Does not touch or require the local OS Discovers malware fairly well (like, Avast, AVG, Norton, whatever -- I think the're all the same anyway) Can handle Windows filesystems (FAT 32, NTFS, WinFS ;-) ) Comes from some sort of trusted source (no Windows Antivirus 2009) I know that this is no silver bullet (nothing is, really*), but I do have a feeling it's more likely to help than doing the scan* within the infected system.

  • Varnish + Tomcat vs Apache + mod_jk + Tomcat

    Does anyone have some comparison data in terms of performance for using in front of Tomcat either Varnish or Apache with mod_jk. I know that AJP connector suppose to be faster than HTTP, but I was thinking that in combination Varnish which is lighter and highly optimized could perform better. There is also the discussion between static resources (which I think will perform faster with Varnish than Apache, even with mod_cache) and dynamic pages.
