Is this possible using html.checkbox or html.checkboxfor. one way is recommended in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/626901/asp-net-mvc-rc2-checkboxes-with-explicit-values. Is there any other better way i want to do this as ModelState.IsValid is returning false because of hidden field value attribute Regards

• Defend zero-based arrays

  A question asked here recently reminded me of a debate I had not long ago with a fellow programmer. Basically he argued that zero-based arrays should be replaced by one-based arrays since arrays being zero based is an implementation detail that originates from the way arrays and pointers and computer hardware work, but these sort of stuff should not be reflected in higher level languages. Now I am not really good at debating so I couldn't really offer any good reasons to stick with zero-based arrays other than they sort of feel like more appropriate. I am really interested in the opinions of other developers, so I sort of challenge you to come up with reasons to stick with zero-based arrays!

• Kohana or CodeIgniter?

  I'm looking for a PHP framework. I did a research here and found CodeIgniter would be best for me. But then I discovered that there is Kohana based on CodeIgniter. And I'm annoyed, because since Kohana is based on CodeIgniter, it should work similar, but it is optimized for PHP 5, so it should be faster in a PHP 5 environment. I was going to choose Kohana and then I found benchmarks that points CodeIgniter as the faster one. I don't understand it. If Kohana is updated more frequently and optimized for PHP 5, shouldn't it be better then? I'm experienced PHP programmer, but Smarty is the only framework I know, and I don't want to waste next few month for learning a bad framework. Thanks for your reply, I will give Kohana a try.

• Self Assesstment Tests for Programmers

  I want to help the Dev team identify areas of knowledge (practical and theoretical) that they can work on. Though I am big believer in focusing on people's strengths being a good programmer requires (I think) being challenged by concepts and ideas that don't always come naturally. We work largely in the web app space using PHP & MySQL but better skills in data modelling, query optimisation, use of MVC and OOP etc. would help the team and the company a lot. I want to help the Dev team manage their careers, explore and expand their skills sets. Be all they can be and better than they were previously. I know its an idealistic goal but work must be about more than simply getting the work done. There should be some time to review, to learn, to grow and get better. Any thoughts, ideas, opinions and directions to tests or similar resources would be greatly appreciated.

• What's the best version control system for handling projects with graphics?

  I'm part of a small team (usually just two people), I handle the code, he handles the graphic design. In the past I've used CVS to handle version control of the code files, and while we've included the graphics in the repository, he hasn't derived nearly as much value from it as I have. Are there other packages that provide the better features for supporting graphics? The system would need to have an easy to use GUI interface, as I don't think it's fair to expect a graphic designer to learn command-line tools. Additional aspect: The client software needs to run smoothly on OS X (for the designer), and Windows (for the programmer).

• NTDS Replication Warning (Event ID 2089)

  I have a simple little network with 3 AD servers in 2 sites. Site A has Win2k3 SP2 and Win2k SP4 servers, site B has a single Win2k3 SP2 server. All have been in place for at least 3 years now. Just last week I started getting Event 2089 "not backed up" warnings (example below) on both of the win2k3 servers. I understand what the message means, no need to send me links to the technet article explaining it. I'll improve my backups. What I'm more curious about is why did I just start getting this message now? Why haven't I been getting it for the past 3 years?!? Perhaps this is related: I recently decommissioned a few other sites and AD controllers (there used to be 3 more sites, each with their own controller). Don't worry, I did proper DCpromo exercises and made sure we didn't lose anything. But would shutting those down possibly be related to why I get this error now? This won't keep me awake at night but I am curious as to what changed...   Here's my candidate, just encountered, from an automated Java build. I just had to share it. "Composite step 'master' failed due to unsatisfication of success condition." In other words, it failed because it didn't succeed. Uh, thanks. I feel so much more ... what's the word I'm looking for here? Ah, enlightened. I think it would be fun to hear yours, and I'm sure you have plenty. I really enjoyed the best programmer jokes that appeared here earlier, so maybe this will bring a few smiles and lighten the load in a similar fashion. (I searched for something similar on SO, but didn't find anything.)

• Unpacking Argument Lists and Instantiating WTForms objects from web.py

  After a bit of searching, I've found that it's possible to instantiate a WTForms object in web.py using the following code: form = my_form(**web.input()) web.input() returns a "dictionary-like" web.storage object, but without the double asterisks WTForms will raise an exception: TypeError: formdata should be a multidict-type wrapper that supports the 'getlist' method From the Python documentation I understand that the two asterisks are used to unpack a dictionary of named arguments. That said, I'm still a bit confused about exactly what is going on. What makes the web.storage object returned by web.input() "dictionary-like" enough that it can be unpacked by ** but not "dictionary-like" enough that it can be passed as-is to the WTForms constructor? I know that this is an extremely basic question, but any advice to help a novice programmer would be greatly appreciated!

What are the best tools to know if you want to develop on FPGAs? What are the best languages to study? (what HW description languages?) I'd like to compile a list/catalog of good questions, a kind of minimum standard to see if the applicants are experienced.   I am a programmer and I just got my first kitten. A Google search for nerdy/geeky cat names was unimpressive. She's a little black kitten with a very courageous and adventurous attitude! She has a little light gray spot on her chest which might turn white with time. Here she is on my Flickr Which name would you suggest? Which of these do you like? • What does this error mean in my IIS7 Failed Request Tracing report?

  Hi folks, when I attempt to goto any page in my web application (i'm migrating the code from an asp.net web site to web application, and now testing it) .. i keep getting some not authenticated error(s) . So, i've turned on FREB and this is what it says... I'm not sure what that means? Secondly, i've also made sure that my site (or at least the default document which has been setup to be default.aspx) has anonymous on and the rest off. • What are some of the practical cons to using ASMX webservices?

  Hello, at my workplace we are about to start a big project. My boss (a programmer, this is a startup) wishes to use ASMX webservices for this purpose. I do not want to start off a new program using deprecated technology and would like to show him this. I dislike WCF at this moment because it has such an extreme learning curve, but I'd rather learn it than use an unsupported technology. The problem I'm having is that I can not find any practical list of cons and downfalls when compared to WCF so that I can convince my boss to not use them. And saying "it's not as powerful" is not an adequate explanation. What exactly can it not do that we may need it to do for a webservice that is not meant to be shared externally? (as in, we don't support third-parties using our webservices unless they are using one of our clients. )

  Imagine that HTML page is a game surface (see picture). User can have n number of boards (blue divs) on his page. Each board can be moved, re-sized, relabeled, created new and removed. Inside each board there are m number of figures (purple divs). Each of these user can move inside the board or to another board, re-size, change color and label, delete, add new. The goal of the game is not important, but let's say it is to rearrange figures in a certain way so that they disappear. But the goal of the programmer is to save the whole game surface in the database for every user of the site, and to load it later when he returns. So, how do I go about data exchange between client and the database? I'll give my idea in one of the answers.

• (Zywall USG 300) NAT bypassed when accessing in-house-server From LAN Via domain name

  My situations is like this; i host a number of websites from within our joint network solution. On the network is basically 3 categories: the known public, registered via mac, given static dhcp lease the anonymous lan connections, given lease from specific dhcp range switches, unix hosts firewall Now, consider following hosts which are of interest 111.111.111.111 (Zywall USG 300 WAN) 192.168.1.1 (ZyWall USG 300 LAN) load balances and bw monitors plus handles NAT 192.168.1.2 (Linux www) serves mydomain1.tld and mydomain2.tld 192.168.123.123 (Random LAN client) accesses mydomain1.tld from LAN 23.234.12.253 (Random External client) accesses mydomain1.tld via WAN DNS A records are setup so that both mydomain1.tld and mydomain2.tld points to 111.111.111.111 - and the Linux www serves the http parts with VirtualHost configurations, setting up the document roots pr ServerName, this is not so interesting though.. NAT rule translates 111.111.111.111:80 to 192.168.1.2:80 (1:1 NAT) Our problem follows; When accessing http://mydomain1.tld from outside (23.234.12.253 example host) the joint network - everything is fine, zywall receives requests via port 80 and maps it to the linux host' httpd. However - once trying to go through the NAT from LAN side (in-house, 192.168.123.123 example host) then one gets filtered in the Zywall port 80 firewall. I know this only because port 443 is open for administration interface and https://mydomain1.tld prompts for zywall login. So my conclusion is, that the LAN that accesses 111.111.111.111 in fact are routed to 192.168.1.1 whilst bypassing the NAT table. I need to know how to setup NAT / Policy Route, so that LAN WAN LAN will function with proper network translations instead of doing the 'quick nameserver lookup' or whatever this might be.

• SQL Server 2008 Cluster Installation - First network name always fails

  I'm testing failover clustering in Windows Server 2008 to host a SQL Server 2008 installation using this installation guide. My base cluster is installed and working properly, as well as clustering the DTC service. However, when it comes time to install SQL Server, my first attempt at installation always fails with the same message and seems to "taint" the network name. For example, with my previous cluster attempt, I was installing SQL Server as VSQL. After approximately 15 attempts of installation and trying to resolve the errors, e.g. changing domain accounts for SQL, setting SPNs, etc., I typoed the network name as VQSL and the installation worked. Similarly on my current cluster, I tried installing with the SQL service named PROD-C1-DB and got the same errors as last time until I tried changing the name to anything else, e.g. PROD-C1-DB1, SQL, TEST, etc., at which point the install works. It will even install to VSQL now. While testing, my install routine was: Run setup.exe from patched media, selecting appropriate options After the install fails, I'd chose "Remove node from a SQL Server failover cluster" and remove the single, failed, node Attempt to diagnose problem, inspect event logs, etc. Delete the computer account that was created for the SQL Service from Active Directory Delete the MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER folder from the shared data drive The error message I receive from the SQL Server installer is: The following error has occurred: The cluster resource 'SQL Server' could not be brought online. Error: The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007139F) Along with hundreds of the following errors in the Application event log: [sqsrvres] checkODBCConnectError: sqlstate = 28000; native error = 4818; message = [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. System configuration notes: Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition x64 SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition x64 using slipstreamed SP1+CU1 media Dell PowerEdge servers Fibre attached storage

I am a professional programmer and web designer for UCLA (do not set prices) and I have an old colleage that needs a website designed for his new company. He wants his website to resemble the LDH Energy website, layout colors and the flash movies (no image replication or verbiage, all that will be his) and he has one idea of a price and I have another. • Mouse configurable buttons for programming

  Different mouse models has been already discussed. But all these mouse got configurable buttons. Has a programmer, how do you set them? I use The Microsoft Intellimouse Optical. So set the Left side button to "Copy" and the Right side button to "Paste". I did not set the Wheel click to anything. I'm curious to see if there is any better setup? UPDATE : I'm trying to find some interesting key I could map to my mouse buttons. Copy & paste are the best I' found so far, but i just want to know if there is something that could be more useful when programming.

• Why use Oracle Application Express for web app?

  Hi all. I believe we're moving to Oracle Apex for future development. I've read about Oracle Apex on wikipedia and it's pro and con. It seem to me the con outweigh the pro but maybe I'm wrong. I get the sense that Oracle Apex is for DBA with little or no programing knowledge to setup a web app quickly sort like MS Access for none programmer. If you have Oracle Apex working experience, can you share your though? From wikipedia's entry, it doesn't seem like you need to know any programming language at all but just the PL/SQL? edit: Is Oracle Apex scalable? Can it handle traffic like Facebook's size? Thank. • IIS 6 302, 401 Error

  I'm having some problems accessing an ASP.NET website hosted on an internal iis 6 server that I am maintaining. Some users can get to the site, others (including myself can't). The app has Windows Authentication mode set in the web.config file, and Integrated Windows Authentication checked in the Website properties. Anonymous access is not checked. In the IIS logs, I see 2 lines when I make a request for the site's default page (Default.aspx). The first is a 401.2 error, and the 2nd is a 302.0 error. I've tried switching around as many security settings as I can think of, but had no luck yet. Can someone please help?
