• Is DNS propagation still slow?

  I've been told to assume it takes as long as 48 hours for a DNS change to propagate throughout the entire Internet, because some DNS servers cache their entries for longer than my TTL. However, for years and across ISPs and domains, every time I've made a DNS change I see the effects within a couple of hours. Is it still true that I need to assume a full two days for everyone to see my changes?

  I have a Linux machine that is not running too much in the way of software, but is somehow using 1.7GB of the 2GB of the installed memory. When I run free, I get: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2072616 1979972 92644 0 164876 129740 -/+ buffers/cache: 1685356 387260 Swap: 498004 1632 496372 However, when I run ps aux, the memory usage of all processes only comes out to 295.9MB, which is a far cry from the 1.7GB of memory that free reports as used. Why is there such a discrepancy?

• Fail-over caching reverse proxy

  Is there a way to configure varnish or any other caching reverse proxy, to serve pages from its cache when the back-end fails? At the moment, if the back-end goes down a 503 Service Unavailable error would be returned to the browser. I would prefer it if visitors got to see a cached version than an error page while the back-end is being fixed.   On a Windows 7, the working set memory usage plus private memory does not add up to the total used memory in Task Manager and Windows 7 Resource Monitor. How do you find out where the used memory is coming from? The cached memory can't be part of it because sometimes the total cache is greater than the total in use. The commit memory plus the working set also doesn't add up to the total in use - but even that shouldn't be significant if it did, since commit is virtual.

• How can a cached query take 2500 ms on a Sql Server 2008?

  How is it possible that a cached query could take that long. With cache cleared it takes 25000 ms (I know that's just way too long but that's not the issue here). Once it is cached, it takes 2500 ms. What could be the problem here? If it's cached, I assume Sql Server gets it out of the RAM. So, again, 2500ms???

• Get WebDav uploading progress and status (Linux, davfs2)

  I am using WebDAV on Linux box with davfs2 1.4.6. When I copy a file to a mounted WebDAV service, it is goes rather fast, just like a regular local drive operation. And it actually is, because the file is first copied to ~/.davf2/cache directory. But how do I know that uploading is finished and where do I see current progress? Is there a way to know that uploading failed due to lack of space or file size restrictions?

I would like to automate that process via AppleScript, Automator or any other method (paid software is fine). The sticking point with AppleScript is selecting the calendar on the left hand column. • TrueCrypt System Favorite Volume doesn't mount automatically on boot

  I've encrypted my system partition using TrueCrypt and I've read that I can mount my encrypted data partition (TrueCrypt volume) on boot by making it a "System Favorite" and giving it the same password as the system partition. However it doesn't work and I have to mount it manually every time. See this example. I've tried enabling "Cache pre-boot authentication password in driver memory (for mounting of non-system volumes)" in System - Settings, but that didn't change anything either. Any ideas?

If you search for a bit, you can find several forums with people having problems, but of course forums don't get updated when resolutions to those problems are found. I'm just wondering, does anyone know what the final verdict regarding the freezing issue with these hard drives is?

  I run dnsmasq locally as a cache server, in the old days, I allow all INPUT packets from lo+, and set policy of INPUT to DROP: -A INPUT -i lo+ -j ACCEPT Now I decide to put this on the raw table to speed up rules matching, -A PREROUTING -i lo+ -j ACCEPT But that doesn't work as expected. Why? Since the packets get processed by the raw table first, then nat, then filter, why isn't that rule work the same as the old one?

• IE9 Error: There was a pr?blem sending the command to the program

  I'm working on a new/fresh Windows 7 32bit machine that now has IE9 installed. The user is using the Dell Stardock application as his primary "desktop" (all his links there). When we place an internet link there and click on it we get the following error message: There was a problem sending the command to the program. To me this indicates that IE9 is having trouble going to the website we want to go to, which should get passed as a parameter to the browser when it opens. I don't think this is a StarDock/ObjectDock problem because we also have some other problems with internet links. For example, we cannot move an internet link from the Desktop to the Quick Launch on the task bar. When we do try, it forces us to put the link with the IE icon as part of the IE menu instead of allowing us to have a shortcut there as it's own entry. I should mention however, that links on the desktop and in the taskbar do work as we expect them too (without showing the above error message). It appears that this problem started after installing Windows Updates. Since we installed a whole bunch of updates at once I have no idea which one caused the problem. I did have Google Chrome installed but I uninstalled it since the user wants to use IE. The problem started before I uninstalled Chrome. I also reset the browser settings on IE9. It didn't help. Next I uninstalled IE9 which took me back to IE8. This actually did resolve the problem but the problem came back as soon as I installed IE9 again. We have Verizon Internet Security installed. It's actually a McAfee product rebranded to look like Verizon. I'm not real crazy over this software but the customer has a subscription so we're not planning to change it. I have no reason to believe that this is causing the problem and yet I know that security software is often to blame for strange issues. I've looked at the registry settings for the following keys and everything appears to be ok for every single one of them: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\ddeexec\Application HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\https\shell\open\command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\https\shell\open\ddeexec\Application HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft.Website\Shell\Open\Command Edit1: I've found two potential solutions but I won't be able to try them until tomorrow. One is to disable the "Windows Font Cache" service. Another is to clear IE cache and browsing history. I won't be able to try out either solution until tomorrow since this is a remote client's machine. I see there are lots of other suggestions online but if you take the time to read them through you'll see that the other suggestions didn't fix the problem.

• Caching issue with Centos forwarding DNS server

  I installed a Forwarding DNS server on Centos 5.10 and it is resolving addresses e.g google.com. When I stopped named (service named stop) and tried to dig (dig @localhost A google.com) there was a failure to resolve the address. I checked and see the caching daemon nscd is running. Does this mean the server is not caching at all? Unfortunately this is not good enough for updatedb and it purges its cache of /my/sdaX files. How do I prevent/solve this problem?
