• Hyper-V can't connect from host to guest via RDC

  As the title describes I would like to connect via Remote Desktop Connection to my VM. I want to use it as a Dev-machine and therefore would like to work full screen, as far as I understand RDC is the way to go. I have created an internal network connection within Hyper-V, assigned it to my VM, set a static IP/Subnet on guest (Win7 Pro) and host(Win8.1 Enterprise). It worked good for the first couple of times but now it seems to be broken or I have to do odd enable/disable network connection "dances" to get it running. Ping also doesn't work always so it does seem as if the guest and host would be "disconnected".. Is there something I can do so that the network connection always will be established?

• How to verify /boot partition on encrypted LVM setup

  Isn't unencrypted /boot partition a weakness for encrypted LVM setup? Attacker may install a malware to /boot partition so that it may sniff encryption password next time system boots. It may also be done by a malware installed to Windows on dual-boot system without any physical access. Am I missing some protection scheme or at least I may verify that /boot contents didn't change since last system shutdown?

• OpenVPN and Squid Setup troubleshooting

  I am trying to setup squid to tunnel via openvpn so that I can just enter an Ip and port in my browser settings and use it as a US proxy. My server is a OpenVZ VM. Running into some issues: I setup openvpn using : http://safesrv.net/install-openvpn-on-centos/ as part of that guide I also ran: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o venet0 -j SNAT --to-source iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -j SNAT --to-source Installed squid using this guide: http://www.server-world.info/en/note?os=CentOS_6&p=squid from that guide changed acl lan src 10.0.0.0/24 to acl lan src 10.8.0.0/24 Next, I went to my browser proxy settings and put - 10.8.0.1 in the HTTP field. Put the port I had setup in the squid config file and tried to load a page. Nothing connecting. Any help? What am I doing wrong?

• Very small image for rebuilds

  I worked at a place last year that had a very small image for Windows XP re-builds. It was two Norton GHO files, totalling about 2-3 GB. This is how it worked: Boot into Norton Ghost Map to the network share where the images lived Apply the image to the workstation Reboot It would then load into Windows Setup Enter the Domain Admin credentials so it can join the domain That's it... it would then reboot into Windows and the image was complete. How did they make an image so small? Did they perhaps kick off a Windows install and create an image then? I particularly liked how it required no user input other than a domain admin login.

• Host PC can't see file-system on local VMWare VM

  I am running VMWare Workatation 8.0 on a Windows7 host, hosting a Windows7 VM. It's working fine except that the host cannot see the files on the VM when it's running. The VM is running locally on the host, not on the network. I found a page saying I simply need to share the folders on either side and the other can see them, but this isn't working. VMWare Workstation has a handy tool to share folders from the host drive to the VM, but I need the opposite - I have software installed on the host (for licensing reasons) which I need to use to work on files within the VM.

  We just moved from a 32-bit machine to a 64-bit machine. We have quickly ran out of memory despite the new boxes have twice as much ram as the old boxes.   I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 (dual-boot) on my laptop.For some reasons I want some more space in my Ubuntu partition.I have installed gParted in Ubuntu.Now is it recommended to get this required extra space from Windows 7 drive (*where my linux is installed *) directly using gParted? Will it cause damage to my boot loader or my data on the partition from where I wish to grab some space? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Kubuntu guest on Windows 8.1 Hyper-V won't shut down completely

  I've got a Windows 8.1 Professional laptop with Hyper-V installed, and a Kubuntu 14.04 Desktop VM. When I shutdown the Kubuntu VM, most of the time it gets to the logo screen, and just sits there. It's not frozen, because I can see the glow around the logo brighten and fade. I have installed the four Hyper-V modules, and lsmod shows them all running fine before the shutdown. Also, once it's stuck on the logo screen, if I send a CTL-ALT-DEL to the VM, it restarts immediately. Does anyone have any idea where I'd begin troubleshooting this? UPDATE: I've disabled the startup and shutdown screens, and now can see this output when it's stopped. Hopefully this sheds more light on the problem.

• Windows 8 will only recognize the Blu Ray ROM, if the install disk is present at boot time [migrated]

  If I have the install disk in the blu ray ROM drive at boot time and subsequently remove the disk and replace it with blu ray media everything functions as I'd expect. However, if I have no media present, or another disk in the drive at boot time, then windows 8 does not seem to recognize that the blu ray player is even present in the computer. It is not present in the 'my computer' screen, device manager does not show the player, and scanning for new hardware yields nothing. It seems that the driver is installed and working as expect, what is it about having the windows 8 install disk in the drive or not that would cause this kind of behavior?

  I'm running Ubuntu Desktop 12.04, and I was wondering if it was possible to somehow take my whole filesystem (everything under /) and create an ISO from it. Then, perhaps, use that ISO as the file system of a VBox VM (obviously, it would have to be Ubuntu, and probably 12.04). Basically, I've spent a lot of time configuring my development machine, but need to be able to work on it from whatever computer I happen to be at. VMs seem like the perfect solution. • San Disk Cruzer Glide 32 GB and 8Gb can't be copied to.

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 with a kernal of 3.0.0-17-generic (#30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 17:34:21 UT When I tried to copy files to a San Disk Cruzer 8gb usb drive, the copy process went a short way and then completely stopped. Although I have copied items to the USB drive from my PC before, this time the files would start quickly enough but always stop shortly after starting. I figure the 8 gb was bad, so I went and got a brand new 32 gb usb drive from a store, unpackaged it and plugged it in, still unable to copy to the usb drive. So is there some kind of incompatibility or issue where San Disk Cruzer Glides are no longer supporting it. Is there an obscure setting that I am missing? Any help would be appreciated

• Unable to connect to vrde virtualbox VM remotely

  So I've remotely created my first headless using ssh. Now I'm attempting to connect to this VM using RDP so I can install Ubuntu Server, but I cannot get connected at all. When starting the VM everything appears fine: $ vboxheadless -s WebTesting Oracle VM VirtualBox Headless Interface 4.0.16 (C) 2008-2012 Oracle Corporation All rights reserved. VRDE server is listening on port 4455. And showvminfo shows: VRDE: enabled (Address 0.0.0.0, Ports 4455, MultiConn: off, ReuseSingleConn: off, Authentication type: null) However I'm still prompted with the "enter your credentials" screen every time I attempt to connect. From reading the documentation null shouldn't prompt me with this screen at all... Any help with this is greatly appreciated. P.S. I am using ssh tunneling in putty to tunnel in to my network.

• FreeBSD Jail own network stack with vimage

  I want to throw all services from the host system and put them in jails. Unfortunatly this doesn't work for file sharing (e.g. nfsd) because the jails don't have there own network stack by default. I know read something about vimage which would solve this issue. See more in this thread: http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=9006 The use of vimage with raw jails should use moreorless but the use with vimage and ezjail makes it hard. Does anyone have experience about this topic and wants to share it? Regards

  I'm trying to connect a Solaris VM (powered by VMware Player) to Windows Explorer in Windows 7. When I try to map the network drive I get the following: The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. I am using the following URL which has worked on a machine I used before. The only thing that has changed is the IP address of the Solaris machine. • What about the performance enhancement when using an SSD as the main disk?

  I'm planning to buy a new PC and I am thinking about using an SSD as the main disk. I'd also use a standard spinning disk and I'd mount it to /home. To the people already using such a setup: does this induce a practical, noticeable enhancement in performance? I think that access times, rather than transfer rates, are the more useful feature of SSD's. I would like to know if they have a noticeable effect on a desktop installation of Ubuntu. • need help setting up a VPN for remote computer connection

  I am on a low budget right now. I am currently in the process of starting a computer company. I am in need of a VPN network so I can run Dameware tools for working on customers/partners computers remotely. I will be working with Windows and some Apple and linux machines. I have desktop with an AMD Phenom II 965BE(currently running stable at 3.8Ghz) processor with 8 GB of ram and a radeon hd 6870(i know graphics aren't too useful) and about 1.5TB of HDD space. I am attempting to create a network out of my office based all on one machine that would also be secure for me to remotely connect to my partners computers so when they have issues I would be able to connect and do the diagnosing and repairs remotely. What types of servers besides a VPN server would i need to create this? • Windows 7 Extend C Volume to Unallocated Space

  a while back I installed Ubuntu and then later uninstalled it by I think deleting the partitions and recovering the windows 7 boot loader. I am not that experienced with partitioning yet. As you can see here there are two partitions that are now unallocated. The 9gb one is a recovery or something that came with the computer. How can I extend my C partition to use both of those? I do not want to have that much storage just wasted sitting there. • Private subnet for VM server host-only network

  At my current job, we distribute a product based on a Linux server with multiple VMs defined (using KVM / libvirt). We are planning to expose limited ports to the customer's network, and use iptables to direct inbound traffic to the appropriate internal VM. My question: is there a class of private subnets that I can use for the internal host-only network that is least likely to conflict with a client IP subnet? Specifically, if I choose a /24 out of any of the RFC-1918 defined private subnets (such as 192.168.x.x), there is a chance of conflicting with a customer-used range. I noticed that several current VM implementations default to 192.168.122.x -- is this due to an RFC that I'm not familiar with, and therefore this is a safe range to use (that most network admins would avoid)? Or did the various VM vendors just pick that range randomly? I guess I'm looking for an IP range that is more private than the existing private (RFC1918) addresses. The only other thought I had was to use one of the "Test Net" IP ranges reserved for documentation purposes (RFC 5737). Note, that I'm not worried about a customer's network blocking these IPs, as this is only internal to our server (packets get NATted before leaving the box). However this does seem more unorthodox than just sticking with the default 192.168.122.x/24 subnet.

• Multiple desktops in Windows

  I'm running a program that uses WatiN to automate file uploads to different websites. I currently run it on a machine that I remote into via the standard Remote Desktop Connection in Windows - once I start an upload, I go ahead and continue using my local machine. Soon, I'll be needing to run it locally. The problem is that it requires focus (which is unavoidable due to WatiN utilizing SendKeys) and I of course don't want to render my machine useless while it runs. So, my question: Is there any way to emulate the multiple desktops/workspaces that have been in many Linux distros for some time? I tried VirtuaWin to no avail. Alternatively, is there a way to remote into a machine from itself? Or is there some other means of creating a separate session on the same machine that does not steal focus? Running Linux is not an option, and a VM would be overkill.
